B Raman blurted out in a column that (paraphrasing) "people should question Sonia Gandhi directly. She is not the British Monarch. She cannot pretend she has nothing to do with government decisions. WHy is everybody including the opposition afraid of questioning her?"

Sonia Gandhi can do no wrong.

That seems to be the basic assumption in the current debate on the various controversial decisions taken by the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh since it was formed after the elections of 2009.

These include decisions related to the questionable functioning of the ministry of telecommunications or the wrongful appointment of someone facing a probe to the post of the chief vigilance commissioner.

In all the debates in public -- whether in the media or by political parties -- the focus has been on the role of the prime minister, other concerned ministers and bureaucrats. I watched with interest the debate on various TV channels about the adverse judgment of a bench of the Supreme Court in the case regarding the procedure followed for the appointment of PJ Thomas as the chief vigilance commissioner.
The eminent people who participated in the debates, as well as the TV anchors, focussed only on the role of the various personalities in the government from the prime minister downwards.

Not one of them mentioned even in passing the possible role of Sonia Gandhi -- as the leader of Congress party -- in these controversial decisions. Even the spokespersons of opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, did not mention her name in their interventions.

Does this mean all these controversial decisions were taken only by the government, with the Congress leadership playing no role in it? Any objective analyst would find it difficult to accept this.

We have been subjected to a peculiar system of governance since 2004 where real power seems to be wielded by Sonia Gandhi in her capacity as the head of the Congress party.

There has been an unseen but unquestioned power which has been exercising a compulsive influence on decision-making in important matters. This compulsive influence is quite evident in the case of the appointment of the chief vigilance commissioner.

Whether in matters related to his appointment or the defence of his appointment before the Supreme Court, everyone from the prime minister downwards has been acting as if they were doing so at the instance of an invisible force that could not be resisted. Such an invisible force could be only that of Sonia Gandhi.

Everyone, including the media and even the opposition, has been behaving as if she is like the British monarch, above and beyond all controversies. Hence, she cannot be questioned about her role in them.

If one has to find out the real truth behind the recent controversies, it is as important to probe her role in them as it is to go into the role of others. The assumption that Sonia Gandhi can do no wrong has to be challenged by the public, the media and the political class.

It is important for the Joint Parliamentary Committee -- now being constituted to probe the 2G scam -- to summon her and question her in detail about the various controversies. It is equally important for her role in decision-making to be debated in Parliament, in the media and elsewhere. She should herself welcome a greater public focus on her role and influence in decision-making.

No, not really. If not, why not start that by himself or is he not part of the general public? It is a trap because anyone who questions along those lines can and will be dubbed by the media goons as hindutvavadis or internet hindus, who solely are incapable of accepting others. Thanks, but no thanks, no one wants to paint a bright target on themselves and help in shifting focus away from the issue.
This could be to help identifying who are in the sonia bashing camp and draw them out in open. OTOH he maybe suggesting that option to her to come out and welcome such a debate, because the stink has become so unbearable.
He is trying to extend the life-line to the dynasty.
Well, all the power to BR garu to fire the salvos, that he is fervently hoping public to take up cudgels against the die-nasty.

B.Raman, Subra Swamy, Ram Jetmalani belong to similar group. They are fickle minded and never consistent. Among the three B.Raman is slightly ok as long as he does not get into writing politics.

It will make very beleivable that they are playing to the galleries (or part of) some vested interests.

I always read their views with a tonne of salt.

The issue is not about challenging congress leader from dynasty. The larger question is turning of a fine nation into a banana republic.
A few years ago, someone wrote something against the leader on internet and was quickly rounded up by the police.
Not to mention arrest of the guy who exposed weakness of EVMs.
Quite recently, the "so called patriots (as dubbed by seculars) - tiranga yatris" were stealthily diverted from their destination by the railways without anybody batting an eyelid. Well if the "so called partiotic act" invited such a wrath, what would a real patriotic act as challenging someone could invite?

Spy satellites were deployed to know whereabouts of YSR when leader from dynasty wished for it. With such vast outreach of power and a propensity to gross misuse of public and government machinery; only heavens would know where it will be abused next.

Nobody would be lining up to take up the cause of someone who wishes to stick out their neck, which precisely what BR-man is trying to goad. Who knows which arm of the government is not compromised? A banana republic cannot expect to have general public to display courage on schizophernic basis. None of these worthies found anything bad, in such arbitrary transgressions and misuse of institutions on such occasions, because it didn't jive with their leanings. Even simple expression of freedom, rule of law and justice has been reduced to be dependent on one's political leanings.

Let nature take its course and eventually there will be natural justice (could be cosmic justice if public are lucky). Let public focus on people who are legally and publicly in positions of power that are answerable.

But with Manmohan Singh stepping down as prime minister after taking responsibility for the government's 'error' in pushing through PJ Thomas as central vigilance commissioner (CVC), moral equilibrium - not to mention my belief in the goodness of good Congressmen - has been restored.

It was always going to happen. UPA will just go for alliance with AIADMK now. They need to hurt DMK now as DMK had become very powerful over the last 8 years or so. Their clout was becoming too powerful. Elections are coming up in May. Shall be interesting.

The reason is simple. In UPA-2 , MMS went independent of SG in PMO appointments but she still has her moles.

Mupalla guru I was always of the opinion that PJT was SG's candidate and not MMS' and if that was the case then where is this case of independence of PMO arising ? Also anyone in parliament if they say they were not aware of the pending chargesheet against PJT they are lying through their teeth. I know for sure that appointment of an abdul scientist is vetted out by IB, he is technically on probation until the IB completes its verification, if that is the case with a scientist shouldnt a background check be run for aspirants to CVC?

I guess MMS is preparing grounds for resignation, the sooner he goes its the better for us Indians because
1. Despite all his economic prowess we had to still hit the slump and we still were able to get out, so he being there or not there doesnt make much difference
2. Talks with Pakis is totally uncalled for, incoming PM may it be Pranab, PC or AKA would be better than him
3. It makes life easier for the opposition because attacking a pranab/pc/aka is easier than attacking a mr.clean,oxford educated, economist PM(dont know if he is still a darling of the middle class)

Shri SH Kapadia should be given a bharat ratna to have done this and yeah the BSF's veerangna should be made to contest elections she will definitely win one seat

Beleive it or not, MMS is more of a US's candidate for India a.k.a Mubarak type. I am more convinced. It is true that he wanted to create his lineage with Monetek after his exit (read the rediff article that came few days ago). The biz lobbies are ripe with gaming and theorizing who is best for things like 125 fighter jet deals etc. The consensus among the chatter is that as Montek is impractical, Chidu is being projected as backup in the scheme of things. Pranab da is considered as someone with disdain and they hate to see him rising to highest level.

Yeah it seems like India is destined with another Harvard, Stanford type. Let's see if Bharat can fightback to get its own.

Why did the government go out of its way to appoint such a controversial individual to such a critical constitutional post? There are no clear answers although there are suggestions that this was linked to the can of worms opening up in the 2G spectrum. Thomas had been telecom secretary in 2009-10 when A. Raja headed the ministry. The obvious inference seems to be that the government was looking for a CVC who could cover up the corruption instead of exposing it.

In my opinion, INC's intention in TN is not getting more seats from the DMK it is more a smokescreen created to sever ties with the DMK. Through their surveys i think they have realised that DMK is a losing horse against ADMK+ DMDK combine so may be they want to occupy the high ground throw as much blame as possible on the DMK and whatever rest is remaining our MMS will take it up saying he made an error or he forgot. This way INC may be able to stave off the determined attack from the opposition by hanging the DMK and anyways MMS ji will go whenever he gets orders from 10 Janpath

The media has reported in passing that Swann was linked to agencies inimical to India. Who are these agencies. One is ISI (through Telenor) but even that is lesser threat when you look at the other stake holder, Huawei (it is alleged to have 16% stake in Swann). Huawei is a telecom company which "was founded by Ren Zhengfei, a former People's Liberation Army officer and a current Communist Party member" (1). The threat of espionage and sabotage by PLA using Huawei is so serious that the British Conservative Party stalled its attempt to buyout Marconi, a landmark electronics and information technology firm (1). The CEO of Huawei does not talk to journalist and its books are never made public. Why would any international company want to hide its balance sheet? Possibly to cover up the source of its funding which in Huawei's case is the People's Liberation Army of China. In the 2008 Annual Report to US Congress, the US Department of Defense had this to say about Huawei: "Information technology companies, including Huawei, Datang, and Zhongxing maintain close ties to PLA and collaborate on research and development." (2). If that raised your eyebrows what would you say when you read this comment published in The Times (3): "They (Intelligence Chiefs) have told ministers of their fears that equipment installed by Huawei, the Chinese telecoms giant, in BT’s new communications network could be used to halt critical services such as power, food and water supplies". The Australians have also expressed similar concerns about Huawei but A Raja and the string pullers at 10 Janpath did not see anything wrong in Huawei's stake in Swann Telecom. Were they unaware? No they were aware if you read the next section.

An anti-corruption rally was organised Feb 26 by eminent social leaders like Swami Agnivesh and Arvind Kehriwal under the aegis of Baba Ramdev demanding stringent laws against corruption and black money stashed in foreign banks.

The Lokpal Bill 2010, which awaits a select parliamentary committee's nod, creates an ombudsman body and also provides for filing complaints of corruption against the prime minister, ministers and MPs.

However, the activists say that the bill in its present form is toothless and that they have drafted a separate Jan Lokpal bill taking view and suggestions from civil society and common people in account.

The activists' bill demands that the Lokpal and Lokayukta, who will be the corruption watchdogs, be independent bodies unlike the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is under the government and can not function independently.

कोर्ट ने यह भी कहा कि हसन अली पर जिस तरह के आरोप हैं, वह राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा से जुड़ा मसला हो सकता है। इसलिए उसपर और गंभीर धाराओं के तहत केस क्यों नहीं चलाया जा सकता। मामले की अगली सुनवाई 18 मार्च को है, तब तक सरकार को इसका जवाब देना है।

I was not aware of corruption case against Thomas: PM

Singh told the Rajya Sabha that he was not aware of a charge sheet against Thomas till the meeting of selection committee on September 3 last year and that he gave his approval as he believed vigilance clearance would have been obtained as Thomas had earlier served as Kerala Chief Secretary and Secretary in the Central government.

Responding to clarifications sought by Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley and Left members after his suo motu statement, Singh said, "Until I went to the meeting of the committee, I was not aware there was any such case of Palmolein and that would involve corruption."

He said he became "aware of this case only when the honourable Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (Sushma Swaraj) raised the issue in the meeting itself."

So he doesn't read/watch news? I believe this chargesheet thing was all over in media before the selection committee meeting.

Explaining why he still gave his approval to Thomas' name, Singh said, "since the gentleman was appointed Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala and that he was appointed as Secretary to two departments of the government of India, I thought vigilance matters must have been looked into and therefore we went ahead with the selection process."

So even if the chargesheet thing was put before him in the file, you still would have appointed Thomas.

How many more hilariously lame (and sad at the same time) excuses Mr. PM.
