btw where is TSP in these olympics. usually they put up a sturdy pindi chana and gosht fed boxer or two who would get into the later rounds and sometimes get a medal even.
seems noticeably absent from any event worthy of note this time (prolly a good thing because we know the one activity TSP is known for)

HMG must have leaned hard on them to be in good books for olympics.

interestingly, the chini who was at #2 at 8km has dropped behind. must be tactics to burn out the other athletes by starting H&D duels. irfan still within 2 sec of leader. if he has something in the tank come 18km + he is in with a chance. the other 2 desis have fallen way behind.

amazing @12k there is the leader 4 secs ahead, then 9 people within same second, and then Irfan a second behind...the depth of competition is murderous in any event here.

The weather may be making it more competitive. I recall seeing racewalking in Beijing and it was a bit more strung out because the heat and humidity was killing the racewalkers. Some became so disoriented that they were carded for having their feet off ground and DQed, including the Australian girl who was leading and was just about to enter the stadium. That caused the Chini behind her to win.

Singha: I would not call our tennis performance a let down. I would blame the particular party - Bhupathi/Bopanna here. They led to two non-optimal MD teams and a non-optimal XD team, since Sania normally partners Hesh these days, including when they won French open. Paes and Sania both prefer on the forehand court; they had to compromise and put Sania there this time.

Don't know who came up with the brilliant idea of sending Rushmi Chakravarthy who is 34 yrs old and can hardly run with Sania in Mixed Doubles...

This will be the last olympics for Paes, Bhupathi, Bopanna.... Hope Vishnu can find another player and develop into a strong doubles team. Not sure why doesn't pair with Som for doubles

Borchin is the Beijing gold medalist.

Something about racewalking puts me off. This is the perfect SDRE sport, but we've no record in it at all. I hope we'll one day see a wiry beedi-smoking fast-walking SDRE who wins at this level and promptly puts on and does a lungi dance at the finish line for the world to see.

And Irfan finishes #10 with a new national record.

Interesting stuff about Borchin from wiki
He met Viktor Chegin, a prominent Olympic-level coach in the region, in 2004 and began practising with his training group. The year after he was the runner-up in the junior 10 km walk in the national championships.[2] However, he received a year-long ban from competition soon after, lasting from June 2005 to 2006, after he failed an in-competition drugs test for the banned stimulant ephedrine.

A week prior to the 2008 Summer Olympics, his coach Viktor Chegin admitted that Borchin and fellow Russian walker Vladimir Kanaykin had failed an out-of-competition test in April that year, testing positive for the blood-booster EPO.[6] However, he dismissed the claims, saying he had not given a positive test and he not trained with or spoken to any of the other Russian walkers. Borchin was allowed to compete and won the gold medal in the 20 km race at the Olympics.[7][8] It was not explained why Borchin was allowed to compete – in spite the admittance of a positive test by the Russian Athletics Federation, he did not received a doping ban and was allowed to keep his medal and continue racing.[9]
Unforunately the odds are very good that the Chinis and goras are doped to the gills out of competition. We cannot compete with that just by having one inspired fella breaking the national record on the big stage.

yeah. one would think we would do well in it. but then again, walking with an extensial purpose is different from walking for sport. like cycling, average indian puts in more miles cycling than average westerner, bar may be a dutchman.

It is not a weird rule. It is what distinguishes walking from running.

Irfan set his previous personal best of 1:22:09 while finishing 19th in the IAAF Racewalking World Cup in May 2012. He improved his personal record by 2 min and broke the national record just now - quite an extraordinary performance. He'd be a strong medal contender at AG level in 2014, but also needs at least one colleague to pace him during the race.

Walking I always considered a weird sport. It is almost impossible to differentiate walking and jogging. Who will watch someone for 20 km if one of his heels is always grounded?
