The snipers in the picture are from 5 Assam Battalion.

In the topmost pic on this page - Arjun makes everything around it look puny!!! I almost missed the T-90 between the BMPs...

rohit, just asking, how do you know it's a T-90 and not T-72 from that distance ?

^ ERA bricks on front section of the turret ? the size of bricks on T-72 is smaller and layout is different too.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^^ I think from its flattish turret.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
I could not make out any ERA bricks. http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/jKJL8 ... 025254.jpg

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^ I was referring to the triangular wedge like projection on the frontal turret arc ~40 deg on either side of the MG, I have never seen that on a T-72; smaller ERA bricks on it's domed turret don't give a similar silhouette.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
negi, for me all that is applicable only when the tank is closer, from that distance I can't make out any of those details. UPG T-72 has similar silhouette at that distance to my eyes.

^^^Livefist has got a good collection of pics from Ex Sudarshan Shakti... Kudos to Shiv Aroor... specifically the Arjun Pics.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Rahul, negi has given the correct explanation. The ERA on the front section of T-90 due to clamshell type arrangement (also because they are bigger and broader than ERA on T-72), when seen from sideways form a shape like this - >. See the image here of ERA on frontal section fro sideways:Rahul M wrote:negi, for me all that is applicable only when the tank is closer, from that distance I can't make out any of those details. For CIA Ajeya, see the image here:

The lines on T-72 are not clean and ERA package actually looks like bricks.

see this pic of Arjun MBT, the formation sign belongs to 12th Inf Div (which has since converted to a RAPID), how come it doesn't sport the formation sign of an Armoured brigade but the parent Div?
This pic is another proof about the conversion of 12th Inf to a RAPID with the recent augmentation of mechanized and armoured elements into it

rohit, you would think I would know that much ?
but in this pic http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/jKJL8 ... 025254.jpg I couldn't make out if it was a t-90, if anything it looked like a T-72 to me. no tell-tale > in silhouette AFA I can see but you ID'ed it as T-90.
so what am I missing ?

In the image with the T-90 and the gentleman standing in front of it is that a Smerch MRBL that I see (the one on the right) ?Gaur wrote:More from Ex Sudarshan Shakti:
Also in the picture with the soldier charging forward why is he carrying a knife when he has a bayonet fixed on his rifle ?
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Yes to the first one and also the gun is silver colored...
there is also a pinaka MRBL

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
actually in this modern era.. is bayonet charge are useful..? [just a noob doubt]
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Strangely with T-72 CIA upgrade they went to great lenght to cover the frontal turret and glacis and side of chassis with ERA tiles but left the side and back of turret without ERA cover.

Yes. Remember how the intruders in Kargil were finished off.jimmy_moh wrote:actually in this modern era.. is bayonet charge are useful..? [just a noob doubt]

The Arjun is so big it dwarfs almost every armoured vehical standing besides it

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Very much so. For instance, bayonets were heavily used in Kargil war. When you turn round a bunker wall/rock and run into an enemy, it is much quicker to just run your weapon through him. This is specially true if your magazine is empty as you would hardly have time to reload a new one. Or in the worse case when your rifle jams at the wrong moment.jimmy_moh wrote:actually in this modern era.. is bayonet charge are useful..? [just a noob doubt]
So, it all depends upon the situation. Ideally, one would rather not like to get into a situation where bayonet charge is required, but if you are unfortunately stuck in such a tight corner then it may be your only hope.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
My dear fellow Orbat junkie - a minor tid-bit for you: Only Independent Armored Brigades (apart from the single Para Bde) have a unique formation sign. When I say Independent, it means that the said armored armd. bde. reports directly to Corps HQ. Even independent infantry or arty bdes don't have unique formation sign (AFAIK). They all sport the formation sign of their respective Corps (or AHQ in certain cases). For mango-abduls: when I write 4(I) Armd. Bde, it means 4th Independent Armored Brigade. (I) denotes independent formation.Shrinivasan wrote:http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bx-keJuRQfY/T ... 757068.jpg see this pic of Arjun MBT, the formation sign belongs to 12th Inf Div (which has since converted to a RAPID), how come it doesn't sport the formation sign of an Armoured brigade but the parent Div? As for RAPIDs - the armored bde is part of the respective RAPID; it is integral to the division. So, 240 Armored Brigade under which the Arjun Regiment falls (75th Armored Regiment), is part of 12 RAPID and will sport the formation sign of 12 RAPID.
Clear?

I've marked the area of the turret in the pic which makes me to believe that this is T-90. Please see the area around the red-circle in the pic below:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/32 ... e123y.png/
The shape of ERA extending backwards from the main gun forms the typical shape that I've referred to.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Guess who is this
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
OK. I guess that is first pic of Smerch with 41 Arty Division. So, now we know that Smerch and Pinaka are together in 41 (this is an inference).
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Bayonet combat is still an integral part of training to make cadets aggressive and bring them into the kill-or-be-killed mode. It adds oomph to a soldier's attitude. (People on this forum who have ever been through a bayonet drill would know).actually in this modern era.. is bayonet charge are useful..? [just a noob doubt]
An infantryman would prefer not to get into a bayonet fight (he'd much rather use a pistol or even a spade) but sometimes, as in Kargil, there is no option. You can compare this with a fighter pilot still training for dog-fights although there are hardly any dogfights in these BVR times. Or fighter jets being still fitted with machine-guns when most of the killing is done by missiles. The point is: when you need it, it's going to save your life.
The bayonet will always be an integral part of the soldier's kit for the psychological factor, if nothing else. Also, it's handy in a number of other ways.

Where did you find the 41st div's sign on the Pinaka/Smerch units??? I can't seem to find it in any of the images on Livefist..
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^^^41 is with Southern command. Zimple onlee, no.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Hit a goldmine of Ex Sudarshan Shakti pics.
Khalsa, here is some high res sniper action for you.
Notice the weapon of the soldier in the above pic? Probably the spotter. But I expect some to commence soon.
Now some usual non res stuff.
There are many more pics at http://bmrnewstrack.blogspot.com/2011/12/live.html
I could only hastly go through the pics. So there might be some more good stuff that I missed.
