Piglets had planned well before halal-ing their deeper than ocean birathers and TFTA Ukranians
The Pakistani government has halted mountaineering expeditions on Nanga Parbat, a day after armed militants attacked and killed 10 foreign climbers and a local guide.

A Pakistani mountaineering expert told Agence France-Presse that some 40 climbers on the mountain, the second-tallest in Pakistan and ninth-tallest in the world, have been evacuated and that no further climbs would be allowed this summer.

“Local authorities have evacuated them. They have all been informed of this incident,” Manzoor Hussain, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, told AFP. “We are reviewing the overall security situation. The fallout apparently will be serious.”

This [mountaineering] season is over for them,” Mr. Hussain added.

AFP reports that the 10 foreign climbers have been identified "as an American with dual Chinese citizenship, three Ukrainians, two Slovakians, two others from China, a Lithuanian and a climber from Nepal."
The Christian Science Monitor reported yesterday that the attack took place in the middle of the night, as several militants, dressed as members of the local paramilitary police, ambushed the base camp at the foot of Nanga Parbat. A spokesman for the banned terrorist group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) told the Monitor and other media outlets that his group claimed responsibility for the attack.

We will continue to target the foreigners until the drone strikes stop. This attack was particularly in revenge for the killing of our commander Wali-ur-Rehman. Our local Taliban faction in the area carried it out under our instructions,” TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said.

The Los Angeles Times reports that another militant group that operates in the area, Jundullah, also claimed responsibility for the attack in separate calls to the media. The Times writes that it isn't yet clear which group – if either – is responsible, and notes the claims could be a smokescreen by a third group, trying to deflect attention.
The BBC notes that because of the mountain's remoteness, the ambush – launched by up to 20 attackers – likely required a great deal of planning and preparation, not just tactically but physically as well. The BBC's M Ilyas Khan writes:

Officials in the Diamir district of Gilgit-Baltistan say the area where the gunmen struck is extremely remote and there are no roads and no means of transportation other than mules.
They say the attackers must have been well trained and well acclimatised. A lot of planning must have gone into conducting this operation. The area is a vast mountain desert, having approaches from three sides, each requiring 20 hours of walking; in practice two days of trekking.

The BBC adds that officials say the mountain's isolation should aid in the search for the gunmen, as they ought to be easy to spot from the air. Unconfirmed reports from local media claim that 37 people have been arrested so far in the investigation.

The attack is of particular concern to Pakistan's struggling tourism industry. The country's mountains were among the few regions regarded as safe from its ongoing struggle with Islamist militants. Experts told the Monitor that the attack could shatter that confidence, costing the country "billions of rupees."

“Around fifteen to twenty thousand tourists including mountaineers came to Pakistan each year during the summer season. Each one of them spends over five to six thousand dollars. The loss to Pakistan because of this attack will be in billions of rupees,” says Ghulam Nabi, a representative of Pakistan Tour Operators’ Association. “And it’s not just tourists that run away then, it also affects the foreign investor confidence." :rotfl:

Re Nanga Parbat
Here's my (somewhat defamatory) guess. Some genius ex-PA like Hamid Gul or ISI-on-contract was behind the planning/concept. They wanted to precipitate an international incident involving Umrikans near about Kerry's visit because drones are really killing the Taliban-minded literally and figuratively.

Not having eaten enough vegetables, they forgot to check who was up there exactly and instead expected the climbers to be Europeans and Americans. Found only East Europeans and Chinese. After climbing 2 days how could they climb down for next 2 days without doing anything? So decided to kill them anyway.

Leaving everyone including themselves and their ex-PA backers(or PA backers) somewhat befuddled.

What oppression, saar? Christian women are paraded naked in the West, America and particularly Hollywood, daily onlee.

Now that they also paraded in Pakistan, people are complaining?????

I protest this religious and ethnocentric bias against strategically placed Pakistan, and demand $3 billion as compensation in lost revenues for not being able to freely parade Christian women naked.
And don't forget fascist takeover of India and the 20 jillion occupation forces in Kashmir.

The cliff hangeresque halaling manoeuvre on Nanga parbat followed by the blindsiding of the Rashtriya Rifles in the valley - both contributing to the sudden ratcheting up of heat in Kashmir - can it be see as a demonstration of their current capabilites to the visiting Kerrorist ?

Chattisinghpora during Clint baba's visit (in 2000) and the 1995 abduction and halaling of six foreign tourists at the height of US meddling in Kashmir issue too should be remembered in this context.

It also fits the pattern. Remember Chattisinghpora massacre done during visit by massa to underscore "nuclear flashpoint" and when that didn't produce needed results, the scurrilous propaganda to pin it on the IA.

No explanation that assumes pakis are crude and vicious in their thinking can be implausible.

A group of three Masters students in the field of Mechatronics Engineering from National University of Sciences and technology (NUST-Numskuls Ululated by Sachin Tendulkar) did a project under the title ‘Validation of the hawk-eye system in cricket’ as the semester project for the subject ‘Digital Image Processing’ and made an interesting discovery.

Mechanotrics or whatever is the same technology that is used in water cars and is invented by the great Pakis.
Also the Haweye operator on that day was a yew and it was a conspiracy against lalaland.

Stocks plummet as Nawaz vows to put Musharraf on trial
KARACHI: Pakistani stocks dipped sharply on Monday as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told parliament of his cabinet’s plans to initiate a high treason case against former military dictator Pervez Musharraf.

“Musharraf will have to answer for his guilt before the court,” Sharif told the National Assembly.

News of the prospective trial jittered nervous investors concerned about short-term political stability, and sent the Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark share index plunging 3 per cent.

The KSE-100 index closed 650.27 points lower at 21,048.08, just slightly above the psychological 21,000-level.

But the terrorists did check the antecedents of the climbers.
There was a Chinese-American in the group that was halalled.

These bozos saw "American" and ISI probably tipped off the LET.
I am 400% sure this is an ISI-LET hit job. Then these guys probably thought that a gora meant == American since there was atleast one confirmed american over there.

Also 400% this was to tie up with the Kerry visit.

I think Sadhna has got it exactly right wrt what actually might have happened.

Net result: The attack on the Sri Lankan team has taken Pakistan off the Cricket map. This one will take these guys off the mountaineering map. Who-ever planned this needs to meet his 72, if ISI has half a brain left.

It might be interesting to see if someone actually tapped the wireless comms of the terrorists up on the mountain with their handlers down in some base camp below.
Further, there must have been a comms link all the way to Pindi with the eventual controller giving the nod.

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, it seems very likely that TTP is then simply a pressure group applied by jihad pasand officers and ex-officers on Pak Army brass. That's why Imran Khan will not say anything to condemn TTP and instead keeps bloviating on Pashtuns in distress over drones. He is in Hamid Gul's pocket in any case. That's why as Gagan mentioned the half wits attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team.

That is why the departure of Umrika is looked forward to, so that Pak Army can stop fighting its own internal allies under Umrikan pressure.

Umrika talking to Taliban is another way of reconciling not Afghan factions but Umrikan aid dependent and anti-Umrika factions of Pak Army. Nothing better for such reconciliation than Umrika funding Pak Army while Pak Army funds the Taliban. Afghans are irrelevant to this process of Pak Army reconciliation over Umrikan money and patronage. Heck even Pakistanis getting killed by jihad pasand groups are irrelevant

Fallout of Nanga Parbat begins to leave Paki tourism nanga in public
Pakistan's already embattled tourism industry is struggling to deal with worried customers and cancellations after Islamic militants attacked foreign climbers preparing to challenge one of the world's tallest mountains, killing 11 people. For years, intrepid climbers and mountaineers, lured by a collection of awe-inspiring peaks, were some of the only international tourists willing to come to Pakistan. The region has also attracted Pakistanis looking for a respite from the summer heat in the southern part of the country.

Now hotel owners, tour operators and tourism officials worry that may be in danger after the vicious attack by militants Saturday on the climbing group at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, the second highest peak in Pakistan and the ninth highest in the world.

"The impact is huge," said Ghulam Nabi Raikoti, one of two brothers who run Raikot Serai, a resort in an area of northern Pakistan called Fairy Meadows. From the hotel's cottages and tents, visitors can look up at the face of Nanga Parbat, which has been nicknamed the "killer mountain" for the number of people who've died trying to climb its 8,126-meter (26,660-foot) peak. Raikoti said a tour group of 50 Pakistani students already cancelled a stay at the resort.

Pakistan has been beset by militancy for years, but this attack will likely be especially disruptive to tourism because it struck foreign tourists in what is usually one of the most peaceful regions of the country.
The attack also demonstrated a high degree of planning. Just getting to the base camp takes roughly two days of hiking.

The militants, disguised in paramilitary uniforms, first abducted two local Pakistanis to take them to the remote camp in Gilgit-Baltistan. Late Saturday night, a group of about 15 gunmen attacked the camp, beat the mountaineers and took away mobile and satellite phones and money. Some climbers and guides were able to run away, but those that weren't were shot dead. By the end, 10 foreign tourists and a Pakistani cook employed by a tour company were killed. A faction of the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the shootings.

The remaining mountaineers who were at camps higher up on Nanga Parbat when the shooting happened have been evacuated to allow the authorities to freely comb the area for the suspects, said the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Manzoor Hussain. "In that area it is difficult for someone to hide," said Hussain, who added that there will be no more expeditions to Nanga Parbat this summer.

The Pakistani military evacuated 34 tourists Monday on a C-130 aircraft that flew them to Islamabad, said Muhammed Ajmal Bhatti, deputy commissioner of Diamer District near where the shootings happened; about a dozen left on Sunday. They were also evacuating the porters, guides and other Pakistanis from the area. About 30 to 40 of the foreign climbers are stuck in Islamabad, waiting for their equipment to be returned to them before they can go home [perfect halal targets?]. At a memorial service Tuesday in Islamabad for the slain tourists and cook, Polish climber Aleksandra Dzik said the mountaineers were evacuated from base camp by helicopter and allowed to take only one backpack with them because of weight restrictions.

She said they hope army helicopters can bring their supplies down or porters allowed up to retrieve them. The climbing gear can cost thousands of dollars. Hussain from the Alpine Club of Pakistan said the club was working with authorities to get the equipment sent to Islamabad as quickly as possible. Those associated with the tour industry, including tour operators affected by the tragedy, faced worried customers.
Mohammed Ali, owner of Karakoram Magic Mountain, with which the slain cook was working, said a trekking tour expected later this summer was already in doubt.

"I don't know if they will come or not. Last night they sent emails to me, and they want to know more information about this incident," he said.

Several thousand foreign tourists a year come to the northern region known as Gilgit-Baltistan during the warmer summer months. Trekkers come for longer hikes that don't require technical skill or equipment. Climbers generally tackle the more serious peaks that require technical skills and a good deal of experience.

Anyone planning to climb a peak 6,500 meters or higher or those climbing in sensitive areas, needs a climbing permit from the government of Pakistan, said Abu Zafar Sadiq, secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
Thousands of families in Gilgit-Baltistan depend on the seasonal tourist trade. Families often work for three to four months in the summer and then live off that income for the rest of the year. At one point in the 1990s, about 120 to 150 climbing expeditions received permits each summer to climb in the northern region, but that number plummeted to about 20 or 30 after the Sept. 11, 2011 attacks in the United States, said Tayyab Mir, manager for publicity and promotion at the Pakistan Tourism Development.

In the ensuing years, a series of terrorist attacks, military offensives, and natural disasters has largely kept tourists away. But in recent years, officials said they had started to see a slight uptick in tourism. So far, 50 groups had applied for climbing permits in 2013, said Sadiq.

Now even that subtle gain seems to be in danger. A fresh threat from the militant group that claimed responsibility for the shooting is likely to even further worry prospective tourists.
In a phone call to The Associated Press, a spokesman for Junudul Hafsa, a faction of the Pakistani Taliban, said they will continue attacks against foreign tourists, especially those from Europe and the U.S., until drone attacks in the tribal regions are stopped.

"These attacks will become more aggressive and frequent," said the spokesman who identified himself as Abdullah Ghazi.

I don't understand the issue about abducting two locals? What was that about? Squeezing info about the foreigners before the attack?
Pakistani cook employed by a tour company were killed
Also note that the cook was reportedly a Shi'ite and hence he was killed. That said, I doubt they were going to leave anybody in the service of the foreigners alive.

Yeah right! Pakistanis excel in down hill skiing. Those guys must now be in Pindi, Kakul, Quetta, Krachi or Muridke. Keep combing. Maybe you will find some goats.

Pakistan will continue to maintain a perfect record of solving high profile murders - zero. In densely populated urban centers the police did an effective job of hosing down the crime scene. Here they don't have to go through those pains. The snow will cover the tracks of the new alphabet-soupers.

Do visit this link for detailed report on Nanga Parbhat Massacre (also there are names and profile pics of the dead climbers)

http://www.brownpundits.com/2013/06/25/ ... -massacre/

This “message” will probably wreck the remaining high-end tourism (aka serious climbing) in this part of the Himalayas (climbers may still come to K-2 because that region is more remote, has more military presence and is not so close to where the Jihad has its Kohistani node). Even this destruction of tourism potential may have a sectarian dimension. Some people have said that the Takfiri terrrorists and their supporters are not the main beneficiaries of the millions spent by foreign climbers in the region; the more educated shia/Ismaili entrepreneurs of Gilgit-Baltistan dominate the high-end trade. I am not sure how true this is…and someone with better local knowledge can enlighten us about the religious loyalties of the porters, cooks and guides who will now lose their livelihood in addition to the Gilgit tour operators and climbing expedition companies?
The massacre has certainly struck a chord among Westernized upper-middle class Pakistanis, especially those with links to the army and bureaucracy. The majestic mountains of Northern Pakistan are not the original homeland of our (predominantly) Punjabi elite, but thanks to the accidents of history, they are now “OUR mountains” and we are VERY proud of them. Even as things fell apart elsewhere, we were still home to some of the most beautiful valleys and imposing mountains in the world. And professional climbers still came from all over the world to pit themselves against K-2 and Nanga Parbat and the dozens of other peaks in that region. Shias being pulled off buses in Chilas (just miles from the site of this current outrage) never really hurt the elite in the way THIS is hurting. So I dont doubt that a good section of the Pakistani elite and the majority of young officers in the region are determined to bring these killers to book. But I do doubt that they will get too far. Strategic depth has come home and its not easy to change that. The killers have just vanished off the face of the earth because they have local support (many of them may be locals themselves). And that local support connects with the wider jihadi network. And that network is connected to the “good taliban” and the “good jihadis”: the kind who were supposed to get us Kashmir and Afghanistan. The dream may be a bit faded by now, but it still has power.
(From a friend who knows the region well): I interviewd sher khan today, a survivor of nanga parbat and close relative of nazir sabir. Here is summary..they had been camped at north west face of nanga parbat for a month….on that night…just past midnight they came shouting “taliban, alqaida, surrender”…they were masked, in tactical wests and shoes and had head lamps….they searched all tents …smashed satellite fones, solar panels and laptops….gathered all at one place….sagregated pakistanis……made video of every foreigner asking his name and country….were speaking pashtu, urdu in pashtu accent and a few words of shina….after video they ordered the foreigners to make a line and turn, ….then with a loud thunder of allah o akbar, that echoed from far away due to few of them .in outer cardon as well, 9-10 people opened fire and then leader shot every body at back of head to ensure that faces are mutilated beyond recognition due to exit wound….they gave lecture to pakistani survivors about supermacy of kitaal and jihaad…..then checked their id cards ….found hassan on one card…..shot him in head and face and left chanting allah o akbar. However, they left sher khan, not knowing he is an ismaaili.

As expected, the Paknationalist web is alive with conspiracy theories. Leading anchorperson Talat and leading analyist Moeed Pirzada have tweeted and facebooked about the need to be bold and blame India. Friends and family in the army are convinced that the Hinjews have struck another blow against Pak-China friendship, high-altitude tourism, and other strategic levers of Pakistan. Why the finest intelligence agency in the world cannot stop these conspiracies is not explained. Incompetent or complicit? there is no third option.

That there is no third option is what drives Paknationalists crazy. Do we admit we are incompetent? or do we think we are complicit? Unstoppable force meets immovable object and conspiracy theories erupt from the point of contact.
still, its getting harder and harder to keep up the charade.

I was curious after I saw the following tweet by the very fine Sadanand Dhume:
Disappointed that my friend @DalrympleWill's Afghanistan essay creates a moral equivalence between bombing embassies and building hospitals.
Which led me quickly to this newly published magnum opus of rubbish by the very ficked up William Dalrymple:

A DEADLY TRIANGLE:
AFGHANISTAN, PAKISTAN, AND INDIA

http://www.brookings.edu/research/essay ... stan-india

Reading this is painful, as Sadanand pointed out. But this bit in there is both amusing and comforting. Which is the current state of affairs of the very tall and very fair and very tight musharraf'ed jernails right within Lahore:
The danger posed by the jihadis—not just to India, but to Pakistan as well—is increasingly clear to all. In the late spring, when I tried to have breakfast with a Pakistani friend who lives near the military’s main primary school in Lahore, I was unable to get to him because all the roads through the Lahore Cantonment area were blocked by checkpoints. According to the soldiers manning the roadblocks, so fearful have the generals become of the Pakistani Taliban that they lock down much of Lahore every day in order to insure that their kids can get safely to school and back. They have also abandoned the use of military number plates on their cars, aware that these might attract the attention of Taliban suicide bombers.
Ha ha. Them little darpok jernails, who are not even free to live freely inside their own homes.

I bet that that very fat Hafez-e-Saeed needs no lock downs, or any checkpoint security, as he freely moves around to mate with all them L-e-T widows in his various harems around Lahore.

I have always maintained that before Indians complain about being attacked by Pakistan-trained terrorists, they should realize that Pakistanis are also attacked by Pakistan-trained terrorists. Equal==Equal onlee.

There are extremists on both sides of the border. There are terrorists in Karachi and there are terrorists in Mumbai (who came from Karachi on a boat). Equal==Equal onlee.

Dalrymple was simply saying this in less eloquent words.

Anujanullah,

That Darlalympel is a lifafa agent i suspect will be thesedays a known matter onlee atleast on beeareff.

However, regarding the principals directing him, their goals for the Indo - afpak state of play and most importantly the reason accepting his foisting on us , for the platform provided and the paeans sung for him by prominent RNIs on this side of the border which ultimately helped build much of his present phoney garb of legitimacy as an interlocutor of the sooth-asian affairs.....

There are the nebulous questions for which there are no easy answers onlee.
My personal pet theory though veers towards the UQ - considering the not so subtle historical fiction which drips through Darlamemosple's pen whitewashing the UQ role in the state of affairs .

oh btw, what happened of zaid ham-ied after his farts on how he would take on Kiyani. It seems he is yet unharmed, after conspiring against COAS. Which again means, that the lobby that supports this little turd is holding true levers of power and is controlling major portion of the jihadi fistula, even COAS of TSPA is ineffective against them. Again, these guys need not be senior too, of crore commander or even major general rank. These seem to be a group of low-down colonels and majors in TSPA. But these guys tug the hearts & minds of most of the cadre and the tatte of the talibs.
