There is nothing to be happy about on this day. It is a grim reminder that even after 65+ years, we the citizens of the country, continue to be ruled by a foreign government, the only difference is that white sahibs has been replaced by the brown ones. When I used to see a cop car in US i knew that was help. When I see the same here I know it is trouble. For this, we the people are to be blamed for there is a wise saying "Praja to Raja uske anusar hi milta hain". The citizens just went to sleep mode after the revolution and got divided into so many identities - northy, southy, brahmin, bhoomihar, begali, madrasi etc etc etc .... - that we failed to elect representatives who were above these lines and whose main line was the Indian identity - like govt under under Atalji. Heck when we got the chance we did not even allow him a second term. Instead we kept on bringing the family dynasty - like the arab states - back to the sit. The day we have a governance model - across states and unions - which will treat us as CITIZENS not SUBJECTS is the day of true independence. The day I can see the flag flying atop an Indian mission in a foreign country and my heart fills up with a sense of safety and comfort will be the day of true Independence. Till that time the blood and sacrifices made by all those brave son and daughters seems to be waste.......

Depends on which national tricolor you're talking about. The first Indian flag was a tricolor of red, yellow and green with lots of stars, sun and moon and blue vande mataram written in the middle in devanagiri. This was hoisted in Calcutta in 1906 (by whom, no one has recorded). Shortly after this, a second one was raised in Stuttgart in 1907 by Madam Cama, who doesn't appear in your list above. Her flag was orange/yellow/green with stars, sun, moon and blue vande mataram on it.

Then there was the white/green/red striped flag with blue spinning wheel designed by Pingala Venkaiyya with design ideas from Gandhi, which was flown in 1921 in a Congress meeting.

After Jalianwala Bagh incident, a new Swaraj flag (orange, white, green stripes with blue spinning wheel in the middle) was designed by P. Venkaiyya again and this version was hoisted 13th April 1923 by Cong. workers in Nagpur in memory of Jallianwala Bagh. This flag was later adopted by Cong. party in 1931 officially.

Azad Hind flag was also orange, white, green stripes, but had a yellow bengal tiger in the middle and this was hoisted by them in Manipur during WW-II.

Right before India became independent, a committee consisting of Nehru, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, C. Rajagopalachari, Sarojini Naidu, B.R. Ambedkar and Rajendra Prasad decided to adopt Congress party flag as India's flag, but the committee wanted to make the flag more secular, so out with the spinning wheel and in with the Ashok Chakra. S. Radhakrishnan claimed the Ashok Chakra was more dharmic, but Nehru said it was because it made the flag look symmetrical unlike the spinning wheel. Gandhi wasn't very happy with this change because spinning wheel idea was his baby (In fact, he wrote words to the effect of "if you choose the Ashok chakra, I refuse to salute such a flag"), but he later learned to live with it. Nehru showed the new design off at the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947 and presented two models to the people present and everyone approved, so by the time August 15th 1947 rolled about, the present day Indian flag was ready to be flown.

So, in answer to your original question, it could be any one of the above people. My money is on Madam Cama

The National Tricolor was first hoisted by Jawaharla Nehru at "India Gate" not at Lal Kila as per popular perception.

Greetings to all Indians on this memorable day,wherever they are on the planet! However,today is not happy for those of us living in India.I switched the TV on this morning and was greeted by the face and voice of the shameless,sanctimonious,self-righteous,selfish humbug who has been,the nurturer,the preserver, the midwife of the most corrupt regime ever to rule our land.Sitting atop his dungheap of scam,sleaze and slime,the mendicant of snake-oil the "good,clean,honourable" dr.Singh is such a figure of ridicule in India today,aslep at the wheel of his drifting ship of state,visionless,rudderless and heading for the rocks, that one paper today said that "anyone",even Rahul G...and I add,even Rahul G's pet dog or cat or donkey,if he has one,would be a better bet to lead the nation than the principal paymaster of the corrupt...yes the PM is the man who decides upon his cabinet and the buck stops with him.

So let us pray on this day of Independence,for the removal of this parasitic regime,even worse than our erstwhile colonial masters ,and that more honest men and women enter the House and put the nation back on track to strive to achieve the dream of our forefathers who so valiantly fought for our freedom.The AH and Baba R movements today show that a second freedom struggle is with us,and we must join hands and support such movements in all their laudable ventures to rid us of the corrupt neo-colonial parasites like "Singh & Co." and bring about a better ,more honest and just society.Jai Hind!
