Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Doping in Indian sports. Many dope to win and land a job. An athletics career is not on their mind.

Chess - we are very strong in men's team (Guki, Pragg, Arjun, Vidit, Hari).
but failed to beat Iran and Uzbekistan (both were 2-2 draws).
Iran is in lead currently.
most likely will have to settle for silver.

5-3 final score. India in finals with winner of China vs. japan.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
At least 10 gold medals that are silver are due to hired African sportsmen and women from Africa by Saudi, Bahrain, Qatar, and other Arabian countries. Asian games is supposed to be non-professional and these Arabian countries are abusing the spirit of the games. Well given their cult it is known.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Don't know it says 2-2 India vs Iran
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
I don't think I'm too concerned about the African-Arabs in the Asian Games or the consequent loss of medals. Don't care too much about Asian Games (or Commonwealth Games). Only focus should be Olympics. So, whether it is the javelin or shotput distance or the times in the track and field, we should look at the Olympic record or World record and see how far we are from it.

Gukesh lost from a drawn position against Iran. If we had won the tie against Iran, we would have been number 1. This is the second time Gukesh losing a game is costing us a gold.A Deshmukh wrote: ↑04 Oct 2023 13:57 Chess - we are very strong in men's team (Guki, Pragg, Arjun, Vidit, Hari).

Gukesh blundered into loosing 2 pawns in an end-game with 3 pawns.
Engines said it was drawable. but Guki resigned. and we lost the gold.
Another gold was lost on the Golf course.
Aditi Ashok was brilliant and leading by a huge margin after 3rd day. On the 4th day I don't know what happened. She ended up 5 above par!
Learning experience. Hope they recover and grow and give more successes in the future.

What happened to our boxers and wrestlers? We used to win at the Olympic and world level. Now we don't seem to have good prospects even at the Asian level.

Lets hope we cross a 100 this time
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
I just discovered a sport that actually has been an olympic event since 1992. Its called Canoe Slalom where people canoe through artificially created rapids and they have to pass through some gates both in the forward and reverse direction. The amount of energy needed to recirculate and keep the water running for lengthy durations must be mind boggling and we wonder about our carbon foot print. Imagine the energy needed to practice this sport every day.
There are at least two Indian athletes as well who are participating at the Asiad. God knows where they get to practice. Can't imagine having such a facility in India. (Added Later: OK, There is a natural facility built on Narmada river in Maheshwar, MP. Plans are there to build a artificial one in Bhopal)

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
India wins Hockey gold, badminton men's single bronze (Prannoy played with a bad back), 3 bronzes in wrestling. The only wrestler who lost his bronze medal match today is Bajrang Punia who was active in wrestler's protest. Our tally becomes 92 (22 gold) with this and we have several assured medals tomorrow which should take us past 100 medals. We should end up with at least 25 golds.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry

Inching closer to the magic figure 100
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
We crossed the 100 medals guaranteed figure.
The gold tally is now 22 + 1 guaranteed (men's compound archery is India vs India final)
There are potentially 5 more golds possible:
* Kabaddi mens and womens
* Cricket men vs Afghanistan
* Satwik/Chirag in badminton men's doubles final
* Jyoti Vennam in compound women's archery
So a best case of 28 golds would be absolutely incredible - I'd rate it far higher than the previous zenith of Indian performance in a multi-sport competition - the 2010 CWG 2nd place. This is because our top medal hauls came from:
* Shooting against the Chinese and Koreans - the world's best
* Archery against SoKo - the world's best
* Best ever athletics performance, including both men's and women's javelin.
We did all this despite a - relatively speaking - calamitous performance from the wrestling squad from whom 1-2 golds were expected. Instead they come back with 5 bronzes.
Meanwhile we medals in sepak takraw, roller speed skating, wushu and canoeing. Amazing performance.
In the past I'd argued we're not really getting to world standard until we can get 25+ golds in AG in major sports, but I definitely did not expect to get there in this edition - I hoped we'd crack 20, but the potential to get to almost 30 is amazing. But for the Middle-East countries turning the athletics competition into the Afro-Asian Games, we'd probably have crossed 30 golds too.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
There are four different types of wrestling - Freestyle, Greeco Roman, Judo, Jujitsu. Except Freestyle, the rest are boring. In greeco-roman, you cannot touch the opponent below the waist which means the opponents just lock their shoulders and nothing happens for long periods of time. Judo and Jujitsu is where you spend most of your time adjusting your robe which is called 'gi', apparently.
Wushu is buffoonery as far as I can tell. There are no opponents but you display your skills like wielding a fake sword that is not stiff, shakes a lot and makes a lot of noise because it looks like it is made of aluminium foil.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
OK, there are combat events too in wushu that look more like MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) than the traditional chinese kungfu we are accustomed to see. They just repackaged MMA.
