Col Ali Ahmed is a former classmate and friend. He has served in the RR and his father, MA Zaki was military advisor to the Governor of Kashmir. His uncle was the late Lt. Gen Jameel Mahmood. Would suggest criticism be directed at content. Nobody has said anything out of line yet but I know how temp...

Re: Indian Missiles and Munitions Discussion - June'14

Ramana, not entirely true. The radar network has to be organized appropriately. Radar numbers are a problem for India - even AD radars are in short supply. Being able to make LRTR is one thing, actually doing it is another and that is where things are not moving. Funding for BMD is still at experime...

"In the BMD project we track 0.1 sq m targets". Impressive but... Please look at this for RCS calculations with an interesting slide on RV RCS. They can go as low as 0.001 sqm from the front angle. http://aess.cs.unh.edu/Radar%202010%20PDFs/Radar%202009%20A_7%20Radar%20Cross%20Section%201....

KaranM. Let's just end this. You are relying entirely on press reports and dismissing anything that doesn't agree with your view. I am more cautious.

As to what I know and understand about DRDO's missile capabilities, I don't really think I need go into any detail there.

Re: Indian Missiles and Munitions Discussion - June'14

KaranM, data for RCS for RV and trying to simulate is not quite the same as actually doing a test on an RV. Critical thing about the Prithvi target - AFAIK the warhead does not separate. You are engaging the whole missile (subject to correction). The US and Israel have oodles of data as well but cho...

Re: Indian Missiles and Munitions Discussion - June'14

I will agree on the data issue. I have read all the articles you have cited and with respect, they do not quite address my concerns RV RCS and velocities are very difficult to simulate. The Prithvi has a low RCS but not as small as a missile RV. I'd suggest trying to obtain the air launched target s...

Re: Indian Missiles and Munitions Discussion - June'14

Two key areas that I do not think have been satisfactorily addressed by India: 1) A target capable of simulating an RV 2) A target discrimination system to filter out decoys. I know that there has been some work using a modified Prithvi as a target and there were reports of another target missile be...

Re: 1965 war India- Pakistan: 50 years anniversary

Ramana, WWRs of equipment in 1965 were not high. 106mm RCLs would not have been adequate in stock for the Mtn Divs as well. I think nobody thought enough of the swing role they would need to play. In 1971, their artillery was a problem too. 75/24 howitzers etc did not have the shell weight required.

Re: 1965 war India- Pakistan: 50 years anniversary

Yes Ramana, I knew about the swap out. Mtn Divs had 57mm RCL instead of 106mm RCL. However, when the swap was done, only 4 106mm were allocated per bn in 4 Mtn. The scale of issue I believe was usually 6 or 8. Correct me if I am wrong, we seem to have been in a state of flux with 0.303 rifles, MMGs ...

That's my point Shiv. We've looked at artillery, armour and aircraft but no discussion on infantry equipment. Re: 1965 war India- Pakistan: 50 years anniversary

It's from David Isby's "The Decisive Duel." The Blenheims would be put to use strafing ground targets when fitted with a gun pod. And they were only used until Beaufighters became available. You're right about their speed, though. On the very first mission (I think) four of six that were ...

Shiv, on the Mystere's I'll disagree there. The Israelis found them quite good against MiG-15 and MiG-17s as well as besting a Hunter on one occasion.

Still, I am only going by what I am reading and some proper feedback would be great. Every other point you raise is understood and well taken.

Ramana, I am seeing accounts of the Mystere but not the Ouragan per se. At least I can't find it. Reading Jagan's and Samir's book and BR, one really gets the impression the IAF took dispersal and ground defence of aircraft too lightly. To lose 37 aircraft on the ground is ridiculous. Re: 1965 war India- Pakistan: 50 years anniversary

May I put another perspective ? The Vampires were on their way out by 1962 when it was realised that they had been outclassed. The 1962 war however, ensured the need for additional combat squadrons so the Vampires were kept in service well beyond their intended dates in combat roles. Did the IA/IAF ...
