BART Records Reveal Racial Disparities In Fare Evasion Enforcement
https://www.kalw.org/post/bart-records- ... 0#stream/0
A public records request has confirmed stark racial disparities in BART fare evasion enforcement.
Black Bay Area residents make up about ten percent of BART riders. But according to newly released data, black travellers receive nearly half of fare evasion citations.
The disparity is even more dramatic when it comes to young people. Over a year, BART issued about fifteen hundred citations to teenagers. The overwhelming majority of those teenagers were black or Latino.

10 years. 179 arrests. No white defendants. DEA tactics face scrutiny in New York.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national ... story.html
Lopez’s lawyers say his arrest was part of an alarming trend within the Drug Enforcement Administration and other agencies that has, they contend, produced racially biased results — not only in New York but also in other major U.S. cities where federal law enforcement is working aggressively to reduce violent crime.
In the last decade, none of the 179 defendants arrested in DEA reverse-sting cases in the Southern District of New York were white, according to an accounting by the Federal Defenders of New York, a nonprofit legal defense group that represents Lopez. All but two were black and Latino, the data show.

Why Aren’t White Mothers Being Blamed for the Opioid Crisis Like Black Mothers During the Crack Epidemic?
https://www.patheos.com/blogs/raceandgr ... -epidemic/
Presently, as the nation deals with a drug epidemic that is not popularly associated with African-Americans, our government has miraculously seen the racial white light in their approach. Instead of criminalizing, targeting, and heavily penalizing people with opioid addictions with mandatory minimums, there has been a broader appeal to sympathy and treatment.
The narratives give a backstory where the people tend to come from “good” families who are victims of structures beyond their control—targeted by the “evil” large pharmaceutical corporations.
They receive reparations for their victimhood in the forms of taxpayer supported treatment and settlements against pharmaceutical companies.
Despite all of these changes and talk of treatment, Black people are still targeted with an incarceration approach.
I recall a different narrative from the United States’ War on Drugs. I recall the media working over-time to dehumanize Black mothers and families crippled by drug dependency and the disproportionate over-policing and heavier penalties. The media helped shape a narrative to shame and justify the lack of empathy and investment in treatment/care.
Sensationalized media portrayals about Black mothers on crack given birth to a new generation of crack babies out of wedlock sought to reinforce stereotypes and controlling narratives of inherent cultural deficiency among African Americans.

Virginia prosecuted 46,000 plus marijuana cases in 2018
https://southsidedaily.com/local-news/2 ... s-in-2018/
Such a change in the law would have a sweeping effect throughout Virginia: Last year, more than 46,000 marijuana possession cases were prosecuted in the state — and almost 20,000 people, most of them African Americans, were found guilty, leaving them with a criminal record. Although the crime is only a misdemeanor, a conviction still can hurt job prospects and other opportunities.
African Americans make up 19% of Virginia’s population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But they represented 49% of all marijuana possession prosecutions — and 51% of all defendants found guilty. More than 1,400 of every 100,000 black Virginians faced marijuana charges in General District Court last year.
In contrast, non-Hispanics whites make up 61% of Virginia’s population. But they represented 48% of all marijuana possession prosecutions — and 45% of all defendants found guilty. About 425 of every 100,000 white Virginians faced marijuana charges in General District Court last year.

To pay off fines and other debts, inmates in Mississippi’s little-known restitution centers must work grueling low-wage jobs, pay rent and endure strip searches.
In this world between prison and freedom, they often don’t know when they’ll get to go home.

Hate crimes are reserved for only few.
Sikh man told to ‘go back to your country’, hit with car: No hate crime charge
https://indicanews.com/2020/06/10/sikh- ... me-charge/
The Jefferson County district attorney’s office in Colorado is not convinced that the attack on an elderly Sikh man in Lakewood was a hate crime, even if the man who rammed his vehicle into him told him to “go back to your country”.
Lakhwant Singh, 61, suffered a broken left arm, broken ribs, internal bleeding, a possible clavicle fracture, spinal fracture, and staples in his head because of the attack, which happened at his Two Angels Liquors at 11 pm April 29 this year.
Singh was only recently transferred to a rehabilitation facility after a month in the hospital.

How marginalized communities in the South are paying the price for ‘green energy’ in Europe
How marginalized communities in the South are paying the price for ‘green energy’ in Europe
Andrea Macklin never turns off his TV. It’s the only way to drown out the noise from the wood mill bordering his backyard, the jackhammer sound of the plant piercing his walls and windows. The 18-wheelers carrying logs rumble by less than 100 feet from his house, all day and night, shaking it as if an earthquake has taken over this tranquil corner of North Carolina.
He’s been wearing masks since long before the coronavirus pandemic, just to keep the dust out of his lungs. Some nights, he only sleeps for two or three hours. Breathing is a chore. “I haven’t had proper rest since they’ve been here,” he said.
That was eight years ago, when the world’s largest biomass producer, Enviva, opened its second North Carolina facility just west of Macklin’s property in Garysburg. The operation takes mostly hardwood trees and spits out biomass, or wood pellets, a highly processed and compressed wood product burned to generate energy. Enviva is one of nearly a dozen similar companies benefiting from a sustainability commitment made 4,000 miles away, more than a decade ago.
In 1996, scientists at the United Nations devised a method to measure global carbon emissions. To simplify the process and avoid double counting, they suggested emissions from burning biomass should be calculated where the trees are cut down, not where the wood pellets are burned.
The EU adopted this methodology in its Renewable Energy Directive, allowing energy companies to burn biomass produced in the US without having to report the emissions.
The accounting method — which was never intended to assign national responsibility for carbon emissions, according to climate experts — has created a lot of discussion and disagreement among advocates, scientists and policymakers. But ultimately it is not the accounting of carbon that is the problem, it’s the emissions.
“It doesn’t change the physical reality,” said Tim Searchinger, senior research scholar at Princeton University. “A law designed to reduce emissions that in reality encourages an increase in emissions … has to be flawed,” he said, referring to Europe’s directive
Ultimately, Europe is not reducing emissions by burning American trees — it’s just outsourcing them to the United States.
Re: United States - Human Rights Monitor
A whole lot of "reducing CO2 emissions" initiatives are based on dubious calculations like the above. They export/dump plastics and all other kinds of waste to Africa and SE Asia since its way too expensive to recycle any of that in EU. No one seems to dare to oppose them because they fear a "when did you stop beating your wife?" type green-woke backlash.
India seems to play along nicely at the moment, but in the gunsights of the green lobbyists for its huge population and its massive energy needs (per capita is conveniently ignored). These same lobbyists dare not speak against China, so they will take it all out on the world's 2nd most populous country. We need to tread very carefully here and not sign up to any agreements to earn favours like trade deals with US or EU which contain emissions related limits and conditions, quotas etc.
