Re: The Cricket Thread
TFTA goras can also whine like the SDREs.
when the chips are down.
Axe must fall: no room for Clarke, Hilfenhaus and Johnson
Once the final day of this one-sided Ashes campaign is wrapped up by England, presumably this morning, seven long months await before an Australian Test line-up next takes the field. Much soul- searching lies ahead for a set-up thoroughly humiliated and in drastic need of an urgent re-think.
Howls that? Pup unleashes the raw cry of defeat
DESPAIR has descended upon Australian cricket. Embarrassment has become an acquaintance. Humiliation has introduced itself. Calamity has piled upon calamity. For the first time in its august history Australia could suffer three innings defeats in a series. And their opponents? England! Remember them? The pushovers!![]()
Can't bat, can't bowl, can't field and can't even think straight
Revolutions have broken out, palaces stormed and coups de grace mounted for less than this. Early this morning, Australia will lose by an innings for the third time this summer, which is unprecedented in a mostly proud cricketing history.
An embarrassment of historic proportions
THE worst Australian team ever fielded for an Ashes series will today watch England celebrate a 3-1 victory at the SCG in the knowledge they are the first side wearing baggy greens to have lost three Tests by more than an innings in a single series.
Clear the decks: Harvey wants Test cleanout
Forget the mid 1980s, Australian cricket faces its biggest rebuilding period since World Series Cricket, said the man whose job it was to repair the side after Kerry Packer's raid.
England completes stunning Ashes victory
12:44pm Australia were dismissed for 281 this morning as England celebrated an historic 3-1 series win, and for the first time in history Australia lost three matches in a series by more than an innings.

Guys, say what you want, but I watched the first 10 overs or so and then later on. The manner in which Gambhir and Sehwah handled the fiery pace, bounce, and swing of Morkel and Steyn under intemse pressure was commendable. They showed a lot of spunk. I am getting the faint feeling that Dhoni is turning out to be another larger than life, arrognat dada.
Not really because
It was Dravid and GG that handled Steyn and Morkel when they were going hammer and tongs at the Indian batters, give credit where it is due and Dravid deserves praise for the way he played yesterday, if you really watched the match yesterday you wouldnt have failed to notice that Sehwag actually scratched around without looking threatening and at the same time giving the impression that he would get out the next ball. Sehwag played a nothing innings yesterday and doesn't deserve any praise for it, certainly not at the expense of Dravid.
In fact while GG enhanced is reputation, Sehwag didn't do himself any favours by failing to match his test average

No because their fab 4 had 2 fab bowlersBade wrote:But this is their youngistan team no...without their fab4.
Mike Hussey has more or less replaced one of their Fab batters and Brad Haddin although not in the same class as Gilchrist does a pretty good job in the lower order. Watson and Katich are about 70% as good as Langer and Hayden.
The Aussies sorely miss Warne and McGrath and none of their current bowlers are half as good as Gillespie. India on the other hand never really had 2 great bowlers playing at the same time.

We have drawn a series in SA but we lose a point , however SA gains one point eventhough they played at home. Strange are the ways of ICC.

No, FIDE ratings are way different than ICC rankings.Rahul M wrote:^^^ it's similar to ELO ratings, the top ranked lose points in a draw with a lower ranked one.
You have mangus (the emperor
ICC rankings otoh penalize you with the most recent year getting the worst penalty and a window of three years used with a 1:1:2 weight. ICC ratings are more like iterated weighted average, while FIDE ratings are more like cumulated weighted average. It is easier to compensate for bad results by playing more in a cumulated setting, but not so in an iterated setting. FIDE Liveratings are there, but the official ratings are cumulated, and even then Liveratings work only by using the cumulation effect, not iterative effect. The galling aspect for ICC ratings is not the iterative part: it treats home series as the same as away series. The 1-1 draw at home compensates the 1-1 draw away. But that is just us. SL sits where it sits on top of home wins. They went to Oz, but only for ODIs, the WI series was washed out, so was a part of the series with us. Sure, we did nt travel much either last year. At least, we had SA, Oz, SL and NZ visit us. And we will compensate by traveling WI, Eng and Oz this year. Where are the SL heading this year? England and then what?
Re: The Cricket Thread
thanks stan. yes the home and away part needs to be incorporated but I wonder if it is possible to do it without yet another ad-hoc weight. I'm sure the boffins ICC consulted must have thought about it.
it's not easy IMO.

Re: The Cricket Thread
GG should be given his due - he has discipline and patience to build long innings and stick it out.
Re: The Cricket Thread
undoubtedly. IMO his elbow injury in first innings made him lose a tad bit of control which created errors.
it's not easy to produce those precise bat movements when your elbow is throbbing like anything.

The ICC consulted one person, David Kendix, an actuary. Hardly a scientist. Here is a guy who tells you about insurance and he becomes a statistician and designs the table for the pre-eminent championship?! If all actuaries became statisticians, what is the use for statistical training then? There is something called a trial or an experiment and two hypotheses to decide against, and a confidence interval associated with a decision you make. You can spin a weave around that and my math friends will run around with "where is the effing sigma alzebra, you sdre aanjaneyar?", but you see the point is made.
All this was done in the 2003+ phase, surely Kolmogorov is spinning in his grave like the dead remains of the Soyuz modules and beyond. Surely the ICC are not broke enough to pay N people, or throw a Netflix like competishun? I can take a stab if they paid the winner the summer salary eh. At least FIDE can claim that when the Arpad Elo-instituted scheme came about, it was the 60s and it stood the test of time till the people who beat the system by gaming it took over. The boffins must have thought, that is called philanthropy. You are attributing decency to strangers, which I must admit is brave, definitely not with exhibits in this august podium milord

Re: The Cricket Thread
^^wasn't there a scheme followed in rediff cricket columns (maybe still is) on differentiated weights for home and away. They would give both the ICC and their own ranking based on their scheme.
Re: The Cricket Thread
does Tendulkar needs a new bat? His bat is all padded and has seen better days.
Re: The Cricket Thread
he uses them till they can't be used anymore. repairs them as well as he can and doesn't use more than 2 match bats in a year. but he gets enough free bats that he donates them to local clubs in mumbai, keeping a handful for himself.

really? honest mistakes == steve bucknor's 12th man act?Now a question, which needs to be raised if we have to earn greater respect worldwide is why did the Indian Board not agree to the UDRS? In the Durban Test, the three LBW decisions that went against South Africa were so horrendous that even the naked eye could detect them.
Imagine, if India were at the receiving end and had lost, what kind of a reaction there would have been in the media? Just remember the Sydney Test, where umpiring errors had outraged us so much that we even threatened to withdraw from the tour. The reaction of the South African media, especially of their commentators on television, was very balanced and instead of harping on it, they put it in a cricketing perspective and carried on with the game, as it should be.

The series also left me wondering why is Kallis not being talked about in the same breath as Tendulkar?
