btw if we look at a proper globe and not a 2D map, Algeria = area of portugal,spain,italy,germany, belgium, france and bartania together and Libya = rest of western europe. they are both HUGE countries which the eurocentric 2D projection map tries to gloss over.

Or the Kurds may not be in full control of the area contrary to what is shown on the map everywhere. Maybe, the map colouring is a way to claim the desired Kurdish territory and not always the territory under complete control. Future map of Syria?

I was thinking the same thing. The Russians are doing something very interesting. They are slowly incentivizing the Turks to make major moves against the Kurds. Without oil freely flowing through Kurdish lands the Turks have no reason to be nice to them.

World War I, 1915: Allies open attack on Dardanelles:

{March 18,} 1915, British and French forces launch an ill-fated naval attack on Turkish forces in the Dardanelles, the narrow, strategically vital strait in northwestern Turkey separating Europe from Asia. As the only waterway between the Black Sea in the east and the Mediterranean Sea in the west, the Dardanelles was a much-contested area from the beginning of the First World War. The stakes for both sides were high: British control over the strait would mean a direct line to the Russian navy in the Black Sea, enabling the supply of munitions to Russian forces in the east and facilitating cooperation between the two allies. The Allies were also competing with the Central Powers for support in the Balkans, and the British hoped that a victory against Turkey would persuade one or all of the neutral states of Greece, Bulgaria and Romania to join the war on the Allied side. Finally, as British Foreign Secretary Edward Grey put it, the approach of such a powerful Allied fleet towards the heart of the Ottoman Empire might provoke a coup d’etat in Constantinople—leading Turkey to abandon the Central Powers and return to its earlier neutrality. Support from the rest of the British war command came none too soon for Winston Churchill, the British first lord of the Admiralty, who had long been a proponent of an aggressive naval assault against Turkey at the Dardanelles. Though others—especially the French military command, led by their chief, Joseph Joffre—argued that the navy should not strike until ground troops could be spared from the Western Front, Churchill pushed to begin immediately. The attack, planned throughout the winter of 1915, opened on March 18, 1915, when six English and four French battleships headed towards the strait.
The Turks were not unaware, however, that an Allied naval attack on the strait was a strong possibility, and with German help, had greatly improved their defenses in the region. Though the Allies had bombarded and destroyed the Turkish forts near the entrance to the Dardanelles in the days leading up to the attack, the water was heavily mined, forcing the Allied navy to sweep the area before its fleet could set forth. The minesweepers did not manage to clear the area completely, however: three of the 10 Allied battleships—the British Irresistible and Ocean and the French Bouvet—were sunk, and two more were badly damaged.
With half the fleet out of commission, the remaining ships were pulled back. Though Churchill argued for the attack to be renewed the next day, claiming—erroneously, as it turned out—that the Turks were running low on munitions, the Allied war command opted to delay the naval attack at the Dardanelles and combine it with a ground invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula, which bordered the northern side of the strait.
The Allied landing on Gallipoli, which took place on April 25, 1919, met with a fierce Turkish defense inspired by Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal (the future president of Turkey, later known as Ataturk) and directed skillfully by the German commander Otto Liman von Sanders. For the remainder of the year, Allied forces, including large contingents from Australia and New Zealand, were effectively held at the beaches where they had landed, hampered by cautious and ineffective leadership from their British commander, Sir Ian Hamilton. Hamilton was replaced near the end of 1915 by Charles Monro; Monro recommended that the Allies abandon the operation, and the armies were fully evacuated by the end of January 1916. The failure of the campaign at the Dardanelles and at Gallipoli in 1915 resulted in heavy casualties—205,000 for the British empire and 47,000 for the French (there were also 250,000 Turkish casualties)—and was a serious blow to the reputation of the Allied war command, including that of Churchill, who resigned his position with the Admiralty after being demoted and headed to the Western Front to command a battalion.

In around the city, there is a marked rebel enclave on the maps. A deal was struck to let the rebels leave this place with their weapons. Homs was also the first place that the FSA set up control.

one side story of the gallipoli/dardanelles battles is that the british king's gardeners all volunteered to join the army and form their own company in service of the king emperor. these chaps were sent off to gallipoli and then one fateful day, under the command of the head gardener cum acting captain they headed off into the mists of the battle with their rifles at the ready and not one of them was ever seen again...

i expect the younger stable boys and gardener's apprentices probably ended up in the turkish army's recreational facilities for special night duties, the rest probably on the barbed wire

Erdogan declared first that they had downed a Russian jet and then ran to NATO. Only later did he declare that they didnt know the identity of the plane. Acted as advised by Unkil.

Damascus (AFP) - Russian and Syrian forces have been holding joint training exercises in Syria's Latakia province for the past fortnight to prepare for fighting in neighbouring rebel-held Idlib, a security source said Wednesday. "The joint Russian-Syrian training began two weeks ago in the north of Latakia province," a regime stronghold on the country's coast, the source told AFP. The exercises were being conducted in an area of Latakia with similar terrain to Idlib province, which is held by a coalition of {VERY MODERATE} rebels known as the Army of Conquest.
"In the next stage, Idlib will become the major destination and most important target of joint Russian-Syrian military operations," the source said.
The source said Idlib was now home to the largest number of rebel movements, excluding the Islamic State group, anywhere in the country.
The Army of Conquest, which includes Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front, wrested control of the entire province in northwestern Syria earlier this year, dealing a serious strategic and psychological blow to the regime.
Staunch government ally Moscow began an aerial bombing campaign in support of regime forces on September 30, saying it was targeting IS and other extremist groups.
But rebels from other groups {such as WHOTUS and CNN} accuse Russia of focusing its firepower more on moderate and Islamist opposition fighters than IS.

On the S-300, the source concuded: “Syrian air defense crew completed their training on the S -300 missile system in Russia and received the full sets agreed with the government the Syrian forces. The Russian-made S-300s, which can engage 12 targets simultaneously at distances of 200 kilometers and heights of up to 27 kilometers, will be deployed in the liberated areas to cover the full Syrian geography. Damascus is expected – said the source – to announce, soon, that every unidentified jet flying in the sky of Syria will be considered hostile and will be shot down if no previous coordination have been made with the Syrian authorities. Syria is ready to provided safe corridors for those willing to strike terrorism”.

It is unlikely that Syria would declare war in the sky on the western coalition hitting ISIS group despite the deployment of the S-300 and when it will be officially announced. Nonetheless, it is certainly a strong message to Turkey that is seeing its never lasting dream of “safe-zone” vanishing in the air now more than ever. It is also a way for Damascus to put pressure on the west, mainly France and the United Kingdom, to force a diplomatic coordination with the actual government, also in terms of security, intelligence and “war on terror”. However, sources in the Syrian capital confirm that Assad doesn’t expect a sudden return of the Blue/White/Red flag over the French Embassy and the return of an Ambassador, despite the Paris attack. But for the war on terror to be efficient, Paris needs Damascus, and not the other way around, for it’s own national security protection. There are over 1400 French Mujahedeen Takferees fighting along ISIS and al-Qaeda in Bilad al-Sham. Many of these are listed in Assad intelligence files. The DGSE, French external intelligence service, will have no access to these without a diplomatic price in exchange. It will be a challenge for France to fly its jets over Syria without any coordination with Damascus and with the risk of being shot down by the S-300, mistaken for a Turkish or unfriendly jet, like Israel.
