a newbie question: why does the drop tank taper towards the rear when it would seem that taper at the forward end would seem less draggy??
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Already asked and answered. How are you going to release the drop tankranjithnath wrote:a newbie question: why does the drop tank taper towards the rear when it would seem that taper at the forward end would seem less draggy??

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
during 2010 firepower demo, AN32 came in at night and dropped like 10 x 1000lb bombs...does anyone have photo of how this is done? was mentioned that sqdn practises for this role so they must have some permanent training pgm for this.
my theory is bombs are strapped to a parachute dragged sled and released out of the rear ramp using a small drogue parachute that pulls the sled out and no main chute deploys....but I could be wildly wrong.

^^^I can tell you how they did it in AN-12 - literally kicked the pallet out of the cargo bay, which slides over the roller on the floor of the cabin and out.

Old trick. Slide the cargo on the rails. It will free fall. If you drop at lower altitudes, then you can predict the trajectory. If from higher altitude = AoA.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Not AoA. You mean, InshaAllah!chackojoseph wrote:Old trick. Slide the cargo on the rails. It will free fall. If you drop at lower altitudes, then you can predict the trajectory. If from higher altitude = AoA.

In Afghan war, the Paki backed militants had same issue. They complained that IAF pilots are manning the planes.

I have a feeling they are not MARCOS. Just a VBSS team.

Cold as balls out there and none of these guys have any gloves on their hand, WHY? Are gloves not issued? or is it that they don't like wearing them?
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
In India people handling hot food don't wear gloves. Judging from the photos - it appears that these guys have just been transported from a kitchen and one is carrying a thermally insulated hot drink dispenser of a type commonly used in India. Another guy is carrying (on his head) what appears to be a large aluminium cooking vessel usually used to serve hot rice. These guys probably do not anticipate being out in the cold for more than a few minutes - and many people avoid gloves in such situations.Craig Alpert wrote:Cold as balls out there and none of these guys have any gloves on their hand, WHY? Incidentally one guy - carrying the insulated drink dispenser has a right hand glove and one guy is using his pockets.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military

A combo of two pictures made on January 24, 2011, shows a Indian soldier from the 1st section 'Les Aigles ' (the eagles) of the 2nd REG (engineering foreign regiment) serving as a soldier with the French Foreign Legion, at Forward Operating Base Tagab-Kutschbach, near Tagab in Kapisa Province, and a notebook with a sentence written by the soldier reading 'I love this army because it gave me a new life'. The French Foreign Legion, a military unit established in 1831, was created for foreign nationals of any nationlity wishing to serve in the French armed forces.
The writing is in Tamil. At the bottom its signed 1CL India.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Errr...wait a minute. In Tamil script it reads "Inthiya" instead of "India". Is that how it is supposed to be pronounced phonetically?

On arrival, he was received by the Air Cmde Jitendra Kumbhat, AOC, AF Station Jodhpur. A dinner was hosted in honour of the visiting dignitary by Air Marshal PK Mehra, AOC-in-C, HQ South-Western Air Command (SWAC).
During his visit, Air Vice Marshal Yahya Rasheed Al-Juma visited various Squadrons and saw facilities at the AF Station, Jodhpur.

Well 'Indhiya' is closer to how it is pronounced but that is how it is written in Tamil.asprinzl wrote:Errr...wait a minute. In Tamil script it reads "Inthiya" instead of "India". Is that how it is supposed to be pronounced phonetically?

Indian army soldiers get off from the first of the six, Lockheed Martin C-130 J-30 Super Hercules, to join the Indian Air Force fleet, during an inauguration ceremony at Hindan airbase near the Indian capital on February 5, 2011. Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony handed over the keys of the aircraft to the commanding officer Tejbir Singh, as Indian Air Force Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, US Ambassador to India, Timothy J. Roemer and Chief of staff of the US Air Force, General Norton A Schwartz, also attented the event.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^^ Minor nitpick: They are IAF Garuds, not IA soldiers.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
They don't look like Garuds to me, not by their demeanor, color scheme or equipment.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Well, a minor glance at their right arm should clear the issue. The red "special forces " tag on top right of their arms and the IAF eagle emblem below it shouldn't leave much space for doubt.
Anyways, this pic is of the day C-130J was inducted and closer pics of the same Garuds sitting inside the C130s ( the patches are clearer in those pics) must be floating around in this thread itself..

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^^Interesting. The column on the right have AKs and the left column have INSAS. I wonder what the basis of allocation is...
