Pakistan's forex reserves fall to $17.50bn
So US is not supplying dowry on time??
Reserves were boosted in January by more than $633 million after the United States provided Pakistan with military and logistical support to fight the country's Islamist insurgency.

In March last year, an advertisement issued by the police force in Pakistan's Punjab province featured the logo of its counterpart in India's Punjab state.

In January last year, an Indian government advertisement pictured former Pakistan Air Force chief Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed alongside Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and cricketer Kapil Dev.

They want the public to make a big deal about it for a long term talking points. Otherwise Indians dont have anything else to talk about Pakistan except for IT

The ISI sponsored Paki news network says that Amb. Grossman told DG ISI Pasha to go suck a boiled egg through a straw.

This was in response to Pasha ordering Panetta to reveal all of CIA's assets and activities in Pakistan, before Rehman Dawood could be released.

CIA operatives in Pakistan US declines sharing details
http://www.onlinenews.com.pk/details.php?id=176128
According to well-placed sources, US Special Representative Marce Grossman came here on his first visit with negative answers to the questions Director General ISI Lt. Gen Ahmad Shujah Pasha had raised during last month telephonic contact with his American counterpart Director CIA Leon Panetta.

Thus hopes of the two countries getting back to the business as usual died down after the American envoy remained insisting upon unconditional and immediate release of Davis during his meetings with the civilian as well as military authorities in Islamabad during last couple of days.

“Instead of breaking the ice on the stalled and strained bilateral relations, Grossman during his whirlwind meetings in Islamabad rather renewed the American pre-condition of Davis’s release to resume normal interactions,” the sources said.

Rafia Zakia (whatever) wannabee seems to been have rebuffed by the 'Elite':

"The same effort put into the pretence of revelling in inherited wealth is also invested in the claiming of Arab, Persian or similarly exotic ancestry. Not being actually South Asian, then, is crucial to being good or privileged or socially viable, announcing to all that your presence in the current milieu is a fact not of your peasant origins but the conquering vigour of your ancestors.

Consequently, one victim of this self-hatred has been the languishing legacy of the Dravidian civilisations whose 1,000-year existence on the banks of the Indus has all but been eliminated, decried and devalued for its inability to establish itself as part of some lost ruling elite.

A DEEPENING MESS- Pakistan is again exploiting India’s eagerness for dialogue -Kanwal Sibal
...
Pakistan also commits fouls with impunity, but that does not deter us from going into the field with it. We also enter the game under threat of constant violence by our adversary. When we give such latitude to Pakistan and our own play is so defensive and permissive, how can we ever hope to win the game?

The reference to the “Thimphu spirit” suggests that we believe there is a positive spirit that animates Pakistan in playing this game. Why we persist in believing this despite the experience of the past is not easy to explain. We have had before other versions of a similar ‘spirit’ — the Lahore spirit, the Islamabad one, that of Havana, Ekaterinberg and Sharm-el-Sheikh, and New Delhi too, but, despite the rhetoric and expressions of hope, Pakistan’s game behaviour has continued to be unclean and malevolent.

We are the ones that make all the effort to create a positive environment before each round of play, despite Pakistan’s bid to vitiate the atmosphere. We say we have no choice but to play an honest game, however dishonest the other side is. Our bounden duty is to play the neighbourhood team, we say, despite its reputation of being unsporting. We exhibit our great keenness to enter the field, always assuming that the game will be played with positive intent on both sides. We are glad to offer to do the extra running to make the game exciting if the other side were to show some seriousness in playing straight. We are even willing to acknowledge for discussion some imaginary fouls the adversary charges us with, so long as play can be maintained. Our bottom line, of course, is that refusal to play the game, whatever the level of fraud and deception on the other side, is not an option.
...
Pakistan garners many advantages in responding to our overtures to resume play after periodic suspensions because of its misconduct. As the wooed party it makes demands with regard to playing conditions. Because our urge to play gets regenerated time and again, it feeds Pakistan’s conviction that its misdeeds will always get condoned eventually, and that whatever fouls it commits or rules it transgresses, the game will not be called off for too long. Indeed, the play will then resume from a new threshold of tolerance of its objectionable acts on India’s part. By being invited to play, Pakistan also gets acknowledged as a credible team, and India’s equal. When teams play, the cheerleaders are in the ring to make a noise. When the play stops they are disappointed and push for it to resume. India, as the supposedly stronger team, is then pressed to overlook fouls and violence and make the requisite gesture to the weaker side. And finally, Pakistan sees in every bout of play with an India that seems bereft of a winning playing strategy an improved chance of defeating its adversary — by scoring the goal it has long hoped for.

This is an elaborate metaphor for our diplomacy with Pakistan. We are once again engaging Pakistan in a dialogue, without learning salutary lessons from past dealings. When Pakistan resists our basic demands we gradually modify them under the cover of platitudinous references to compulsions of neighbourhood, of “no dialogue” not being an option, of a stable and prosperous Pakistan being in our interest and so on — and in this way the climbdown is sought to be concealed.
...
...
We seem to be buying the argument that even if Pakistan wanted to act on our demands it would not be able to do so in the current conditions of domestic terror and mounting extremist sentiment exemplified by the largely approving public reaction to Salman Taseer’s killing. As usual, we discover excuses for our adversary’s inaction in order to justify resiling from our own position. Suddenly, even Hafiz Saeed, the bogey man of yesterday is no longer worthy of serious notice. The venomous head of the terrorist organization, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the spiritual architect of Mumbai, who advocated a nuclear strike against India a day before the Thimphu meet, and who has close links with the Pakistani political and military establishment, is now dismissed as “inconsequential”. Because it is amply clear that the Pakistani government will not act against him, we feel obliged to change tack in order to clear the political decks for resuming the dialogue
...
...
Pakistan is exploiting the dialogue game to maul us as much as it can. Show it the yellow card and wait for its initiative to resume play if it wants to extract itself from its deepening mess.

...
A hard hitting true article, many points of which has been debated here on BRF. However, except the GOI, everyone else can see the absurdities of the GoI grovelling before pakistan for talks!!

@putnanja ^^^ Kanwal Sibal has bal*s unlike his bro Kapil. I still remember how Kanwal Sibal give Christina La Rocca the middle ungli at at DoS meeting during NDA time.

CL was seriously into the 'sisterhood' biz with Maleeha Lodhi and Shirin Tahir-Kheli (plus Robin Raphel) to put the screws to to India. She spoke to him like she would to Shaukat Aziz and he just exploded and told her where and how she could obtain instant personal gratification. After that, she was taken off the case.

His bro though "oozes charm from every pore as he oils way across the floor...". Dangerous sycophant to the max

Asif Haroon Raja is a retired Brigadier of the Army of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, a fact that is not mentioned in the article  .

So are these solely the views of Brig. (Retd) Asif Haroon Raja or is this an articulation of propaganda coming out of GHQ Rawalpindi ?:
America and not Pakistan is playing a dirty game

Within one year of its occupation of Afghanistan, the US instead of stabilizing the occupied country started nudging Pakistan to do more against foreign militants and those sheltering them in South Waziristan (SW). It then started accusing Pakistan of providing safe sanctuaries to anti-US militants and allowing cross border terrorism. To divide the premier institutions, the US charged that some elements within the Army and ISI were linked with Taliban.

The US and Karzai regime ignored other next door neighbors of Afghanistan with whom the US had not formed an alliance to fight war on terror. It forgot that Russia having suffered humiliation in Afghanistan because of US support wanted Afghanistan to become a graveyard for USA. Unlike Pakistan which is a coalition partner, Iran is hostile towards USA and desires its crushing defeat at the hands of Taliban. Pro-Taliban Islamic movement is raging in Uzbekistan and large numbers of Uzbeks are part of Taliban Army.

The main reason for overlooking all other players and singling out Pakistan is the secret plans hatched by USA in collaboration with India, Israel and Britain. ………………….

somebody had taken the pains a few years back to Debunked: Myths About Pakistan
This blog intends to educate the global audience about our country. We would like to debunk the stereotypes perpetuated against Pakistan. We extend a hand of friendship and understanding to all people who have been given a negative perception

[remove the 9 at the end of .com from the URL]

guess what, probably realized that the myth may actually be a reality - stopped trying in 2007 :D

Saar just prior to them seeking IMF load in 2008-2009ish it had fallen to less than $4 billion USD. Begging skills resulted in around 400% increase in their forex reserves.
By mid-October 2008 the foreign exchange reserves of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) had dropped to about three weeks of imports ($3.3 billion).
A sure-shot way out for all of pakistan's economic woes - write a book "A self-help guide to effective begging" - authored by people who are there & doing that

That is just half the picture. Starting from 2008 till 2011, Pakistani Rupee has lost 40% in value. That is despite 400% increase in Forex. If the forex had been built by baksheesh and exports, the exchange rate would have improved!! The exchange rate has dropped because Pakis have stopped importing (well, everything except oil). They have stopped importing because they have stopped exporting. So whatever they earn by remittances and baksheesh is safely in the bank! The only way to explain 40% drop in value of Pakistani rupee despite increase in Forex reserves is inflation -- which gels in nicely with the theory that their industries have stopped operation, but the currency printing presses have not.

Inflation (fueled by deficits) is what they are trying to control by getting baksheesh from IMF. The money they are getting is not to address balance of payment crisis (Like what India did many moons ago) to kickstart the import-export cycle, but to make sure that one roll of toilet paper does not become more costly than one roll of Pakistani rupee.

IAEA approves Safeguards Agreement for the new Chinese reactors at Chashma
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday gave its approval to a safeguards agreement for two new reactors that Pakistan said China was building for it at Chashma.

The ‘Type-66' agreement for the two reactors approved by the IAEA's 35-nation Board of Governors was identical to similar agreements already in place for Chashma-1 and Chashma-2. Though Tuesday's agreement was approved unanimously, the fact that not a single board member or regional grouping chose to make the usual customary reference to it in its remarks to the chair is being seen in diplomatic circles as a reflection of the disquiet that the Chinese initiative has caused internationally.

India is a member of the IAEA Board and gave its assent for the same reason the other members did — the agreement was of a standard type and there is nothing in the statute of the agency which prohibits the transfer of nuclear reactors to a country like Pakistan, which, like India, is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT). But China is a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and the rules of the cartel — many of whose 46 members also sit on the IAEA Board — expressly ban the sale of nuclear equipment to countries that are outside the NPT and do not place all their nuclear facilities under international supervision.

Stand-alone exemption

In 2008, China joined other NSG members in approving a stand-alone exemption from the cartel's guidelines for India. That approval — which came after more than three years of difficult negotiations among New Delhi, Washington and other nuclear players — was part of a package deal in which the Indian side undertook a number of disarmament, arms control and export control obligations.

Though Beijing is known to have shared nuclear technology with Islamabad in the past — including the know-how and components for nuclear weapons — those transfers pre-dated its own membership of the NPT and the NSG and were not prohibited as such.

The latest safeguards agreement, however, is the first formal indication by China that it is willing to disregard its international obligations on nuclear matters — in this instance, its commitment to abide by NSG guidelines — when it comes to Pakistan.

Ever since word of Chashma-3 and 4 first surfaced in 2009, Beijing had refused to confirm or deny the intended transfer. With the ground-breaking over and concrete for the new reactors being poured, the subject was raised by a number of countries at the NSG plenary meeting in Christchurch last year. There, according to diplomatic sources, China parried all questions on the transfer by reiterating that its nuclear cooperation with Pakistan would be subject to IAEA safeguards.

Although the NSG guidelines allow countries to finish nuclear projects that are already in the pipeline at the time they join the cartel, Chashma-3 and 4 do not meet that criteria. Indeed, when it was admitted to the NSG at the Goteberg plenary in May 2004, China only spoke of Chashma-2 as “ongoing supply.”

The NSG will meet again in the Netherlands later this year where the Chashma transfers will likely be brought up again. But with China refusing to budge, the United States and other leading members of the suppliers club will have little option but to ignore this violation of their guidelines.

I wondered why pak is not spending their $$. This is the answer...
if there is nothing else to do in a country with numerous government failures, poverty trap and institutional traps, there is at least a chance to provide an efficient "big push" to economic development via accumulation of reserves by a central bank. Even the most inefficient and corrupt governments can use the reserves accumulation as the last resort device to promote growth.

So how about NSG throwing out China from the grouping. That would mean all countries which are members of the NSG, like Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan halt their uranium exports to China.

Either NSG does so, or its reputation is finished! It is dead! As China starts unraveling the whole nuclear non-proliferation system.

he blast took place in the city’s Adezai area during funeral prayers.
So there was this one abdul who was supposed to be going to Jannat. Only Allah (and the soosai ghazi) knew that he would be having more company. So, a supposed funeral turns out to be a Baraat to Jannat.

Insha'llah, Baratiyo ka swagat 72 houris se hi hoga.

Edit:- Score now is 25
More casualties are feared as around 150 people belonging to the peace militia were present at the site.
A century is long overdue.

Most of those killed in drone attacks were terrorists: military
In a rather rare move, the Pakistan military for the first time gave the official version of US drone attacks in the tribal region and said that most of those killed were hardcore Al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists and a fairly large number of them were of foreign origin.
What gives? Paki army says majority are terrorists!

That is just half the picture. Starting from 2008 till 2011, Pakistani Rupee has lost 40% in value. That is despite 400% increase in Forex.
The financial meltdown also played a significant contribution towards that devaluation. Most currencies lost 20-40% against USD.

Pakistan to acquire six submarines from China
Pakistan has decided to acquire six Air Independent Propulsion conventional submarines from China to be fully capable to operate in a multi-threat environment under tropical conditions and launching torpedoes and missiles, reveal official documents exclusively available with Business Recorder.

NHQ has now forwarded a mutually agreed draft protocol to be signed between PN and CSOC as a first step towards joint development of conventional submarines ie AIP on JF 17 Thunder aircraft model. The proposed commercial deal between the two countries on conventional submarines, a copy of which is available with this scribe, is as follows: PN intends to acquire conventional AIP fixed submarines from CSOC as per agreed speculations, through joint development and co-production.

Under this protocol, submarines will be constructed at CSOC's yard and in Pakistan as per agreed arrangements. Co-development and production shall include joint development, training of PN/ Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) personnel, up-gradation of PN's yard and other related aspects including maintenance ie ILS as per respective responsibilities of the parties as defined in the protocol.

Murder They Wrote: Banners by Religious Groups Incite Violence: Newsline Magazine [Change qaum to com]

Image
Across Karachi are banners asking for Tehmina Durrani to be hanged.

Who has issued this call? Yet another ‘tehreek.’ This time it is one that calls itself the Tehreek-Tahafuz-e-Tableegh-e-Islam.

It takes offence to “a book written by Tehmina Durrani” in which she has allegedly slandered God’s Auliyas and Ulemas. The obvious reference seems to be to her book, Blasphemy, which deals with the exploitation of women at the hands of pirs – a certain pir and the way the supposed religious figure victimises the women of his household and community.
Tehmina Durrani is the wife of Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif! They married in 2003. The book "Blasphemy" is from 1998.
