Well dogs are know to sniff around the private parts but haven't heard pets biting strangers without being provoked or trying to run when barked or growled at. My friends Labrador used to do it with every visitor and all this when I was a kid and didn't know about mijjile maalish paalish. It was just a tingling feeling .

I like both Golden Retrievers and Labs esp. the former. GHQ (like all females) has this thing about big cuddly critters and wanted a Golden Retriever (her ex-landlady has one) but I vetoed it on the grounds that an apartment is too small for such a large dog and I have no desire to take care of the dog's upload and download needs while GHQ contents herself to cuddling the dear fella. I am tolerant of well behaved even tempered dogs but 400% paki on ill-tempered ferocious dogs as one of my aunt's older Dobermans once learnt the hard way.

The biggest dog my aunt ever had (and the most foolish and gentle) was a huge Doberman named Bholaynath Mukherjee - he would bark at house residents, wag his non-existent tail at strangers, drink from the toilet bowl, watch horror movies with me (scurrying under the bed on hearing ghostly shrieks), jerk off at a certain door and generally being a totally happy-go-lucky clown.

My grandfather used to keep nasty dogs onlee like Dobermans, native Tibetan Mastiffs and indig. breeds like Sarail Hounds. At that time he also used to keep pet lions and tigers - some of their descendants probably still live on in Alipore Zoo in Calcutta. Only later in life did he switch to more civilized breeds like Alsatians and Labs.

Dogs? We used to have dogs in the midlands. They lived outside the house, guarded it, and ate feces. So, I couldn't never take them lick, or even sniff me. I am ok to 'pet' a clean dog at hands distance (and then wash the hand) but any more intimacy is unthinkable. Same goes with cats, though they are allowed to get inside the house. It makes me extremely uncomfortable to visit a house where a dog lives like a human.

Dalmatians are perfect pets, they don't have issue in adjusting with new owner/house, even if they bare there teeth they look so menacing that strangers/intruders are ready to flee. If you have monkey problem in the neighbourhood, then this is the only dog monkeys are afraid of perhaps due to cheetah pattern. Super friendly to kids and family.

The part about intelligent beagle might be true, Andy-ji but our beagle was rescued from a pharma company lab by some animal rights group and so was very traumatized when it came home the first time.

He used to shiver on seeing humans ( esp belts worn by us). Maybe, thats the reason he isnt the brightest bulb out there ( esp when compared to our dachshund which is super smart) but the sense of smell etc is certainly undeniable.

My theory always has been : size of dog [inversely proportional to] intelligence/alertness

They are only suited or the colder climes or hill stations of India.

Wonder why people even torture the poor animals( esp "pedigree breeds") by bringing them into climes where even the survival of the breed is a issue..

any form of hunting dog will be alert, smart AND big/small - they were bred and cross bred over hundreds of years to refine these qualities. working dogs will be smarter than house dogs - eg huskies who draw snow sleds and wild dogs smarter and leaner than pet dogs. its just the law of nature - he who has to survive gets tougher and smarter than lapdogs.

big fat dogs like st bernard will obviously need lot more food than a small chankian mongrel type thing. but egos and budgets are kingsize these days. a lot of people not so rich in south india also keep big alsatian type dogs in india for whatever reason, maybe its a cultural or family thing.

I think the type of intelligence is what changes with working dogs rather than the ammount of intelligence. It also depends on what the dogs were bred for, and how they were bred (typical German efficiency resulted in some of the finest breeds).

Poodles are mostly domestic/toy dogs but are amongst the most intelligent dogs in the world.

Border Collies and German Shepherds etc are not necessarily more intelligent that other intelligent dogs, rather they are trained to independently think and act without a human presence (like herding sheep out in the grasslands by themselves, which is what they were raised for), hence they have those strengths, and they also tend to be loyal to their immediate human family but suspicious of strangers.

OTOH Golden Retrievers and Labs are no less intelligent but much more sociable since they are bred to work closely with humans (i.e human shoots duck, dog waits for command, charges off and retrieves duck for human, and in generally spends a lot of time socializing with the human in the hideout). Thats why GR and LR are so sociable and fun to be with vs German Shepherds who might appear aloof to strangers. Add to that the reputation they have for never really growing up, and always behaving like a pup that makes them so frisky and lovable.

Regarding the dogs for kids debate, dont be fooled by size. The nature of the dog is the most important, the size is irrelevant. Picking a small dog will not necessarily make it less threatening. Apart from some dogs which are known to be unpredictable, like Rotties/Dobbs/Pit-Bulls etc, bigger dogs are the most gentle around, way safer than smaller dogs that might be easily irritated, temperamental or threatened/hurt easily by the child.

Large Dogs that are known to be excellent for children include:
Labs
GR
Newfies
Mastiffs
Great Danes
Akitas (in Japan they are often left to babysit the kids when mom has to go to the market etc)

wrt dogs,
The most important thing to consider apart form the breed is the sex of the dog.
The males are the ones who will bark and show their teeth at outsiders, and the females will be the true masters of the house, and the females will be wonderful company and true soulmates to their masters.

The males will mostly be goofy, and will have a tendency to go out and not want to come back home (If the male doggie ever escapes from the leash outside, chances are that the handler will have a headache to get him back in), while the female will contendedly stroll along.

Domestic dogs are usually calm and don't bite outsiders as a rule. This is a secret that the dog owners know, intruders and theieves know, but the common people on the streets don't.

We had three spitz once. A guy, a gal, and their sonny.
The gal was a wonderful mouse hunter, and great company to the members in the house, and would go along to any dark room to assist as best as she could. The males would usually goof off in some corner. But the males had their uses, one sound from the gate and the AESA radars would go off, and they would rush barking off to the gate. Infact our alpha male was the terror of the colony, barking and snapping at everyone - except that he was the one who would take the newspapers beating quietly, and the gal would gnash her teeth the moment the newspaper was brought around.

The gals are more intelligent.

Only problem with the females is that they have to be protected when they are in heat. They tend to want 'company' outside the house. The guys also have to be restrained or castrated if they are adults.

I would question the relevance of a dedicated pets thread - its a niche topic. I thought nukkad was created to control thread proliferation and "contain" such topics within one bucket ?

smpratik wrote:My view is that the American pitch is very strong and the F/A-18SH is likely to win. Finally the politics is going to choose the fighter. So, here is my analysis http://angle-of-attack.blogspot.com/201 ... angle.html
All the latest news reports suggest that IAF evaluation on the 6 MMRCA competitor will be out soon with the deal being signed within a year after that. One competitor out 4 short listed fighters will be selected for the contract. Now we all know that ultimately the decision will be taken with politics in mind. PM Manmohan Singh himself once said in pretext to MMRCA that the winner of the contract will be the one who's country will have maximum to offer. This really does puts out Gripen's chances to win the contract considering the fact that Sweden doesn't have anything to offer to India apart from the fighter itself.
The Congress Party of India wants India to be a permanent member of UNSC which will give it a serious advantage over its political rivals in the country. All members of UNSC support India for this except the USA and China. Communist China with its egoistic ambition will never support India. Russia has been a long standing supporter of India in all matters and India definitely wants to hold on to this and hence there was report which suggested that India will try to please Russia but its unlikely to give a order of 126 fighter jets to Russia's MiG-35. But it will buy a smaller number (50-60) of these jets to maintain IAF's numbers and make Russia happy. Same goes with France which India has some level of dislike for its military supplies to Pakistan. French competitor, the Rafael is closely matched with American F/A-18SH but it is more expensive than it. France it likely to receive $2.5 Billion* contract to upgrade IAF's Mirage-2000's, this offer was selected over Israel's cheaper offer. India also used this offer to end Pakistan's efforts to acquire similar systems from France for its JF-17 fighter aircraft.
The other aircraft along with Sweden's Gripen that has very less political attraction is Europe's Eurofighter Typhoon. Its extremely expensive and its sponsor countries are no longer inclined to buy it which mean that it will remain very expensive. Plus UK its primary backer will not withdraw its support for UNSC seat even if its Typhoon is not selected. That now leave just the F-16IN and F/A-18 SH both of which are of American origin. USA has long not supported India for the permanent seat but the relations are improving everyday. US sees India as a important ally in Af-Pak situation and against the Chinese and so does India. Multiple contracts were given to USA and USA was the one which got India into the NSG. American stance on the UNSC seat is also changing dramatically with positive comments from American diplomats and envoys. Hence India will try hard to please America by giving the contract to American competitors mostly Boeing's F/A-18 SH instead of the F-16 which is already in PAF's inventory. Hence I conclude that F/A-18SH is the strongest contender to win the contract.
As a newbee this is something i fail to understand... we are compensating everyone just because we need to please Uncle sam...? so we end up spending lot more then the amount which will be given to uncle for whole deal... if GOI was so clear that pressure from uncle will be huge and at end of day they need to bow down to them; then why to indulge in this evaluation exercise and further delay the whole process... just get the jets though FMS route...
If only life was so simple ! Say you want to marry a girl , why go through the process of asking her parents, get engaged etc etc .. so you know why not just do it ! .. not that it doesnt happen anyway :)

Engine smoke can also depend on the fuel itself. If the kerosene is dirty it will smoke any engine.
So think about the basics before speculating if the Mig-29 engine smokes more or not.

Other factors are engine maintenance, fuel additives, afterburner on or off,

It is possible that LCA's GE engine has stricter req. on fuel standards and maint. etc than russian A/C like Mig-29.

It is also possible that LCA being in testing stage are being "pampered" while work-horse planes are pushed tk limits.

vvv due to Singha-garu's anticipated Q, one possible answer is the fuel supplier in NE have diff standards (AKA "additives") than one in Pune for example.

(proof that I can read future questions)

This article in an extremely good analysis of Pakistan. I hope that Indian defence establishment and politicians take action on this.

largely i feel that indian establishment is not answerable to it's people. Manmohan simply dreams of peace with pakistan and rest of the cabinet is working under sonia to christianize india.

Re: Anticipating & countering future military threats/challe

Post by K Mehta »

This thread would be incomplete without this
Zoltán Dani-Wikipedia
Based on experiences of the 1981 Syrian War, constant relocation of all assets was key to survival of Dani's unit, the 3rd missile detachment of the 250th Serbian Air Defence Battalion. Although the SA-3 / "S-125M Neva" system is not a mobile SAM complex per design, its solid fueled missiles are transportable in near combat ready condition (in fact the Polish military created a mobile SA-3 version on T-72 tank chassis in the 1990s).

Therefore Lt. Col. Dani trained his SA-3 unit to achieve a 90 minute equipment break-down time with minimal lighting provided for better camouflage, one hour better than the standard time. Further set-up and break-down time reductions were achieved by reducing the SA-3 unit's number of active 5P73 launchers and V-601P missiles to just 2x2 from the original 4x4 configuration.

This reduction in missile capability was justified, because of the expected strictly limited time slots and occasions where a Serbian SAM battery could open fire in face of a tremendous NATO Wild Weasel capability, with any hope of self-preservation. The lean use of SAM missiles also became a necessity later on, as the initial March 24, 1999, 20:20 NATO air strike destroyed 100pcs of ready to use V-601P spare missiles in two concrete vaults at the Jakovo SAM base.

Lt. Col. Dani made it a strict field rule that the SA-3's UNV type fire control radar can be turned on for a maximum of 2 x 20 seconds in combat, after which the battery's equipment must be immediately broken down and trucked to a pre-prepared alternative launch site, whether or not any missile has been fired. This rule proved essential, because other Serbian AAA units emitting high-frequency radiation for any longer periods or forgetting to relocate, were hit by AGM-88 HARM missile counter-strikes from NATO aircraft, suffering radar equipment and personnel losses, even getting completely obliterated in some cases.

In order to train personnel operate efficiently under such pressures, Zoltán Dani obtained access to an "Accord" electronic signal simulator, which allowed the SA-3 radar and guidance crew practice combat scenarios based on imitated engagements. Several soldiers were removed from position both during the pre-war practice drills and wartime guard shifts, when they proved unable to cope with the psychological stress of being targeted by enemy aircraft.

It was decided two missiles will be launched against any target near simultaneously, in order to maximize hit probability. Unusually, launches were to be conducted against NATO aircraft that have already accomplished their ground strike missions and were about to leave Serbian airspace. Their northern heading was pointing away from the direction of powerful NATO airborne jammer sources, thereby allowing the SA-3's un-modernized UNV fire control radar set to operate with less interference.

Dani's mobility rule was strictly observed in his unit, with the trucks collecting more than 100.000 km in the odometer during the 78 days of Kosovo War, as they constantly shuttled missiles, radars and equipment between the dozen alternative launch sites, most of them embankments left over from already phased out SA-2 (S-75) units.

Radar sets obtained from confiscated Iraqi MiG-21 planes were planted around the SAM sites to serve as active emitter decoys, which diverted some anti-radiation missiles from the actual targets. (Dozens of Iraqi MiG-21/23 warplanes, sent to Yugoslavia for industrial overhaul, were seized in 1991, after Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait.) Retired SAM radar sets were used as optical decoys, left at well-known military bases to lure NATO planes waste munition on worthless targets. Owing to these measures, Dani's unit evaded 23 incoming HARM missiles, all of which impacted off-site with insignificant or zero damages.

General surveillance of NATO aircraft was provided by vintage P-18 radar sets, which used vacuum tubes and a large rotating Yagi antenna grid for meter-band illumination. Under optimal conditions the soviet made P-18 was able to plot large-RCS aircraft from 125 to 200 km, depending on the target's size, but with a high range inaccuracy of several hundred meters.

Zoltán Dani tuned his P-18 to the lowest possible frequency and further replaced four major capacitors in the electronics to achieve an even longer wavelength, hoping that meter band waves will reflect from the inside of targets, rendering stealth aircraft skin technology ineffective. In practice his modified P-18 provided stable plot of F-117 movements from just 25 km, which was useful when combined with the comparatively short missile range of the SA-3 air defence complex. Furthermore, the P-18 meter band radar could be kept almost constantly emitting, since most NATO radar warning receiver devices did not cover such a very low frequency band.

Mr Ali,

What you believe to be hinduism's weakness is its most important strength. Hinduism is not rigid and continues to evolve and change. What you believe a conversion we look as evolution. Next generation of hindus though imbibe several cultural and theological traits from earlier generation are not stuck with those and do not continue to defend them to death. It has a far reaching implication and continues to maintain hinduism as a concept that is indestructible that is "Sanatan". Yes we have not been able to protect ourselves against islamic invaders and allowed a lot of sanatan dharmis to be brutalized and get converted by force. But we have learnt our lessons and it will not happen in future. But the evolution of hinduism and hindus will continue. The essential character of hinduism is what makes it the most resilient concept in the world and that has survived since man has existed in this part of the world and will continue to remain as a force till will exist. That is remain "Sanatan".

As for islam is concerned it is just a new addition to the pantheon of faiths that exist in India. It has brought with it several things. One of the thing that it has brought is religious extremism. And normal hindu has still not figured out as to how to respond to it. Its essential liberal theology goes against a swift and decisive response against the religious extremism exhibited by islam. Its accomodative and conciliatory nature has still not taken it towards a path that seeks complete destruction of islam or the religious extremism that it exhibits. Hindutva is a response we dont know whether it will be successful or the traditional accomodation will be able to accomodate everything that islam has to offer. So you will see a counter reaction of hindutva on these issues of religious fundamentalism and if pressed further an attempt to completely eliminate such an idea from the indian subcontinent.

Arjun, your comment is in poor taste. There are many Indian Muslims as well as many Hindus who practise first cousin marriage. In trying to insult Ali, you are indirectly insulting many Indians.
