The 2012 Olympics Thread
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
yihan is very deceptive and efficient...does a lot of damage without seeming to be very mobile...but today looked a bit out of sorts in the 1st set. must be giving her max in the 2nd set...hope Li's fitness holds up....if she manages it we have a potential #1 in future.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Paddy is a smart fighter so Devendro will have to use some brains against him ... Paddy looked quite solid.

Also people on many occasions we are ousted by the number 1 seeds in the games.
As they say if you want to be a champ, you have to take out the champ

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
^^ Am still a bit concerned about How the Fudge was the score only 4-3 at end of round 1 for Devendro? It looked pretty massive difference within first 2 minutes itself!!
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
btw, we have already passed this years olympics by my rules.

true. lucky draws only take you so far. you need to tackle the incumbent tiger to rule the forest. every champion in the past has done it.

^^ Am really scared to think that next opponent of Devendro is a local ( irish).
Really scared how the scoring will be in that match and the Stalker match of Manoj given the crowd support for the local and already dodgy judging system and blatant partiality on display ( like in 2 cases for India with opposing verdicts)

well enjoy the flesh while it lasts.
I have no idea why in athletics men wear VIP banian and form fitting shorts while women need to wear skimpy bra-tops and v-cut jangi

“In June, we had a preparatory camp in Ireland, Devendro had a three-round bout against Paddy Barnes, who won bronze at the Beijing Olympics. For the first two rounds, he completely dominated, and I was slightly worried that he would get angry if I told him to try boxing a little more defensively in the third round. But he did as I told, and his movement was so good that Barnes couldn’t touch him.”

Manoj Kumar fight is at 9:30 pm London time.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Sum ji, justified fears. I saw the bout, and the things that really irked/scared me, was that one boxer so totally dominated the bout, and yet the scores were too close for comfort.
And leave that aside, how many times do you have to be floored before a countdown is initiated? Devendro handed this guy a can of asswhoop, floored him twice, and only the third time did the ref treat it as a knockdown.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
^^ Really strange that the tension should be more about the scoring than how the fight is actually happening. But thats what this has been turned into, atleast in this edition of the olympics due to lots of farcical results. Guess they need to bring back the older system of live scroes being displayed so that chances of mischief are less.
Sangwan's match ( against a Chinese opponent) would have been in some time from now if only he hadnt been robbed of his win and am sure it would have been as delightful as the Devendro match since Sangwan really did look like being in top form

^^ Btw whatever happened to Cuba?
They used to have 4-5 golds sewn up in every oly boxing tourney and now tough to see even one ( other than the Cuban coach coming out with each Indian boxer
). Wonder why this rapid decline of the Americas ( US and Cuban teams)?

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
We have 3 medals now. One more Gold + any medal at least could be considered a successful Olympics display from the Indian contingent IMHO. Right now, it doesn't compare to the Beijing games where we had a Gold.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
^^ But we have a lot more people who got closer to medals than Beijing.... In Beijing, the only 3 who did well got the medals and there was no one else even close to a medal. Here, lots have done well to even qualify for finals etc.
Maybe, this gradual improvement in standards might bear fruit in later Oly ( Like the Chinese waves wherein 4-5 get into all finals and final winner is a Chinese with no one firm favourite)
IMHO of course

yihang was devastated. the winner Li is having a breakthrough year - she will toast their #2 and #3 for sure in short order. the pecking order is undergoing change. time for Saina to train even harder.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
btw some of these women cyclists have amazing trim rafaleish physiques... in terms of vo2max I suppose cyclists, middle and long distance runners, rowers and x-country skiers form the elite of the pack in aerobic capacity.
sadly with even a basic carbon fibre consumer level bike costing 1.5L+ , and velodromes needed this shall remain a cheen/gora sport for now. turd world nations wont even get a look in.

the OG models are likely 5L+ and custom adjusted to each rider.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Amateur boxing scoring is flawed and does not reward the consistently better/more aggressive boxer subjectively.
The points are awarded objectively for a clean punch. A clean punch is a punch delivered above the belt into the body or the head. A clean punch also has to involve contact of the knuckles (marked with a white patch on the glove for the judges to spot it). Punches against the hand does not count. So if a boxer keeps his guard up and the other boxer lands a barrage of blows on the hands it still does not count.
Combine this with electronic scoring and you will end up with a lot of legit clean punches not getting recorded. Each of the 5 judges has 2 buttons, one for each player. Every time there is a punch landed, if the judges think a clean punch was landed they press the button for the boxer delivering the punch. However at least 3 of the judges need to press the button within a second of each other for the boxer to get a point. Btw, counting does not result in any point loss for the boxer on the deck.
Professional boxing has 12 rounds and fitness/stamina comes into play and it's not as fast paced as you often see in amateur matches, so judges have more time to score subjectively.

Few more years and mostly, 80% of the oly sports will become like TT/Badminton where it is a China 1-2-3 or in worst case 1-2 with 3 being donated to a lucky country
