Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Military Vehicles: MPVs, Trucks, FATs, LSV, LAMV, TEL/TELARs, Hovercrafts etc.
This is a category of hardware which really doesn't capture the imagination of Jingos but this is where, in a short while, our domestic industry has come a long way. I feel that this category of military hardware requires its own thread as it just gets buried in the Indian Army general discussion thread.
This thread will most likely be a slow moving one, as it is not a fancy topic and the vehicles stay in service for a generation. This thread may be also be used to cover the history of now decommissioned military vehicles such as Shaktimaan and Jonga. Mods may delete this thread if they feel the topic can be adequately served from existing threads.
---------------------
To kick off the discussion, I just saw the video retweeted by Saurav Jha showing Ashok Leyland Stallion in action.
https://twitter.com/IDFIndianDef/status ... 6525802496
This is axel breaking stuff, and yet truck after truck after truck soldier on.

What seems to be a new variant of Tata LSV spotted near Pune. It is for now being referred to as Tata LSV V2 / Merlin.
We had seen the cad images of this vehicle last year
The same vehicle was earlier seen getting tested in the Himalayas.

Another image of a weird looking vehicle has been circulating on the internet for a while...
This appears to be a weird modification of Mahindra Axe. From the fresh appearance of new prototypes, it seems like the Army might be going in for LSV soon.

Great Thread. I hope you do not mind, but I changed the Title Thread as there was too many abbreviations in there.

Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Thakur_B. Fascinating thread. Will proposed/concept/indevelopment models also be showcased here ?
With our private developers getting more traction under the present GOI & make-in-india/made-in-india, it looks like we will be seeing faster and varied developments here than earlier times.

Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Yes Manish ji, I will dig out my old posts on the former LSV and LAMV contenders/concepts and post them here.

Fascinating thread. Please keep educating us on this topic.
By the way, on Tratec’s website there is a mention of a 70 tin missile carrier( with no picture). So, an yet to be disclosed 70 ton missile. The plot thickens.

Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
There used to be three broad vehicle requirements by IA, namely, GSV (General Service Vehicle), LSV (Light Specialist Vehicle) and LAMV (Light armoured multiprpose vehicle).
GSV order went to Tata with their Safari Storme which will replace around thousands of Maruti Gypsies.
As of now, Tata, Kalyani, M&M & Ashok Leyland are the parties known to be slugging it out for requirement of 1300 Nos LSV and 702 Nos LAMV. The expected value of LAMV contract is supposed to be in the range of 1.5 Crs per vehicle (Suck it Bentley). These competitions also attracted some smaller players who purchased design rights / made tie ups with established players in the field, given the fact that our firms have barely graduated to designing half decent consumer segment vehicles, extreme off roaders are still a nice field.
Here's and example of one such "domestic" offering; Shri Lakshmi Defence's Viper (based on Terradyne Gurkha which was featured in fast five, again based on a ford chasis)
Established players have taken the same route. Tata's offering for the LAMV, which has been very imaginatively named LAMV , has been designed in tie up with Supacat UK.
Tata also seems to have abandoned the older drab LSV design for a scaled down version of their LAMV as LSV V2, which is a shame, because their older vehicle, though not as TFTA, seemed very utilitarian.
Kalyani, is known to be offering Raven Light strike vehicle for LAMV, based on Israeli MDT Tiger., designed around a Toyota Chasis
Ashok Leyland had done a tie up with Panhard and were offering "Colt", which is available in both LSV and LAMV configurations. This seems to be outright license production of Panhard PVP.
Whatever Mahindra is offering, seems to be under wraps. IMHO, these 5-8 ton behemoths for LAMV seem to be overkill and overpriced considering the only advantage they bring forth over LSV is V shaped hull and protection from .50 cal weapons.

Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
I hope we don't go the screwdriver-giri even for the 4x4 requirements, given the huge automotive industry we have here. BTW why do the tires of most of the Indian designed/version vehicles seem so SDRE, is it for fuel efficiency ? Look like they could use some Whey Protein supplements.

Neat..
As an aside, some of these might even have civilian spin-offs and aquire cult status (like the Khan Hummer)

Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
The two "commandos" with the Mahindra Scorpio are models - each with massive tattoos and evidence of gymming+protein supplements. Lots of that in India nowadays unlike my gen with strings for muscles. Men with such bulging muscles are too inflexible and possibley too slow to be commandos.

Force motors has won the competition for Light Strike Vehicle with their offering based on Gurkha, a design heavily inspired by G wagon. Hopefully the force LSV engine has been updated from the puny underpowered engine on the Gurkha.

Really well done
Now will wait to hear about the termination of the jihadi vermin responsible for this..
