Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
What went wrong with his ear? In the replay it appears Sushil's mouth was on it when he had him down and he signalled to his ear. I hope he didn't bite him.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
They get to challenge by throwing in their color in the middle of the game. No post match protests.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
I really doubt he would have bit him (with all that experience behind him), though from that replay it can be construed as though he did.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread

First Indian to win medal in consecutive Olympics!!
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
And the Japanese guy looks very agile and good technically.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
The Indians in the crowd started celebrating as if he won the Gold...!! Bravo Sunil !
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
ok i got that wrong. i thought match was over at 3-0. when is the final IST?
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
So the ear biting thing is out right? It is now being shown as an official victory on the olympic sight.
The finals are at 2:03PM UTC. I am going to sleep now, but continue the anti-jinxing.
Hope he conjure up some magic to get a gold.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Sunil has met the Jap in the past. Got destroyed in that match
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Interesting matchup in the final.
Sushil Kumar:
OG 2008 Bronze
CWG 2010 Gold
Worlds gold 2010
Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu
AG 2010 Gold
Worlds silver 2011
Sushil had a weak 2011 due to injury and form issues, when Yonemitsu came into prominence. Let's see if they're a good match now in 2012.
No post match protests. This is wrestling - people get bitten, break bones, black eyes and worse.

steve redgrave interview this morning - basically UK sports has really seriously invested in coaching and facilities and boosted the top 10 guys into the top 5, and the top 20 into the top 10 and so on. they have under performed in athletics and swimming, but have done really well overall
they think they can sustain the funding for Rio but aren't really sure. cameron says he will... but then lets see how that goes

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
^^^ Seems like the funding for the Olympics was matched by an increased funding for grass roots and champion level sports facilities, coaching et al.
On the other hand, we have Suresh Kalmadi.
Folks, its not that we are behind the world leaders.....it is that we are doing inefficient activities causing us to stay backward.
Its something like (OT, but) what Nokia and RIM's business strategies look like today. Behind, and will not join the android bandwagon to catch up. Samsung on the other hand (someone compared them to China somewhere..Raja Bose IIRC) has great strategy. No HnD loss in being a catcher upper...but will follow the guru and follow him well.
We need to put down our heads and work damned hard across all the boards, on well trodden paths.
Sports strategy, with the Amru sports complex is part of that. Why not copy an existing model successfully.

Great wrestle to come back from behind in the 3rd round. Jai Hind!!
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
^^ Well, to keep up anti-jinx, didnt watch the match and Sushil is now in the finals
But, somehow am unable to keep myself from watching the finals despite all the will-power. Might just succumb and end up watching it. Hope the jinx gods smile down on me and allow this allowance.
Btw, was watching a flyweight finals in boxing and have to say that the current scoring system needs to go. The Thia boxer was virtually neck to neck with the Chinese World. 1 through 2 bouts but was trailing by 2-3 points. However, he pumelled the Chinese in round 3 and the Chinese hardly hit back and was more keen on running away from the Thai and the final result of the round: 7-6 in favour of the Chinese. WTF???
The whole arena erupted in boos and were only cheering when the weeping Thai raised his hand to thank the crowd. He was absolutely distraught and couldnt believe it. Reminded me of the Indians in the ring being stunned by the results

China is not following the successful model. As long as there is democracy in India, no one can do to my child what I see Chinese coaches do to those poor children. Gold medals be damned. Either win it the right way or don't worry about it is my policy. Sports are supposed to be for fun and fitness. There is way too much honour and dignity unnecessarily associated with it.mahadevbhu wrote: Samsung on the other hand (someone compared them to China somewhere..Raja Bose IIRC) has great strategy. Sushil was beaten by Yone 3-0 during the 2nd of the qualifying match 6 months ago, but again then Sushil was carrying shoulder injury.Suraj wrote:

This was followed by a Hercules-like act as he suddenly stood up with the Kazakh hanging on his shoulders.
It probably was the defining moment for the Indian contingent's challenge at the biggest sporting spectacle. An Indian's show of strength at the world stage.

Perfect, well said. There is way too much stress on the outcomes. Statistically, speaking there are very very few top spots for coming out a champion and making a good living. The cunning SDREs are always good at sorting out probability of what it means to be involved in sports and never loose sight of the fact that one has to hold a day job at the end of the day. So, it is best suited for college kids or people who have a regular job that indulges them or insanely rich who doesn't have to worry.archan wrote: China is not following the successful model. Here is sample of what olympians do (not just the glamorous few)... This the kind of support in TFTA nation for olympians (not champions - but for would be champions). Well SDREs are going to take safe bet.

Runners can land valuable endorsement deals. Discus throwers, not so much. Most need to toil outside of sports to earn their keep. Brooks, 28, has been a jack of all trades, working jobs in construction, retail and hospitality (he's been a bartender and a bouncer).
When not hefting weights, the 36-year old hoists cans, in her capacity as a garbage collector for the refuse department of the city of Leeds, according to Yahoo Sports.
Yahoo Sports says that to earn a living he now cleans offices and school rooms, training on his shift breaks. A facilities management company has offered him paid leave, so he can devote more time to training.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
key is economic development and a culture that celebrates other sports than cricket...

a rising economy has enabled both government and private firms to start funding our sporting medals quest. Says Dhume: “In the 16 months leading up to the London games, India’s government allocated about $48 million to its Olympic effort. Steel baron Lakshmi Mittal’s Mittal Champions Trust chipped in with another $10 million. Other wealthy Indians who have done their bit to support the cause include Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries and Rashesh Shah of Edelweiss Capital. The most prominent private entity here is Olympic Gold Quest, a non-profit launched by retired badminton star Prakash Padukone and former billiards champion Geet Sethi in 2001.” Saina Nehwal and Mary Kom are two products of this quest.
Second, there is now a big enough catchment area for talent that private wealth or institutional support can fund. While doomsayers have been busy trying to focus on India’s poverty and using that as the reason for predicting permanent failure, the counter-intuitive fact is this: in an India of 1,200 million people there will be at least 400 million who will not be undernourished, or so poverty stricken that they cannot catch someone’s eye with real talent in school or college, especially when sports facilities improve. A 400 million India Shining story is larger than the pool available in almost any country except China.
One, there will be enough money coming from wealthy individuals, the state and private non-profits to back Indian medal prospects from here on. So individual events is where we will make our name in Olympics 2016 or later. So players who apply themselves to a task have a reasonable chance of winning.
Two, in team events, success will be few and far between, and it can happen only if private long-term funding is used to build a long-term team that lives together, eats together and plays together. This applies as much to cricket or hockey or football. There is little chance of that happening in the near future.
Three, if the state wants to back winners, it must pour its money into individuals, not teams.

the biggest non-surprise...rift valley highland warriors take out the 1-2-3-4 in mens marathon.
they mostly always have the edge after 35km when most people start fading out.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
yadav ram singh finished 78th in 2:30:06
our NR is 2:12 set by Shivnath singh way back in 1978 , 35 yrs ago - goes to show nobody has been seriously pursing this line of work, hard as it is.
our next oldest NR is the 3000m steeplechase record of Gopal Saini set in 1981. didnt he win AG gold in delhi 1982 ?
bahadur prasad holds the NR in 1500m and 5000m set in 1995 and 1992.
just goes to show how weak our pipeline is. there is no pipeline. here and there some brilliant individuals emerge but are helpless due to the tactical pack attacks of the more pipeline oriented teams in matchplay competition.
on women side PT Usha 400m hurdles OG time , 3000m Molly chacko in 1994 and Marathon record of vally satyabhama in 1995 still stand.

Congrats to Sushil too anyway, for all the hard work. No mean silver either.
Wish we had one more bronze in shooting events and a few more in boxing to get to the double digit figure, which was within reach this time. Overall happy with medal tally as a bystander.
