Flow of Terrorist recruits Increasing - Washington Post

Where else but to TSP ?
U.S. and European counterterrorism officials say a rising number of Western recruits -- including Americans -- are traveling to Afghanistan and Pakistan to attend paramilitary training camps. The flow of recruits has continued unabated . . . Since January, at least 30 recruits from Germany have traveled to Pakistan for training, according to German security sources {already reported in this thread}. . . .German security services have been on high alert since last month, when groups affiliated with the Taliban and al-Qaeda issued several videos . . . The videos all featured German speakers who urged Muslims to travel to Afghanistan and Pakistan to join their cause. . . . Last week, German officials disclosed that a 10-member cell from Hamburg had left for Pakistan earlier this year. . . Other European countries are also struggling to keep their citizens from going to Pakistan for paramilitary training. . . . Meanwhile, three Belgians and a French citizen are facing trial in their respective home countries after they were arrested upon their return from Pakistani camps last year. The suspects deny they were part of a terrorist conspiracy or plotting attacks in Europe. But one defendant has admitted to French investigators that the group received explosives training while in Waziristan. Three other Belgian and French members of the alleged cell are still believed to be at large in Pakistan or Afghanistan. . .European security officials have warned for many years of the threat posed by homegrown radicals who have gone to Afghanistan and Pakistan to wage jihad. . . .In July, U.S. officials announced that they had apprehended Bryant Neal Vinas, 25, a resident of Long Island, N.Y., who has confessed to traveling to al-Qaeda camps in Pakistan and firing rockets at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan. . . . He has testified about his interaction with the six-member cell of recruits from Belgium and France. Vinas has also told the FBI that he spent time in Pakistan with another New York resident, whose identity and whereabouts are unknown. . . . But analysts said the camps, which offer basic lessons in homemade explosives and countersurveillance as well as weapons training, could easily relocate elsewhere in Pakistan

Freed scribe smashes US policy

Barry Rubin

Journalist David Rohde is no longer a prisoner of the Taliban, but Washington is still a captive of its foreign policy which ignores Pakistan’s sponsorship of terrorism

When reality breaks into the mainstream media it can be of earthquake intensity. Such is The New York Times article by David Rohde, a journalist held prisoner by the Taliban for over seven months and finally released.

Rohde’s conclusions aren’t of much comfort for the Obama Administration, or for those who are naïve about radical Islamists, or indeed for his fellow journalists. But his honest thinking out loud should affect their writings and policies.

During his captivity, Rohde writes: “I came to a simple realisation. After seven years of reporting in the region, I did not fully understand how extreme many of the Taliban had become. Before the kidnapping, I viewed the organisation as a form of ‘Al Qaeda lite,’ a religiously motivated movement primarily focused on controlling Afghanistan.”

But he came to understand from close observation as a prisoner: “I learned that the goal of the hard-line Taliban was far more ambitious... They wanted to create a fundamentalist Islamic emirate with Al Qaeda that spanned the Muslim world.

With some important differences — and minus al-Qaida (my preferred spelling) link, the same points apply to Hamas, Hizbullah, the Iraqi insurgents, and Iran’s regime. These are not moderate forces and won’t be persuaded to change. And with another step downward in intensity — they use tactics other than violence, for example — he is also describing the anti-Iran Muslim brotherhood groups, the Turkish regime (Islamism in one country), and a lot of the Islamists operating in Europe and America under “moderate” cover.

Then there’s Rohde’s second point: “I had written about the ties between Pakistan’s intelligence services and the Taliban while covering the region for The New York Times. I knew Pakistan turned a blind eye to many of their activities. But I was astonished by what I encountered firsthand: A Taliban mini-state that flourished openly and with impunity.”

Or, in other words (and as Indian analysts keep trying to explain to the West), large elements of the Pakistani regime, military, and intelligence are the Taliban’s best allies, as well as the sponsors of a variety of Islamist terrorist groups targeting India.

Yet it is that very country, Pakistan, that US policy wants to depend on to fight the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Washington ignores Pakistan’s sponsorship of terrorism, deep involvement in the dreadful Mumbai attack and other operations into India, and laziness in battling the Taliban and Al Qaeda. I am not saying that Pakistan never fights the Taliban but that it does so only when its own interests are at stake, which means preventing the group from taking too much territory within Pakistan itself.

This doesn’t mean that the Obama Administration should escalate or keep fighting directly in Afghanistan — I think that’s a bad idea — but has to wake up and deal with the realities of that area.

After all, when Rohde speaks of his illusions about the Taliban, he is describing the policy line being pursued by high-ranking US officials who have spoken of a moderate Taliban (like Hizbullah’s or Hamas’s fabled and mythical “political wings”) or even how the Taliban as a whole can be courted in order to fight better against Al Qaeda.

Rohde is no longer a prisoner of the Taliban, but Washington is still the prisoner of terrible ideas about foreign policy.

Not just TSP but LeT mentioned. The arrested man, an Arab, trained with LeT in TSP.
Tarek Mehanna, 27, of Sudbury, MA, was arrested and charged in federal court today with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists.

The complaint says that beginning in or around 2001 -- up until May 2008 -- Mehanna conspired with Ahmad Abousamra, and others to "provide material support and resources for use in carrying out a conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim or injure persons or damage property in a foreign country and extraterritorial homicide of a U.S. national."

More specifically, acting U.S. Attorney Michael K. Loucks said at a press conference this morning that Mehanna and his conspirators had allegedly conspired to shoot and kill one or two members of the executive branch of the U.S. government -- neither, Loucks said, is still a member of the executive branch, and "neither were in any danger at any time." The men also allegedly tried to fight and kill Americans overseas -- traveling to Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and Yemen -- and attempting to receive training from the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Toiba.

The men also tried to obtain weapons and discussed random shootings of Americans at a shopping mall -- an idea inspired by the D.C. sniper attacks, Loucks said -- because "civilians are taxpayers" and "non-believers." That plan was ultimately abandoned "because of their inability to obtain the automatic weapons they deemed necessary to effectively carry out the attacks," according to a Department of Justice release.

MP: Pakistan spy agencies support terrorists

Thu, 22 Oct 2009 03:10:36 GMT

An Iranian lawmaker says there are reports that Pakistan's intelligence agencies have supported the terrorists that carried out a recent terror attack in southeastern Iran.

Ali Aqazadeh, who was a member of a parliamentary delegation visiting Sistan-Balouchestan Province following the Sunday attack in Pishin, stated that officials in the province believe that bandits and terrorists in the province are supported by "Pakistan's intelligence services," Mehr news agency reported on Wednesday. ............................

"According to the Sistan-Balouchestan officials, terrorists are backed by Pakistan's intelligence services and some non-regional powers also support them," Mehr news agency quoted Aqazadeh as saying on Wednesday. ............................

In the days of Lord Curzon there had been a popular saying, 'lift a mullah's beard and you will find the Union Jack'.
Found this in a paper I read (American Anti-Colonialism and the Dissolution of the British Empire
William Roger Louis International Affairs (Royal Institute of International Affairs 1944-), Vol. 61, No. 3. (Summer, 1985), pp. 395-420.

However, its context and import is not clear. There was no suitable thread to post the question, so posted here - does anyone know more about this saying?

Subversive tactics employing mullahs to rebel against the ruling regime was a std tactic of the Colonial British and even today. Iran is a product of this policy.
No doubt the comparable point in American history was the loss of confidence
during the Vietnam war. Then too there was a division of national sentiment and a
question of national purpose. Yet in a sense the Suez crisis was a watershed for the
Americans as well as for the British because many of the world's problems today can be
directly traced to the policies pursued by the Eisenhower administration. Americans
might take pride in Eisenhower's robust anti-colonialist stance at the time of Suez, but,
as Michael Howard has written recently, there was a dark side td the Eisenhower era.('('
Eisenhower did not hesitate to employ the subversive capabilities of the Central
Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the holy war against communism, few holds barred. The
greater the frustrating restraint of nuclear weapons, the more tempting the use of
covert methods. Eisenhower used the CIA to help topple Mosaddeq in Iran (as well as
Arbenz in Guatemala). In the days of Lord Curzon there had been a popular saying,
'lift a mullah's beard and you will find the Union Jack'.
Eisenhower's policy of external
interference, pursued by his successors, almost certainly contributed to the later
Iranian revolution and led to the replacement of Britain by the United States as the
'great Satan'. The global reputation of the British Empire as a satanic force may have
ebbed, but the United States as a diabolical and ubiquitous influence is a popular
perception throughout much of the world today.
Much to his credit, Eisenhower stopped short of political assassination.

The US established “Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism”, released its Risk Report on October 21st.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan figures prominently in the report and is identified, along with Iran and North Korea as being part of the “Areas of Concern”.

Page 4 of the report had this to say:
Pakistan remains the geographic crossroads for terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
For good measure the same point is reiterated on page 27:
The country is at a geographic crossroads for terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
The complete report is available here:

For those not inclined to plough through the report, the Hindu carries a story by IANS on the report:

Concerned over our people being recruited by Taliban: Maldives

Sunday , Oct 25, 2009 at 1515 hrs

New Delhi:Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday said that some people from his country were being "radicalised" and recruited by the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan to fight the government and coalition forces.

"We have a serious issue with this radical Islam and we need to address that. We have a situation where our people are being recruited by groups in Pakistan and Afghanistan and as long as the recruitment drive goes on, it gets very difficult for us to bring the house in order," he said.

Nasheed, who is here on a visit, said students from his country going to Pakistan were being "radicalised" which is a "big problem".

"They have been, yes. I am saying that Maldivian people are being recruited by the Taliban and they are fighting in Pakistan. It is a serious issue," the President said.

More on Pakistan’s connection to terrorism in the Maldives from Jyoti Malhotra’s interview of Mohamed Nasheed, the President of the Maldives :
Q&A: Mohamed Nasheed, the President of the Maldives

Jyoti Malhotra / New Delhi October 25, 2009, 0:00 IST …………………….

Is it true that the Maldives has a serious issue with Islamic fundamentalists?

Yes, we have a serious issue with Islamist radicals, we know that many are being trained by the Al Qaeda in the northern reaches of Pakistan.

How do you know?

Because several Maldivians have been arrested by Pakistani authorities after they crossed into Pakistan from India. The recruitment of Islamist radicals takes place in the Maldives and their channel of movement is all the way up to Pakistan.

Are you saying that the Maldivians are being trained by the Al Qaeda in Pakistan, in Waziristan?

Yes, they are getting trained there by the Al Qaeda to fight the war in Afghanistan.

Iran insists on supprt of Pakistani secret service for Jondollah - interview

23 October 2009

BBC Monitoring Middle East

Text of interview with Asheq Hoseyn, the head of Pashtu Radio of IRIB's external services, entitled "Behind the scene of Rigi's gang", published by Iranian newspaper Jaam-e Jam on 20 October.

The name of Abdol-Malek Rigi and his criminal terrorist group became known after the ruthless violent killing of a number of our countrymen in Tasuki region, along Zahedan-Zabol road in 1384 [2005]. Since then the same criminal group, supported by America, threatens the security of the South Eastern part of the country every now and then by its terrorist operations.

In 1385 [2006], a group of IRGC [Islamic Republic Guard Corps] personnel were martyred by explosion of a bomb by the same terrorist group installed in pathway of their bus.

Explosion of a bomb in Ali-ebn Abitaleb Mosque just before the presidential elections killing more than 20 people, is another terrorist operation of this group.

Ever since the emergence of this terrorist group, there has always been some official and unofficial news about America supporting Abdol-Malek Rigi; his interviews with VOA can approve his connection with certain American authorities.

A day after the terrorist operation in Sistan and Baluchestan, commander Mohammad Ai Ja'fari, chief commander of IRGC said they received news which point to American, British and Pakistani secret services supporting Abdol-Malek Rigi.

In an interview with Jame-Jam, Asheq Hoseyn, the director of Pashtu radio section of the national radio and television explained the reasons for the above supports for this terrorist groups.

What do America and Britain gain from operations of terrorist groups like Taliban and Rigi?

You know that Al-Qaeda and Taliban have been created by secret services of Pakistan, Britain, America, Saudi Arabia and to some extent the UAE. In 1997 when Ms Binazir Buto, the prime minister of Pakistan, was in exile in Britain, she confessed in an interview that they had a role in the formation of Taliban phenomenon. She said: We were not alone in the formation of this phenomenon. In addition she said: We played the role of executives there. America and Britain planned the formation of this organisation and Saudi Arabia paid the expenses. However, America could not recognize Taliban because of its so called human rights claims, but the three other countries, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Pakistan did recognize Taliban's regime.

After the fall of Taliban's regime, Saudi Arabia and UAE continued their contacts with Taliban's leaders. Whenever there is a meeting between Taliban's leaders and American and British secret agents, it is held either in Saudi Arabia or UAE or Kuwaite in Pakistan.

Do you think supporting the terrorist group led by Abdol-Malek Rigi is in line with the same policy?

The above countries have reached the conclusion that semi-Taliban groups should be organised in other countries in central Asian region. They organised a terrorist group in Iran under the name of Jondollah, led by Abdol-Malek Rigi. Saudi Arabia provides the expenses, America and Britain devise its policies and Pakistan allows them to have a base in that country. At present the members of this terrorist group are stationed in Baluchestan province of Pakistan and their headquarters is in Karachi. Abdol-Malek Rigi is in contact with the international Mafia network and Pakistan secret service (ISI) supports and protects Rigi's group. By virtue of ISI support, its members easily move between Karachi, Saudi Arabia and Emirates.

Pakistan has always suffered great damages as the result of terrorist operations. How can we justify its supports for terrorist groups?

We have two governments in Pakistan; one is behind the curtain and one in front of it. The latter consists of the president, prime minister and other official Pakistani authorities whom we know; but they have no will of their own.

The main government functions behind the curtain and is in the hand of ISI and the army. They have a whole series of plans in mind. For example, extremist members of ISI with their extremist Vahabi and Salafi ideologies, are planning to form a large emirate-type rule in the region with participation of Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

You referred to the support of certain extremist members of Pakistani secret service for Rigi's terrorist group. Considering the fact that this group carries out its terrorist operations in Iran, what do the above members of Pakistan's army gain from it?

America and Britain pursue their own goal while the Pakistani extremists have another goal. The aim of America and Britain is to create insecurity in the region. Accordingly, we see how they have turned Iraq and Afghanistan into insecure countries and how they are provoking a civil war in Pakistan. In fact, the only secure and stable country of the region is Iran. That's what America and Britain can not bear. They seek to create insecurity inside Iran as well. This was the aim of formation of Jondollah terrorist group.

America and Britain are making Iran insecure in order to put pressure on Iran to yield to the demands of the West in other areas, including Palestine and the nuclear energy.

Pakistani extremist forces seek to make Iran follow their policies. Pakistan is very sensitive in regard to its relations with India and while it sees India as an enemy, it can not bear friendly relations between Iran and India.

Pakistan 'key' to UK terror plots

By Jonathan Beale
BBC News, Washington

A US report investigating links between Britain and Pakistan says that "a physical and ideological terrorism pipeline" exists between the countries.

The report, published by centre-right think tank The Heritage Foundation, argues that "Pakistan is central" to terrorist plots in Britain.

More than a quarter of those convicted of terrorism in the UK trained or tried to train in Pakistan or Afghanistan. ……………………

The authors, Ted Bromund and Morgan Roach, said the data they analysed showed that 19 out of the 87 individuals convicted of terrorism offences in Britain had family ties to Pakistan.

At least one was a Pakistani citizen, they say, and 61 were affiliated with al-Qaeda. ……………..

Mr Bromund and Mr Roach say that Britain and America "need to break the Pakistan-UK terrorism pipeline."

"Breaking that pipeline is just as important as, but far more difficult than, ending the flow of trained men from Pakistan into Britain." …………………
The referenced Heritage Foundation report titled “ Islamist Terrorist Plots in Great Britain: Uncovering the Global Network “ is available here:

The American was also planning to surveille or hit Indian targets, according to ToI report
"In July and August 2009, Headley exchanged a series of e-mails with LeT Member A, including an exchange in which Headley asked if the Denmark project was on hold, and whether a visit to India that LeT member A had asked him to undertake was for the purpose of surveilling targets for a new terrorist attack," the FBI said in its affidavit.

"These e-mails reflect that LeT Member A was placing a higher priority on using Headley to assist in planning a new attack in India than on completing the planned attack in Denmark," it said.
The Times report conveniently omits references to India because India is fair game.

The ToI report also says
It was not clear if it is a school run by the Pakistani military or if it is a terrorist training camp.

Six held over UN hostel attack: Afghan intelligence

Kabul, Oct 31 (AFP) Afghan authorities have arrested six people in connection with a deadly Taliban attack against a guesthouse for UN staff in the capital Kabul, the head of the national intelligence service said today.

"Six people have been arrested and we have handed them over to the judicial authorities," Amrullah Salih told a press conference in Kabul.

Salih said it had been confirmed that three suicide attackers who carried out the attack at the Bekhtar Guesthouse on Wednesday were from Pakistan.

"All three bombers were from the Swat Valley," he said, referring to an area in Pakistan that has a reputation as a hotbed of militancy.

Famed French judge Bruguiere tells of a troubled Pakistan

In a new book, former investigative magistrate Jean-Louis Bruguiere says Pakistan has lost control of rogue military and intelligence officers, who are aiding militants.

By Sebastian Rotella
November 4, 2009

Reporting from Washington - The Pakistani government has lost control of rogue military and intelligence officers who aid Al Qaeda and its allies and play a double game with the West, a renowned French judge asserts in an upcoming book. ……………………

The book details French investigations of extremist activity in Pakistan, including a case in which officials went as far as hiding militants from CIA inspection teams at a training camp run by the Pakistani military. Military handlers then sent the trainees on terrorist missions to the West, Bruguiere asserts. ………………………..

Islamic radicals seemed to benefit from "a certain sympathy, to say the least" within Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency, he writes, citing one of his cases. "We did not have the impression that our interlocutors considered [Al Qaeda militants] to be terrorists." …………………………

"The situation in Pakistan is among the most worrisome," he writes. "The central government has lost control of certain elements of the army and the ISI, an intelligence service that no longer has the trust of its foreign partners."

The judge cites his investigation of Willie Brigitte, a Frenchman who was convicted of terrorism charges in 2007.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, Al Qaeda militants helped Brigitte go to Pakistan to train with hundreds of Arabs and Westerners and several thousand Pakistanis and Afghans at a mountain complex in Punjab. Affiliated with Al Qaeda, the camp was run jointly by the Lashkar-e-Taiba extremist group and Pakistani security forces, which supplied arms and instructors, the book says.

CIA officers accompanied by Pakistani officials made four inspections of the camp, part of an agreement in which Pakistan had promised to prevent foreign militants from training with Lashkar, Bruguiere writes.

"But, since most of the officers of Lashkar belonged to the army, these inspections were doomed to draw a blank," the book says. "The foreign recruits were alerted on the eve of the arrival of the inspection teams by their instructors, military men informed by their hierarchy.

"The trainees then had to . . . erase any traces of their presence and head to an elevation of more than 13,000 feet while the inspection lasted." ……………….

Headley, Rana squeal on more terror plots?
6 Nov 2009, 1330 hrs IST
After exposing the Delhi 26/11-type terror plot to attack the National Defence College, the deadly Lashkar duo of David Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana have reportedly spilled the beans on many more such lethal assignments.

The Bangladesh police have arrested three suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) leaders from a madrassa in Chittagong in connection with a plot to attack the US embassy in Dhaka.

The men were held after interrogation of Headley and Rana in the US. Investigators also claim that they had caught the LeT men on information provided by ‘a US national’ and a ‘Pakistan-born US national. They were arrested in the US recently on charges of attempt to attack on the establishments including embassies of the US, UK and India in different countries.’
'Clear proof of Pak complicity'
6 Nov 2009, 1054 hrs IST

The Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday (November 6) nailed Pakistan’s complicity in the new 26/11-type plot that targeted Delhi, says he was aware of arrests made in Pakistan of members of the al-Qaeda’s ‘313 Brigade’. He said terror plotters David Headley and Tahawwur Rana who have been arrested in Chicago for conspiring to carry out attacks on Denmark and India, are connected to the terrorist arrested by Islamabad.
...
“There is an obvious Pakistan link – if you have read the FBI affidavit reproduced in the newspapers – Headley visited Pakistan a number of times. And I think on the advice of the FBI two or more people were arrested in Pakistan. So there is a Pakistan link, and I was informed about it, yes,” said the Home Minister today.
...
Pakistani media on Thursday (November 5) claimed that the Pakistan government had arrested the chief suspect behind the plot to attack the National Defence College in New Delhi, and added that it was this arrest that foiled the LeT plan.

This raised the question whether Pakistan had prior knowledge about the terror New Delhi terror plot and concealed this fact. The Home Minister’s statement today makes the Pakistan link to the Lashkar terror plot clear.

With the FBI affidavit submitted to the Illinois district court being available, fresh details are emerging about this new 26/11-like plot to target India.

Bangladesh police say Islamists target U.S. interests

Fri Nov 6, 2009 7:32am EST

DHAKA (Reuters) - Bangladesh police have arrested three Islamist militants, including a suspected activist of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, who were plotting to attack U.S. interests in the country, a senior police officer said on Friday.

"We have arrested the three from Chittagong port city as they were making plans to hit U.S. targets," the officer, who asked not to be identified, told reporters. Lashkar-e-Taiba is the group blamed for last year's assault on Mumbai.

The U.S. embassy declined to comment.

Earlier, home ministry officials said Bangladesh, a predominantly Muslim country of 150 million people, had stepped up security as intelligence reports suggested militants might target key politicians, officials and may be diplomats.

Last week unknown attackers bombed the car of a ruling party legislator, Fazle Noor Tapas. He escaped unhurt, but more than a dozen people were wounded.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told parliament on Thursday that Islamists who want to turn Bangladesh into a sharia-based Islamic state were out to thwart democracy and oust her government, which took charge in January.

"What they are up to? They are trying to scuttle democracy and push the country into chaos and violence," she said.

Police said on Friday they had detained dozens of hard-core militants across the country in the past week.

Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, chief of the elite Rapid Action Battalion, told reporters the militants were regrouping and planning to hit key targets but "we are fully ready to face the situation and frustrate their evil designs."

British spies help prevent al Qaeda-inspired attack on New York subway
British spies have foiled a terrorist plot by a suspected al Qaeda operative to blow up the New York subway.

Published: 1:00PM GMT 09 Nov 2009

Najibullah Zazi: Zazi, from Denver, Colorado, is understood to have been given instructions by a senior member of al Qaeda in Pakistan over the internet. Photo: PA
The plan, which reportedly would have been the biggest attack on America since 9/11, was uncovered after Scotland Yard intercepted an email.

The force alerted the FBI, who launched an operation which led to airport shuttle bus driver Najibullah Zazi, 24, being charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.

Pakistani war zone is aid nightmare

The Afghan is alleged to have been part of a group who used stolen credit cards to buy components for bombs including nail varnish remover.

The chemicals bought were similar to those used to make the 2005 London Tube and bus explosives which killed 52 people.

Zazi, from Denver, Colorado, is understood to have been given instructions by a senior member of al Qaeda in Pakistan over the internet.

US authorities allegedly found bomb-making instructions on his laptop and his fingerprints on batteries and measuring scales they seized.

A phone containing footage of New York's Grand Central Station, thought to have been made by him during a visit a week before his arrest, was also found along with explosive residue. Zazi was also said by informants to have attended a terrorist training camp in Pakistan.

The alleged plot was unmasked after an email address that was being monitored as part of the abortive Operation Pathway was suddenly reactivated.

Operation Pathway was investigating an alleged UK terrorist cell but went awry after the then Met Police counter-terrorism head Bob Quick was pictured walking into Downing Street displaying top secret documents.

Eleven Pakistani suspects were arrested immediately after the gaffe but later released without charge.

However, security staff continued to monitor the email address which eventually yielded results.

The British discovery also came at just the right time – the US had threatened to sever intelligence links over the release of Lockerbie bomber Al Megrahi.

A British security source told The Sun: "This was excellent work and highlights the fact we produce good information.

"(The US authorities) were delighted with the intelligence we gave them and believe it helped prevent a catastrophic attack."

The possibility of a link between Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the perpetrator of the Fort Hood terrorist attack and that epicenter of global terrorism, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is being examined per US legislator Pete Hoekstra:
Fort Hood suspect may have wired money to Pakistan

11:30 PM CST on Wednesday, November 11, 2009
By DAVE MICHAELS / The Dallas Morning News

WASHINGTON – Authorities have been examining whether Fort Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan wired money to Pakistan in recent months, an action that one senior lawmaker said would raise serious questions about Hasan's possible connections to Militant Islamic groups.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., said sources "outside of the [intelligence] community" learned about Hasan's possible connections to the Asian country, which faces a massive Islamist insurgency and is widely believed to be Osama bin Laden's hiding place.

Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, would not identify the sources. But he said "they are trying to follow up on it because they recognize that if there are communications – phone or money transfers with somebody in Pakistan – it just raises a whole other level of questions." ...................................

Another US legislator, besides Pete Hoekstra, on the possibility of a link between Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the perpetrator of the Fort Hood terrorist attack and that epicenter of global terrorism, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

This time the US legislator is Michael McCaul who is on the US House Homeland Security Committee's intelligence subcommittee :
Fort Hood shooting suspect sent money to Pakistan, Texas congressman says

12:14 AM CST on Friday, November 13, 2009
By DAVE MICHAELS and LEE HANCOCK / The Dallas Morning News

An Austin congressman said Thursday that he has confirmed that Fort Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan wired money to Pakistan, which Muslim extremist groups use as a base to raise funds and carry out terrorist attacks.

Rep. Michael McCaul's statement followed a Dallas Morning News report that authorities were looking into whether such wire transfers had occurred. It also came as Army officials announced charges of premeditated murder against Hasan, who could face the death penalty.

"I have confirmed through independent sources that there were communications and wire transfers made to Pakistan," McCaul said in a prepared statement provided by his spokesman. "This Pakistan connection just raises more red flags about this case and demonstrates why it's important for Congress to exercise its oversight authority."
The spokesman, Mike Rosen, said McCaul wouldn't name his sources. The congressman's statement didn't address who Hasan's contacts in Pakistan were, when he communicated with them or how much money he sent.

McCaul is the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee's intelligence subcommittee. He typically is briefed on classified material but had yet to be formally briefed on the Fort Hood killings. ……………………….

X Posted. French judge Jean-Louis Bruguière says that the US accepted the Pakistan Army running Lashkar terrorist training camps.

In dealing with the US, India needs to be cautiously alert else we will be sold down the river:
From Times Online

Pakistani Army ran Muslim extremist training camps, says anti-terrorist expert
Charles Bremner in Paris

The Pakistani Army ran training camps for a Muslim extremist group, at least until recently, with the acceptance of the US Central Intelligence Agency, according to France’s foremost anti-terrorist expert.

Jean-Louis Bruguière, who retired in 2007 after 15 years as chief investigating judge for counter-terrorism, reached this conclusion after interrogating a French militant who had been trained by Lashkar-e-Taiba and arrested in Australia in 2003.

In a book in his counter-terrorism years, Mr Bruguière says that Lashkar-e-Taiba, which was set up to fight India over disputed Kashmir territory, had become part of the international Islamic network of al-Qaeda.

Willy Brigitte, the suspect, told Mr Bruguière, that the Pakistani military were running the Lashkar-e-Taiba training camp where he spent 2½ months in 2001-02. Along with two Britons and two Americans, Brigitte was driven in a 4x4 through army roadblocks to the high-altitude camp where more than 2,000 men were being trained by Pakistani regular army officers, he said.

“The links between the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Pakistani Army are more than close. Brigitte observed this twice,” Mr Bruguière said. “When the camp was resupplied, all the materiel was dropped off by Pakistani army helicopters. And there were regular inspections by the Pakistani Army and the CIA.” ................................

Immediately after the 9/11 incidents, India shared with the US the locations of 120 terror training camps along with video footage in many instances. Many of those camps seemed to be run by Al Badr based on the insignias, slogans etc seen there. Now, Al Badr was the creation of ISI and very close to it too. The Al Badr cadres along with the PA took part in the genocide in the then East Pakistan. They were disbanded after that but resurrected in 1979 and fought in Afghanistan under Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hizb-e-Islami, another notorious ISI protege. Later, they were let loose on India in J&K.

Besides, Al Badr, the ISI also used the Libyan, Abu Farraj Al-Libbi, to train terrorists as he was supposed to be skillful in training terrorists. See Shehzad's article. Abu Farraj was later arrested from an LeT safehouse, but only in c. 2006, and extradited to the US.

Added later
What also bothers me is the following:
The US agency carried out spot checks to ensure that Pakistan was sticking to an agreement not to train any foreigners at the militant organisation, the judge said. . . . The judge said that it was possible that the Americans had been turning a blind eye to the organisation’s training of foreign operatives.
What did the US mean by 'not train foreigners' ? So training Pakistanis and Indians to attack India was all right then ? How can the US government even allow terrorist training camps and then do spot checks ? Disgusting to say the least.

Pakistan’s terrorist supporting ways spreads beyond the traditional support by way, among others, of providing manpower for global Sunni Islamic terrorism.

Yemen now claims that Pakistani are providing manpower for the terrorism by the Shia / Shiite Houthi’s in Northern Yemen:
Pakistani fighters support Houthis

15/11/2009
Sana'a, NewsYemen

Yemen's Houthi rebels have Pakistani fighters in their ranks, press reports revealed Sunday, as Saudi Arabia arrested a sorcerer on its border with Yemen attempting to plant magic spells in the conflict zone in support of the rebel group.

Pakistani fighters are helping the Houthi rebels with their conflict against Saudi Arabia, Al Arabiya TV reported, quoting Yemen's Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi as saying: "The way the Houthi militias operate and the amount of money they spend on the conflict make the involvement of foreign powers almost a certainty."

“The Yemeni intelligence is investigating the involvement of external parties in supporting the Houthi insurgency,” al-Qirbi said. “This is a conspiracy to destroy Yemen and the Houthis will pay dearly for that.” .............................

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan's terrorist friendly ways ................. Take retributive action against those who will disclose the truth  .

Global media watchdog Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) is reporting that two Pakistani journalists who assisted in getting background information for establishing the fact, despite Pakistani denials, that Ajmal Kasab, who is currently on trial for the Mumbai terrorist attack, was a Pakistani national, have been detained for “theft and fraud”.

RSF is in no doubt that the arrest of the two Journalists has more to do with the breaking of Ajmal Kasab’s Pakistani origin than anything else:
Two journalists held after helping media probe Mumbai attacker’s background

Published on 13 November 2009

Two Pakistani journalists, Rab Nawaz Joya and Javed Kanwal Chandor, have been held since 10 November in a police station in Okara district, in the northeastern province of Punjab. Although charged with theft and fraud, they were arrested for helping Pakistani and international news media get background information about Ajmal Kasab, a participant in the November 2008 terrorist attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai ……………………

“It is intolerable that two Pakistani journalists are being treated like criminals for helping to establish the truth about the only surviving member of the Mumbai attackers commando,” Reporters Without Borders said. “This information may have been embarrassing for the Pakistani authorities, but it is unacceptable that these two reporters are being held just for doing their duty as journalists.”

The press freedom organisation added: “The absurd charges brought against them fail to conceal the real motive for their arrest. We call for them to be freed without delay and for all the charges to be dropped.” …………………..

26/11 trial: Pak admits Fahim's passport is genuine, Indian Express, November 17 2009
Excerpts
Pakistan Government has admitted to India that the passport obtained by 26/11 accused Fahim Ansari in a fake name was genuine but issued on the strength of bogus documents given by him
According to the prosecution, a Pakistani passport was seized from Ansari at the time of his arrest in January 2008 in Lucknow. The details of this passport was sent to Pakistan to determine whether it was genuine.
Ansari is charged with drawing maps of certain targets in Mumbai and giving them to co-accused Sabauddin Ahmed, who in turn had allegedly passed them on to Lashkar-e-Taiba to carry out the attacks.
There are people in Indian mainstream media (Vir Sanghvi I clearly remember) who make light of Indian Police claims of finding id papers on arrested / slain terrorists. They should be more careful in future, write with a bit of humility, and not resort to cheaply pouring scorn.

Besides Ilyas Kashmiri, another ex-military officer who is said to have “recently left the Pakistani Army and held the rank of colonel or brigadier general” is reported by the NYT of being involved with the alleged terrorists of Pakistani origin, David Coleman Headley (aka Daood Gilani) and Tahawwur Hussain Rana who were arrested in Chicago.

Keeping in mind the “recently left” description, it will be interesting to see if any of the suspected conspiratorial interactions were undertaken during the individuals uniformed tenure:
Ex-Military Officer in Pakistan Is Linked to 2 Chicago Terrorism Suspects

By DAVID JOHNSTON and ERIC SCHMITT

WASHINGTON — The arrests last month of two Chicago men accused of planning an attack on a Danish newspaper have widened into a global terrorism inquiry that has led to arrests in Pakistan and implicated a former Pakistani military officer as a co-conspirator, government officials said Wednesday. ..........................

The case is one of the first criminal cases in which the federal authorities seem to have directly linked terrorism suspects in the United States to a former Pakistani military officer, though they have long suspected connections between extremists and many members of the Pakistani military. ...........................

The officials declined to name the other former military officer in the case, who is suspected as a co-conspirator. He is said to have recently left the Pakistani Army and held the rank of colonel or brigadier general, higher ranks than Mr. Kashmiri held. .......................

Pakistani origin Muslim cleric, Asif Farooqui, arrested in the UK.

While having yet another individual of Pakistani descent, even if a Muslim cleric, arrested for alleged terrorism, is pretty passe, there is something noteworthy in this case.

The point to particularly note is that the arrested Muslim cleric is identified as a Sufi of the Naqashbandia / Naqshbandi school going by the name of the mosque the muslim cleric preaches in.

How come Sufi Muslims are now allegedly involved in terrorism ?

If I recollect, Sufi Muslims have long been touted as the poster children for the slogan “Islam is the Religion of Peace” :

Arun, that association was a myth. No doubt that Sufis indulge in things that salafis will consider haraami, like music and dance for example among other things, but the Sufis can be equally jihadi and dangerous if need be.

The 17th century Naqshbandi Sufi theologian Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi (aka Mujaddid-alf-e-Thani) ensured that the ijtihad of Akbar did not allow the influence of Hinduism on Islam. His time coincided with that of Jehangir and Jehangir’s grandson, Aurangzeb was greatly influenced by Sirhindi. Many credit Sirhindi for having introduced communalism that led to the creation of Pakistan three centuries later. He reportedly praised cow-slaughter in India as a great Islamic act. Later his family members settled down in Afghanistan and have been singularly responsible for a lot of mayhem we are seeing there today.

Similarly, the 18th century saw another Sufi theologian, Shah Waliullah Dehelvi, who appeared at the time the Moghul empire was declining after the unpopular rule of Aurangzeb with the Hindus and the Sikhs revolting. He helped the Afghan King Ahmed Shah Abdali (Durrani) to fight the Mahrattas in the War of Panipat. He too belonged to the Naqshbandi sect. He felt that the decline of Islam was due to non-Islamic influences like those of the Hindus. He wanted an intensification of Aurangzeb's efforts. His thoughts led to the creation of the Berelvi sect. Sayyid Ahmed Berelvi was a disciple of Waliullah’s son, Shah Abdul Aziz. Berelvi declared jihad against the Sikh rulers.

Thanks Sridhar.

The Muslim cleric Asif Farooqui arrested for alleged terrorism seems to be following in the bigoted footsteps of his Naqshbandi Sufi predecessors.

So much for the tom-toming that Sufism, Naqshbandi or otherwise, could be the answer to abating Islamic terrorism.
