The 443 km (275 miles) long highway was opened by Indian army authorities for traffic after remaining snowbound at Zojila Pass, 3,530 metres (11,581 feet) above sea level, for the past six months. The pass connects Kashmir with the Buddhist-dominated Ladakh region, a famous tourist destination among foreign tourists for its monasteries, landscapes and mountains.AFP PHOTO/Tauseef MUSTAFA (Photo credit should read TAUSEEF MUSTAFA/AFP/Getty Images)

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Brings back memories. I attended one of these in the early 70s (possibly 1974) in Mumbai and stole the flag from an Admiral's car (the little one in the front of the bonnet). I kept it with me until recently when I gave it to a retired admiral.chackojoseph wrote:You saw this? Indian Navy Ball and the Navy Queen Pageant 2010 Pictures
As an aside - why do they call them "runner up". Should be stunner up no?

True. Some folks can be seen sleeping outside Churchgate Station and VT station after the ball. The first morning train is at 3 or 4 AM. When I used to work for a company, my colleague shot some pics and circulated.

In the Pamba picture, is the guy second from right a Marcos officer in whites? If so, this is the first pic I've seen of a Marcos officer in this uniform...

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^ Are you saying so because he has a beard ? IN unlike the IA has no strict regulations with regards to sporting a beard.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^ Negi: The person with the beard is wearing a cap, not a beret. Menon Saar is referring to the officer at the extreme right in the black beret.
JE Menon: I remember seeing the first MARCOS officer - forget his name - in his full ceremonial white uniform coming to get a medal from President R Venkataraman (i think) for ops in Sri Lanka against the LTTE. This officer went to the US for SEAL training and topped the course as well.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^ I see but even in that case the Commander in question is in No. 8A so he can wear a peak cap or a beret.
Looks like he has both the CNC's as well as the CNS's commendations (the black and gold tags on his pocket).

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^^^Menon and Rakesh - the two officers, one with the beard and other in beret, will both have to be from the same arm/specialization; the badge on their left breast pocket is same. So, I don't think the beret/peak cap is a qualifier. That aside, I don't know how many people are aware or have seen the distinct MARCOS Badge - an eagle clutching a horizontal dagger (more like a sword, actually) with anchor in the background . The badge on those gentlemen is a bit to figure out even at higher resolution but I doubt they are MARCOS.
Please see the link to pic below and the badge on the RIGHT breast pocket of the gentlemen - that is what I'm talking about:

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^ Yeah as it is a MARCO will always have a diver's badge above his left breast pocket which is missing in previous pics.
Rohit the badge in Chacko's pic is the Surface (Aviation one is also similar) specialization badge for sailors it is silver/chrome and for officers it is golden.

Also, notice the SDRE-ness of the SEAL course topper. Am sure people wont even cast a second glance at him in a crowd, forget about guessing him being a SEAL/MARCO...kudos to commander Arun.

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers patrol on foot at Tent Post-1175 near the Indo-Pak international border as they patrol the marshy regions, some 570 kms from state capital Ahmedabad on May 19, 2011. One of the 61 pirates captured by the Indian navy is brought to a police station in Mumbai, India, Wednesday, March 16, 2011. The Indian navy says it has placed 61 suspected pirates in police custody in Mumbai after capturing them this week in the Arabian Sea. Piracy has long plagued the shipping industry off East Africa, but violence has escalated in recent months. (AP Photo) INDIA OUT.

^^^See the badge on the right breast pocket of the fellow holding the pirate (in the vehicle) in the last snap above? That is the MARCOS Badge....I guess, these are the most 'open' snaps of MARCOS in public domain.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Oh I know...I was just pointing out to negi who Menon Saar was referring to. Excellent pictures by the way Boss.rohitvats wrote:^^^Menon and Rakesh - the two officers, one with the beard and other in beret, will both have to be from the same arm/specialization; the badge on their left breast pocket is same. Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Thanks for the clarification guys. Meanwhile, what do they mean by SEAL course "topper"? That he came 1st in some sort of ranking system? If so, this is the second time I've heard of an Indian guy "topping" a SEAL course. It will be good to know more, or if it is just DDM getting carried away, which is also possible. But that is OT for this thread I guess.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Is that a noise suppressor attached to the last Insas?
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Those are first pics of Hagglunds BV206 in Indian service that I've seen....good to see indian forces getting specialized equipment. That aside, does not BSF (or is it CG) use hovercraft in these marshy areas?
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Rohit
Dberwal had mentioned another similar vehicle with IA service

Yes, the BSF had bought hovercraft, but I remember reading a report which said that those hovercraft were not suitable for the job, since the area was too marshy

^^ Atreyaji,
The report i had read suggested that the hovercrafts and the ATV's were modified slightly to suit the needs and were to be put in operation by 2009 year end...

Rohit, see the picture above where there are two navy men (one old and one young) and another Camo dressed guy holding a Pirate, here this guy has a black patch over his Marcos Patch, Probably in the other one, the black piece fell off...rohitvats wrote:^^^See the badge on the right breast pocket of the fellow holding the pirate (in the vehicle) in the last snap above?
