In terms of growth and revenue Mickey seems to be chugging along fine - its one of those companies which doesn't depend on the CEO too much (unlike Fruit Co.). When Billu dada left there were no ripples unlike what happened when Mahdi copped his plea. Chacha is another company which looks like it will shape up to be a non CEO-dependent company. ChipZ falls in the same category. The characteristic of such companies is they have strong SVP/division heads who can run things without looking upwards for guidance. Such companies are also the ones which survive though they may not hog the headlines that often. Others like FruitCo which flash and burn brightly also die out quickly. FB might fall in that category given the idiotically blind reverence I see amongst their so-called "M-Team" for Zuck.

Isn't the servers an important part of the software and services for IBM? IBM used to throw in the software if you buy the hardware. Once you have the hardware and the software, the services guys were not far behind. IBM contributed majorly to Sun's woes. After the dot com bust, there were no takers for the expensive sun servers. They preferred the cheap Linux hardware offered by IBM bundled with their software. Sun tried to sell linux servers too, but it didn't work.

There is good parallel to IBM selling PC business to Lenovo. At that time it was quite a controversial decision and some people have made a career out of it saying it wasn't a great decision. Those folks are currently, I believe, disgraced for that view.

Lenevo is itching to get into enterprise server business and it's time has come. Margins on server business are not anywhere close to those of storage, networking and services. It is potentially an ahead of curve decision. And the view that hardware gives entry to services/software is old/unproven and I think not applicable anymore.

That's too bad, I enjoyed his posts, particularly in the NaMo thread and he added value overall. Years ago GeorgeJ called the Strat Forum the "hot air" forum and I generally avoid it.
I would say Phunwa, L&M, Camera, and Nukkad dhaagas are my watering holes.

And it comes with charger and cable in the price as well.

For this price, it also has quad-band GSM, bluetooth, MP3 playback and OLED display. Interesting thing is how this thing was built. Case is snap-together plastic, everything is soldered on with no connectors and there are only two major IC chips on the board, one does most of the work of the device and the other is a power amp chip.

the screen looks even poor and smaller than the old nokia 1110 types. expectations have risen and atleast in india there are tens of millions of better traded in phones that pass down the food chain to those looking to move up or get in on the phone thing.

they will have to find someplace really poor that does not permit used phone imports.

china itself has no market for such a phone...at their level of per capita income nobody will buy it.

I have a lot of movies and documentaries in my collection. It's all in avi format with mpeg and mp3.
What's the most modern format out there? I think most streaming devices are moving out of avi.

Many people (even those owning an Iphone or S4 or 920) have expressed desire to buy phones at this price point. It is used as a back-up phone (since most current Smart-phones have amazing battery life). There are other use cases like keeping one in car, one in your holiday home, etc. Currently those backup options are quite expensive. And getting prepaid 5 euro prepaid sim is as easy as buying 2 liters of milk.

To add, nobody wants to be felt or seen poor, and carrying an al-cheapo phone advertises you as poor. Reason why Nano is not successful, the same reason applies above.

One thing I learnt, people *will* pay for a gizmo that will make them look rich or suave or better. Goes for all arty-farty-lefty types too.
