I have been suggesting that the BJP needs to split to weed out the Brajesh Mishra / Pramod Mahajan types. The rest should join hands with Hazare, Ramdev and other nationalist forces.

Gentlemen, please study this very important fact as it will explain the good doctor's actions. The recent US criticism-urging "restraint" in tackling AH and the GOI's stinging response,is because any heavy-handed action by the GOI/MMS in dealing with Anna will undermine Uncle Sam's goal of toppling several Arab and other regimes,if the world's largest democracy,India, uses musclepower to stifle dissent. If India can and show the world its little finger-just like Sri Lanka,so will the rest of the independent world, especially Islamic regimes, some of whom are already giving free advice to Yanqui poodle Britain!

Uncle Sam cannot abandon his favourite Indian son, Uncle "Scam",the good mendicant of snake-oil! What is happening is that the "medicine" to cure corruption in India isn't working and the impatient patient is getting more boisterous by the day,fed up of the snake-oil being shoved down his throat. When a village apothecary called Anna says that the western form of medicine isn't working and he has a better medicine and a better cure...."change the doctor",the snake-oil mendicant has lost his cool and instead of allowing a team of specialists including the young intern waiting in the wings to take over from the doctor, has gone for the apothecary's throat!

In short,Uncle Sam is fearful of losing its snake-oil sales in India, and in trying to warn and advise the mendicant to pour it down Indian's throats more carefully, has actually got him hot under his turban. The mendicant has lost the plot.He has taken umbrage, hating any criticism of his medical style, and is also taking advantage of the fact that the Matron of the hospital is herself unwell, laid low with a serious ailment, while the young intern is unsure of himself, sidelining his senior colleagues who want other holistic methods of treatment to be used instead. While Uncle Sam frets,Uncle "Scam" has taken the scalpel weilding it at the apothecary's throat. While the two battle it out,the patient is also bestirring himself and if he does not get his "dose of comatose" might break free and cause a real disturbance causing havoc in the hospital and sending the good doctor and his specialists fleeing for their lives!

The team in Congress ruling group is ridiculing India as a country. They are betrayers of this country. They wanted to destory this country's growth at the cost of protecting their wealth and corruption. As I already wrote there is no proper opposition political party with a mind to lead all people in India - I mean- all inclusive! When there is no strong opposite parties or groups democracy seems failure. Congress govt began to behave like red army in China!

So what now? Are people courting arrest as part of the "jail bharo" phase, or is this yet another damp squib like Ramdev?

on BBC right now-
India has denied it is stifling democratic protest after police arrested 1,300 people to halt a hunger strike by an anti-corruption activist. Mr Hazare has called the proposed anti-corruption legislation a "cruel joke" and has described the fight against corruption as the "second war of independence". He said the movement would not stop with his arrest.

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, a prominent supporter of Mr Hazare, said his detention proved that the government was "dictatorial and not heeding to the democratic rights of the people".

Several other prominent supporters of Mr Hazare were also detained.

On Monday, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said hunger strikes by campaigners would not help to tackle corruption.

Mr Hazare says the proposed anti-corruption ombudsman should be able to investigate any official - including the prime minister and judges.

India has recently been hit by a string of high-profile corruption scandals, including a multibillion dollar alleged telecoms scam, alleged financial malpractices in connection with the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and allegations that houses for war widows were diverted to civil servants.

Critics of the government say the scandals point to a pervasive culture of corruption in Mr Singh's administration

This government has lost any sheen of legitimacy that it may have had.

The people of India should unite and consign these people to the dustbin of history in the next round of elections...
In a broad day light murder, an RTI activist and a strong supporter of Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement, Shehla Masood was shot dead around 11.30 am on Tuesday.

Unidentified assailant shot her dead from point blank range while she was leaving in her car to attend a demonstration in support of Anna Hazare.

About 35 years old, Shehla was still sitting in the driver's seat when she was attacked, however, no one heard any gun shot. When the car didn't move for a while, the family members came out only to find that she had collapsed on one side with blood oozing out from her chest.

She was shot in her chest. The murder took place just in front of her house in Koh-e-Fiza locality of Bhopal. However, more details are still awaited as a post- mortem is still on.

The seriousness of the crime could be ascertained from the fact that the director general of police SK Rout and Additional director general Intelligence Rishi Kumar Shukla also inspected the crime scene along with the IG and SSP of Bhopal.

Shehla was an RTI and a wild life activist and had annoyed many people while seeking information and raising issues.

A) I dont know if the prepatrators of the crime in MP are connected to Central Govt.

B) This Govt has been elected by our people, if the people are really frustrated let them show in the democratic process in 2014 ignoring the PR Blitz which is bound to start from 2012 with Ram Sene type baffoons etc to try and dicredit any opposition.

India unites: Protests, fasts across nation in support of Anna Hazare
TNN & Agencies | Aug 16, 2011, 12.17PM IST

NEW DELHI: The arrest of Anna Hazare ahead of his indefinite fast in Delhi on Tuesday to protest a toothless anti-corruption bill approved by the cabinet, evoked countrywide protests. The Gandhian was detained this morning by the police in Delhi as he was about to set out for his fast in support of the Lokpal Bill.

Activist Arvind Kejriwal, who was also detained along with Hazare just as they stepped out of their residence in east Delhi, was also taken to Civil Lines, Police Officers Mess in north Delhi along with him.

As news of Hazare's arrest spread, sporadic protests broke out across the capital, leading to the detention of more than 500 supporters, including former top cop Kiran Bedi and lawyer Shanti Bhushan.

The events unfolded after Hazare and Kejriwal left their flat in Supreme Enclave early Tuesday for their fast at Jaiprakash Narayan Park. As they got out of the lift in the apartment complex, around 20 police officers in plain clothes encircled them and whisked them away in a police van.

Hazare's supporters, who had gathered in hundreds in the apartment complex, shouted anti-government slogans and praised the social activist. A large number of them followed the cavalcade all the way to north Delhi.

The police formed a human chain on the road to prevent any untoward incident. There were massive protests in Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, and near the Delhi University campus.

Just before his arrest, Hazare told a news channel: "Don't let my arrest stop this movement. This is the nation's second struggle for freedom. The entire world has come to know how deep rooted corruption is."

He added: "I appeal to you that let there be no violence in this movement. I also appeal to you, young and old alike, to give eight days of your life to the nation - if necessary for a jail bharo andolan."

Prashant Bhushan, one of Hazare's team members, said: "Anna's arrest is illegal, unconstitutional... This government has no faith in democratic values. It has become dictatorial. This situation is like the Emergency period."

Former Karnataka lokayukta, another member of Team Anna, described the detentions as "unfortunate".

Ramon Magsaysay award winner Bedi, who was detained from Rajghat, said: "When Anna asked on what charges was he arrested, the police said they had just been given orders.

"The Delhi Police is capable of handling such peaceful protests... These (arrests) are just orders from above. It's during the Emergency that such things used to happen, arrests just because there were orders."

:x Rejecting outright that the Delhi Police was influenced by political pressure, Congress leader Ambika Soni said: "The police is not under any political influence. They are working independently.

"I am sure Anna's supporters will not resort to violence but who can ensure that two-three protestors will not resort to violence and property is vandalised or people are hurt? So we have to take police help."

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the arrest of Hazare, comparing the scenario to the "1975 Emergency like situation".

"It is regrettable and condemnable. This government is bent upon crushing anyone who wants to protest against corruption," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

"The language used today is identical to that during the Emergency period. I regret many people in government today were there that time too, still they can't understand the people. Anna is articulating the emotion of the distress of people against rampant corruption," he added.
Protests in Punjab, Haryana
BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu and other BJP leaders held a candle march in support of Anna. Phagwara Parshuram Sena started a day long hunger strike in Phagwara in Guru Hargobind Nagar area near Improvement Trust Office to protest against Anna Hazare's arrest.

Carrying flags and placards, hundreds of Anna supporters gathered on Madhya Marg, the main artery of Chandigarh. Advocates went on strike in Phagwara to protest against Anna Hazare's, Arvind Kejriwal's and Kiran Bedi's arrest by the Delhi police, terming it as an attack on the fundamental right to protest.

Members of Shaheed Bhagat Singh memorial society gathered at the hall gate to demonstrate against the arrest and to extend support to Anna.

Haryana khap panchayats also announced to support the Anna agitation for the Jan Lokpal Bill.
Fast, demos in solidarity with Hazare in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rights activists, writers, artists and professionals from different walks in Kerala came out against the arrest of Anna Hazare and his close associates in New Delhi.

Activists under "Citizen's Forum" organised a fast in the state capital protesting Hazare's arrest and pledging support to his struggle for probity in public life and an effective Jan Lokpal legislation.

Several youths, including IT professionals, gathered under the banner of "India Against Corruption" here in support of the anti-graft movement launched by the Gandhian.

"There is no justification for the arrest of Hazare. His campaign is not going to be suppressed through this undemocratic action. He is certain to gain massive support from all parts of the nation in the coming days," an activist said.

The student's outfit ABVP has given a call to boycott classes in protest against Hazare's arrest.
Supporters protest Anna's detention in Orissa

BHUBANESWAR: Activist Anna Hazare's supporters took out processions, organised meetings and staged demonstrations across Orissa to protest his detention in New Delhi.

While a group of people shouting slogans against the central government took out a march here, hundreds of activists held a protest meeting near the state assembly.

"The way the government dealt with Hazare, it reminded us of the 1975 Emergency," human rights activist Prafulla Samantray, who staged protest with hundreds other near the state assembly, said. The detention is condemnable, he said.

Chennai begins fast to support Hazare

CHENNAI: People in Chennai gathered on Tuesday to support social activist Anna Hazare's demand for a strong anti-corruption bill, said the India Against Corruption (IAC), which backs the leader.

"With Anna Hazare being detained by Delhi Police, we will soon decide on the issue of courting arrest," media coordinator for IAC Bhavana Upadhyaya said.

"There are 25 people who have registered their names for the indefinite fast and around 70 for participating in relay fast," Upadhyaya said.

Freedom fighter Lakshmikanthan Bharathi, 85, began his fast here. Ninety-year-old Venkata Kalyanam, former personal secretary to Mahatma Gandhi, is also expected to join.

Corporate executives, software professionals, media artistes and small businessmen are at the venue of fast in south Chennai, Upadhyaya said.

Around 25 NGOs have extended their support to the struggle, she said.

"We are holding the fast in a private plot and we have booked the plot for five days," she said adding, the police are friendly.

Several others, including actor Arvind Swamy who starred in "Roja", are expected to participate.

Youth icon and food service industrialist Sharath Babu has agreed to fast for two days, Upadhyaya added.

It looks like BJP & Co are too weak hence congress will continue to enjoy TINA (there is no alternative) factor. Sonia probably has used intelligence to get skeletons in the cupboards of BJPites hence later are reluctant to launch direct attack. I wish Atal B B had done the same during his tenure.

Kiran bedi likely to land in Tihar as well

http://www.newsbullet.in/india/34-more/ ... edi-tweets
New Delhi: Former police officer Kiran Bedi tweeted on Tuesday that she has refused to offer bail after being arrested with Anna Hazare and that she may be sent to Tihar Jail.

"I have been asked to offer bail. I have refused to. It's a matter of moments now when I may be sent into judicial custody in Tihar Jail," Bedi tweeted.

What else did people expect from GoI?

1300 activists joined AH in the protest, which captured entire nation's imagination? And this is youth India. And we have 50-100 people joining the agitation in various cities across the nation? :rotfl: 1300 activists out of billion plus Indians? Probably more would have stopped for a moment on their way to work, school, movies etc?

No wonder BR got even worse treatment, because he was able to "organize" few thousands to come prepared for a week long agitation.

And GoI with all its million plus para-military force cannot offer security and land-and-order control for a group of 1300 activists?

How ironic, while we have just celebrated our 64th Independence Day,our current ruling dispensation behaves as shamefully as the British Raj,nay worse because they are doing it to their own people, while the Raj held the mistaken belief that "God was an Englishman"!

The arrest of Anna H. is fast turning him into India's Gandhian martyr of the 21st century. If Bapuji,as he preferred being called, was our great leader of the first half of the 21st century and JP the moral leader of the latter half, then Anna Hazare is the clear successor to that title of being the conscience keeper of the nation for this era.The Man Mohan Singh's,who prefer to genuflect and prostrate themselves before the white man, leaving the people of India in grinding poverty, despite two terms at the helm of state,MMS's great legacy to Indian history is to be remembered as the biggest scamster ever."Uncle Scam",has now shown the true fascist colour of his regime. His litany of lies and chicanery in trying to pass the buck on the tsunami of scams that has hit the nation, now followed by his fascist ideology in full vent, shows him to be India's neo-Nazi of the millenium.Truly is a second freedom struggle to be waged to rid the nation of these rapacious individuals like Singh & co.,who have reinvented their version of John Co. to enslave Indians and impoverish yet again.

Democracy has been murdered in India once more and the name and rputation of of Man Mohan Singh is now at the very depths of the sewer. This sewer rat must be thrown out of office at the earliest, the very least punishment that he deserves, which in truth should be what every man who betrays the nation's trust, constitution and people deserve...the gibbet.

Slamming the government over the arrest of Anna Hazare and his team, BJP-led NDA, Left and several other Opposition parties today (August 16) joined ranks and demanded a statement by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on "violation of democratic rights".

As Hazare was arrested and sent to Tihar Jail, leaders of BJP, JD(U), Shiv Sena, CPI(M), CPI, Samajwadi Party, RJD and some other non-UPA parties held a meeting to discuss common strategy over the issue and came up with a vow to continue their agitation in Parliament against corruption.

"It has been decided that the Prime Minister should make a statement in both Houses of Parliament on whatever is happening in the country. Nobody else," Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said.

She said the demand for the Prime Minister's statement will be made tomorrow and it will determine Parliament's functioning.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the Bombay high court order granting bail to the country's alleged biggest tax evader Hasan Ali Khan.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir said the effect of the Bombay High Court's order granting bail to him shall not be operational till Thursday.

The SC directed Arthur Road jail authorities not to release Khan till August 18, when it will hear Enforcement Directorates appeal challenging the bail.

Reactions from across the Indian polity.... posting a few...
"I urge the people to take to the streets and support Anna's movement democratically and peacefully. The detention is more or less similar to arrest of late Jayaprakash Narayan against corruption on June 26, 1974.Jan Lokpal expresses the wishes of common people and therefore, the parliament and parliamentarians should respect people's desire."
-- Narendra Modi, Chief Minister, Gujarat
The Congress has panicked over the movement of Anna Hazare as it is the Congress leaders who had stashed money abroad. We are with the movement. Its a murder of democracy."
-- Prakash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab
"His detention is unconstitutional and if the Government has any sense left, Hazare and his supporters should be released immediately. There was no violence happening there and there was no need for this. The Government's step has led to a situation where students, advocates and others have come on road to protest against this."
-- Mulayam Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Party Leader
"The police action against Anna Hazare, who was set to launch a hunger-strike in a peaceful manner demanding a stronger Jan Lokpal legislation, was totally undemocratic and unconstitutional. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should apologise to the nation for having sent Hazare and other social activists, who are fighting against corruption, to Tihar jail. The arrest of Hazare and his team is the height of the despotic rule of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre that is suppressing all civil rights."
-- N.Chandrababu Naidu, President, Telugu Desum Party
"It is a murder of democracy... It is also a rehearsal of emergency which people will never tolerate. It seems that the people sitting in Delhi don't have the realisation of democratic values... It is sheer desperation of those sitting at the Centre."
-- Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister, Bihar
"The arrest of Anna Hazare can be dangerous for democracy as it is his fundamental right to protest... One can't snatch the right of a free citizen. The speed shown in arresting him is condemnable. The way the Centre is trying to stop Anna Hazare's movement is wrong,"
-- Arjun Munda, Chief Minister, Jharkhand
"We condemn the arrest of Hazare and his team and the ban on their hunger strike. We consider it as an attack on the democratic rights of the citizens.Yesterday, the Prime Minister mentioned his commitment against corruption 16 times in his Independence Day speech and next day he arrests people who want to peacefully protest against corruption.May be Congress leadership cannot tolerate anti-corruption movement because its own government is steeped in corruption, scams and scandals."
-- Brinda Karat, Leader, CPI(M)
"I am not surprised at this development. This is the direction in which this government is moving. Instead of dealing with the problem of corruption and owning responsibility it is trying to find scapegoats and stopping peaceful protests."

Absolutely. Do not even under estimate the fear factor. She has see JP movement and VP.Singh movements. She knows that if there are no non-democratic handles it is a checkmate.

Hours after Anna Hazare was taken into preventive custody, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued notices to Union Home Secretary and Delhi Police Commissioner seeking a report within two weeks on the episode.

The Commission notice came this evening after it received a complaint from a human rights activist Anirudhasudhan Chakraborty, who alleged that provisions of Constitution and international human rights conventions were violated in the police action against Hazare and his supporters.

"The Commission received a complaint regarding the preventive action against Hazare. The complainant claimed that Hazare and his supporters were to stage a peaceful protest and action has been taken against them," an NHRC spokesperson said.

"The NHRC has asked Union Home Secretary R K Singh and Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta to submit a report about the action taken against Hazare and others within two weeks," the spokesperson said.

Hazare and his seven supporters, including activists Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, were placed under preventive arrest this morning after the Gandhian announced that he would defy prohibitory orders to stage a protest at Jai Prakash Narain Park near Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium.

if Antony was excluded from the 'new core group' chaired by MMS, means his advice is out of favour and he is no more in the trusted cycle of psychophants shaping the GOI response.

some of the more honest types onboard the ship need to do some soul searching and decide is that what they want their legacy to be seen as...

one thing is sure - if and when a non-INC govt comes in delhi, they will not make the same mistake that NDA govt made in not going after INC secrets (perhaps due to skeletions in own cupboard). the public now realizes everyone has skeletons and would be happy to see hitherto hidden INC skeletions. The Family could expect a lot of heat , incl midnight raids tamil nadu style .... methinks if they lose power, the only safe place will be abroad , under the protection of a foreign govt.

BJP should campaign for one-term for the PM post. Considering the coalition politics, the campaign should be geared for "Not more than 1800 days". This way, a good PM should be able to be head even if she or he is targeted and pulled down say after 7 or 70 days. Ruling by proxy is not that easy, and when the players change the control becomes challenging.

Reliable sources indicate even her location is on the wrong coast. Unless there is clarity as to how the MMS govt retains the power she might not be back for a long time.

All this atyachar while she is away is to keep her image clean and let MMS take the mud.

The big fear is that the system has gotten Kalmadi and its a matter of time to get to Dixit. From then the trail leads directly to SG not baba. Hence he is back in desh to sip juice with hunger strikers.

Ambika Soni et all hyper activity is to clean up the mess to allow SG to comeback.

I guess its "Indian Spring" now.

Scams and IB can be used against politicians to keep them as nominal oppositon for only so long. If a mass leader channels the pent up public anger(frequent terrorism, scams, corruption,. price rise for daily commodities etc.) then no IB can keep you in power. That was the lesson of Emergency.

Is Anna Hazare really helping India or is he a Congress stooge to steal the light away and start a splinter party down the future to divide opposition vote. Except him, all his coterie is made up of the most anti-india group ever ranging from harsh mandar to wajahat habibullah to the bhushans.

HT: Bedi and Bhushan were detained under the Delhi Police Act, on charges of refusing to comply with the directions given by a police officer.

Hazare, fellow activist Arvind Kejriwal and six supporters were sent to Tihar Jail by a special executive magistrate for not signing a bail bond and promising not to violate prohibitory orders.

Look at Anna Hazare's work. And see if it aligns with India or not.

Currently the loyal opposition led by NDA is either incapable nor effective. Such being the case some one has to oppose and keep the INC loot meisters/election stealers in place. Its not the BJP or the Left nor the Turd force.

GD,

I think differently. By being part of party core team (RG, AP, JD, AKA) AKA is not reliable for the GoI core team (MMS, PM, PC, KS etc). This is some internal revolt. I am not sure if MMS is Raksha or Indu Sharma. Rajmata is definitely acting like Jeevasiddhi, a.k.a mahananda

+1. Current dispensation is like this -

MMS is acting like he is a non-INC PM
BJP opposition is acting like it is part of the govt.

You can see the heavy hands of kapil sibal and chidu in all this.

They have wantonly and needlessly created an Anna legend where none probably existed in

such massive proportions.

They have also isolated the old man in prison without his micromanagers to run interference

onlee.

Things will get interesting.
