'There should be no suspicion over Pak's counter-terror commitments'

Pakistan's ambassador to the US Hussain Haqqani addressing a packed audience of American South Asia experts and policy analysts and a select few journalists at the Washington, DC-based think thank, the Atlantic Council, said, "For all those who still point out the lack of conviction on the part of Pakistan in fighting the militants, I would just point out that in 2009, we had an average of 10 Pakistani soldiers killed every day in fighting the militants."

"And there have been more than 31,000 casualties, of which 10,000 took place in 2009 ," he said, and added, "Pakistan has deployed 80 percent of its army aviation fighting the militants, and there are nine infantry divisions, 483 artillery pieces, and 142 tanks committed to this effort. So, sometimes people don't understand the nature of this war."
He claimed that Pakistan has "lost more intelligence personnel than any other country in the war against terrorism during the last two years.

The Secretary of State, in consultation with the Secretary of the Treasury and the US Attorney-General, has amended the designation of LeT by adding Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) as an alias of LeT, the State Department announced Wednesday.

The Department of the Treasury also designated LeT senior leader and current head of FIF, Hafiz Abdur Rauf, Mian Abdullah, the head of LeT's traders department, and Mohmmad Naushad Alam Khan, a key financial facilitator for LeT, as Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

‘NATO containers have caused Rs 82bn damage to Pak roads’: APP

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Communications Arbab Alamgir has said containers that carry NATO goods have caused damage of around Rs 82 billion to infrastructure of Pakistan’s communication network.

Giving an assessment, he said about 500 trucks travelled to Afghanistan daily from Karachi with supplies for NATO forces.

These heavy trucks were damaging Pakistani roads and highways, he told to VoA.

He said the government had taken up this issue with NATO, however no progress had been made in this regard.

“We will again take up the issue with NATO as our 80 percent traffic flows through these highways which are in very bad condition due to travel by heavy containers,” he maintained.

Please more money!
Next Arbab Alamgir would be saying, the NATO trucks have increased the carbon footprint in Pakistan, and children are having lung problems now. NATO should pay!

Per this (Click hiyar pileaj) paki source, there are 9574 KM of national highways and motorways including the famed KKH. That's 134,036,000 Square Meters of metalled surface (four-lane highways at an average of 3.5 meters width per lane). If my HP-19BII is right, that is 611 Paki Rupees (or $7.50) per SqM!! No progress yet in arrest of doctor accused of rape

POLICE are liaising with Interpol for the arrest of a doctor accused of raping a 32-year-old patient. He is believed to have fled to Pakistan.
Dr Nasir Syed was the chief medical officer of Nelson Mandela Bay’s state clinics at the time.
“The investigation is continuing and we are providing information to Interpol so that they can assist us with his arrest,” police spokesman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said. “We do not have a set deadline that he must be brought back to the country, but as soon as Interpol get hold of him they will notify us.”
Police discovered Syed had fled the country when they went to his Malabar house last week to arrest him. Days later, Syed’s colleague, Dr Mohammed Bhatti, 51, was arrested at his Glendinningvale home after he was accused of offering the woman money to drop the case.
Bhatti – who is based at the Rape Crisis Centre at Dora Nginza Hospital, but has been suspended pending the outcome of the case – was charged with defeating the ends of justice and corruption.
Bhatti was released on R5000 bail on the same day he was arrested and is due to appear in court again in February.

Man arrested in connection with Times Square probe faces immigration charge

A Pakistani immigrant from Watertown allegedly gave $4,900 to Faisal Shahzad, the would-be Times Square bomber, in a meeting in Watertown in February, federal authorities said today.

Ali allegedly entered the country in August 2009 to marry his then-fiancee and began working at a Brookline gas station without a work permit, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors allege that about three months later, after marrying a different woman, Ali defrauded the government by filing documents to adjust his immigration status. In those documents, prosecutors said, he knowingly omitted his unauthorized employment.

Ali also allegedly concealed his employment at the gas station when he was questioned by agents searching his Waverley Avenue apartment as part of the Times Square bombing investigation, prosecutors said.

MI6 'blamed for Taliban impostor'

The British intelligence service is said to have spent a year nurturing and paying a man claiming to be Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour, one of the most senior commanders of the Taliban.

They are said to have paid him at least $100,000 (£63,500) and flew him to meetings with Afghan officials in an attempt to broker a deal between the government and the insurgents.

Eventually an Afghan who knew the real Mansour revealed their mistake but the man was allowed to return to Pakistan, according to reports.

MI6 is thought to have made contact with "Mansour" in Quetta, the Pakistani city where the leadership of the Taliban is based.

It is unclear who was responsible for trying to verify "Mansour's" identity, but sources say the British cannot be held entirely responsible.

American officials have claimed they were "sceptical from the start" about the identity of the man who was supposed to be the second in command of the Taliban behind Mullah Omar.

Some officials say the man may simply have been a fraudster while others have claimed he was a Taliban agent and Afghans say he is nothing more than a shopkeeper.

Pakistani charity is blacklisted by US State Department

The US state department has added a Pakistani charity allegedly linked to militancy to its terror blacklist.

It said that Falah-e-Insaniyat (FeF) was an "alias" of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which is already on its list of "foreign terrorist organisations".
