What is this? And why is it important.. how does this relate to MOM insertion? Some gyan please thanks..
That means it is almost a perfect insertion. The orbit will vary from the expected only by a few 10 kms at its apogee.

This is the reduction in velocity that was planned for the MOM craft by the LAM motor. See Amber G's posts. Accuracy is amazing.

amber ji et al rocket gurus.. please note:
For most of the time the main engine was firing — 20 of the 24 crucial minutes — MOM was hiding behind Mars, adding to the suspense.
now as promised you have to start donating to those guys who worked on the accelerometers.

Fabulous achievement! Dumb layman's question: So is the spacecraft already in a 423km( or whatever) * 80,000km periapsis/apoapsis orbit, or is it still in the process of reaching there?

As much as i feel Modiji's speech touches every jingo's heart, I feel today is ISRO's day and he should cut short to let ISRO scientists speak.

Got it .. in simple words the spacecraft needs to be slowed down to that velocity in order to be captured into Mars orbit and we got there with precision autonomously!!
Amazing does not come close to describing it!!

Continuing the pollution:

As if on cue: http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2014 ... ars-orbit/
Critics of the mission have questioned whether India, where 40% of children are malnourished :(( :(( , should have a space program at all. But advocates argue that development in space in turn drives innovation on Earth.

“India’s space program has a socio-economic basis for purposes like remote sensing and medical advancement. From that perspective, none of the money has gone in an extravagant way where it isn’t used for the benefit of the common man,” said Ajey Lele, author of “Mission Mars: India’s Quest for the Red Planet.”
What a bunch of loony losers!!! :rotfl: :(( :((

These ISRO guys dress just like my dad, mismatched shirt with the pants. Shirts do not coordinate with the pants, they are lose, 70s design/patterns. Long and bad hair. This looked like some wedding ceremony. Felt so like home :-) And they do not really care how they look.

Congratulations to ISRO and its technicians, engineers, and scientists. They made the impossible possible and we can all dream of one day leaving the earth!

Let it be known to the world, that India can achieve greatness if it wants and do not pre-judge its people or its principles. MOM proves that India has the scientific and engineering capability for propulsion and guidance and can defend itself from any and all invaders.

From the facebook page :

Velocity at periapsis = 4.6351km/s
Velocity apoapsis = 0.2119 km/s

Any confirmed info on perigee ?
