Gender row athlete Pinki Pramanik charged with rape
Police in India say they have formally charged gender row athlete Pinki Pramanik with rape, after a complaint by a live-in partner.
They say medical tests also confirm the athlete is male - earlier tests had proved inconclusive.
Pramanik maintains she is female and the case against her is "a conspiracy".
The runner, who was arrested in June and freed on bail a month later, won a number of medals for India six years ago, including four golds.
"The medical report of Pinki Pramanik suggests that the athlete is male," police said in a chargesheet submitted in court in the town of Barasat in West Bengal state.
They said the athlete is also charged with cheating and threatening her then partner, a woman.

Medical experts doubt Pinki Pramanik can rape
KOLKATA: Medical experts on Tuesday questioned the police move to slap rape charges on Pinki Pramanik after the former Asian Games gold medallist was declared a male on the basis of a DNA test report.
Pinki's medical report, they pointed out, says that the athlete suffers from Disorder of Sexual Development (DSD). A DSD patient, say experts, cannot be termed a male - despite an XY chromosome combination, as Pinki's DNA report has confirmed-because such patients are incapable of performing a sexual act.
It would be unfair to accuse Pinki of rape, said genetic medicine expert Kaushik Mondol, a member of the medical panel investigating the case. "Even though the report says Pinki is chromosomally a male, it doesn't conclude that Pinki is a man... it says the athlete suffers from DSD. DSD patients can't be identified as men," said Mondol, adding they were incapable of penetrative sex.

Germany defeats India 3-2 in Sultan Johor cup junior hockey.
JOHOR BARU: Reigning junior world champions Germany added the Sultan of Johor Cup to their collection when they defeated India 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium.
The tenacious Germans were worthy winners although India were the favourites as they had made the final unbeaten. Germany, on the other hand, had lost to Malaysia and India in the preliminary round.
Germany, who reached the final on goal difference, played a fast and clinical game to subdue the Indians.
Jonas Gomoll gave Germany the lead in the 11th minute with a drag-flick goal high into the net from a penalty corner.
Hardworking India were rewarded for their efforts in the 24th minute when Satbir Singh deflected a cross from Sukhmanjit Singh into goal for the equaliser.
The Germans then made good their second penalty corner in the 30th minute when Joshua Delarber scored with a drag-flick as well.
Germany started aggressively in the second half and easily picked up their third goal in the 49th minute – thanks to a stagnant Indian defence line.
Niklas Wellen took the ball to the right and centred for an unmarked Florian Adrians, who easily slotted the ball past India goalkeeper Sushant Trkey.
Akashdeep Singh managed to pull a goal back in the 66th minute but Germany held on for a winning debut in the tournament.
Australia clinched third place by defeating Pakistan 3-2 in extra time. The match ended 2-2 in regulation time and, five minutes into the extra time, Australia’s Jayshaan Randhawa netted the golden goal from a penalty corner set-piece.
The Aussies, who finished second last year, found the net in the ninth minute when Cassey Hammond ran into the D and had only Pakistan goalkeeper Mahzar Abbas in front of him. He duly tucked the ball away for the opening goal.
Two minutes later, the Australians took a firm grip on the match when skipper Dylan Wotherspoon ran into the D from the left and beat Mahzar with an angled shot.
Pakistan were more adventurous in the second half and Mohamed Irfan reduced the deficit in the 49th minute.
Pakistan found the equaliser in the 66th minute through Rizwan Ali to force the game into extra-time.
The Aussies netted the golden goal five minutes into extra-time to claim third place.

New Delhi: Lalitha Polipalli Prasad (49kg) continued his winning streak at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Yerevan, Armenia on Monday (3 Dec’12). The 17 year old cemented his place in the quarter-finals of the championship with another scintillating performance.
Prasad, Boys Sports Company prodigy at the Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune, is now just a win away from ensuring himself at least a bronze medal finish from the tournament. Pitted against Issac Pinto of Ecuador, Prasad a multiple junior national champion, dominated the game, with his accurate jabs and power hooks from the start.
The brittle defence of Pinto could hardy withstand the relentless pounding laid on him by the Indian boxer. An aggressive opening gave him a three point advantage (4-1) in the first round.
From there on, he put the pedal to the metal; the hapless 17 year old Ecuadorian engaged as a mere formality for the last six minutes of the bout.
Prasad won a place in the round of eight with a 15-5 win on points. In the quarter-finals on Tuesday (4 Dec’12) he is slated to go head-to-head against Japanese boxer Kosie Tanaka.
Sandeep Sharma (75kg) a bronze medallist at the 2010 International Invitational tournament in Kazakhstan 2010 also made his way into the quarter-finals of the Championship with a resounding victory over European Junior Championships bronze medallist Berika Mhechadze of Georgia. He completely outclassed Berika and was outstanding all throughout the bout winning all three rounds against his European opponent. He won on points 17-8. In the quarter-finals he would battle against Uzbek boxer Azizjon Mamatov in an attempt to qualify for the medal rounds.
The Indian boxers shined through the evening session of play late on Sunday night (2 Dec’12) as well. Silver medallist at the 2012 Tammer International Tournament, Dheeraj Singh (52kg) overhauled his opponent Roman Formanek of Slovakia in spectacular fashion. The recently turned 18 year old, took full advantage of his height and long reaching arms to break the defence of Formanek.
A 12-3 lead after round two, saw him record an impressive victory and sail through to the next round of the championship. He won on points 20-5 (2-1, 10-2 and 8-2). The Indian boxer is now set to face Tural Ahmadov of Azerbaijan in the pre-quarter finals of the fly weight category later today. Super heavy weight boxer Narender (+91) upstaged Hussein Iashaish from Jordan in what was an outstanding battle.
There was not much separating the two boxers and both matched each other punch for punch, but Narender took a crucial one point lead in the first round (3-2). Iashaish though, levelled things in the second round winning it 5-4. With the scores knotted at seven all both fighters went all out in the final round. In the end though, it was Narender who edged past the Jordanian boxer with a score of 12-11. He now takes on 2010 European Junior Championship bronze medallist Ivan Kabatov of Russia on Tuesday (4 Dec’12).

Indian Hockey team full back defense of V.R Raghunath, SV Sunil and Rupinderpal Singh is the best we have had in recent times. Even the new goal keeper P.T Rao (backup of sunil Chhetri who is injured) is really good.
With Sardara Singh, Harbir Singh in mid field it is the best mid field. Sardara singh has been nominated to get FIH hockey of the year award.
Forwards of Yuvraj Walmiki, Chandi, Shivendra Singh and rest are fine!!
But our weakness was full back which seem to have been resolved by the Coach.
Next match is semi-finals against Australia at Melbourne in about 12 hours (4:00 pm Melbourne time). This will be tough!!
The best india has ever finished in Champions Trophy is Bronze Medal (3rd). If we can get pass that it will be good.
Defense is always the key!!!!

MUMBAI, India — On a recent Saturday morning, nearly 20 players from the Mumbai Gladiators football team went through their weekly drills and scrimmage at the popular Juhu Beach, in the suburbs north of this sprawling city of 14 million.Dressed in red T-shirts and black shorts, the players engaged in a 90-minute practice that resembled a touch football game among friends rather than a gathering of professionals chasing dreams of fame and fortune. Elderly people and families out for walks appeared confused as they passed by. One couple approached the men to ask what game they were playing.
Investors Include Warner
Under Whelan’s frenzied leadership, the league has raised $8.5 million from investors, including Kurt Warner, the retired N.F.L. quarterback, and Brandon Chillar, a former St. Louis Ram and Green Bay Packer of Indian descent, and he is confident others investors will come on board. To keep costs to a minimum, the league stopped paying its players in the off-season and, in the first season, dispensed with stadiums, tickets, tailgating and other trappings of the American football experience.Whelan and his partners are not the first to try to promote Western sports in India, where most schools and colleges give short shrift to athletics. The N.B.A. opened an office in Mumbai last year and has sent stars like Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol to the country to promote the game. It recently signed a new broadcast deal to have its games shown in the country. The N.F.L. is still trying to secure a television deal, but it sells a subscription-based online package for fans who want to watch games.
For the TV product to be sustainable you need an around-the-year multiple-product offering,” he said. Whelan and others at the E.F.L.I. are betting that the weak play will be overshadowed by the stories off the field. To that end, they have hired Ed Goren and Sandy Grossman, who produced N.F.L. games for decades. Grossman said the league planned to add more pageantry to its broadcasts and was talking with executives in Bollywood, which is famous for producing movies featuring lavish dance scenes. For now, he is focused on teaching his staff where to point the cameras. “I had to talk to a lot of different crews who had never seen football before,” he said. But “the guys playing, what they lack in quality of play, they make up in enthusiasm.” Many players found the sport by chance. Rahul Kelaskar, a 24-year-old wide receiver for the Gladiators, was recruited when Whelan spotted him working at a hotel in Mumbai. Kelaskar is 6 feet 5 inches but weighs 125 pounds, earning him the nickname Sticks from his coaches

Increasing number of non-sporting activities at the venue – including cultural programmes – interrupts the training programmes charted out by many coaches to hundreds of national and State-level athletes at the stadium. Add to that the lack of basic facilities, their woes are complete.
“The frequency of non-sporting activities has increased this year,” says senior coach V R Beedu, who has been training athletes here for the last 30 years. Beedu led a protest against the renting out of the stadium by the Department of Youth Services and Sports to non-sporting activities, as well as the poor state of amenities at the stadium last week.
Lack of basic facilities, like proper toilets and gymnasium, adds to the athletes’ woes. A tour around the stadium gives a pathetic picture of stinking rest rooms with broken doors and damaged taps, while the gym presents a sorry state. Dumbbells and barbells rust in contrast to the picture one would expect at a top training centre. On the field, the protective net for hammer and discus throw too is in bad shape.
One of the musts for such a venue is proper changing rooms, but without doors and basic amenities it is a struggle for girls who come for training after school hours. The athletics fraternity is also worried about huge rental amount charged for hosting sports events, in marked contrast to the good old days.

IOC’s surprise decision, wrestling dropped from 2020 Olympics

http://post.jagran.com/iocs-surprise-de ... 1360674972
IOC leaders have dropped wrestling for the 2020 Games in a surprise decision to scrap one of the oldest sports on the Olympic programme. The IOC executive board decided on Tuesday to retain modern pentathlon- the event considered most at risk- and remove wrestling instead from its list of core sports.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
It hasn't been dropped; it has been demoted to one of the sports who have to 'prove' themselves as worthy of inclusion for 2020. Wrestling will be judged against baseball/softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu, as one of the sports to be chosen for inclusion along with the standard events: athletics (track and field, marathons), rowing, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, swimming, modern pentathlon, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing and volleyball.
This is quite frankly an idiotic decision. There are plenty of sports that should have been demoted instead - modern pentathlon (what's that ?), table tennis (5 golds for China, almost every major team other than Japan/Korea comprised of Chinese emigres) or canoeing. It'll probably be overturned in due course once the IOC gets battered by a storm of criticism.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
How about dropping the Synchronized Swimming? What about Judo, Handball, Takenwondo, fencing and triathlon.
Wrestling should be part of the original sports group Athletics, Boxing, equestrian, weightlifting and any such single competitor.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
The IOC voted to drop wrestling from the list of core sports because wrestling's world body (FILA) didn't bother to lobby to ensure that their importance was explicitly stated. They just thought 'oh, this is wrestling - it has been part of even the ancient Olympics, and has been a fixture of every modern Olympics. Surely IOC can't be that dumb'. They bet wrong - the IOC was indeed THAT dumb.
This will probably be overturned. The US and Russia both have a significant history in wrestling. Sports like synch swimming are not core sports, as wrestling was. The fundamental issue here is that wrestling was removed from the list of core sports. It should be one, without question. If they want to prune entries from the core list, both modern pentathlon and TT are candidates.

TT no; the rest can be dropped
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Saina Nehwal makes the All England semis. Knocked out the last Chini girl Wang Shixian - first time since 1996 that no Chinese are in the semis. Apparently will play Korean Sung Ji Hyun for a place in the final . Edited later: She plays the Thai teenage prodigy; the Korean plays Tine Baun in the other semi. Saina beat Tine at the Olympics and has beat the Korean elsewhere. This is her best chance at All England.
P Kashyap lost his quarterfinal to Chen Long, while P V Sindhu faltered at the pre-quarter stage.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Saina might have won the second set if not for the cheap tactics by Wang. But she powered through in the third.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Saina lost her semifinals to the young Thai.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Saina looked somewhat overweight this time and had one knee taped up. Didnt look as fast and sharp as in the olympics.
Given her structure, weight is going to a problem vs the taller girls like wang yihan or pv sindhu.
