Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Game over. Netherlands wins 3-2. We played a lot better than I thought, but too many sloppy finishes.

game over!! A hard fought very fast game!! Excellent hockey!!! It was a tough day for India but I am happy by the team performance!!!

There's nothing called Luck when playing against a Gora, its onlee chal aur kapat.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Good news! Apparently Sangwan's protest has been accepted and Gora Saheb will now review video evidence.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Pluses!!
Very good mid field play! India controlled the ball!
Good goal keeping!
Good center passes!!
Forwards were much better in second half!!
Minuses!
Weak Defence
Defenders do not rush the drag flicker during penalty corner!
both left and right forwards missed 2 sitting chances (just trapped the centered ball for goal)
We could not even get a single penalty corner! Once inside the D instead of trying to hit goal and then running
back to stop counter attack it is better to hit somebody's shoe to get a penalty corner!!
We started slow but made up in the second half!!

Expected a slaughter like the CWG finals against Oz but our guys did manage to pull some back and keep it close till the last minute.
But, the class difference was still apparent.

Competition formatSupratik wrote:what is the format in hockey? QF or straight to SF?
Both the men’s and women’s Hockey competitions begin with a preliminary phase: the 12 teams in each competition are divided into two pools of six, and each team plays every other in their pool. The top two teams in each pool qualify for the semi-finals, the winners of which go head-to-head for the gold. The other teams in the two groups play each other to determine final placings.
In the preliminary phase, teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw.
In the knockout matches, ties are resolved by extra time (two 7½-minute periods), with a golden goal - the first goal scored - winning the match. If still tied after this time, the match is decided by a shoot-out competition of five attempts per team.
For a complete set of rules, please refer to the website of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), the governing body for the sport.
Find out more about the men’s and women’s Hockey competitions at the Olympic Games on the International Olympic Committee website.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
As Sri.Sandhu says, no use of these complaints...
Indian boxing coach G S Sandhu, however, did not sound too optimistic about the complaint and said nothing comes out of such protest.
"It was a disappointing result. Sangwan fought well and it was a close bout. We have lodged a protest but generally nothing comes out of such protest," said Sandhu.
IABF secretary and acting Chef-de-Mission Muralidharan Raja said the protest was Round 2 specific.
"The protest was specific to round two. We thought Sangwan should have got more points in that round," Raja added.
Sangwan really did look promising irrespective of the result and hopes he serves the country in days to come also

Great to see that we have accepted having atleast 1 medal everytime from now on going by the lack of emotions on getting a bronze.
Few years back and celebrations on this medal would have been as if India topped the medal tally. Now, its more like why we didnt get the gold/silver and settled for bronze.

Agreed, now it feels we deserve a medal everytime I see a match. Earlier, it used to be all gloom and pall.

I hope Sangwan's episode serves as a warning to our remaining more stronger medal contenders not to repeat the same mistake.
Well done to Gagan Narang. I thought it was Bindra who got the bronze when I saw the medal tally in the morning; Narang has 2 more events and I hope this medal makes him hungrier for more his other events.
sum: Yes, it's true, we want more than a single medal now. Even a gold in the 10M air rifle would not have sufficed. Multiple medals plus at least one gold is the standard now, which is why people are in angst here now.
It is not true that India is above Germany in the medal tally for the first ever time. We have *finished* above them once - in 1952 they did not win a single gold and we won our customary hockey gold plus the wrestling bronze. Bliss to see. Note that back then it was a unified German team - IOC did not permit East/West German teams until I think 1968.

Suraj-sir,I hope Sangwan's episode serves as a warning to our remaining more stronger medal contenders not to repeat the same mistake.
What mistake are you mentioning about?
From what i saw on TV, Sumit hardly did anything wrong and definitely didnt deserve to lose going by the number of rights he landed on the Brazilian ( he could have been bit more tighter in his defence but didnt see any particualr mistake he made which needs to be avoided)
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
sum: Please don't bother with 'sir'
Don't boxers get live scores at the end of each round ? When they see the discrepancy between scoring and live performance, they need to step it up. If Sangwan was indeed in control he could have been advised to switch gears. I'm not blaming him; he's young and will do better in Rio. But it's not right to dismiss the result as racist bias, without attempting to understand *why* each point was scored as it was. We may not agree with the result, but it helps to know. Any boxing scoring experts here ?

Paes/Vardhan take first set
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
So straight SF. too bad. a draw today was necessary. to keep SF hopes alive.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Suraj, the official tally is not known to the boxer, which is why your own team keeps a tally. Perhaps they scored it and asked Sangwan to play safe accordingly. This need not be racism, just piss poor scoring by the referees.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Talking about hockey!! A Dutch player stopped the ball that was hit by Uthappa with his shin inside their D. Referee didn't gave a penalty corner! India went for Video review! Still it got rejected!! Isn't ball stopped by your legs (not goalkeeper) inside D means penalty corner anymore?

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Saina Nehwal wins first set 21-4. That took roughly 10 minutes.
11-8 to Nehwal in second set. The score doesn't reflect the dominance.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Idiotic dumb Stupid desis yelling Saina's name while game is going on!! This is bad for the player! she needs the concentration! They should cheer in between and not when she is playing!!
Somebody from the Badminton federation needs to teach that group of Desis the decorum of watching the game!!

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
20-12 for Saina!!
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Hammertime! Saina wins 21-4, 21-14. Only in the second set she had to shift gears.
Saina has the domineering presence of a champion, it was like a cat toying with a mouse.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
What you would rather have does not put food/ house/decent education into the mouths of 490 families. Those 490 families have to make sacrifices which we would rather close our eyes to for the sake of exactly what. Take any half decent sportsperson in India, at the age of 14-15 when they have no idea whether the kids have a shot, the first sacrifice 99% (even Sachin, Koneru Humpy) made was to stop their education at 10th/12th and spend the parents retirement and other siblings nests like water for training, for competetions and the pay off is for max only 1 in 100.SBajwa wrote:Good!!! going by shooting team!!
and where will you employ these "half-hearted" engineers/doctors? Do you know how big sports industry is world wide?by Viraksha
I would support a person becoming a engineer/doctor even if his "calling" is somewhere else. The families and the society are not yet equipped enough to handle failure. 490 half-hearted engineers are any day much better than 490 wasted lives for showing something in d*ck measuring contests and scams like olympics/CWG.
Diversification is the need of the hour at this time., We need to have more sportsmen/women, journalists (worldwide), Environmentalists, Accountants, architects, pilots, mechanics, qualified/educated electricians/plumbers, etc. Most of the graduated Indian engineers do not have practical skills to become a electrician/plumber.
I would rather have people with good practical knowledge than half-hearted doctors/engineers.

Thanks. I hope the coaches adjust their own team tally accordingly for the other boxers, to prevent our stronger medal contenders from being affected in their bouts.Prasant wrote:Suraj, the official tally is not known to the boxer, which is why your own team keeps a tally.
