Hundreds of people today offered funeral-in-absentia or ‘gaibana nimaz-e-jinaza’ for Mumbai terror attack convict Ajmal Kasab who was hanged in Pune’s Yerwada Jail on Wednesday.
Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani had appealed to people to hold his funeral prayers. Kasab’s funeral was offered today afternoon at the city’s Barzulla area. The people also offered funeral-in-absentia for Palestinians killed in Israeli air strikes on Gaza.
A resident of the Barzulla neighbourhood said people from two mosques gathered at the local Eidgah to offer prayers for Palestinians and Kasab.
Kasab’s hanging was largely ignored by the mainstream and separatist leadership in Kashmir who chose to remain silent over the incident.
Through a video message released on Thursday evening, Geelani had appealed to the people to protest against the Israeli air strikes on Gaza after the Friday congregational prayers.
“Funeral prayers should be held for (Palestinian) martyrs and Kasab should also be remembered. Nimaz-e-Jinaza (funeral prayers) should also be offered to him,” Geelani said in the video message.
In May 2011, Geelani had led hundreds of people in the city’s Batamaloo neighbourhood to offer funeral prayers for Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, days after he was killed in a US raid in Pakistan.

The Guardian reports that Sanal Edamaruku visited Our Lady of Velankanni in Mumbai, where a statue of Jesus Christ had been leaking water – and spoiled the worshipper’s excitement by declaring that the condensation was coming merely coming from a leaky pipe in a wall behind the statute.

Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the Catholic archbishop of Mumbai, has reportedly told Edamaruku that the charges will be dropped if he publicly apologizes. But Edamaruku rejected that offer, claiming he did nothing wrong.

Lok Sabha Passed a bill which expanded definition of "Terrorist Act". It includes:
Offences that threaten the country's economic security,
The amendments also seek to include procurement of weapons, raising funds for terrorist activities and counterfeiting Indian currency under the definition of a "terrorist act."
The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, which was passed by voice vote, also extends the period of ban on an organisation from two years to five years.
Asaduddin Owaisi (MIM) opposed the Bill claiming it was more draconian than the erstwhile Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA).
So a Law which effectively targets anyone indulging in anti-national activities is "Draconian"

So anyone that harks getting the economy back to the Nehruvian rate of growth is an economic terrorist too. Anyone who puts in place policies that cut down growth can be classed as putting Economic security in peril..or an Anna who demands removal of all Foregin Companies from India..officialdom in India at times feels comfortable in keeping certain ambiguity in their legal systems. That always bounces back badly at some point of time.

Police shoot down key suspects in Sub-Inspector murder case
Police shoot down key suspects in Sub-Inspector murder case
Police on Friday shot dead two men, both key suspects in the October 27 murder of police Sub-Inspector, after they escaped from custody and allegedly attacked a police team that tried to stop them at check post, police said.
Prabhu and Bharathi, named as key accused in the killing of Alwin Sudhan, a young Sub-Inspector, were killed in what police described as an “encounter” at Theethankottai in Sivaganga district, on Friday night.
According to the police, the two had to be taken for remand extension in a judicial magistrate’s court. A team from the Armed Reserve Police, Sivaganga district, had come to Madurai Central Prison and taken custody of the duo. At around 12.30 p.m., when the police vehicle approached the Lake View Road here, Prabhu, complained of chest pain. When the police team was about to rush him to a nearby hospital, the two accused escaped assaulting the constables.
A constable, Chitravelu is convalescing in the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. The Anna Nagar police in Madurai City registered a case and a general alert was sounded across the districts for them.
Meanwhile, a highly placed source confirmed that Prabhu and Bharathi, spotted travelling on a two-wheeler, attacked a police team when they refused to stop at a check post near Theethankottai.
After a hot chase, they were shot by the police in Sivaganga district, the source said.
The bodies of the duo were being brought to Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital.
On October 30, a gang that included Prabhu and others had allegedly killed Alwin Sudhan when the Maruthu Pandiyar Guru Puja was under way. The young police officer, who had joined service less than three months before, died on the spot. After a fortnight, Prabhu and two of his accomplices surrendered before a court in Tirupur.
They were later remanded in judicial custody and lodged in Madurai prison.
Re: Internal Security Watch
Comparing Madurai incident to terror act is not comparable, one is law and lack of will. May be if POTA was present mr Headley and his Bollywood associates would have been arrested earlier and a 26/11 prevented which under general setup he never even registered in the Anti terror radar and some bollywood personalities happyily wined and dined him while he steadfastly persued his mission.

I hate a$$holes like Mahesh bhatt so much. Name like Hindus but actually not. Acting all the time against Hindus while other gullible people feel they must be telling the truth cause they cant be against Hindus as they are Hindus themselves etc. Just 2-3 days back Mahesh bhatt's discussion came up somewhere and a friend of mine (very well educated) says the same thing- 'Why do you think he is anti-Hindu? He is a Hindu himself!' I said no and she says- 'Come on! He is named Mahesh and his daughter is named Puja!'
Apparently Bhatt Saab wanted to name you Mohammed when you were born?
Yeah, that's what Mr Mahesh Bhatt wanted to call me. But then my anglo-Indian mother put her foot down on the insistence of her Maharastrian neighbours arguing that he should keep his notions of secularism for some other occasion. And besides, if Mr Bhatt thinks of himself as a good Muslim he should've treated all his children equally.
But Bhatt Saab's mom was Muslim?
She was. But I had no interaction with that side of my family.
What attracted you to Headley?
Common interests. A good sense of humour. He was well-travelled. He had a large view of the world. I am basically a loner. I don't make friends easily.
What made you befriend Headley?
Pataa nahin. Aapke saath kyon jamaa hai mera? (why do I vibe with you). I make friends instinctively. Duniya kya bolti had bhaad mei jaye. (to hell with what the world thinks). Mr Headley offered good friendship.
It was both a buddy-buddy thing where we discussed girls and guns, and a mentor-pupil relationship. He struck me as an action guy, a swashbuckeler. I saw him as an American adventurer who had seen The Godfather repeatedly. So had I. I could never guess what his real intentions were.
In the book you describe your first impressions of Mr Headley in poetic terms? You wax eloquently on his eyes?
Please don't give it a homo-erotic interpretation. There was no such thing. The most striking thing about Mr Headley when anyone met him for the first time were his mismatched eyes. Looking back that too was a measure of his multiple personality disorder.
This guy was one of his kind. The first thing that hit anyone were his eyes. And aren't the eyes the window to the soul? There was a contradiction to his personality. He loved children and dogs. But then he did what he did.

India to erect floating fence along Sir Creek border with Pakistan - Economic Times
India to erect floating fence along Sir Creek border with Pakistan - Economic Times
NEW DELHI: India will soon erect a 'floating fence', anchored by submerged metallic meshes, along the disputed Sir Creek border area with Pakistan.
The 96-km strip in the Rann of Kutch marshes is notorious for illegal crossings and smuggling of narcotics and arms and is patrolled round-the-clock by BSF marine commandos.
Top sources involved in the project said after mulling over various options, the Union Home Ministry entrusted the CPWD and NBCC to install an all-weather 'gabion box' fence along the stretch.
While the National Buildings Construction Corporation will erect the fence on about 75 km of the watery strip, the Central Public Works Department has already started work in the rest of the area, sources said.
A 'gabion box' is a meshed metallic box-like structure with hexagonal wire nettings and it is lowered down the bed of the water body after big stones are filled inside it.
"The fence would be erected on the 'gabion boxes' which will have the usual all-weather concertina wires and poles. The Sir Creek area is characteristic with shallow and slushy water and these boxes would be the best material to be sunk under water considering the difficulty of the terrain to execute such a difficult project," an official privy to the development said.
The 'gabion box' is a regular technology used for flood water control and prevention of rock breaking along coasts by the impact of the saline ocean water.
India and Pakistan are continuously in talks with regard to the maritime boundary dispute in this area.
Sources said the fence would be erected, despite the ongoing talks, in order to safeguard Indian security interest.
Officials said a number of other plans, including erecting a pontoon fence, were also discussed with engineering experts but the Home Ministry found the 'gabion box' technique apt for this project.
The entire project, sources said, would have an estimated cost of about Rs 1,200 crore and the financial sanctions in this regard would be granted soon to the executing agencies.
The Sir Creek area, including a particular stretch called 'harami nala', vulnerable for infiltration, will also be covered by the fencing.
A number of instances of the Border Security Force apprehending Pakistani fishermen and trawlers are reported from the Sir Creek area regularly and hence the border guarding force has raised and deployed a special unit called 'crocodile' commandos in the marshy territory.

Curbing terrorism, not rights violations, should be top priority: Jurists
Curbing terrorism, and not human rights violations, should be the top priority of countries, said a resolution adopted by the International Council of Jurists (ICJ) at the conclusion of a two-day conference on terrorism here on Sunday. According to ICJ President Adish C. Aggarwala and member S. Prabakaran, the delegates and participants from all over India and abroad expressed deep concern over the ever-increasing spate of terrorist attacks across the globe. They said India and many other civilised nations were passing through a critical juncture and had witnessed an unprecedented spate of terrorist attacks. “Terrorism is a global problem and internationally collaborated efforts are needed to tackle it. In these extraordinary times, the law is expected to take the lead and to strengthen national efforts to boost our security. It must rise to the occasion and make it conducive to an integrated effort to curb terrorism,” they said.
The resolution said: “We also appeal to the judiciary all over the world to curb terrorism with an iron hand, and not to show any leniency whatsoever to the perpetrators of such acts of violence. Curbing terrorism, and not human rights violations, should be the first priority considering the fact that human lives have to be protected from the onslaught of terrorism. We condemn terrorism in all forms and manifestations, perpetrated in the name of religion, language, region and political ideology. We condemn in the strongest possible terms attempts by state and non-state actors to carry out activities detrimental to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nation states.”
The resolution urged all nations to hand over fugitives so that they would face the due process of law in their own countries or in the countries where they carried out the heinous acts of terrorism.
“The basic objectives of human rights are to protect and safeguard human lives, which is the most basic and fundamental human right. Any action violative of this basic right cannot be allowed to undermine the war against terrorism. We, therefore, resolve to curb terrorism, at all costs and call upon the nations to enforce the anti-terror laws in letter and in spirit.”
According to Mr. Aggarwala, Pakistan Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohd. Chaudhury had to skip the conference owing to unavoidable reasons, apparently a fallout of the recent execution of Ajmal Kasab, the terrorist involved in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, though he had initially expressed his willingness to attend.

Electing judges not feasible in India: Justice Chandrachud
Here in the name of public accountability, which clearly is incorrect as pointed out in the article, politics is being played with Justice system.
Not sure if this comes directly under here but defense of Justice system and personnel is also one of the prime importance, as also securing independence of Judges and Justices in particular.Justice Chandrachud was reacting to a suggestion by the director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies G Mohan Gopal that several states in the US had a system of electing judges. Gopal, speaking at a seminar on ‘Federalism, The Indian Experience’ had given the view while stressing the need for judges to be accountable to people.
..
“I do not think a judge should have an electorate. The only constituency of judges is the Constitution of India,” he said.

For example,

Once you become a judge in India, you are basically God. No one has the power to remove you. You sit in the same bench/area for a long long time until you are promoted. What it breeds is corruption and authoritarianism. The common man has no recourse to any other avenue. The judges today have absolutely no oversight mechanism. So the collegium of appointing judges consists of judges only, guess what will happen to the next generation and then to the next generation.Justice Ranganath Mishra was appointed to head an enquiry commission into the 1984 anti Sikh pogrom. Ironically, it was at the possible intervention of Sonia Gandhi, as Tavleen chronicles. Of course not one murderer was ever identified by Justice Mishra in his report. What did happen though was that Justice Mishra became a Congress MP many years later. Mani Shankar Aiyar officially joined Congress party in 1989. But he began doing Rajiv Gandhi’s bidding from 1985 itself, while still in service. Ajit Jogi was able to quit the IAS within hours (normally it takes months) to join and contest on Congress ticket.

Bihar woman executed in public for extra-marital affair
A woman in Bihar was executed in public after a local village panchayat (village administrative body) handed her a “death sentence” for having alleged extra-marital affair with a local youth.
Soon after the matter became public, the village panchayat tried the victim at its court, and after finding her guilty of “illicit relationship”, sentenced her to death. Subsequently, she was beaten to death at the village court in the presence of local villagers as no one dared to protest. “She was executed in public but no one dared to oppose”, a local villager who witnessed the horrible scene told the local media.
Locals said the victim was an educated woman with a Maulvi degree (equivalent to intermediate degree) who had been helping the impoverished women by running a self-help group for them. Her group was imparting the poor women training in sewing and weaving to make them self-reliant.

Seeing no names mentioned, I am willing to bet the following.
a) this was a Sharia- Panchayat court- yes they operate in India. and they pass many judgements which MSM does not want to report, and this was not just beaten but a public stoning.
Media reports said the local Tiyarpara village panchayat took a serious notice of the “offence” after it was informed that the 32-year-old Bibi Shahzadi, a mother of three, was having extra-marital affair with a local youth. The victim’s husband works in a factory in Ludhiana (Punjab).

MHA glare on hate channels: Govt puts on notice 24 foreign TV channels showing anti-India content after intel alert
The government has red-flagged Indian preacher Zakir Naik-run Peace TV which is aired in India.
The government's move to block the channels follows a spate of communal incidents in Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad, Assam, Srinagar, Mumbai and other parts of India in recent months following motivated reports.
However, the authorities find it difficult to jam all channels. Encouraged by this lack of control and easily available in the border areas and even elsewhere, these channels are brought into homes via cable TV.
Oh, read it all...Most hate channels focus on news or religious affairs. Pakistani TV channels identified as being stridently anti-India include QTV, Madani TV, ARY TV, the official broadcaster PTV, PTV Home, PTV World, Geo TV, Dawn, Express, Waqat, Noor TV, Hadi TV, Aaj, Filmax and STV. They are available in Jammu Kashmir and Punjab.
Other TV channels that are illegally down-linked into India and are known to spew malicious content include Peace TV (Dubai), Saudi TV, TV Maldives, NTV (Bangladesh), XYZ TV, Nepal TV, Kantipur (Nepal), Ahmedia Channel (UK-based) and Bhutan Broadcasting Service. These channels are watched in the north-eastern states and in areas bordering Nepal.
Sources said channels like QTV and Indian preacher Zakir Naik-run Peace TV are also available through cable TV operators in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Many cable operators are unaware that it is illegal to air these channels.

Gujarat govt finds getting rid of excess power difficult
from brofessor Badri Raina
How, may i ask the brofessor? The only power surplus state in the country. And industry is queuing to setup plants in state. With the weaknesses of Modi’s development plank now exposed, the Gujarat Chief Minister is resorting to tried and tested majoritarian communalism
Gujarat govt finds getting rid of excess power difficult
The title of this article is apt for Modi's opponents. "Insecure After all"Did you notice that Narendra Modi is back to his old tricks? Out of thin air, and with no context of any kind, he has chosen to insinuate that the Congress means to install Ahmed Patel as Chief Minister of Gujarat. And not just Ahmed Patel but “Ahmed Mian Patel.” Do recall his erstwhile sallies with “Mian Musharraf” and “James Michael Lyngdoh.” The idea patently is to warn the Gujarati voter that should the Congress come to power, the State would be saddled with a Muslim chief executive.

When his opponents has resorted to minority communalism, has he got any choice?Mr. Modi’s greatly hyped and advertised bravado as “vikash purush” may not be quite moving to the bulk of the Gujarat electorate this time around. Nor, as it turns out, does Gujarat seem to have been as free of corrupt crony capitalism as Modispeak would have us believe.
Hence, his unprincipled and legally questionable recourse to tried and tested majoritarian communalism.
Good. Stick with that 47% Mr. Modi will be chief minister after this elections too.Remarkably, we always seem to forget that this claim to majoritarian hegemony excludes some 47 or so per cent of Gujaratis who have consistently voted against him — a fact that remains cannily buried as far as public commentary and discourse are concerned.
Funny. His opponents are conceding defeat even before the elections are over. The paradox is that, given the 24X7 hype over Mr. Modi, if he drops even a single seat or stays where he is the argument may be fuelled that the limits of his politics have been reached. Indeed, that conclusion may become more rampant among the BJP’s inner circles than among merely those opposed to Mr. Modi’s brand of politics. In that event, the late Madhav Singh Solanki, who once garnered 140 seats in the Gujarat Assembly, may remain the record holder beyond Mr. Modi’s prowess.

This generation of Indians which spent its youth under Nehru's shadow -- this generation has to pass away into the sunset before things begun to get better for India. All the deranged worthies haunting this land -- from Khushwant Singh and Kuldip Nayyar to Katju -- belong to this time period. They have managed to infect some from the next generation too, but the damage is minimal.

Despite all the high rhetoric they all from JLN* down defraud the state and loot when possible. If not possible then make it possible.

CNN coverage on the supposedly weeping Jesus statue in Mumbai. The brazen Christian Church Mullahcracy is offering to withdraw the FIR if he apologizes for debunking their charlatan/superstitious beliefs. Apparently the weeping Jesus water is dirty and from a leaking pipe and poses severe health hazard for those consuming it.

Thamim Ansari detained under NSA
Thamim Ansari, the suspect who allegedly videographed vital defence installations at the behest of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has been detained under the National Security Act. Sleuths of the ‘Q’ Branch CID served the detention order on Ansari at the Tiruchi central prison hours ahead of his remand extension, police sources said on Friday.
Video clippings
Acting on a tip-off from the Intelligence Bureau, the State police arrested Ansari in September last when he was proceeding to the Tiruchi airport to take a flight to Colombo. He was in possession of CDs that contained video clippings of sensitive defence establishments and ports in Tamil Nadu.
Interrogation of the suspect revealed that he was working for a couple of agents hired by a diplomat attached to the Pakistani High Commission in Sri Lanka.
After investigation corroborated with the statements of Ansari, police registered a case against Amir Zubai Siddiqui, Counsellor (Visa), Pakistan High Commission, Colombo, and two others, the sources said.
“He was shooting videos on the pretext of making a movie titled ‘Power of India’. Besides the visuals of vital installations, there were some other visuals pertaining to certain cruel acts,” a top police official told The Hindu .
Though it appears that the suspect was operating for at least a year, it is not clear as to the number of CD consignments he might have passed on to his handlers – Haji and Shaji in Colombo.
“Since he was running losses in his business ventures, Ansari took these assignments. The agencies interested in the video clippings promised to make his import/export business profitable in Sri Lanka.”
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) was likely to take over investigation in the case soon.
“We have to go beyond Ansari and expose the identity of the agencies that sponsored his activities,” the official said, adding that the NSA detention would extend to a period of at least one year.

Re: Internal Security Watch
I have read about this idea of NIA taking over the case. But has NIA even successfully prosecuted on single case and got the accused prison terms? I see lots of cases going over to NIA (including counterfeit currency circulation etc.). But then that is the end of the storySSridhar wrote:The National Investigation Agency (NIA) was likely to take over investigation in the case soon.

Man kills sister for ‘illicit affair’, carries head to cops
Man beheads sister in public view, takes severed head to police station
How does a 29 year old become a youth? The youth, who has been identified as 29-year-old Mehtab Alam, beheaded 22-year-old Nilofer Biwi in full public view. This is the first reported instance of honour killing in West Bengal.
Beheading? I thought it is a middle eastern practice will not get into India. Just the other day a mother killed her son. Now a brother beheading his sister.Sword in hand, Mehtab reached the house where Nilofer was staying. Incidentally, Firoz and his brother were not present there. Mehtab dragged Nilofer out of the house as the crowd gathered. When Firoz’s sister-in-law, Saboo, tried to resist Mehtab, he chopped off her hand.
Amidst the gathered crowd, Mehtab then beheaded her sister. With the severed head in his hand, Mehtab started walking through the crowded streets to the police station, a kilometre away. He reportedly warned the people not to “disturb him”.

Memes going viral. It ain't always the cute gangnam styles that go viral only. Genocidal totalatarian ideologies like wahabism and communism have demo-ed this in the past.
The mems may not like these memes but what can they do, hain ji?
What troubles me is the blind eye by the media. This and the UP stoning episode should've gone viral among the kafir community. I hear kannur is finally reorganizing to fight against the jihadism proving that despite lack of media spotlight, word does go around. And that darwinism is alive and well, still.

NIA is a dead end. Its PC's way of ensuring communal harmony. Its like Roach Motel:"Once things check in nothing checks out" It MHA way of ensuring nothing ever happens to any of their 'sensitive" cases.

MHA glare on hate channels: Govt puts on notice 24 foreign TV channels showing anti-India content after intel alert
Digitisation could be a solution as it will be easy to track what is being shown by a cable operator. But this will take some time. Officials said digitisation will not be completed before 2014. In other words people in the border areas, where the problem of illegal channels is acute, could continue to watch these channels for at least two years even though the digitisation rollout goes according to present plans.
Officials said the problem of anti-India channels pertains mainly to cable operators and not other platforms like DTH. There are over 60,000 registered cable operators in the country and it is not easy to monitor them, said officials.
They were of the view that localised blocking of a specified TV channel using a terrestrial transmitter is neither feasible nor a financially viable option. Secondly, although it is technically possible to block a particular channel on a pan India basis by disturbing, or jamming the downlink frequency of a particular TV channel, "such actions are not internationally acceptable,"sources said.
Indian viewers are drawn to the illegally shown TV channels because of the entertainment programmes they show. For instance, Pakistan's official broadcaster PTV has a dedicated following for its highly popular drama and comedy shows.

Astounding logic used by our favorite ex-spook ( now seems to be a full time INC blogger):
Narendra Modi is part asset, part liability
Narendra Modi is part asset, part liability
As part of my study of the growth and evolution of the Indian Mujahideen [ Images ] post-2007, I have been regularly monitoring the feelings and sentiments of our Muslim fellow-citizens with the help of local observers in whose judgement and veracity I have confidence and my interlocutors in the intelligence community.
It is my assessment that Muslim anger and resentment against Modi continues to be strong and hurting, particularly among the youth. This is so not only in Gujarat, but also in the rest of India.
Public memory in the majority community might have forgotten the atrocities committed against our Muslim fellow-citizens of Gujarat in 2002 in retaliation for the massacre of Hindu pilgrims in Godhra, but Muslim public memory has not forgotten it.
The feeling of alienation of the Muslims continues to be as strong as ever though they may not openly express it any longer.
It may be true that the Muslims of Gujarat too have economically prospered under Modi's stewardship. But the grievous hurt suffered to their feelings of dignity and self-respect will not diminish so long as he remains the chief minister.
