Oh, and btw,
North Korea Claims to Conduct 2nd Nuclear Test (NYT)
Stupid Atlanticists and Bushies. They were so busy hyper-ventilating over the Balkans and the Middle East, that they've allowed the Far East to go to hell in a handbasket.
Now both of China's twin fists - Pak and NKorea - are looking like unstable nuclear nightmares.

NPAs - There is a sanskrit saying " prusta thadanath dantha banghaha ". The literal gently translation is when you hit on the back teeth fell down.

Real translation is for a given reaction a totally unrelated reaction will come out. In case of NPAs, as soon as the word Nuke-Test comes then the first thing to prescribe CTBT and NPT to India.

Heh, at least Ayatollahs live out of missile range, for the most part.
I wonder what babus are saying about this, since Pak has gotten missile help from NKorea in exchange for giving N-help to them. Both countries are China's twin fists, and one hand washes the other.

More than US, Japans langoti is up for the pickings..

. Lets see where their lecturing takes them. Ofcourse Japan and Soko have always has a hands off approach to Pakistan from Proliferation to Terrorism and let Amrika do its bidding, by showering them with aid .
For now Lil Kim Amar Rahe ! Let em "Donor" Nations and Dlagon and Amrika have it..

I was thinking about this. I was thinking that Japan will react this way in particular, because they've recently been stepping up their efforts in this direction, as a response to NKorean nuclearization.
Maybe this is part of China's plan. If it isn't, it's surely a major embarrassment to them, since they are supposed to be NKorea's guarantor.

This may bring Japan's wrath down on our heads, because Japan wants everyone to sign CTBT as a way to contain NKorea. I don't see how CTBT will do this, since NKorea will simply refuse to sign, as they have for NPT. If NKorea can use blackmail to stay alive despite sanctions, etc, I don't see how CTBT will make any difference to them.

We should conduct 43 more tests, so that we can be at par with China.
China's largest atmosheric test was 3000 kt and largest ground test was 4300kt
We should beat this within next 3 years.

It is unfair to compare Pakistan and North Korea. NoKo is a failed state. Pakistan is a nascent democracy fighting the good fight.
Pakistan desperately needs funds for various things among which nuclear stockpile stewardship is important. North Korea has no enemies. It is not as if anyone wants to attack and take over North Korea. But for Pakistan, arch rival India is always waiting for an opportunity to attack Pakistan. In a grim reminder of India's true intent - the Southern State of Karnataka has returned the right wing fundamentalist BJP to power in a popular mandate in support of violence against minorities.

Very very happy to read about this. It is a major slap in the face for Obama's let-us-be-nice-to-murderers-and-terrorists-and-fanatics (corollary being scr.w India and embrace TSP/Taliban) foreign policy that buries its head in sand and hopes threats will go away. It is all nicely packaged and camoflauged as neo-liberalism.
If the jehadis deliver one more punch on the other cheek, either on the mainland or some anglo-saxon interest, it will lead to complete collapse of his credibility and hopefully dawn of some sense.

NoKo & Paki nation have a long history of grass eating population, so sanctions or not, little difference in the lives of the populace. At least the djinn tech might help NoKo catch unkils/japanese attention.

I think it is a combination of two factors. It is both TSP & TSPRC. The Pakistanis may be testing several things here. Besides, the Pakistanis also want to cause overall confusion in the NPT & CTBT regimes. This will help them, in their thinking, in having a better deal for themselves. Like circa 1967, a new recognition may come for circa 1998. In addition, China would do anything to cause immense discomfiture to the US. Cocking a snook at them.

The NoKo supremo,Dear Leader Kim,who had a stroke recently is exercising his sovereign right to make a "loud fart",in the immortal words of Chariman Mao,who said that it was better than a long speech. For some time, the N.Koreans have felt slighted by the west,as their earlier initiatives to tone down their nuclear capability and usher in warmer ties with the S.Koreans did not win for them enough largesse from the US in particular. It is also a signal to the new "O-Team" that Dear leader is not a vegetable as the western propaganda had made him out to be but very much in control of events in the Korean Peninsula.Coming on the heels of the former much loved S.Korean Pres. Noh's sucide,it is a bad time for the S.Koreans.I do not think that Pak figures anywhere in this event,as this appears to be a purely Korean spat.
Pres. Obama is about to engage the Russians in a round of strategic arms reduction, hopefully on a large scale, where the two nuclear giants will reduce the arsenals by half. That still leaves them with approx. 5000 N tipped missiles.Enough to eradicate life on earth several times over.It is imperative that the US and Russia demonstrate their intentions to improve nuclear arms reduction,in order to convince sceptical nations that there is no need for other existing N-powers to increase their arsenals.Pakistan is reportedly going into overdrive to acquire more N-weapons and delivery systems,as their military perhaps sees the writing on the wall, dealing with the Taliban and want to speed up manufacture of their strategic arsenal before the situation becomes critical. The communal tensions developing in Karachi because of the refugees from Swat is yet again exposing the fault lines in Pak's ethnic groups.

North Korea tests nuclear bomb in underground bunker
North Korea triggered a red alert across Asia this morning, after it carried out a nuclear weapon test and fired a short-range missile.
By Malcolm Moore in Shanghai
Last Updated: 7:43AM BST 25 May 2009
Tremors from a 4.7 magnitude artificial earthquake were detected just before ten o'clock local time, after North Korea detonated a bomb in a bunker six miles underground.
The rogue state, which had previously tested a nuclear weapon in October 2006, boasted that its latest test was more powerful "in terms of its explosive power" and more technologically-advanced.
North Korea 'already using plutonium to make weapons'
We successfully conducted another underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of measures aimed at strengthening our self-defence nuclear deterrent in every way," said the state-run North Korean news wire.
The test will "contribute to safeguarding our sovereignty and socialism and guaranteeing peace and safety on the Korean peninsula and the surrounding region," it added.
The test site was around 230 miles north east of Pyongyang, according to the United States Geological Survey. The location is just a few miles from where North Korea tested its first nuclear device in 2006.
Yonhap, the South Korean news wire, also reported that a single ground-to-air missile, with a range of 80 miles, was fired from a launch site nearby just a few hours later. The rogue state is not thought to have yet developed a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, experts said.
Taro Aso, the Japanese prime minister, said he would set up a task force to handle the situation and seek an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss a plan of action.
Barack Obama, the US president, said the nuclear and missile tests were "a threat to international peace" and warranted "action by the international community."
The Chinese Foreign ministry said it was investigating the situation and could not comment immediately. Diplomatic sources said they had been expecting a North Korean nuclear test, and said the rogue state was trying to increase pressure on the United States in a high-stakes negotiation.
"The reported test appears to be aimed at securing ultimate endorsement of its nuclear power status from the United States and bringing Washington to the negotiation table," said Kim Sung-han, a professor at Korea University.
Lee Myung-bak, the South Korean president, called an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the situation. "Both South Korea and US intelligence agencies are analysing and closely monitoring the situation," said a spokesman for his office.
He added that the South Korean government had been warned beforehand that a nuclear test was possible. At the end of last week, an unnamed South Korean defence official was quoted saying that "brisk activity" had been detected along North Korea's northern coast and that "trucks mounted with mobile rocket launchers are on the move".
North Korea has repeatedly warned in the past month that it intends to restart its nuclear programme and build up its arsenal of nuclear weapons. Pyongyang was furious in April after the United Nations Security Council issued a rebuke against it for testing a long-range missile. The United States believed the missile was a weapon capable of striking continental America.
Reports of the nuclear test hit South Korean financial markets and the main KOSPI share index was down four per cent, while the won dropped more than one per cent against the US dollar.
In 2006, North Korea detonated a very small nuclear device which the Atomic Energy Commission estimated at "about or less than a kiloton". Doubts were raised about whether it was actually a nuclear weapon, since conventional arms could have generated a similar blast.
The test drew international condemnation, including from China, Pyongyang's traditional ally, since Beijing was notified just 20 minutes before the test. "This test has brought about a negative influence on our bilateral relationship," said the Chinese Foreign ministry at the time. The UN approved military and economic sanctions against the state shortly afterwards.

Iran detonating bum invites assured action from Israel, Unkil yes or no will not matter anyway once Iran does that.
Unkil is not as much threatened by Iran as Israel is. With messiha sitting in DC and spreading "hope" among present lot of confused americans, Israel has to go on their own.
Also, Iran's nuke test will not benefit Indian geo-political interests. India wants a working military relation with Israel, at the same time Iran is important for long term Indian involvement in A'stan for "peace and stability" and to neutralize all paki attempt to reverse the hard work done by India to go back to happy taliban days.
Moreover, Iranian nuke test will distract the worldwide focus, which is currently on paki Talibanization and their nuke takeover. This will give pakis a big sigh of relief!!

North Korea conducts nuclear testThe North gave no details of the test location, but South Korean officials said that a seismic tremor was detected in the north-eastern part around the town of Kilju - the site of North Korea's first nuclear test. The US Geological Survey said a 4.7-magnitude quake was detected at 0054 GMT, 10km (six miles) underground. Geological agencies in both South Korea and the US said the tremor indicated a nuclear explosion.
Outrage over N Korea nuclear testGeological recordings of the tremor suggest it was much larger than the 2006 test. That was backed up by the Russian defence ministry, which detected a blast of up to 20 kilotons - comparable to the American bombs that flattened Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

NKorea declares it conducted nuclear testPyongyang announced the test, and Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed an atomic explosion at 9:54 a.m. (0054 GMT) in northeastern North Korea, estimating the blast's yield at 10 to 20 kilotons — comparable to the bombs that flattened Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Ten to 20 kilotons would be far more than North Korea managed in 2006. U.S. intelligence officials said the 2006 test measured less than a kiloton; 1 kiloton is equal to the force produced by 1,000 tons of TNT. However, Russia estimated the force of the 2006 blast at 5 to 15 kilotons, far higher than other estimates at the time.
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso said the U.N. Security Council will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday in New York (2030 GMT). "North Korea's nuclear test poses a grave challenge to nuclear nonproliferation and clearly violates U.N. Security Council resolutions," he said in Tokyo. "We are not tolerating this at all."

North Korea nuclear weapon test announcement: text in full"The Democratic People's Republic of Korea successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defence in every way as requested by its scientists and technicians.
"The current nuclear test was safely conducted on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control and the results of the test helped satisfactorily settle the scientific and technological problems arising in further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology.
"The successful nuclear test is greatly inspiring the army and people of the DPRK all out in the 150-day campaign, intensifying the drive for effecting a new revolutionary surge to open the gate to a thriving nation.
"The test will contribute to defending the sovereignty of the country and the nation and socialism and ensuring peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and the region around it with the might of Songun."

Djinn technology involved or not - more likely not, the NaPakis across the border will be smug in their belief that this was 'their' bum.
Most likely this was produce from Uncle Jiang's Wal-Mart. Maybe some newer maal that Uncle Jiang wanted to test himself.
4.7 richter earthquake is ~ about 20 Kiloton blast = grave significance for Japan and SoKo and in some ways India.
The only way that massa can ever counter Uncle Jiang is to bolster the yindoos - economically, militarily, until the yindoos have arrived as a replacement to everything that Dlagon supplies unkil's markets today. That is the ONLY way to temper dlagon and ensure good peaceful nonproliferative nonbelligerant behaviour. Massa can't do much about dlagon today with the economy down and being so addicted to dlagon's goods.
For all those who were waiting for a breakout in testing by P-5, specially china, here is your answer. China will never overtly test, it has got Pak / NoKo/ Iran / Burma to do that for its new designs on their soil. Where does that leave room for india to test in response to a Chinese test? India testing will be now with the acquiescence of foggy bottom and not otherwise.

Nah, as Indian economy grows larger and there is more global interdependence, they can't just launch sanctions with ease just because we test. This is especially true if China provokes us with any backdoor testing.

Both are using weapons from the same source, and the testing is all part of the same nuclear program. There is no "Pakistani nuclear program" and "north korean nuclear program".
There is only the Peopre's Lebubric Nucreal Ploglom.
The NoKo tamasha follows a very predictable cycle phase-matched to the US Presidential cycle. Remember that at the end of the Dubyan Empire, Dubya was rubbing his hands in glee at the immense foreign policy success of having "convinced" NoKO to abandon nuclear development in exchange for fuel oil and coal or something like that.
And what can the US do about it? See "begging" below:

Wow, till now I though they just had the tinpot variety kinda like our '74 era crude fission devices. If the early reports are true and this in 20kt range then they've managed to pull off something amazing. In 24yrs after our initial test we were able to pull off that kinda yield which is embarrassing.
I doubt we'll have the cojones in this generation to test again.
Edit: Narayanan, I think you more than likely completely right. I just can't imagine them pulling this off with such a weak industrial/scientific base.
