Hizbul Mujahideen divisional commander among 2 ultras killed in J&K
Wonder why he decided to seal his warrant with his 72( courtesy IA) by going back to the pigs in 2007...would have been left alone otherwise..The security forces launched an assault on the militants shortly after dawn and killed both the ultras, who were later identified as self-styled divisional commander Muzaffar Ahmad Malla alias "Chota Moulvi" and his associate Suhail Khan alias "Shahid", the spokesman said.
Malla, who had received arms training in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, was one of the most wanted militants in south Kashmir.
He had joined militancy in early 1990 and was arrested in 2007. After his release, he rejoined militant ranks and was appointed Divisional Commander for south Kashmir following the killing of Sajjad Dar earlier this year.

And this is one CM publicly commenting on a elected state govt by accusing them of being "communal" just based on some news reports!!Omar said on twitter, “Disgraceful: Hindutva groups campaign to keep Kashmiri students out of Madhya Pradesh”.

The view of the other( read communal) side:

The change has reportedly come about after demands from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
“Look, out of 400 post-graduate students at Bhopal's Barkatullah University, 175 are from the Kashmir valley. The benefits entitled to Kashmiri displaced are being received by students from the valley,” ABVP general secretary B.D. Sharma told The Hindu.
“These students get mass admissions based on fake documents through the admission mafia and do all kinds of weird activities on the campus creating an atmosphere of insecurity among other students. They have even built a mosque on the campus premises. The situation is true of almost all universities of Madhya Pradesh,” Mr. Sharma said. “It is not our demand, but that of troubled students from all over Madhya Pradesh,” he added.

Indian army's Havaldar Rafiq Malik first Kashmiri to climb peak above 8,000 m:
Hailing from a village near Anantnag district, about 60 km south of Srinagar, Malik was determined to do "something big" for which he had joined the Army in 1995, following in the steps of his father and uncles. "As the trend was in those days, many of my classmates at our school in Khanabal joined ranks with the terrorists, who used to frequently visit our school to take us across the Line of Control (LoC) to pick up arms," Malik said. "My decision to join the Army remained a secret for over a-year-and-a-half and people in my village came to know about it only when Government officials reached there for verifying my credentials."
Soon after completing his training, Malik realised his love for mountains and did a course from the elite High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg and then from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling, where he stood first in all courses. The first major peak that he conquered was Mount Nun in Ladakh region in 2007. Rafiq then took part in operations at Mount Chaukhamabha, where they had to rescue some trapped army mountaineers. His big moment came when he was selected for Indian Army’s Manaslu expedition in Nepal in 2010. Mount Manaslu is the world’s eighth highest peak.
"A number of people from the State belonging to the Ladakh region have achieved this feat but Rafiq, a Havaldar in the 15 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry regiment, is the first Kashmiri to do so," said Colonel Ajay Kothiyal, who lead the expedition team.

Terror strike in Sopore, 9 policemen injured
Big attack this...expect the pigs behind this to be ruthlessly hunted down within a weekA senior police officer said terrorists initially fired two rifle grenades towards the Sopore station, which exploded without causing any damage in the backyard of the police station building.
"Immediately after the blasts, a group of policemen went outside to locate the place where from the grenades had been fired. Terrorists triggered a pre-planted improvised explosive device they had kept inside a parked scooter when the policemen neared it," the officer said.
"Nine policemen were injured in the blast, five of whom with critical injuries were referred to Srinagar [ Images ] by attending doctors at Sopore," he added.
The area was immediately surrounded for searches. Authorities also rushed reinforcements to the area.

Aha! From the mind of a delusional paki. There's always that urge to do an equal equal everywhere even if there is no logic to it (for a paki; logic - what's that?). Comrade, thanks for bringing in some happiness, in other wise a very irritating day. Holi (or for that matter) any other festival is celebrated for a day (or two at the maximum). My question. Was the praying done using the existing facilities of the college (for example the play ground) ? Or was a special room, building used for that purpose? Does any other religion/social group demand such things?ajit_tr wrote:If ABV feels insecure from kashmiri student praying on campus then one should be wondering how much insecure other religion people feel when they celebrate holi etc on campus.
To put it quite bluntly. We had the same problem in our company. Practically every men's room would get inundated with water after the "faithful" wash their feets etc. This was stopped by clearly sending out a circular that worship of any form was not allowed in the campus. Celebrating festivals (but not Holi) is allowed. Holi is not allowed because of people throwing colours on others who do not wish to celebrate it.

But we do have many many Indians who think in similar terms. Holi, Diwali, Christmas are celebrated with some gusto in India. Indians have pretty much secularized these celebrations. Most families i know say the following prayer in Diwali. Now what is wrong of offensive here. Anyone could actually do this prayer. Why should dispelling darkness be a cause for offence or ==. But i will will feel offended when some one says if you don't worship X you go to hell. The below is not offensive.
We contemplate the glory of Light illuminating the three worlds: gross, subtle, and causal.

We pray for the divine light to illumine our minds.

Srinagar: In the end, a group of students got past a 'Music is haraam' edict to stage a successful charity concert in front of hundreds of young Kashmiris at the SKIIC auditorium on Tuesday. And what normally would have been a political non-event of sorts gave rare insights into the gradual radicalisation of institutions and individuals in Kashmir.
Re: J&K News and Discussion-2011
From the same event...
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/indi ... 156314.cms
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/indi ... 156314.cms
also from http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/indi ... 162378.cmsWith days to go, the show was cancelled. Why? Because a section of students protested. "Music is haraam," they said, and un-Islamic.
The visible platform for these protests was Facebook. Hundreds of posts abused and threatened the organizers. "If music shows are OK, then what's wrong with prostitution?" said one. "It's our farz to stop these acts. They corrupt our society," said another.
In no time, an entire Facebook page against the show came up. These rants seem to have had a direct impact. According to sources, the organizers were summoned before the director of the management school and forced to write an application cancelling the event. "Let's not be outlaws,'' he is reported to have told the organizers.
The word spread like wildfire throughout Srinagar, and yet not a single newspaper reported it. They didn't want to be outlaws either. The harried organizers met the police and finally the music show shifted to a government-run convention centre.
This is not an isolated incident about a small music show; this is the culmination of a campaign that's picked up speed in the past few months. The man leading it, as always, is the guardian of Kashmir's morality, Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
For two months now, Geelani has spoken publicly about how corrupt Kashmir has become. His pet peeves are mobile phones, co-ed schools and western culture. Mobile phones make "Kashmiri girls dishonorable. If parents have any shame, they should throw the phones into the Jhelum," Geelani once said.
Then, co-ed schools are dangerous because "boys and girls studying together is like putting fire and hay together. The hay will burn to ashes." All this, Geelani said, is part of the India's plan to destroy Kashmir. "They want them to turn into alcoholics; they want to destroy Islam."
Not one voice rises against this diatribe. Last Sunday, a Srinagar school organised a picnic for its students near Anantnag. Some 300 boys and girls from Class V to X spent the day on a meadow. The morning was spent with children playing cricket and splashing water on each other. In the afternoon, they had just sat down to eat, when a delegation appeared from the next village. "They just walked up to the principle and started abusing him, calling him a traitor, immoral, of spoiling Kashmiri children by allowing boys and girls to mix. Not one teacher dared speak a word. They just sat and heard quietly," said a teacher present there.
What about the Hurriyat moderates, the darlings of TV studios and conferences in Delhi? Who talk about the secular nature of the Kashmir struggle? Most have been silent or, true to their past behaviour, meekly followed the lead set by Geelani.
The Kashmiri youth live very different lives from their counterparts anywhere in the world. Since 1990, not a single cinema hall has functioned in the state. That is why the irony: scores of films made about Kashmir have never been shown here.
Last week, a storyteller finally got around to showing his film in Srinagar after more than a year of travelling the world. The screening was in a local cafe and watched by around 100 people.
No films, no music and who knows a ban on mobile phones for girls next?
SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday took three Government Medical College (GMC) junior doctors into preventive custody for preaching hatred and bigotry and for asking people to desist from the "unIslamic" musical celebrations of the institute. The police has decided to release the three after the golden jubilee celebrations of the college are over.
The three doctors were seen in the college distributing pamphlets that dubbed music, dance and singing as "immoral","cultural aggression", "satanic culture" and "unislamic".

Geelani’s autobiography’s finds takers in GOC Hasnain, political opponents
There might be many opponents of hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s ideology on Kashmir but the 82-year-old aging separatist has found many takers in the army, paramilitary security forces and mainstream political parties for his autobiography Wular Kinare, released on
Thursday.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the valley’s strategic Chinar Corps Lt General Syed Ata Hasnain had placed order for the book on the same day the book was released.
“Hasnain sahib asked for three copies of Geelani’s autobiography. We handed the copies over to the personnel sent by Hasnain sahib at the venue of the book release,” Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar told the Hindustan Times.
The book, Wular Kinare (From banks of Wular), which is an autobiography and touches Geelani’s life up to 1970s, was released in a Srinagar hotel before a selected audience on Thursday. More than 150 copies were sold at the venue only, immediately after the release.
The book reveals unheard details of Geelani’s life like he doing menial jobs at the house of famous Urdu writer Muhammad Din Fauq’s daughter at Lahore. “Fauq promised me to help in continuing my higher education in Lahore but I fled the place soon,” writes Geelani.
Geelani, an ardent supporter of accession of Kashmir with Pakistan, also lashes out at Pakistani authorities of the 1947 “for not being assertive” about Kashmir.
The Hurriyat had printed 2000 copies of the book. “Given the demand we will release second edition soon with bigger number of copies. We are also receiving calls from outside Kashmir,” said Akbar.
Valley’s known bookshop, Khan News Agency, owner Hilal Ahmad too observes good sale of the book, particularly with the security establishment. “CRPF men are buying the book for their officers,” said Ahmad.
“Geelani might be in opposition to our stand but there is no harm reading his book to understand him,” said CRPF spokesman Prabhakar Tripathy.
The Hurriyat has already sent the book to a number of writers like well-known columnist A.G. Noorani and scribe M.J. Akbar. “We will send copies of the book to writers and political leaders in Pakistan soon,” said Akbar.

Re: J&K News and Discussion-2011
Look beyond LoC
While we routinely claim that the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir acceded to India on October 26, 1947, and is now an integral part of the Indian Union, both in terms of national and international laws, we take little interest in what is happening in the vast area which has been in illegal occupation of Pakistan.
The elections on June 26, held in a part of that area for its Legislative Assembly, for example, went practically unnoticed in our media. The strategic importance of this area is immense and China, with the collaboration of Pakistan, has been making extensive inroads into it.
We call the area in question Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). On the other side of the Line of Control, it is known as “Azad Jammu and Kashmir”, with the fiction of sovereignty woven around it: Its name is not even mentioned in the Constitution of Pakistan, nor does it have any representation in the Pakistan National Assembly or senate.
The area of “Azad Jammu and Kashmir” is about 78,114 sq. km., which is roughly one-third of the total area (222,236 sq. km.) of the erstwhile princely state. Of this, about 85 per cent constitutes the two main regions of Gilgit and Baltistan and three smaller territories of Hunza, Nagar and Punial.
These regions/territories, grouped together and separated from “Azad Jammu and Kashmir”, have been designated as the Federally Administered Northern Areas (Fana).
The area that remains as “Azad Jammu and Kashmir” is only 15 per cent of the total area occupied by Pakistan and it is in this area that elections to the 49-member Legislative Assembly were held in June. The attempt of Pakistan has all along been to present this area to the world as a “quasi-sovereign” entity with a democratic set-up. But stark facts stand in the way of this attempt.
“Azad Jammu and Kashmir” is governed by its interim Constitution of 1974 which has quite a few trappings of sovereignty. Apart from its law-making Legislative Assembly, it has a Supreme Court and an Election Commission.
Its head of government and constitutional head are called Prime Minister and President respectively. But all these trappings have little meaning — in reality, the area is run as a fiefdom of the federal government of Pakistan.
According to the provisions of the aforesaid Constitution itself, there is an “Azad Jammu and Kashmir Council” of which the Prime Minister of Pakistan is the chairman and the federal minister for Kashmir affairs its secretary.
The Prime Minister of “Azad Jammu and Kashmir” is merely its vice-chairman. The council has 11 other members of whom five are members of federal Parliament. This is an all-powerful body with as many as 52 legislative items under its jurisdiction.
The council has the sole power to declare emergency and dissolve the Legislative Assembly and its decisions cannot be challenged in the Supreme Court of “Azad Jammu and Kashmir”.
Its vast jurisdiction and extensive powers leave hardly anything to the government of “Azad Jammu and Kashmir”. Even appointments to all key posts — chief secretary, finance secretary and inspector-general of police among others — are made by the federal government. No wonder the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees has reckoned the area as “not free”.
The northern areas are in a much worse position. Till 2009, they did not even have a semblance of a representative body and were directly administered by the federal government through a joint-secretary of the ministry of defence.
A sizeable demographic change was also brought about by settling a large number of Pathans and Punjabi Sunni Muslims in these areas which earlier had an overwhelming majority of Shia and Ismaili population.
All this caused acute resentment amongst the people. A number of public agitations, including violent ones, followed. The Pakistan government relented. To assuage the anger, it issued an ordinance, notified as the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order, 2009.
Under this order, to preserve the local identity, the northern areas were renamed Gilgit-Baltistan. The order also provides for an elected Legislative Assembly and a governor and chief minister.
What is significant is that the entire area, which legally belongs to India, has been formally incorporated in Pakistan. The feeble protests made by the Government of India and political parties of Jammu and Kashmir and of Azad Jammu and Kashmir were ignored by Pakistan. Earlier in 1963, Pakistan had virtually ceded 5,180 sq. km. area to China, in addition to about 37,555 sq. km. which was already in its possession.
India has paid dearly for not paying serious attention to the developments on the other side of Line of Control. During the last 20 years, both the “Azad Jammu and Kashmir” area and Gilgit-Baltistan region have caused grave problems. The former became an active centre for cross-border terrorism, and the latter served as an avenue of intrusion into Kargil, which resulted in the Kargil War of 1999.
What should be a matter of special concern to India right now is that the Pakistan-China axis is sowing seeds for future trouble in the region. Of late, Pakistan has been giving de facto control of a vast chunk of Gilgit-Baltistan area to China for building rail and road links between Eastern China and Pakistani port cum naval bases at Gwadar, Pasni and Ormara.
With the completion of these projects, China would be able to transport its goods for exports to and imports from the Gulf countries in two days instead of the present period of 22 days. The Karakoram Highway is also being extended and strengthened to provide an effective link between Sinkiang province of China and Pakistan.
All this is bound to establish stronger strategic and economic bonds between Pakistan and China. Both may join hands to cause more difficulties for India with regard to the Kashmir issue and also for the United States vis-à-vis its interests in Afghanistan.
Already, about 10,000 soldiers of the Peoples’ Liberation Army are working in Gilgit-Baltistan on road, rail, irrigation and other development projects.
It is time India started taking a closer look at the events on the other side of Line of Control and evolved an effective strategy to counter their adverse fall-outs.

450 terrorists in 42 Pak training camps: GOC
General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 16 Corps, Lt Gen J P Nehra said "As per intelligence inputs, there are 42 training camps, some closer to LoC are still functional on that side and nearly 400 to 450 militants are there in these camps waiting for the opportunity to cross over to this side. When and where they will attempt to infiltrate, they will be watched. The troops all along the borders are on the alert round the clock".
Replying to another question, Lt Gen Nehra disclosed as per latest inputs nearly 175 LeT and Hizbul Mujahideen militants were operating in the South of Pir Panjal including Rajouri-Poonch, Udhampur, Reasi, Banihal, Ramban and Doda. Foreigners are still dominating but most of them have turned inactive in view of mounting pressure of security forces and lack of local support, he asserted.
When asked about use of satellite communication by militants, Lt Gen Nehra said they have been using it earlier also. But militants in J&K are now more relying on internet and social working sites, besides manual communication. He said militants are now using Facebook and internet in addition to manual communication, marking a change of trend. Mobile phones are less used now because they are easily intercepted, he added.

news on non state actors sponsored by state actors - Entire LeT leadership wiped out in Lolab, Sopore
http://www.dailyexcelsior.com/SRINAGAR, July 16: Security forces in North Kashmir have achieved major success in the recent years against Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) by eliminating their top brass in Maidanpora area of Lolab yesterday. Recovery of the bodies from the debris of the house of Ghulam Muhammad Mir that was raised to rubble in 10 hours long gun battle confirmed the death of top LeT commanders of North Kashmir.
After eliminating these top commanders of LeT, security agencies are after the most wanted LeT commander of Kashmir, Abdullah Uni, now. He is operating from North Kashmir and has given slip to security forces at least 10 times in past few years.
Srinagar based Defence spokesperson Lt Col JS Brar identified the slain terrorists as divisional commander, North Kashmir, Saqib alias Sohail of Kasur, Pakistan; divisional commander, Kupwara Hamad alias Haneef alias Alfa Islam of Abbottabad, Pakistan; divisional commander Central Kashmir, Qari Saifullah, battalion commander LeT Chotta Saad, and battalion commander, Jaish-e-Mohammad Umair alias Hafiz.
Saqib who was active in North Kashmir since 2009 was considered to be the backbone of Lashkar in Lolab area.
Hamad was one of the most wanted militants in North Kashmir and was active since 2008. He was injured in an Army operation in December last year.
Qari Saifullah was active in Ganderal and Harwan areas of Central Kashmir.
‘‘This is a major success and has almost wiped out the entire Lashkar leadership in Lolab and Sopore areas,’’ he said.
Five AK rifles have been recovered so far.
DIG North Kashmir Munir Ahmad Khan said they were behind last week's Sopore Police Station attack in which one police man was killed and 8 others were injured.
Security agencies reveal that Sopore was the main target of these LeT militants.

I think the 72s are calling out to Abdullah Uni and his time to meet them is coming fast ( courtesy IA)After eliminating these top commanders of LeT, security agencies are after the most wanted LeT commander of Kashmir, Abdullah Uni, now. He is operating from North Kashmir and has given slip to security forces at least 10 times in past few years.

I am surprised that no one has posted any updates in this thread on the Fai affair unfolding in the US courts.

Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai Arrested By FBI: Virginia Man Allegedly On Pakistani Spy Payroll
For a paki, "alleged" means "guilty" until proven otherwise.
For a paki, "alleged" means "guilty" until proven otherwise.
The head of a Washington advocacy group was arrested Tuesday on charges that he'd been on the payroll of Pakistan's spy agency for years and hid millions of dollars used for illegal lobbying.
Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, of Fairfax, Va., is the executive director of the Kashmiri American Council, which prosecutors said was being run in secret by the Pakistani government. Prosecutors said Pakistani government officials reviewed Fai's budget and directed him to make campaign donations to Congress and develop sources at the White House and State Department.
A second man, Zaheer Ahmad, was also charged. Prosecutors said he recruited people to act as straw donors who would give money that really was coming from the Pakistani government. Ahmad is not under arrest and is in Pakistan, prosecutors said. Both men are U.S. citizens.
Gasp!!! ISI payroll, eh? Why is that not a shocker to most of us on this forum? Lets see if the pakis extradite Ahmad to the US (as he is a US citizen) without "debriefing" him first. Time also for the FBI to check the backgrounds of al those interns who worked for Senator Burton. Thats where he got those policy papers."I believe that Fai has received approximately $500,000 to $700,000 per year from the government of Pakistan," the FBI said in an affidavit filed in federal court in Alexandria, Va.

Up to 80 per cent of the public statements made by Ghulam Nabi Fai, who was arrested here for allegedly collaborating with ISI by funnelling money to influence US policy on Kashmir, were provided by the Pakistani spy agency to ''repeat and disseminate verbatim''
"The other 20 per cent of the KAC's messaging consists of Fai's own ideas, which have been pre-approved by the ISI but not provided by them," it said.
No overt ties to pa'astan? Au contraire, mon ami. Regardez, s'il vous plait:According to court documents, a confidential witness told the FBI the ISI selected Fai because he had no overt ties to Pakistan.

Among those who travelled on Fai's invitation included interlocutor on Jammu and Kashmir and senior journalist Dileep Padgaonkar.
When contacted, Padgaonkar said he did travel on Fai's invitation but that was a long time back and he did not have faintest of idea about his affiliations with ISI as "Google was not available then."
Re: J&K News and Discussion-2011
On the contrary search tools of some kind have been available for a long time - and Mr. Fai's involvement in shady Kashmiri group related money-transferring business has been known for a long time. Also, many of these conferences (based on anecdotal experiences) become out and out India bashing seminars - it does not take too long to figure out that there's something fishy about them. When contacted, Padgaonkar said he did travel on Fai's invitation but that was a long time back and he did not have faintest of idea about his affiliations with ISI as "Google was not available then."
Finally, as N-3 has pointed out several times - the fact that these are Paki government sponsored jamborees has been in the media for a while - Padgaonkar had enough time to clarify and apologize.
Incidentally, the chaiwallah's fourth cousin tells me, that Padgonakar was known to travel to Pakistan very frequently a few years ago, on Paki government funds - something that other journalists, including those at TOI, found very strange.

India's Perm. Rep. at the UN, Nirupam Sen, declined to attend. If he had attended, his speech would have been listed under MEA records, which it aint.
