Live updates: Trump calls for Fed rate cut as U.S. coronavirus deaths rise; markets eye economic rescue
By Adam Taylor, March 3, 2020.

With the coronavirus spreading unpredictably and Americans bracing for an increasing toll at home, pressure mounted for global policymakers to respond with financial crisis-style stimulus measures to ward off the threat to the world economy.
In a tweet early Tuesday, after the U.S. death toll rose to six, President Trump called for a “big” interest-rate cut by the Federal Reserve “to make up for China’s coronavirus situation and slowdown,” as finance ministers from the Group of Seven economies prepared to discuss how to counter the growing economic storm. Central banks in the United States, Japan, Britain and France have hinted publicly at stimulus steps, and Australia cut interest rates Tuesday, but markets in Tokyo slipped as a wave of optimism that propelled U.S. markets higher on Monday appeared to peter out.

I feel like Sultan Erdogan: Should I send even more of my much-depleted UAV fleet and imported ammo into the stock market for the Certain Mother Of All Victories, or retreat to my cave and let out the squeal that I feel like letting out?
Deep State is blatantly manipulating the market. The rate-cut todin was panic+manipulation: look at the stock-marked "whipsaw": 200 points up, 800 points down, then 200 points back up. LOTS of money made by ppl who knew what was coming, a few minutes ahead of others.

Growth turned negative in China a while back. Per Worldometers, the peak for new cases OUTSIDE cheen was March 1. Dropped yesterdin and hopefully todin.
Active Cases now is below 40K as of March 2.
People Recovered is now WELL above active cases. (>48K as of March 2).
Slope of Active Cases line is steady, past few days: now extrapolates to zero in about 1.5 to 2 months. Hopefully slope will turn sharply downwards by tomorrow.

The panic-generation is sheer market-manipulation - other than the Chickens Little on WhatsApp etc.
See today's real news:
1) GOTUS says NO reduction of tariffs on cheen products (so there is no serious concern about a recession due to paucity of cheen products).
2) GOTUS did a rate cut citing COVID panic.

Think of the message: it is just to provide a window of growth for US and G6 (7 minus cheen).
The real market-drags on G7 are the Turkish invasion of Syria and GREECE, which will drag down markets in Europe. Of course Boeing/Raytheon stock should go up because US is mulling sending more ammo to Turkey.

Gerardji, this is a sad example of the "Let Ur WhatsApp Do Ur Thinking" that infects BRF too.

HOW can "3.4%" be "higher than previously thought"? Who did the thinking, when they could have done elementary calculation from the published data? And BTW, 3.4 is waaaaaay lower than the actual rate, which is around 6% now, but started at 100%.
I get the same feeling as I used to when I tried being on a certain forum, chitchatting with Pakis. They would post some sh1t, we would destroy them with facts... and and 20 pages later, they would post the same sh1t again.

... and right on cue there are those that take that as gospel truth. So much EZer than thinking..

Thanks, ramana
Ramana - Daily updates in one place is a good idea but, FWIW I find Sooraj live updates quite useful too.

Also a thought - BRF has a high visibility so may be moderators can provide leadership to keep the noise down and make this thread more focused on "Resource" part of the thread - references to cow-dung cure, Pingregi (silly use of English) and idiotic tamasha in the form of "madarsa math and wild theories .. may be popular in brf but may be a separate thread can be made for that - keeping this thread a as a primary a resource and news-update and educationally focused.

Anyway, as you said daily updates in one place is a good idea. So here it is (From worldometer but posted in full here for the record: )

Live updates: U.S. reports 9th coronavirus death as the virus continues to spread; Fed cuts interest rate
By Adam Taylor, Miriam Berger, Michael Brice-Saddler and Siobhán O'Grady March 3, 2020.

Washington state reported new deaths from the coronavirus on Tuesday, raising the U.S. death toll from the virus to nine. With illness spreading unpredictably and Americans bracing for an increasing impact at home, the Federal Reserve made an emergency interest rate cut earlier on Tuesday, slashing the benchmark U.S. rate by half a percentage point.
The central bank has not made an emergency move like this since late 2008. It was also a sign that global central banks are prepared to act to contain the economic fallout from the coronavirus. The move came after President Trump, in a tweet, called for a “big” interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve “to make up for China’s coronavirus situation and slowdown.”
The markets quickly rallied after the Federal Reserve announced the decision. The rebound came after a volatile morning, with futures pointing positive and then making a U-turn.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Moon Jae-in declared “war” on the coronavirus as government officials were placed on 24-hour alert and health tests expanded in virus-hit areas. The number of confirmed cases in South Korea tops 5,000, the most outside China. About 70 countries have reported incidences of the virus, with the number of cases in the United States topping 100 across 15 states.

Here is one reason some of us are skeptical of Chinese data. South Korea now has more than 3x the cases per person than any province in China outside of Hubei.

The secondary attack rate for SARS-CoV-2 — the virus causing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) — is under 1% among close contacts of U.S. patients, according to findings in MMWR.

Public health officials actively monitored 445 people who had close contact with one of 10 U.S. patients with travel-related COVID-19. Over 14 days, 12% of contacts developed new or worsening symptoms and were tested for SARS-CoV-2. Two contacts — household members — tested positive. The overall symptomatic secondary attack rate was estimated to be 0.45% for close contacts and 10.5% for household members. The researchers write: "Despite intensive follow-up, no sustained person-to-person transmission of symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 was observed."
