As said before, the best camera is the one you have with you and a phone is what most people have. It is a good thing that cameras in smart phones are getting better, no one is saying otherwise. There is a place for better compact mirror-less cameras and are in fact selling. Those sales are increasing at least 10-12% a year in North America. Not as fast as tablets and smart phones, but still respectable for a mature device.
Even though the image quality is on par with traditional DSLRs, mirrorless cameras don't have as many moving parts and almost always come in smaller, lighter bodies. Because they swap lenses, they're just as versatile as those DSLRs for all kinds of photography. Sounds great, right? You'd think that American camera shoppers would be clamoring for something like this — but they're not.
Across the Pacific, consumers are embracing compact system-based cameras. The mirrorless segment is gaining huge ground in Japan, where it makes up about 10% of the camera market, according to the Camera & Imaging Products Association. Of the 1.8 million cameras shipped in the Americas (not just the USA) in April, a measly 38,843 of them were mirrorless — 2% of the total.
And how much of the compact mirrorless camera sales are poaching on DSLR sales becoz like you said it offers a solution in-between that of a regular P&S and a DSLR?
KB says that I can use my personal phone to use Good app for emails/webex sessions. I am not sure if this eat my talk minutes? Does good audio/webex sessions goes on data services charges or talk minute charges? anyone used this kind of KB services?
^^By Good you mean Good Technologies? It will typically eat your data plan not your talk plan since its all IP based. I use Lync+Skype which uses my data plan (I have limited call but unlimited data).
japanese are always fond of anything compact. mirrorless with full sized lenses imo suffers from weight imbalance issue and if you have a proper lens , the mind yearns for a proper DLSR body to wrap the hands on ... it kind of looks like a unnatural shape to me...like a F-16 block60 trying to be a Su35.
the basic arrangement of a car with engine, pax, trunk 4 wheels has not changed in a century..so too the film and dslr shape and size of body is based on decades of human experience.

Actually why don't you ask BhairavP about his experiences with good smartphone cameras. He posted about it here some time back. Most of the 'nothing beats a standalone P&S' crowd seems to me are the ones who have never used good smartphone cameras or bothered to look at the state of the art but are solely engaged in spouting theory and opinion - that's good for hot air phorum style chai biskoot timepass but fairly useless otherwise.
^RB saar, thanks. I've used the 808 for the past year now, and am very happy using it as a "glorified P&S".. this thing has incredible IQ.And heck, it sends emails, allows me to Whatsapp, browse the Internet AND get one to one and a half days' battery life.

Pentax ka kya kiya ?
Kept a few of the hard-to-find lenses (A50/1.2, FA28/2.8, A50/2.8 Macro), sold a few of the rest at a profit, yeevil Gujju baniya that I am.
RB saar - definitely - you sending me one? . SHQ will have my head on a platter if I get a new phone - we've got a new plasma, DSLR, and car in the past year.
^^^App rais log phunwa nahin khareedenge to humara industry kaise chalega? Personally I wont buy this phone becoz its supposed to be a 5 inch screen - thats way too big for me (unless one day I become a Sammy fanboy like Mortullah )

Aare yaar, The 808 has been available for some time and I first read about it at DPR. In fact I was going to buy one unlocked to have one, but it doesn't do 1700 MHz AWS UMTS for TMO. For the photo enthusiast it is not an option because it has lousy AF/AE capability compared to a decent compact camera. And yes, I saw Bhairav's video of the belly dancer.

Arre hamare payaare, it is a 4.8" 720p screen, so you should get one. I am disappointed with Sammy, I wanted 5.6" 1080p screen!
I just bought the Canon EOS M mirror-less compact today with 18-55 STM lens. Fry's has these on sale for $399 in store only, but I paid $549 as the nearest Fry's is 120 miles from me.
Next camera/phone for me is the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. Looks very promising if you saw yesterday's key note in Londonistan.

The D7100 is great! Why not go for broke and get the D600? You know in your hear of hearts that you want one. The smooth buttery bokeh of full frame is hard to resist. It is like sax and glub jamuns at the same time, oops wrong dhaaga.

I love it, now Sammy needs to put it on their phones. Flush a S4 active down the toilet and it comes back up as WP.

Phunwa abhi nikla nahin hai ji - kis phunwa ki baat kar rahe ho? According to leaked pics, looks like a 5 incher. Anyways 4.8 or 5 inch, its way too big. If I want a small tablet I will buy one....separately - convergence of devices doesn't work when holding a tablet to your ear like an idiot.

Haamre pyaare, hum bhoth camera istimaal keya, aur mujhe pata hai kis se kam chaalana hain. Phir be, aap apne dost log se bole ke naya Nokia 1700 MHz AWS UMTS support kaare aur unlocked diya, to hum aacha review dengaye.

Camera mundi mein lagane ki liya nahi hain, aap ko pata nahi? Android ka matlab sirf phone aur tablet ki liya nahi.

Arrey babua to baal add kiye dete hain agle version main, aisi kya piraablum hai?! Tond accurate hai ki nahin bas yeh batai deo....aur kahin mijjile thoda chota to nahin bana diya...

Arrey chachu, yeh to aisi baat ho gayi - daktar kehta hai humne bahut patient dekhe hain, is liye abhi diagnosis dene ke pehle patient dekhna chod diya hai!
This is also an example of why being HW onlee or making enablers instead of end-consumer devices is a risky venture. These guys have superb technology and were innovative, fastest time to market and would have been ripe for an acquisition-based exit. And now they had to lay off 30% of their staff in one go. The Leap Motion guys hopefully are taking note of what can go wrong for them.
Many moons ago I had asked a Boeing engineer why they didn't self-power aircraft wheels with motors to avoid use of main engines to move on the ground (after all using main engines for ground maneuvering is like killing an ant with a cannon). Back then he said the weight penalty wasn't worth it. So looks like they solved the weight problem and made it feasible. Too bad I didn't patent my 'revolutionary' idea.
^^^The 50 KVA motors between the wheels needs power and in new aircraft like the 787 and A350 it can be implemented easier with it's newer electrical system.
There is a lot of work going on in the commercial aircraft industry to improve fuel efficiency. Its too bad N^3 isn't here anymore to provide us details. In the US, Boeing has a shortage of aerospace and electrical engineers. Fresh graduates with only an undergrad degree are being picked up with a starting salary of $80K. Grad degree holders and P.chaadis are picked up for significantly higher. Some reports of P.chaddi aerospace engineers with structural design background are being picked up for $200K by Boeing. Most kids are interested in IT these days or developing the next "killer app".
What do folks here think about Ubuntu Mobile/Phone OS? Here is sort of an amateurish video demoing the latest version of Ubuntu running on Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

I see that they have built up on Unity interface (which I dislike)...I guess they'll need to offer something similar to 'Siri' or 'Google Now' to compete with Android & WP ecosystem at least if not iOS!
^^^^It hits the roadblocks all new OSs today hit.....ecosystem, ecosystem, ecosystem. People get too enamoured with the technology and visuals that they forget what kills or keeps an OS. For example, whoever keeps saying GB should have just continued down the Meego path forget that it takes massive time advantage to create an ecosystem along with lots of leverage with carriers and device manufacturers. Its a hard chicken and egg problem, not to mention a super hard bizdev problem. Technology has almost nothing to do with it unless the OS is doing something fundamentally disruptive. And slapping some runtime to supports another popular OSs apps is not a solution either. As a device manufacturer or carrier why would I choose a consumer offering with your OS vs another one - what extra value proposition in terms of services, revenue, wow factor do you bring in? That's where the Firefox OS, Ubuntu Mobile, Sailfish OS all face roadblocks.
Arrey Mortu-tau, aisa sharth mat laga jisme haarne ke high chances hain! Despite wet dreams of many anal-e-cysts, WinPhone is no Zune - Mickey didn't survive for 30+ years and outlast all its compatriots by being stupid.
^^^I know. I couldn't resist having fun knowing that you would get a buzz on your phone/tablet/vibrator(err...pager ) after I posted.
Although, that map is interesting. I looked up some 2nd tier cities in desh, about 2 million pop., and there were about 3-4 tweets on other "other" OSes. Could be Windows or something else.

Except it just ends up arousing Abu Chacha's goat onlee coz the aforementioned vibrator is wired into his mush - kisi din woh aayega tumko doondhnay. Aur Paanch saal mein there may be no WinPhone - agar ishaaron ko samjho to.....
Is weekend, hamne HTC One aur Galaxy 4 se khela. Dono theekh hain, lekin Galaxy 4 ka hardware jada pasand aiya. HTC One is less cluttered UI, but screen has good contrast, but did not impress and I didn't find it to be overall better than my Note II.
Has anyone run Geekbench 2 on any of the GSM version of these phones? On my TMO Note II with stock 4.1.2 I'm getting 2010.
^^^Arrey Mortu-tau, yeh GeekBench chalane ka kya fayeda aur hardware specs se mijjile maalish karke kya fayeda jab phunwa tootay huay bail-gaddi jaisa ladkhadata hai every once in a while?
