Well, there was this news just few days back that Konkan Railway has finally achieved 100% electrification.

When I last travelled in Feb this year, I saw that some percentage of work was still pending. Awesome that KR could manage to complete all pendency.

nuclear powered trains would be very risky
radioactivity in case of an accident is an example

also, I dint see a mention of nuclear powered trains i that link (in the press release)

Indeed.

The radioactive debris will be spread secularly over a much larger area.

and without discrimination, it will fry everybody's testimonials

cartelization of bidders for railways contracts

It is a fancy name for corruption and runs flawlessly in every corner of the country with the active connivance of senior railway officials and politicos

this is a very old congi/commie "resource" mobilization methodology running almost since the pre independence days and it is a very refined and fine tuned process

I had mentioned this some weeks ago and now here is the proof

there is no ideal world Aditya_V ji

these guys are a cancer spreading through the body politik

a strong domestic manufacturing capability can be built without the entrenched additional drag of corruption on this large a scale

chai pani one understands but certainly not this

you have no idea of the sheer scale of it, institutionalized over the decades by the congis and the commies, it has been a cash cow since the britshit days and now even under the new dispensation it is endemic in many die-nasties and their minions

Train 18 was sabotaged by these cartels using an unwarranted "vigilance inquiry" under the very noses of this govt and the govt was powerless to prevent it.

Indeed, many of the coordinating saboteurs of the Train 18 project were deeply interested entities headquartered offshore which are suppliers to the IR, in one form or the other

can India really afford such cartels or as you suggest, one should just let it go, in the dubious interests of "lets us build strong domestic manufacturing capabilities with a few players".

it will be much more advantageous for India to have a broad based "domestic manufacturing capabilities" instead of creating monopolies and new cartelization capable entities

After years of "vigilance inquiry", the people who were "investigated" have all been cleared and hopefully this project is back on track

I want to document the fact that Britshits did not create the Indian Railways as some goodwill to Indian people but in fact used the train system as a means to loot ($45T) India. There are many brown sahibs who defend Britshits about the so called "benefits" that Brit did for India. There is information that certain lines on the railways were euphemistically called "famine relief" trains, when famines created by the brits killed 80-90 million Indians over a period of its entire rule.

An Asian women narrates,
How Britain Stole $45 Trillion from India with Trains; Empires of Dirt

There is a misguided idea that India should be grateful for the democracy, law and trains that the British Empire brought to their country. But along with these ‘gifts’, Britain also stole $45 trillion from India during its long and oppressive rule, which culminated in the biggest mass migration in human history during the Partition of India and Pakistan. And those beloved trains? They became the sites of mass slaughter as violent clashes occurred when over four million people were uprooted from their homes and forced to trek to a Muslim-majority Pakistan and a Hindu-majority India. VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng reveals exactly why India shouldn’t be grateful for their trains.

Centre looking at options following delay in delivery of Vande Bharat train parts from Ukraine

India procures the wheels and some other components of the Vande Bharat trains from Ukraine.

29th April 2022

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said there have been some delays in the delivery of certain components of Vande Bharat trains by the manufacturer in Ukraine.

The MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said options are being looked at to ensure the delivery takes place.

"Ukraine manufactures some components. There has been an impact on the delivery schedule. We are looking at options so that delivery takes place on time," he said at a media briefing.

He was asked whether the ongoing conflict in Ukraine delayed the supply.

"The Railway ministry has the details. But we are coordinating to ensure that we receive the components as soon as possible," Bagchi said.

India procures the wheels and some other components of the Vande Bharat trains from Ukraine.

India's import orders to a Ukrainian firm for thousands of wheelsets for Vande Bharat trains were been hit by the war.

Ukraine, which is one of the world's largest suppliers of such wheels, has virtually stopped new production with most staffers joining the war effort after Russia launched a military offensive on February 24.

The railways' plan of launching dozens of new Vande Bharat train this year ran into troubles as the entire order given to the Ukraine-based firm -- 36,000 wheels at a cost of $16 million -- looked undeliverable.

World quality need world prices, or at least not the cut rate pricing that is asked of bidders/in-house manufacturers. IMHO we are penny wise pound foolish when it comes to public infra and property. These assets have long lives and are put to rather stressful use, so they should be build in a commensurate high quality manner which emphasizes total lifecycle cost including repairs, replacements and potential for accidents, rather than handing it over to the L1 bidder.

L1 bidding doesn't mean low price , it's the inefficiency of our system that led us to believe that. L1 procurement is through which Govt is supposed to get best quality services or materials using public money. But our babus have relegated it to low price , as making qualitive judgement is beyond their capacity . Making decision will make them answerable which they want to avaoid at any cost , so the easiest part is price and every one in the system is afraid of questioning that.

Bharat Forge is supplying parts to Mercedes Benz and other automotive manufacturing. They can easily make wheels for the railways. I don't understand the ping-pong of Euro nations involved in IR manufacturing. This is a serious hole in which India places itself, instead of having critical components made in India. Atmanirbhar Bharat all the way please. All private company parts suppliers like Medha are required to be screened for the same on supply matters.

He says there is no reason why cast wheels should not be preferred for passenger coach wheel sets as opposed to forged wheel sets. Of course he doesn't quite explicitly assert that but confines himself to merely criticising that the Railway Board which has been dogmatic in closing its eyes to such a possibility. Now a flat bed wagon with double stack containers on Dedicated Freight Corridors may well have an axle load on par with passenger coaches. Also DFC trains are supposed to run at top speeds of 120 kmph which is not significantly lower than speeds for Vandhe Bharat trains. So can we switchover to cast wheels which eliminates imports?

Castings are typically susceptible to particulate contamination and air/cavity encapsulation that act as centers for crack nucleation and propagation. Forging is a superior technique to produce high density high strength structures that can bear high cyclical loads. This is a safety issue.

Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Ready for 180 Km/h Trial Run, Can Cover Route in 50 Minutes
The trial of the first phase of Rapid Rail from Delhi to Meerut is going to take place in the coming days. A 17-km high-speed track from Sahibabad to Duhai (Uttar Pradesh) will be prepared. This train will run at a speed of 180 kmph, which will also be the first in the country to have a business or ‘premium’ coach on a regional corridor.

For a long time, the passengers travelling from Delhi to Meerut have been waiting for this rapid train. For the trial, the first railway coach has reached Duhai. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is all set to run the train on time. The trial from Sahibabad to Duhai will start soon, while passengers will be able to travel through this train from 2023.
According to the Indian Railways, this train can travel from Delhi to Meerut within 50 to 55 minutes. This is the first system in the country’s rail network under which a 180 kmph train will cover a distance of 100 km in one hour during the first phase.

The journey of 82-km from Delhi to Meerut through Ghaziabad will be completed in 55 minutes. During the journey, 25 stations are being prepared from Delhi to Meerut. The train will stop for 30 seconds at every station and will be available every 5-10 minutes.

The unique feature of this train is that a stretcher has been arranged in the last compartment of the train coach. If a patient is referred from Meerut to Delhi, a separate train coach has been arranged so that he/she can reach at a cheaper cost.

A separate train coach has also been arranged for women as well as for the differently-abled persons and can be easily folded if they are unused during the train journey. The general seats have been made extremely comfortable.

Rlys removes, forces 20 top officers to retire

Thursday, 12 May 2022 | Deepak Kumar Jha | New Delhi

In an unprecedented step, the Indian Railways on Wednesday removed from service 20 top class one officials, including eight joint secretary level officers, and top electrical and mechanical engineers.

With this, around 100 top level officers have either been dismissed or forced to opt for Voluntary Retirement Services (VRS) in the last 10 months. They include three secretary rank level officers.

While a general manager rank officer was ‘advised’ to opt for VRS to make an honourable exit from the services on Tuesday, the largest employer of the country dismissed 20 officers who had adverse vigilance reports against them.

The railways invoked rule 56(J) of the Department of Personnel and Training service rules which says a Government employee can be forced to retire or be dismissed after being served a minimum of three month’s notice or a similar period’s pay.

The move is part of the Union Government’s efforts to weed out non-performers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, after he took over the office in July 2021, has repeatedly warned officials “to take VRS and sit at home” if they do not perform.

Railway Ministry sources said the 20 people against whom the 56(J) were invoked include four officials each from the electrical and signalling services, three each from medical and civil, two from personnel and one each from stores, traffic and mechanical.

Under the VRS scheme, an employee is paid a salary equivalent to two months’ pay for every year of service left.

But the similar benefit is not available in compulsory retirement.

Under the provisions relating to pre-mature retirement in the Fundamental Rules (FR) and the CCS (Pension) Rules, 1972, the appropriate authority has the absolute right to retire a Government servant under FR 56(j), FR 56(l) or Rule 48 (1)(b) of the CCS (Pension) Rules, 1972 as the case may be, if it is necessary to do so in public interest.

However, the 75 officials who put in their papers and decided to opt for VRS are those who have been denied promotion or sent on leave or circumstances have been created to force them to opt for retirement.

In July last year, nine officials including member (Rolling Stock and Traction) Rahul Jain put in their papers, followed by six in August, four in September, seven in October, nine in November, six in December. In 2022 , 11 officials in January opted for VRS, seven in February, eight in March, five in April and three this month.

Another Member of the Railway Board Ravindra Gupta also opted for VRS last month while general manager of Rail Wheel Factory A K Dubey was “advised” to proceed on VRS at earliest failing which the railways could invoke the DoPT dismissal rule. “There were strong vigilance recommendations against Dubey,” confirmed a railway official.

Haflong RS seems to have been inaugurated in year 2014. And the damage seems to be very severe. Do not know if the railway station was built on a land slide prone area. At least now it would be better to check the area and take precautionary measures against land slides. Konkan Railways also was plagued by this problem of land slides.

Growing vertically. 4cm/year mount Everest. Growth is fastest at the mountains.....that is why they are higher as compare to the average hight in first place. Secondly both sides of the bridge go up at the same rate. Railways tracks are made to go through expansion of 2-3 Cm any ways. They used to have a special hard plastic between two pieces of rails( in old days). I do not know if it is still the case. That is done to go through temp changes.

World’s tallest railway pier bridge 75% complete.

Image
Indian Railways has completed work on 75% of Noney Bridge, the world’s tallest railway pier bridge in Manipur, part of the 111-km Jiribam-Imphal project. The bridge is part of the Railways’ efforts to improve connectivity with remote areas where transportation is still a major problem. The work is being undertaken by North East Frontier Railway.

The bridge, being constructed across the Ijai river near Noney, has been described by experts as an engineering marvel. Standing at 141 metres, it will be the tallest pier bridge in the world, surpassing the record currently held by the 139-metre Mala-Rijeka viaduct in Montenegro.

The bridge will be 703 metres long, with the piers being constructed using hydraulic augers. The tall piers needed are specially designed using slip-form technique to ensure efficient and continual construction. The alignment passes through steep rolling hills of the Patkai region on the Himalayas’ eastern trail.

The bridge, being built at an estimated cost of Rs 374 crore, is expected to be completed by December 2023.

JIRIBAM-IMPHAL PROJECT

The Jiribam-Imphal railway project will connect the Manipur capital Imphal with the country’s overall broad-gauge network, reducing travel time from the current 10-12 hours to 2.5 hours. At present, crossing the valley requires a 220-km journey.

Chief Engineer Sandeep Sharma had earlier told Asian News International: “With the completion of the project, the 111-km distance will be covered in 2-2.5 hours. Presently, the distance between Jiribam-Imphal (NH-37) is 220 km, which took about 10-12 hours of travelling.”

He also spoke about the hurdles being faced during construction: “Landslides often occur on NH-37 during monsoon, which is the only route to this place. From April to October, there is immense rainfall here. During that time, it is difficult to work here. There are also some problems related to insurgency, which creates a problem sometimes.”

Southern Railways' popular trains to soon have just two sleeper coaches

Each LHB sleeper coach has 78 berths. Once the composition changes, the number of sleeper berths per train will drop to 156 from the present number of 546 to 780.

Bad move IMO. Instead of extending A/C services to all, including the poorest travellers, make even unreserved coaches A/C, the IR ministry is trying to think like a corporate pandering to the elite. We have to come out of this third world mindset and treat all people, especially the poor with a lot more consideration.
