[11:04 a.m. ET, 6:04 p.m. in Libya] The French air force is opposing any aggression by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi against the population of rebel-held Benghazi, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Saturday. "As of now, our aircraft are preventing planes from attacking the town," Sarkozy said. "Our French aircraft are ready to intervene against tanks."

CNN - the plane which fell in flames today could be libyanAF or rebel plane but either way a mica missile could be the cause. if rebel could be lack of IFF and confusion.

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- French fighters jets soared over Libya on Saturday to counter Moammar Gadhafi's military forces who were intent on destroying the opposition as they pushed into the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

"Our air force will oppose any aggression by Colonel Gadhafi against the population of Benghazi," said French President Nicolas Sarkozy, speaking after an international, top-level meeting in Paris over the Libyan crisis.

"As of now, our aircraft are preventing planes from attacking the town," he said. "As of now, our aircraft are prepared to intervene against tanks."

The international show of force is much-welcomed by beseiged rebel forces who have called for backup to help them stave off a government offensive against their positions in Benghazi and other rebel-held enclaves.

militaryphotos.net forum:

The greek gov decided to deploy 4 F-16C/D Block 52M, 1 ΕΜΡ-145Η Εrieye AEW&C with full Link 16 interoperability with NATO aircraft and 2 AS.332 Super Puma for CSAR. The mission is strictly for enforcing the NFZ, plus keeping 2 Hellenic Navy frigates near the area of operations at all times

--

a france govt official on anonymity said both mirage and rafale planes were over benghazi area. my increasing suspicion was the rebel plane got shot down in error since we had never heard of the rebels having any planes.

italy (berloscuni) has released all its tornado versions for action. their heavy bombload and endurance + proven and mature systems should be useful.

Merkel said on TV germany will not participate in military ops - a pity because they had good EF and tornado kit.

CDG carrier expected to leave port of toulon tomorrow morning.

you can pressurize the libyan government to talk to rebels instead of killing them but you should not attack them, i don't know, after making conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan like hell these people didn't learn. Not only they will earn international critics, but also unpopularity.

Recently, Gadaffi wrote to America and European countries including france and Uk and called Obama his son, he said even if obama attacks him he will still remain his son. Gadaffi is saying that most of the rebels (not all) are actually alqaeda members, if he is claiming that, we should look into it. During the time when most of the countries are struggling to come back on track after recession period, how can they think of another war?

Nations Oppose Military Intervention in Libya
In the above articles there is a big list of what nations are supporting and what nations are opposing any military intervention, i am just listing down some important:

US, UK and France are in favour military intervention. Italy is supporting a no-flying zone in Libya as UN has also declared it. Groups like NATO and Arab League also supports no-flying zone immediately. Canada, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Qatar, UAE, Spain have expressed their desire to help NATO and UN for any military intervention, whereas Poland and Lithuania will only support by providing humanitarian aid and evacuation of Libyan people.

Whereas Syria, Algeria, Belarus and Zimbabwe are supporting gaddafi government and have helped militarily as well has by providing arms and merecenaries

the mil campaign may just about save the rebels in benghazi if they can locate and bomb the govt forces still outside the city and cut off contact with those units which have already penetrated inside the city.

once the shaft is damaged and the airforces start chasing the govt down the coastal highway, those islanded in benghazi will either surrender or be taken out by rebel forces using RPGs from close range.

I think French AF is providing air support to rebels.Sarkozy was talking about action against Gaddafi's tanks if they fire against Bengazi.

So far all the military activity over Libya is French. The AP has the US angle.

Two U.S. officials say American ships and aircraft are poised for military action against Libya, but they aren't participating in the initial French air missions over the North African nation.

One U.S. official says the Navy is planning a sea-launched missile attack from the Mediterranean against elements of Libya's coastal air defenses.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of military operations.

One official says the U.S. intends to limit its involvement — at least in the initial stages — to helping protect French and other air missions by taking out Libyan air defenses.

The official says that depending on how Libyan forces respond, the U.S. could launch additional attacks in support of allied forces.

"For now, we have provided our military bases to the coalition, we will see later whether to participate in the raid", Silvio must give cautiuos declarations for political reasons

RahulM, Why the move? The reason for NFZ thread being in strat forum is its a political issue in the end and hardly technical. I had suggested to GD to start the thread to let the West Asia thread look at big picture.

Talking about the first shot by a French aircraft on a Libyan military vehicle, French defence ministry spokesman Laurent Teisseire told reporters: "A first target was engaged and destroyed." An armed forces spokesman told the same briefing the operation to halt Colonel Gaddafi's advance on rebel forces involved around 20 planes and an area 100 km by 150 km (60 by 100 miles) around the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi. France's Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier will leave France for Libya on Sunday, the spokesman added. A central command centre for the operation was still being set up.

Did we follow Parakram in Military thread? Or Iraq or any other fracas? And the planes that are flyinng hardly have any opposition from Libyan rag tag air force. So there will hardly be any new capability revealed.

and all reports so far are poltical in nature.

but good lessons to learn in how to organize all these disparate multi national units over a wide area into a single expeditionary battle plan...relatively quickly...

its not like anyone had the benefit of familiarization flying over libya before this happened...unlike fighting a border war on our own territory.

there must be CSAR units on egypt border for downed flyer recovery by now, as also on MEU ships in the west.

few spanish F-18 reported to have arrived in Italy.

looks like due to interoperable comms, weapons, procedures and datalinks, these little bands from every nato country can somehow operate together without much issues.

parakaram - if a shot was fired we would have followed here - it was followed in multiple threads depending on aspects

rag tag or not - there is still the aspect of seeing how operational the MRCA contenders are

considering the pathetic levels of english many speak - its a wonder this band operates together

France fires on Libyan military vehicle

A French official says a French fighter jet has fired on a Libyan military vehicle, in a first reported strike in the international campaign to enforce a no-fly zone.

French defense ministry spokesman Thierry Burkhard says the strike was reported around 1645 GMT on Saturday. Burkhard says the target was confirmed as a military vehicle, but it was not clear what kind.
