Lanka not to allow even UN to probe war crimes
http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/stor ... txw==&SEO=
Mr Rajapaksa has been accused of war crimes in the West, so has embraced less fastidious regimes, such as China, when aid from the European Union and America dried up. Now that both the civil war and the election appear to have been won, his best course of action would be to serve all his island's people with magnanimity. Yet so far, he has shown little willingness to reach out to the Tamils – hence their leaders' support for his opponent.

Herr General,"beaten" again!

Poor General der Fons.Bad enough losing in style to Pres.Rajapakse in an election which he claims was "rigged",the poor defeated candidate, now a "house guest" of his former boss, was reportedly given short shrift despite his four stars et al,when he was arrested yesterday. How the Eelamists must be crowing to see their two former tormentors at each others' throats. The first gleeful moment they've probably had since the demise of their Fuhrer, Prabhakaran.

Sri Lanka's defeated presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka beaten during arrest
General Sarath Fonseka, the former Sri Lankan military chief and defeated presidential candidate, has been punched and dragged along the ground by army troops who arrested him as he met political allies last night.

General Sarath Fonseka, arrested on Monday, stood for election to the Sri Lankan presidency in January Photo: AFP
His wife was later forced to give a statement to police investigators, who raided her home at midnight, and was questioned until 2am this morning.

The general is believed to have been arrested in relation to an alleged coup plot against Presidential Mahinda Rajapaksa, but a military statement issued last night said he had been taken into "military custody" in connection with "certain fraudulent acts and other military offences committed by him."

A military spokesman said "military investigations" were continuing and that a detailed statement will be issued later. He is expected to face a court martial trial.

Opposition leaders have denounced General Fonseka's arrest as a "brutal, armed kidnapping" in which he and other opposition leaders were physically assaulted by an army major-general.

"There was no decorum. To call it an arrest gives dignity and legality to what was a brutal abduction. He was beaten, dragged along the floor and bundled into a van," said his presidential campaign spokesman, Mangala Samaraweera.

He had been meeting Sri Lankan Muslim Congress leader Rauf Hakim and Mano Ganesan, the leader of the Democratic People's Front, at their Colombo campaign headquarters, when Major-General Sumith Manawadu stormed in with a group of military policemen and ordered them to arrest the general and his aide Senaka da Silva.

He had been planning their forthcoming general election campaign for the parliament, which is expected to be dissolved later today, when troops surrounded his headquarters at around 9 pm last night.

"They stormed into the conference room while the meeting was going on and assaulted Mano Ganesan, he [Major-General Manawadu] punched him and then a dozen army people walked in. General Fonseka said 'this must be done by the police', at which point Manawadu punched Fonseka. The other armed fellows pinned him to the ground and dragged him by the legs. They carried him down the stairs and bundled him into a van along with his secretary. He was also assaulted," said Mr Samaraweera.

"He is retired, the military police can't arrest him, it must be under civil law. Until 2am General Fonseka's wife had no idea of his whereabouts, and we still don't know anything. You can't be assaulted and bundled into a car without a warrant," he added.

Britain and the United States have expressed concerns over the general's treatment since his hotel was surrounded by army troops after his election defeat last month. He has blamed wide scale ballot fraud for his defeat.

General Fonseka and President Rajapaksa had fallen out over who deserved the credit for defeating the Tamil Tigers in the country's 26 year civil war.

Since his defeat, more than 20 of his campaign staff have been arrested, including several former military officers, and computer equipment has been seized by civilian police.

The above accounts on the Generals treatment and arrest seem to be true. Something that should never happened. I am more inclined to believe SL is in for more troubled times. Rajapakse might dissolve parliament permanently? Certainly he does'nt want any opposition to him in the future. Quite a disgrace on SL.

This is indeed disturbing, this seems more like a throw back to the troubled times of SL with all manner of conflicts with JVP and like, if not a straight forward banana republic.

Adityaji, he is very much Sinhala nationalist. Tamils looking for the General who wiped out LTTE to champion their cause? I must have missed something there.

A SL friend told me this scenario last year. He said Rajapakse will dissolve parliament and wants to be leader for the next 20 years and grow SL back to what he considers it's lost legacy. Cannot verify if he was correct or will be, but the events sort of back him up so far. Lets see.
Your friend is a BS artist. MR is the last person to do such a thing. No one in SL will allow a dictatorship, whether it is a military or political. If that is the case, MR would have done it already. There was no reason for PE. But I am sure he would do his best to stay in power by legal means (here and there bit illegal means as well.) as any political leader would do.

Can you explain the statement about banana republic? What do you mean by that? What sort of criteria do you use to suggest SL is a banana republic. I never thought SL was a banana republic.

Agree, the timing is not right.

Permanently? Where do you get such ideas? Zero chance of that happening.
Certainly he does'nt want any opposition to him in the future.
RW had been contesting against him for a long time. Nothing has happened to him. Is it because MR is afraid of SF. Clearly not. It was clear that he lost badly in PE. The main reason for this is SF is a loose cannon. SL cannot afford this guy going to war crimes tribunal e.t.c., e.t.c. MR want to win, but he is a fair player.

Herr General's viewpoint shortly before his arrest, claiming that the pres. ,"the Gorilla",was trying to assassinate hima and he took refuge in the Cinnamon Lakeside. What appears to be true is that he was "beaten" a second time in a typical goon show incident."No quarter asked" and it appears that "no quarter will be given"!

Fonseka challenges Mahinda to arrest him if he can
Produces copy of alleged plan to assassinate himby Zacki Jabbar

Former Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka yesterday challenged President Mahinda Rajapaksa to arrest him if there were any valid charges without using Emergency Regulations to lock up his security personnel on baseless allegations.

Addressing the relatives of 32 of his body guards who had been arrested by the CID for allegedly assisting him (Fonseka) to stage a coup on January 26 and 27, he said at his Colombo office, that since there was no legal basis for instituting legal action against him, the Rajapaksas were harassing his employees. "I challenge President Mahinda Rajapaksa to take me into custody if he can."

All the affected families will be looked after in the best possible manner.Rs.50,000 each has already been given to the relatives of 18 of those now in TID custody.

The others would also be given similar assistance. "Mahinda was globe trotting while innocent families are being harassed and made to suffer, just because they did their legitimate duty," Fonseka said.

He said that the President was going around kissing babies as a political stunt but did not care about the children of the 30 ex army officers, who were being detained under Emergency Regulations.

"All the ex-army personnel who protected me during the Presidential Poll had retired from service. They have all the right to engage in any other legal profession in this country," Fonseka said. "But Gothabaya and Wimal Weerawansa are saying that former security forces personnel cannot be involved in politics. This proves that what we have in Sri Lanka is a dictatorship. No where in the world do you find such obnoxious laws."

"We booked the entire second floor of a hotel to thwart the Rajapaksa’s attempt to assassinate me and other Opposition leaders. Twenty rooms on the lower floor were occupied by my security personnel. The whole world saw how they got the hotel surrounded by armed men and prevented us from leaving."

The "Gorilla" was now trying to frame me for the murder of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga but every one knew who the murderer was, he said.

Sri Lanka secures 300mn-dollar arms deal with Russia
Tuesday, 09 Feb, 2010 | 11:43 PM PST |

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka has secured a 300-million-dollar loan from Russia to upgrade its military, the foreign ministry in Colombo said on Tuesday.

“We are looking at technology transfers, including new technology for our military, new satellite technology, through this agreement,” Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said.

He said the deal was clinched during a four-day visit to Moscow by President Mahinda Rajapakse.

Rajapakse and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev also discussed technology cooperation in the fields of oil exploration, renewable energy, aviation and tourism, Bogollagama said.

Bogollagama gave no details of the Russian credit, but RIA-Novosti, a Russian news agency, said Sri Lanka would have access to financing for five years to buy Russian weapons with a repayment period of 10 years.

Russia, China and Pakistan have been the main arms suppliers to Sri Lanka during the 37-year ethnic conflict with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels that ended in May after government troops wiped out its leadership.
This reorientation is welcome and hope our babus have a hand behind this.
IMO this should have been the norm during the whole of the previous decade where instead of using russian help in supplying arms to SL we dithered and let the pukes and pandas slip in as arms suppliers.

Do not underestimate Pres.Rajapakse.He is from "down south" and "down south" individuals have enormous grit and tenacity and mirror their northern counterparts for strength of purpose.I know a well known businessman and close friend, whose father many decades ago came penniless to Colombo from "down south".He slept his first night on a bench on Galle Face Green.Hard work saw him establish a profitable and reputed business.Pres.Rajapakse will deliver the "coup-de-grace" to Herr General politically and then only let him loose. The "loose cannon" would've been spiked well and truly by then.

What might make matter difficult for him in the ensuing parliamentary elections are the voices from the Sangha. The Malwatte Chapter's Mahanayake has come out criticising the arrest of Herr General, saying that it was no way to treat a "war hero".The more Herr General is incarcerated by the ruling regime, the more sympathy he and the opposition will get."Anney Pao",will be the refrain from the street. It translates as "damn sin no?".Turning the general into a martyr will be a major mistake as though he lost,he is still a war hero. The GOSL should set him free and prosecute him for his aleged improprieties in a transparent court hearing.

For the first time in decades, open demos against a GOSL has been seen in the aftermath of Herr General's arrest. The demos have also been seen down south in Galle, etc.,indicating that though Pres.Rajapakse won convincingly, there is strong opposition remaining despite the defeat of the common candidate.

thusitha, what do you think is the reason MR took such a step ?
It is pure stupidity as far as I can think. He is going to loose votes. This is not an act of vengence. The government has to stop SF from creating havoc by framing the government for war crimes. I mean it is not difficult to frame anyone in SL because there are plenty of extra judicial killings. SF knows too much and he must be gagged. SF is zero threat to MR politically. MR would have won GE convincingly how ever hard SF contested.

SF purposely wanted to get arrested. So he did his best to get arrested. That is the only way to get sympathy, more votes at the GE. The whole strategy of getting arrested must be planned at strategy meetings of our white masters. I think some one in the government took the bait and made a huge error in judgement. We will end up being like Iran due to this stupid move by the government. That is my thoughts and I might be wrong.

The accusations against Herr General are coming in thick and fast.Corruption in army contracts, treason, foreign funding ,murdering journalists,etc.,etc.,are all being hurled at him and under current Lankan law he is a fit morsel for the firing squad. We might very well see Herr General der Fons suffer the same fate of Zulfie the B or Saddam Hussein!

As one report said,Pres.Rajapakse is following the strategy of his much maligned predecessor JR Jayawardene to the letter.JRJ won a second term as presdietn after having seen off Mrs.Bandaranaike politically by scandalously using his parliament majority in removing her civic rights. She could neither contest nor campaign for another candidate for seven years. After winning his econd term, the country was looking forward to the general elction where they would bote out the rogues in the UNP govt.,but JRJ had another trick up his sleeve. He orchestrated a scare about a "Naxalite plot" and banned the JVP once again, locked up opposition leaders like Vijaya Kumaratunga (Chandrika's charismatic husband, the Big B of the Lankan screen) and engineered a vcitory for his "Referendum" to extend the life of the then parliament for another term.THis denial of democracy to all Lankans creatd such frustration amongst both Tamils and Sinhalese that it all erupted in 1983 leading to the civil war that plagued the nation for 25+ years.

If Pres. Rajakpakse follows suit in the coming election and it is perceived as being neither free nor fair,a resurgence of southern protest via the JVP is inevitable. One must remember that there is a strong element within and without the armed forces who support or have sympathy with Herr General and the paranoia of the ruling regime will be high for a very long time to come.THey will find conspiracies and plots under every bed, chair, table in the island and an Orwellian era for the island cannot be ruled out. What the ruling regime requires right now is a good friend to counsel it wisely,as it really has very little to fear electorally. The next election is Rajapakse's to lose if he plays his cards stupidly.India can play that role of adviser to the GOSL and calm it down.It needs friends as the west is hot on its heels to punish it for being independent and showing the upturned finger to both Uncle Sam and the EU.

India uneasy over Sri Lanka's slide
By Sudha Ramachandran
BANGALORE - Developments in neighboring Sri Lanka are triggering unease in India. There is growing concern that President Mahinda Rajapaksa will use his second term to marginalize political rivals rather than seek a political solution to the island's ethnic conflicts.
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/LB17Df01.html
The Sinhalese nationalist general was an unlikely champion for minorities but had convinced them that he was more interested in finding them a political solution.
Sri Lanka's rulers are "not at all sensitive to minority aspirations".

Last week he was reported as saying that Tamil people did not seek a political solution to their grievances; rather, they simply needed to be resettled in their homes after the war.

bingo. I feel jealous and envious of SL and Rajakpakse. Fonseka should have behaved more dignified and should not have gotten into confrontational politics. People may have liked him had he not gone into politics. During the second term he may have weilded more power by being not in politics.

"...but he was ambitious!" Sympathy for Herr General has not flowed thick and fast,as his ambitions have got the better of him, when faced he as an opponent the very man who gave him his orders.Had Herr General supported the Opposition candidate ( say Ranil) instead of being in the firing line, even after an election defeat ,his reputation would've been intact.Pres.Rajapakse would've been unable to act against him as it would've seemed an act of ingratitude.

The condemnable murder of the Sunday Leader editor Lasantha, last year, was the lowest point in freedom of speech and human rights in the island, since Richard de Zoysa was murdered by Pres.Premadasa's goons.eliminating "troublesome journalists" is fast becoming Sri Lanka's national sport, hreatening even cricket. With the defeat of der Fons,a sudden alacrity has electrified the GOSL which has sprung into action like a startled "kotiya" (tiger) and miraculously 7 soldiers of a special military intel team have been arrested. However, the arrests throw up even more questions than answers. In the days when Herr General and Pres.Pakse-Rajah were bosom buddies, months of investiagtion by the top cops of the island seemed to have drawn a blank.Even incidents of scribes being beaten up,their offices ransacked found the police clueless as to who the perpetrators were. With the arrests of the 7,either the GOSL's investigative agencies have amazingly turned a new leaf,or a bunch of scapegoats have been found with (guesses are mine) possible connections to Herr General,as they may have been part of his crack force of military intel offciers and supporters of his electoral campaign. While Herr general attempts to fast unto death,a common ruse by Indian politicos,it appears to have failed for now and his incarceration in the courts, military or civil is a foregone conclusion, the verdict I mean!

Seven Soldiers detained for the murder of Lasantha

Seven soldiers belonging to the Sri Lanka Army’s Military Intelligence Unit will continue to be detained as investigations continue into the murder of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge. The seven suspects are being held for further questioning by the Terrorist Investigations Department and the Criminal Investigations Department

Sources however revealed to The Sunday Leader that the investigation is also focusing on the Head Quarters Battalion Account which is directly under the purview of the sitting Army Commander whose prerogative it is to dispose of the monies in this account. Sleuths are investigating why and how General Karunasekera transferred a significant sum of monies to the army’s Head Quarters Battalion Account during the period when Wickrematunge was assassinated and Sarath Fonseka was Commander.

"Nights of the Generals".

Not the famous Hollywodd WW2 film,no Peter O'Toole or Omar Sharif, but starring two irrepressible individuals who have changed the history of the island, both victors against the LTTE.One whose fortunes have dramatically plummeted and enjoying the hospitality of the state, and another who likewise earlier similarly plummeted from grace and also enjoyed the hospitality of the prisons of the GOSL!

Exit Herr General der Fons and enter another General, clansman of Mrs.Bandaranaike's family, former guest of the prisons of the GOSL,a multi-faceted man accused of many crimes which were never proven, victor of Jaffna, uncle of former pres.Chandrika,free-wheeler the "three-wheeler" (a nasty reference to his walking stick when he injured his leg),none other than "Ratty","General" Anurudha Ratwatte.

This general however never went to Sandhurst, but was a member of Lanka's equivalent to our TA.Known during his salad days as "Col.",dear old Ratty who used to travel to Colombo from Kandy by bus saw the wheel of fate elevate him to the sublime position of energy minister, but also assisting in defence matters, in the Govt. of CBK,which allowed him to exchange his bus wheels for a spanking Merc, then reduced for a time to the status of a "three-wheeler" (what an auto or "tri-shaw" is called in the island) when he injured his leg. Gen. Ratwatte's claim to fame is that it was during his stewardship as minister, guiding the troops, the govt. of Chandrika evicted the LTTE from their "capital" Jaffna. That was the first major reversal that the LTTE suffered,an ignominious defeat, huge loss of face,as they then had to retreat into the jungle never to ever return to Jaffna, the heart of the island's northern Jaffna Tamils. In great solemnity in a public celebration,Gen. Ratty then presented to his ruler,Chandrika a scroll recording the capture of Jaffna,in the manner of the ancient kings.

With neice Chandrika in virtual retirement, nephew Anura having departed to the happy hunting ground, Gen.Ratty has now emerged out of the tea bushes of the hill country ready to "do battle" once more for the clan, this time though at the hustings, though not quite either as he is going to be on the "National List",the equivalent of being mereley nominated to Parliament and assured of his seat.

Once one of the most feared men in politics, Anuruddha Ratwatte is now on the UPFA’s National List

Anuruddha Ratwatte
By R. Wijewardene In Kandy

Anuruddha Ratwatte is amongst the most controversial names in Sri Lankan politics.
Accused of murder, corruption and nothing less than turning Kandy into a war zone during previous elections, the former General and Minister for Energy disappeared from the political scene, following allegations that he was involved in the Udathalawinna massacre. The accusation was that his sons and security personnel, on his orders, gunned down 10 SLMC supporters who were accompanying ballot boxes to a counting centre.
Ratwatte was eventually cleared of involvement in the Udathalawinna case but that was hardly the only colourful episode in his controversial career. His son Lohan, now standing as candidate for the Kandy District, was accused of involvement in the killing of Joel Pera, a Fijian Rugby player outside a casino in 1998, while in 2002 certificates of deposits worth Rs. 45 million were found by the CID, in vaults belonging to Ratwatte.
But while some might argue that there is no smoke without fire, none of the various allegations against the ex-General have been proved, and now the veteran is on the verge of making a triumphant return to parliament.
To the horror of many of his former accusers and opponents, Kandy’s one time king pin has been placed on the UPFA National List.
While some might claim that it is a travesty to use an instrument (the National List) intended to allow intellectuals and professionals to enter parliament, to ensure an ageing thug gains a seat at his home in Katugastota, Ratwatte is defiant and quietly confident that his years of experience will allow him to make a contribution to the government’s development programmes.

Herr General, refusing to acknowledge the legitimacy of the special court-martial institued to try him for a series of misdemeanours, has received some ammuniion for his defence from the previous CJ of the Supreme Court who has said openly that he could not be tried in a military court. Her is a run-down of the spat between the two "war-heroes".
