As far as the nuke sanctions, that was the LAW at the time. The US administration didn't have a choice. India knew exactly what would happen and decided (rightfully so) that it was worth the cost. The US also turned a blind eye to Pakistan purportedly getting nukes from China. No sanctions on China...

This is the motor that is going to propel the Zumwalt class destroyers. I think there is a mini version of this motor for submarines too.

How close did the USS Enterprise get to Indian territorial waters in 1971 to be construed as a threat?
