“When we tried to stop them from entering the area, some of them claimed to be coaches or guardians of the swimmers,” said Agha. She added according to the rules, men are not allowed near the pool area when women are swimming there.

She added before this a verbal protest was lodged with the Pakistan Swimming Federation (PSF) Secretary Major (retd) Majid Waseem who defended the presence of men by saying that this was part of the federation policy for the last five years. Waseem told The Express Tribune that “only technicians, a referee and Kiran Khan’s father, who is her coach, were there” during the event. He said that there isn’t a single woman in Pakistan qualified to control the electronic system.

Zarnab Aurakzai, 21, who had come from UK to participate in the championship, said she was “shocked” to see men from the administration and military near the pool when she went to rehearse on Saturday, a day before the event. She said, “I asked them to leave the area as they were not allowed when females were in the swimming pool, but they refused to get out. Then I approached the organisers, who said it is usually the case here. After hearing all this, I refused to participate.”

Now Bakistan wants its own Anna Hazare

Kisan Baburao Hazare, popularly known as Anna Hazare, is the face of India’s fight against corruption. He went on a fast unto death in June to protest against the menace of corruption, forcing a populist awakening in the middle classes. This led the main political parties to urge him to end his fast after assuring him that they would do concrete legislation to punish the corrupt within the ruling elite and the bureaucracy. He had to break his fast as doctors feared that he might have a liver failure. Anna has again threatened to launch another fast on August 16, if immediate steps are not taken by parliament to bring everybody under the jurisdiction of a powerful independent anti-corruption body that enjoys constitutional protection. All the major political parties are holding parleys to draft a law which can be passed by parliament. He is being seen as a man who has stood up to wage a non-violent political struggle against corruption.

Why can’t we have someone from the middle classes to stand up and launch a movement to eradicate corruption? Our religious leaders and the civil society are actually abetting corruption by keeping silent. While corruption may be a worldwide phenomenon, in Pakistan it has become a menace threatening the very survival of our country. Here, political parties merge and form alliances to protect the corrupt within their rank and file. There is no shame or remorse displayed by those caught plundering the state exchequer and the money belonging to widows, orphans and pensioners. Instead of considering corruption a shameful act, we have had an MNA who had the courage to stand up and defend ‘everyone’s right to commit corruption’.
