That's quite simplistic, the way you put it. Its a step in the right direction no doubt. He derided sectarianism, and he has embraced all of Western civilization which considers itself a combination of old Greco-Roman heritage, Christianity and post-medieval "enlightenment". So that's two steps in the right direction, IMHO.RoyG wrote:Left Islam and became an evangelical christian and he talks about shadows on the wall. This official didn't do anything wrong. An Indonesian official is facing calls for his resignation after it emerged he divorced a teenager by text message following four days of marriage.
Aceng Fikri, the elected head of Garut in West Java province, has publicly apologised amid the outcry. Hundreds protested against him on Tuesday.
Mr Fikri, 40, is married with three children and took the 17-year-old as his second wife in a Muslim ceremony.
He divorced her after reportedly discovering she was not a virgin.![]()
"I would like to apologise to the public if women feel harassed, even though I didn't mean to harass anyone," Mr Fikri said.
He added that he was sorry "even though what I did was appropriately based on Shariah [law]".![]()
Although not recognised in Indonesian law, unrecorded marriages, including religious ones, are common in the country. The marriage law says that women who are 16 can marry. For the liberal chest-beaters - legality is not universal.
Fani Octora was 17 years old and still in high school when she married Mr Fikri in a Muslim ceremony in July that was not officially registered, correspondents say.
She reported him to local police on Monday, accusing him of domestic violence.
Mr Fikri told local media that Ms Octora was not a virgin and "doesn't meet the promised specifications so I sent her back".![]()
He also says she signed an agreement to keep her silence on the matter and he paid her 40 million rupiah ($4,200, £2,600).
Protesters gathered at the Garut municipal building on Tuesday to demand Mr Fikri's removal from office, saying his actions were disrespectful of women.![]()
Correspondents say there is no indication that the police will charge him.
Under local laws, the elected leader of a region can be sacked only under a complicated process that can take up to two months.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to look into the case.
aws criminalising blasphemy are set to be struck down soon in the Netherlands and may disappear in Ireland, but rising tensions in economically battered Greece seem to be reviving pressure to prosecute offences against God.Blasphemy appears more frequently in headlines from the Muslim world, where countries such as Pakistan or Saudi Arabia readily punish perceived critics of Islam, but a lesser known trend is a general movement in Europe away from such laws.Cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed and works of art seen as offensive to Islam have angered many Muslims in Europe and beyond in recent years, sometimes sparking violent protests. Yet attacks on religion no longer seem to shock most Europeans. In the Netherlands, scrapping a 1932 blasphemy law became an issue last year after a court undermined it by acquitting far-right leader Geert Wilders on charges of inciting hatred against Muslims.Ireland opened a constitutional convention last Saturday to consider a major reform of the political system, including removal of a blasphemy law only passed in 2009.
Ten Islamist groups issued a statement accusing protesters of “sabotaging” the country by resorting to violence. The coalition demanded that the “legitimately elected President” put an end to the violent protests to ensure security and stability.
“Non-peaceful protests are an offence to Egypt, but Egyptians will defend the legitimacy of the President and preserve the gains of our great revolution.” {look who is talking about non-peaceful protests ! Muslim Brotherhood has extraordinary experience in marrying violence, terror and politics. Egypt will now descend into civil war.}
There were signs that the Islamists may be flirting dangerously with a plan to mount a witch-hunt in the wake of the protests. Prosecutor General Talaat Ibrahim Abdallah has proposed an investigation of a complaint which accuses prominent politicians of spying and plotting the overthrow of the government.
Hamed Sadeq, a lawyer, in his complaint has accused Amr Moussa, Hamdeen Sabahi and Mohamed ElBaradei — all former presidential candidates — of espionage and sedition. All three are facing allegations of participating in a “Zionist plot” of fomenting internal crises in Egypt, following Mr. Moussa’s meeting with Tzipi Livni, former Israeli Foreign Minister. {This is how takfiri Islamism works. Accuse anybody of treason and kill them}
Mr. Morsy’s critics point out that the protesters have been miffed by the supposed lacunae in the draft constitution.
They say the proposed national charter does not guarantee insulation of individual liberties from religious intervention — a hot button issue in a society where, for instance, large number of men and women are opposed to the imposition of a dress code. {Having voted for MB and the more radical Salafist Al Nour party, what else did the Egyptians expect ?}
Some Islamist groups also oppose open sale of alcohol in Egypt, which for many may be necessary to keep the foreign tourist traffic going. Mr. Morsy’s opponents also allege that the draft constitution concentrates too many powers in the office of the President. Some other criticise it for being weak in protecting freedom of expression.

Sara Ege used a stick to beat seven-year-old Yaseen “like a dog” if he couldn’t recite passages from the Islamic text.
The beatings were so brutal that the boy died from his injuries, and his mother tried to burn the body to destroy the evidence, Cardiff Crown Court was told.
Yaseen was originally thought to have died in the house fire. But a post-mortem examination showed Mrs Ege had been beating and abusing her little boy in the months leading up to his murder.
In a video recording of her interview with police, Mrs Ege told them: “I was trying to teach him the Koran.
“I was getting more and more frustrated. If he didn’t read it properly I would be very angry — I would hit him.
“We had a high target. I wanted him to learn 35 pages in three months.
“I promised him a new bike if he could do it. But Yaseen wasn’t very good — after a year of practice he had only learnt a chapter.”
The court heard Mrs Ege, 32, a university graduate, and her husband, Yousuf, had enrolled Yaseen in advanced classes at their local mosque.
They wanted him to become a hafiz — an Islamic term for someone who memorises the Koran.
Yaseen was coming to the end of a three-month trial period at the mosque, and Ege was keen for him to impress his Imam.
Mrs Ege told officers: “I was getting all this bad stuff in my head, like I couldn’t concentrate, I was getting angry too much, I would shout at Yaseen all the time.”
She also hit him with a hammer, a rolling pin and a slipper, as well as repeatedly punching him, the court heard.
She would allegedly lock him in the shed, tie him to a door, and force him to do press-ups.
In the months after Yaseen’s death, Mrs Ege told a doctor she been told to kill him by Shaitan — an Islamic name for the devil, the court was told.
She said: “I have become so harsh, I even killed my own son.”
Her husband, 38, denies causing or allowing the death of a child by not stopping the beatings.
The trial continues.

Can you believe it? A Chinese–made shoe is holding hostage a population of over 1.4 million in Srinagar. It began in Central Kashmir’s Magam area. On 28 November, someone saw a white sports shoe with the name of the last Caliph (Hazrat Ali) printed on it. A close examination of the shoe, however, threw up a hint of mischief: on the right-side of the toe, the name ‘Ali’ was hand-written with a black marker and didn’t look like a company mark. Soon, men, children and women gathered on the streets. Protests ensued. The shoe was held high in the procession while the demonstrators called for an end to “hurting” Muslim “sensibilities.”
Even before the crowd from this protest had returned home, a new mob gathered around 30 kilometers away at Srinagar’s Zadibal-Nowhatta neighbourhood where Shia and Sunni communities live together but their union is often marred by frictions from time to time. For years, youngsters of this area have been stone-pelting the armed forces for atrocities and the clampdown on Azadi-demanding protests, but today they were stone pelting each other’s houses, breaking windowpanes and disfiguring fence walls. Some people say pro-India PDP’s Shia leader had spoken against the first three Caliphs of Islam during his Moharram speech (a few days before the shoe-incident) that angered the majority Sunni population. Others say the Shia youth wanted to enforce a strike in the Sunni area of Nowhatta which was resisted by the shopkeepers triggering stone pelting between the other communities. The result: the police and the paramilitary CRPF are enforcing a curfew for several days now; seizing some youth in nocturnal raids, and even the parents of those running away to escape the Khakis. Ghulam Qadir Sheikh, the father of a youth who was detained in one such raid, says he was dealt with like a hardcore criminal in the police station. Adding to the absurd chaos, Kashmir’s Divisional Commissioner Asghar Samoon, as quoted in the local media, explained that he had recommended in the past too that parents of minors (allegedly involved in stone pelting) must be punished. Meanwhile representatives of around 30 religious bodies (both Sunni and Shi’ites) are now trying to calm the angry communities.
A friend jokingly says if this is what a single Chinese shoe can do, imagine the magnitude of global unrest if the whole of China were unleashed on the world.
Ruptures between Shi’ites and Sunnis aren’t new. They had developed immediately after the Prophet Muhammad’s death in 632 AD. There was no agreement on his immediate successor. Sunnis recognise the first four Caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar Farooq, Usman Ghani and lastly, Ali Murtaza) as his rightful successors; the Shi’ites believes the prophet nominated his son-in-law, Ali. Since then, sentiments over the matter continued to boil right through to the modern times, sometime pushing countries to the verge of civil war. But in the case of Kashmir, Shi’ites and Sunnis rarely have such turbulent history. There is a greater realisation among many regarding who will actually benefit from such a sectarian fight which I’ve already mentioned in my previous blog post.
Such protests, however, also throw up questions (so far avoided and unanswered too). Was this shoe-protest a justifiable rage? How will a violent protest in Srinagar force the shoe-manufacturer (in case it’s established that a mischief was played at the manufacturing level) in China to stop such production. Or how will it force some individual or a group not to play this malafide act again? They must be already giggling somewhere after having successfully triggered clashes in Srinagar over a shoe.
This incident also reminds me of the June 2010 anti-West and anti-India protest in Kashmir. Young men in hundreds in the same neighbourhood carried a blue underwear on a wooden stick, after spotting on it, a sketch of a building which looked like the Al-Aqsa Mosque of Palestine. Without any thorough examination, the underwear enraged them. Soon they blamed the West for “hurting Muslim sensibilities” and clashed with the police and the CRPF. The under wear protest soon faded after it was established that it never carried images of any Islamic worship place. The blue underwear flouted as a placard had in fact sketches of buildings that resembled London’s Big Ben and Saint Paul’s Cathedral and several other places.
This is a clear cut case of islamophobia.RamaY wrote:^ didn't you read? The believer said it is work of Shaitan. So it has nothing to do with Islam.
That's wrong. There was definitely a thorough examination.JE Menon wrote:Without any thorough examination, the underwear enraged them.

by that logic, as long as any non-Islamic super-power exists anywhere in the world - nowadays - when frontiers are not limited to what can be reached on horseback and camelback, Muslim anger at anyone else's power or independent existence will keep on generating ALQ version X.
If you think back on this, the greatest anger at such "other superpower" should have been directed at the British in the 19th and 20th century. In spite of a few confrontations, all of the muslim world - quickly, very quickly, got hand in gloves with the British superpower, at a time when the centre of the Islamic world, ideologically speaking [not commercially which was Ottomania] was in the Gulf, which wa snot being threatened by any other superpower.
In fact through the rise and decline of the British superpowerdom, there has been surprisingly little confrontation between Islamic jihad and British super-powerism. The only problem zone was AFG, but there are reasons for that. Even there, the Brits quickly worked out a mutually beneficial equation, through the inclusion of the Afghans in BIA and thereby transfer of military tech [the many known instances of Brit knowledge of removal of hardware from BIA into Pakhtun hands].
The so-called anger - is not just about existence of superpowers, it is a fundamental imperialist drive based on two fundamental logics:
(a) Islam needs a framework of civilization based on physical dominance hierarchies, which means labour intensive, and hence Islam is most comfortable in typically low-tech agrarian setting. Technological advances in production systems blurs the boundaries of physical inputs, and hence jeopardizes the primitive/animalistic domiannce submission patterns outlined in the theology.
(b) Islam's tendency is therefore to try and continuously expand territorially, and capture fertile or well-irrigated lands for agriculture. Simultaneously, while it is not completely dominant, and alternative economies exist that produce stuff that the Islamists cannot produce or cannot afford to produce without jeopardizing and challenging the simpler/primitive biological dominance model - Islam likes to control the exchange market for such commodities. This adds another urgency angle to the imperialist expansion agenda - to take over trade routes beween more advanced technologies.
By enforcing dominance on the exchange process - if nothing else other than by creating nuisance value - Islam funds its own demographic and territorial expansion agenda, while taking a cut from non-Muslim growth and affecting non-Muslim economies. Its all part of the ulterior expansion agenda while trying to keep civilization at that particular primitive level where the biological dominance controls everything.
Thus imperialism is inherent in the Islamic, and it is independent of the existence of any superpower or not. Yes an existence of a superpower helps in mobilization - but a British type seems not to provide the right excuses - but it is not necessary. Mere existence of something lootable would be good enough.
However, I would also like to point out that - the Islamic is very much - very much, bought-able. Bribes, money, women will fracture any semblance of any unity there - not permanently, but for the right amount of time, which can be used to bulldoze the institutions. One advantage of the primitive psychology inherent in the theology also makes it particularly vulnerable to overwhelming crushing, genocidal defeat. The submission theology prepares auto-justification in the mind to give up on defeat with atrocities that the Islamic practices on others. It is a sign to them that their supreme has abandoned them or lost.
why the recent SMSes and the following mayhem unleashed by the faith fool and their sekular supporters is proof enough.A friend jokingly says if this is what a single Chinese shoe can do, imagine the magnitude of global unrest if the whole of China were unleashed on the world.

The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has commissioned an opinion poll to find out what Germans think about Muslims. Generally, the results are regarded as "catastrophic".
Respondents to the poll were asked to choose which of 21 statements they were offered about Islam that most closely reflected their opinion. 83% of them think that Islam is associated with impairing women's rights, 77% thought Islam was a literalist religion; 70% said Islam is associated with religious fanaticism and radicalism. A significant part of Germany's population also believes that Islam is ready for violence (64%), hatred (60%), active missionary activity (56%), and striving for political influence (56%). Only 13% of respondents associate Islam with love for neighbours; 12% - with charity; 7% - with openness and tolerance.
These results do not differ much from a similar poll conducted in May 2006, although that poll was taken at the height of the Mohammed cartoons controversy.
The high level of mistrust in Islam is reflected in other questions. For example, in 2006, 55% of respondents answered yes to the question "Do you think that serious conflicts will appear between the Western Christian culture and the Arab Muslim culture in the future?" Today there are 44% people who think so. In 2006 and today a quarter of respondents believe that such serious conflicts exist even now.
Another question concerned the term "a clash of civilizations". In 2006 46% of Germans were sure that such a clash was taking place; in 2010 this number grew to 58%; it has now reduced to 43%. However, these people still represent a simple majority, as only 34% responded negatively to the question.
36% of German respondents think that Christianity and Islam can live peacefully together. However, 53% think that serious conflicts between these two religions will develop.
...
As for relations between Muslims and non-Muslims in Germany, respondents have pessimistic attitudes. 48% respondents answered positively to the question "Do you think tension in relations with Muslims will grow in Germany in the nearest future and should we be afraid of it?" Only 29% of people see no threat.
The majority of Germans don't support policies of accommodating demands for censorship or special privilege. Only 27% of respondents think that for protecting peace there should be a ban on anything that might insult or provoke Muslims. 52% argued against this.
