Five of Sonia Gandhi's pet bills to face Opposition roadblock in Lok Sabha
Congress president Sonia Gandhi's five pet legislations - the Food Security Bill, Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, the Lokpal legislation, Women's Reservation Bill, and the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill which will replace the anti-rape ordinance, have hit an Opposition roadblock.

The BJP and several regional parties on Tuesday opposed hurried passage of these Bills on the plea that they required amendments.

The resistance from the Opposition could stymie the party's attempts to ensure passage of the Bills in the coming Parliament session, closely linked as they are to plans for creating a favourable political climate in time for the assembly polls in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Rajasthan, and later the Lok Sabha polls.
Who's opposing what...

The current set of leaders of VHP and RSS are the modern day Ambi Kumars. This also includes their past poster boys/girls such as Govindacharya and Uma Bharati. I am totally sick of these people.

Sanku ji,

Off late there is no statement from Uma. She made an anti-Modi statement as late as during UP elections. I sympathise with Kalyan Singh as he is the victim.

important factor among all three - all are OBCs with strong base however only NaMo made it count with strong adminstrative skills and development.
NaMo can easily upstage all of them in crucial Hindi heartland hence the khujili. Of course kalyan singh is now tooo late like Keshubhai patel. uma Bharathi still has some strenght with also being relatively young. she can learn from NaMo if she wants to.

Dear Ravinar,

I have calculated a simple logic which if turned correct we may never have a Congress Govt after 2014. It works like this :

1) Congress was in Power from 1947 to 1977 - 30 Years continuously,

2) Congress was in power from 1978 to 1998 - 20 Years continuously,

3) Congress is in Power from 2004 to 2014 - 10 Years Continuously.

Now considering that Congress was thrown out of Power three times in our free India, with a gap of exactly 30 , 20 , & 10 years it may never succeed coming back to power after 2014 by simple math logic.
comments from from media crooks blog which is very popular.
hope this comes true.

each rule by congis is worse than the earlier one.

Since Nehru death INC never win majority seats without a wave nation wide. 1972,1980 and 1984 are all result of wave. To win alone is impossible. Further the highest vote share in 1984 is itself is less than 50%. So actual base of INC without any wave if exposed need to have UPA type ganging only.

Why Vasundhara Raje matters in Rajasthan

Shashank Shekar (a.k.a. offstumped) on Raje's previous term and the grassroots police reform she initiated (among other things). Comparison also with the state of the same police stations today.

Jolt for Shettar govt as two ministers quit Karnataka BJP to join Congress
Forests and ecology minister C.P. Yogeshwara and small scale industries minister Narasimha Naik have expressed their desire to join the Congress, bringing down the number of BJP legislators to 106 in the 211-member assembly.

How YSJ is handled/accommodated will show way for Ktaka.

Yet another bankrupting program aimed purely at the polls only but which will hang on long after the polls are over (like MREGA)...

Cong bends over backwards to build consensus on Sonia's Food Security Bill
After two meetings in the last fortnight exposed serious disagreements between the Centre and the states on the UPA's ambitious Food Security Bill, the Congress party is going all out to ensure that the legislation is passed in this Budget Session.
Nobody's bothered to ask 'where's the money, honey?'. Its public money after all. Borrow and spend is the mantra till the next polls are tided over....onlee.

This is Robinhood politics more regularly done in southern states TN and AP for a long time. DMK even gave color Tv per family. Free house, free food, cheap booze, alost free power(when it is there) free water. All to "poor". By the way the total poor people in AP is more than the state population.

GAUHATI, India (AP) — Adolf Hitler is running for election in India. So is Frankenstein.

The tiny northeast Indian state of Meghalaya has a special fascination for interesting and sometimes controversial names, and the ballot for state elections Saturday is proof.

Among the 345 contestants running for the state assembly are Frankenstein Momin, Billykid Sangma, Field Marshal Mawphniang and Romeo Rani. Some, like Kenedy Marak, Kennedy Cornelius Khyriem and Jhim Carter Sangma, are clearly hoping for the electoral success of their namesake American presidents.

Then there is Hitler.

This 54-year-old father of three has won three elections to the state assembly with little controversy over being named after the Nazi dictator.

His father had worked with the British army, but apparently developed enough of a fascination with Great Britain's archenemy to name his son Adolf Hitler — though he also gave him the middle name Lu, Hitler said.

Why else? And the interest cost on that loan will be a burden for yrs to come while our FM berates gold imports as the primal reason for our ballooning deficits. desi politics shames Kabuki theatre many times over.

P.S..
BTW, in the same economy dhaga was also posted this cute news snippet that our net external loans position has trebled since 2006. Yup, right, there ya have it. Only.

I do not know much about Yashwant Sinha, but watching him being interview by Times Now on the Budget was quite nice. He came off as a knowledgeable and dignified individual. He spoke from the heart and appeared so credible; and then when mind suddenly switches to scams committed by INC, DMK and others......one cannot feel sad and angry. For some reason, I thought even Anand Sharma came off better than Kapil Sibal.

INC Peformance in Tripura has not changed much (Retained same 10 No seats). In Meghalaya it performed little better and can form government with NCP Support. In Nagaland it has taken the beating. Overall not a great performance except for Meghalaya. Has to wait for analysis coming whether its due to prince or state leaders better governance.

He was in IAS and Chela of former PM Chandrashekahr. When Chandrashekahr got his PM dream fullfilled and resigned. He said to his followers to look for greener pastures in whichever party they find it suitable. Yashawant Sinha chose BJP. Mulayam started his own Samahwadi Party.

I wouldn't call that sidelining. I would call it taking over party responsibility from LKA.

In Rajnath Singh's words (per Eenadu news paper) " LKA is the leader in times of crisis. As long as he is behind us we have nothing to fear". That is a compliment.

That said, LKA knows the era of Modi has come.

Interesting moves in AP. Recommended read in full to all AP watchers...
The Jagan factor pushes Congress to action (the new IE)
According to sources, after much dilly-dallying for several months, the Congress leadership is considering action against the rebels.

As per this decision, the Congress Legislature Party leadership will ask Speaker N Manohar to accept the resignations of five of its MLAs—S Vijaya Krishna Ranga Rao (Bobbili), Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas alias Nani (Eluru), Maddala Rajesh Kumar (Chintalapudi), Dwarampudi Chandrasekhara Reddy (Kakinada Urban) and Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy (Punganur)—which are lying on the table of the Speaker.

The Congress leadership will also take action against four of its legislators who met Jagan at Chanchalguda prison and pledged their support to him. They are: Perni Venkata Ramiah alias Nani (Machilipatnam), Buchepalli Siva Prasada Reddy (Darsi), Gottipati Ravi Kumar (Addanki) and Jogi Ramesh (Pedana). The party leadership is planning to suspend these four from the party so as to request the Speaker to disqualify them from their membership of the Assembly.

If the resignations of the five MLAs are accepted, the strength of the House will come down from 293 to 288 and the magic figure needed for the government’s survival will also come down from 147 to 145. Since the number of Congress MLAs, after initiating action against the nine legislators, will be 147, there will be no immediate threat to the government. If the Congress leadership does not act against its rebels now, then it will need the support of 147 MLAs for the survival of the government as the test will be based on the actual strength of the Assembly.

The elusive 2011 census numbers on religion as speculated by - The UQ's Economist , take it with a sackful of salt.
But this report also mentions that they are not going to be revealed by Congrezzis till after elections .

My only question is why is BJP sitting on this issue ?

Growing, and neglected
....
An official analysis of data by religion from the 2011 census is not yet out. Any delay might be deliberate: to avoid a fuss ahead of general elections, due next year. Higher fertility rates among Muslims might be seen as politically sensitive. Private studies (which ?) guess that India has about 177m Muslims, comprising 14.6% of the total population. It marks a rise of nearly 40m, or a percentage point, on a decade before. Higher fertility will ensure the upward trend continues. Overall, India’s fertility rate is falling, but among Muslims it is dropping most slowly. Old habits persist. Few Muslim women work outside the home. Contraception is not much used.

After standing on false prestige and even becoming vindictive against those who suspected the integrity of electronic voting machines, the Election Commission has finally acceded to the demand that the machines must issue a paper receipt to voters.
The commission’s decision – made known to the Supreme Court last month in response to the plea by Dr.Subramanian Swamy, President, Janata Party that EVMs be scrapped – is a major victory for all those who were campaigning against electronic voting machines because they lacked transparency.

Dr.Swamy had argued that EVMs must be scrapped because they are not tamper-proof. They could be retained only if there was transparency via a paper trail, so that every voter knew that his vote had been registered correctly. Even Japan, which started the process of electronic voting had now reverted to paper ballots. Many other countries had also fallen back on paper ballots for the same reason.

The commission, which had stubbornly resisted the demand for either scrapping EVMs or introducing a paper trail, began to display some reasonableness in the matter after Dr.Swamy moved the Supreme Court and a Bench comprising Justices P.Sathasivam and Ranjan Gogoi declared that it would hear the matter on a priority basis, so that the proceedings concluded before the next parliamentary election.

The commission signaled its readiness to consider the plea when it told the court last September that it was contemplating “foolproof methods” to ensure that EVMs were not misused or tampered and that it was consulting technical experts and political parties in this regard.

Finally, some weeks ago, the commission informed the court that it was willing to incorporate the paper trail in order to remove doubts about the integrity of EVMs. The commission told the court that it had done a trial of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in EVMs in 180 polling stations in various states. This system could be incorporated after it received the opinion of an expert committee that is examining the issue. The commission proposes to use the paper trail first in some by-elections and later incorporate the same in general elections. It has already asked EVM manufacturers to fine tune the paper trail system.

The debate on the integrity of the EVMs was started three years ago when a group of public spirited NRIs headed by Mr.Satya Dosapati of New Jersey organized workshops in Delhi and Chennai under the aegis of ‘Save Indian Democracy’ and invited national and international experts to speak about the vulnerability of these machines to hacking and fraud. Among them was Mr.Till Jaeger, a lawyer who got the Federal Constitutional Court in Germany to ban the use of these machines in that country; Mr.Rop Gonggrijp, a computer hacker from Netherlands who demonstrated on live TV how the machine could be hacked and Mr.Alex Halderman, Professor of Computer Science , University of Michigan, USA, who is an authority on electronic voting security. The most prominent Indian expert at these workshops was Mr.Hari Prasad of Hyderabad, who spoke about the ease with which EVMs could be tampered with and on how, irrespective of voters’ preferences, the machine could be pre-programmed to produce a result.
Now FAKE VOTER LISTS which are another problem. Hope BJP can fight it out.

Not so fast, I am sure EC will find a way to postpone paper trail for another 10 or 20 years.
