Women's discus final is about to start.

Just checked the world record in discus throw. Probably the only event where women's record is farther than the men's! EDIT: it is due to the difference in weight of the discus. Men 2 kg, women 1 kg.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discus_throw

apparently men throw heavier discuss.

Only one of the Chinese qualified with the 63m minimum (which took that woman 3 tries), which Poonia easily hit in one throw. The other one (Ma) was one of the remaining finishers to make up the 12 finalists. Lets see if she can amp up her game in the final. At least we have an AG standard competitor here.

62.42 in first attempt by Poonia. Puts her at #6.

She'd need to break the 64.8x national record by some distance to medal, at the current rate.

62.42, should be in the middle of the table. Didn't she have a running feud with somebody?

More than 65 would be a far stretch for her, given that her personal best is in the 64m range. But a good show should pave the way forward.

wow, yifeng shot a 67 !

yes 64.76 is KP's PR.

now at least 66+ needed for medal hope. seems like we would have to continously upward revise as the finals go on !

She stepped out intentionally on her second attempt since she wasn't happy with the throw.

Now everybody would go for the broke in their third or fourth attempt onwards. Scary level of competition already.

Poonia's so called 'feud' with Samuels should not be given such importance through that word. Here's what happened - Dani was the CWG best thrower in the run up to CWG 2010. She suffered loss of form in the months leading to it, and backs out of the event citing 'pollution / terrorism / personal safety', in short everything except showing she had any guts, and the Aussies backed her by trashing Delhi. Poonia proceeds to fight and win gold, and then rightfully trashtalks Dani with the gold medal around her neck. The Aussies get miffed and suggest a winner takes all 1-1 competition in Australia to determine who is the best. Poonia gives them the finger, to which they reply that she was the one who backed out :)
