Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
One noob question
Does the EOTS on F35 work as IRST also?
Does the EOTS on F35 work as IRST also?
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
^^ The short answer is, Yes. Long answer is, there are always trade-offs, even with a upper nose mounted solution. Data is scarce so it cannot be effectively gauged how effective it might be as an IRST solution.

Identify the aircraft.
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
^^^ Isn't this the Casino Royale aircraft?
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
Yes. I saw it in a bollywood song and was scratching my head for weeks. The hump, fuselage and wings were distinctly 747 but those podded twin engines didn't make any sense. Finally I searched for odd 747 variant and got the following.

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
A question of Jet Engine gurus here:
How does the F-16 manage to attain Mach 2+ speeds without the use of a variable intake ramp/cone or a DSI? Every other Mach 2+ aircraft needs one of those technologies to cross Mach 1.8. The F-16 seems to be the only exception other than the F-22 which uses a different caret compression technology which I do not understand. It is apparently also used on the SuperHornet but the SH is limited to Mach 1.6 while the F-22 can go beyond Mach 2.2.

A question on Google Earth and other Map experts.
Over the past few weeks I have been trying to map the border road infra by manually checking and following branching tracks and roads on the GE. Right now focusing on Aksai chin and Ladakh area both sides. The question is how can i see LAC marking as the GE is not showing the LAC, at least in my login. I have switched on "everything" in the layers option.

It won't show from Indian IP addresses. Wikimapia does, though it is not always accurate. For example, it shows only the chinese claim line over Pangong Tso along with the IB. But it is a good starting point, nevertheless.
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
Is there a potential route to Xinxiang from the Indian side?
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
I think only latest F-16 Block 70/72 touches Mach 2, the Original Block 5/10/15/30 etc had a max speed of around 1.6. The latest versions Block 70 and Block 60 as Lockheed Martin announces use the technology from the F-22/ F 35 programmesnachiket wrote:A question of Jet Engine gurus here:

OT Alert!!
A few years (6-7) back someone here posted a YouTube video of Indian Army exercises in desert (compilation of various exercise videos) with an amazing music in background. I downloaded and kept it for many years. Wanted to show it to my son who just turned 8, however, I could not find it on HD or YouTube. It was initial days when TFTA kind of videos were hard to come by. Old timers would remember as it was one of initial few who led to creation of many YouTube channels. Will be very grateful If anyone remembers or share a link... Thanks

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
Is it possible to list out all programs in the first page of a thread...
For example, just list out names of all military helicopter programs in first page of 'Indian Military Helicopters'...
Or list out all missile programs in first page of 'Indian Missiles' etc....
They may be arranged with sub-headings like
Army Helicopters, Navy Helicopters, Air Force Helicopters or something like Ballistic Missiles, Cruise missiles etc...
This will help noobies like me to get the overall picture of things... There seem to be too many programs and it is somewhat confusing given the wide range of acronymns...

Hi, a question for the mods and old timers. the images attached in the threads sometimes don't show up when there are no links. there is only "image" when browsing on a laptop, but the same are displayed when browsing through a smartphone. i am using Firefox for browsing. do i have to have any addons or do anything else to get the images when browsing on a laptop?
Not sure if this question came in the newbie section or the forum feedback page?

Not sure if this is the right thread for it but do you all know some good resources for a deep dive into the history of the Indian Intelligence community ?
Any good books/threads/forums/articles etc that showcase some of their greatest achievements , biggest failures , de-classified missions ,double agents etc etc
I feel like i've read so much on Mossad,GRU,OSS etc but barely anything about R&AW

British and Chinese got their nuke designs from Americans and Soviets respectively. Only other declared nuclear powers which made nukes on their own are France and India.
Any argument against it?

Is there a good source to learn about meaning of numbers and formation signs on military vehicles? Specially our neighbours?
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
How are nuke bombs different from a TNT bomb when it comes to carrying them under Jets? I am asking this as I have read many a times that not every country would allow India to use their MMRCA for carrying nukes in times of need. French on the other hand do not mind us using their platforms for nuke delivery.
So what makes nukes different that stops them from being carried underneath fighter bombers that it would need special permission from the Jet makers to use them?

If I was to hazard a guess, the hardwiring and shielding against EMP for one plus the ability of the flight/mission computer to accept the weapon and calculate the necessary parameters to release the weapon accurately to name a few.rajsunder wrote:How are nuke bombs different from a TNT bomb when it comes to carrying them under Jets? what stops countries from using nukes in gliding bombs such as spice or hammer? That way one need not worry about EMP or the parameters to release the weapon accurately.Bala Vignesh wrote:If I was to hazard a guess, the hardwiring and shielding against EMP for one plus the ability of the flight/mission computer to accept the weapon and calculate the necessary parameters to release the weapon accurately to name a few.rajsunder wrote:How are nuke bombs different from a TNT bomb when it comes to carrying them under Jets? Hello. Request to please suggest a good reference source for understanding how catapults on Aircraft carriers work. Their different components, their compromises etc. Differences in steam and EMALs. Preferably in simpler not too technical language. Also text (with images) preferred over video. Thanks.
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
When a helicopter crashes there is little scope of survival.
And the crashing splintering rotors cause more destruction.
Why can't the system be designed such that on a crash like free fall, the rotors are blown off by a charge, and subsequently a recovery chute is deployed to increase chances of survival.
Too far fetched?

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
it may create an issue for folks outside/in line of fire of the rotors that are blown off?

Plus there may be packaging constraints, considering the size and the various forces that are present on the rotors and the blades.

Is anyone in touch with Deejay, Philips and Austin? Have not seen them posting for some time. Hope it is because of being busy in work and not due to any health issues. If anyone is in touch, a line of confirmation will be great ( if appropriate and not too personal). Thanks... Vikram
Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous - Aug 2016
I think Austin saar hasn't been posting for a while now. maybe moved onto Twitter or something else. Deejay Saar has been missing, maybe on a break or is mixed in work i don't know, but Philip Saar was banned for bringing in Russian wares for everything. I am not sure if it was a temporary ban or permanent. but he has stopped posting after that.VickyAvinash wrote:Is anyone in touch with Deejay, Philips and Austin? Do liquid fuel missiles like scalp, jassm, brahmos have fuel tank filled in factory and ok for years or the tanks are filled and drained for each mission?
