That may not happen. The Lumia 520/620/720 are decidedly low end when it comes to hardware. The cheaper chipanda Androids have more processor muscle and more RAM, yet they are buggy and laggy unlike the Lumia series. WP seems to be better suited to run on low-end hardware than Android.

Three most outstanding features of LUMIA from yuppy crowd perspective:

1. Seamless integration of social networking site(s) with your contacts and how the same is displayed and accessed.
2. Unlimited music download and that too with all the new albums updated at the same time as they hit the market.
3. Funky colours that go well with design.

Perhaps. If prices can be lowered by using cheaper components, then it may happen. Imagine if a 3.5" touchscreen WP can be had for Rs.2000-3000. Nokia does great with their h/w, better than any of the other Android OEMs and is even better than the iPhone. We don't know what will happen once the chipandas get busy with WP, should they decide to do it.

something called like 625 is coming , with a 4.7 screen and cheaper components like a 1.2ghz dual core ... looking at the screen size and potential price point of around 14-15k slotted below the 720, I think NOK has seen some panda scurrying noises in the undergrowth and is moving to head them off with a similar priced but better performing & supported offering WITH a big screen that will atleast not be sorely outsized by the 5" which pandas are sure to bring to table.

had some fun playing with the lag and screens of the huge 5+ inch panda phablets today....not a very edifying sight or experience for sure.

http://press.nokia.com/2013/07/23/fun-f ... lumia-625/
its meant for guys on a budget who still want a huge screen.

matrimc: if CS variables are private to the thread, then it should be fine. if CS itself is a transaction (or nested), then it should be fine. But if one goes by Anujan's regression calls, and by your defintion of child threads provided an access to CS, without a protection, then I see problems - dead lock is for sure., and if anything other than method/thread scope variable is used then you are in integrity trouble. did i get this correct?

now, most mobile OS are going multi cores and hyper threading, it is a valid discussion.

That won't happen unless Mickey changes its HW certification policy...something it enforces now for PCs running Windoze too. That's the reason why WP works so consistently well UX wise on low end HW even when made by Chipanda cos (they already do it). Mickey's rationale behind how to leverage a mobile platform is a bit different from Chacha....Chacha has a more Laissez Faire approach to what devices can run Android....it results in the same advantages and disadvantages which Symbian had.

MSFT has controls on the minimum level of hardware that goes into a WP handset, something that Google is not in a position to do as on date.

Chipanda cos won't be able to stuff WP onto just some random dragon-made 'QUADCOREEEEEEE' powered weakling just like that. Even then looking at the way WP7.5 ran on ancient single core sub-1GHz CPU+256MB RAM combo and the way it runs today on 2+ year old Krait dual cores with just 512MB RAM for WP8 (right up to 720 and the just announced 625 too IIRC), one would expect it to hold up pretty well on weak HW.

It is downright disappointing at times for me when even on my SGS3 running Android JB I encounter occasional lags and freezes in routine UI functions which even an el-cheapo 520 seems to be completely free from.

Personally for me, no amount of rationalizations or excuses can compensate for something like that :-?

Actually, having multiple vendor is good for the app and games dev market. app writers need to port their apps to multiple OS aiding healthy competition.

OK. Fine. Have all or most Windows PCs (from all the different OEMs) since Win7 was released perform trouble free?

^^^Nothing performs 500% problem free including any iToys :P What these certifications do is ensure as much as possible that the UX is uniform across all makes of the device category so yes it does achieve that fairly well. And this is important becoz more and more UX is considered an integral part of branding.

Something for RB about Marissa bibi

Ben Ling: Mayer on par with Steve Jobs, Larry Page

Ben Ling: Mayer on par with Steve Jobs, Larry Page
New Khosla addition Ben Ling outlines how Marissa Mayer is making Yahoo great again

Khosla’s newest partner, Ben Ling, has a pretty storied resume. With a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford, Ling has held senior operating roles at Google, YouTube, and Facebook. He was Google’s Senior Director of Search Products and Local Business Products. Most recently, he was the COO of Badoo.

Up until his move to Khosla Ventures, Ling was also a successful angel investor, with investments in companies like Fab, Palantir, DogVacay, IndieGoGo, PracticeFusion, Pulse, Udemy, and more.

During his time at Google, he worked side-by-side with Marissa Mayer for several years. So what’s his take on how she’s doing at Yahoo? Bullpen Capital’s Paul Martino asked Ling what kind of advice he’d give Mayer at last week’s Venture Shift.

Ling said that Mayer has been able to do what she alone can accomplish in Silicon Valley, “aside from Larry Page and Steve Jobs.”

He added: “My advice to Marissa would be her advice to me: she’s made Yahoo a viable place to work for top talent. A few years ago, people would laugh you out of the room if you asked them if they would go work for yahoo. Now it’s clear this company is making a swing for it. It’s actively engaging users.”

Perhaps. But some brands tend to have a better UX. There are many Win7 POS PCs out there and the UX sucks donkey d1cks. I dunno, outside of Nokia, I don't hold much hope for other brands for supporting WP and perhaps MSFT should make Nokia exclusive.

you guys should take a look at micromax canvas4 and the main micromax pages on facebook. legions of weaklings pay up in advance online and then whine and cry when shipments are delayed. superb game changing features like "blow to unlock" and "look away to pause" which per a review I read work 30% of the time. most of them already had slightly older micromax products but want want want the next 3-month update cycle.

the best thing is a guy moaning over the QUAD CORE and demanding a OCTA CORE as if thats going to fix this life problems. :rotfl:

this is what happens when you let uneducated consumers get into a biryani buffet...they will eat horsemeat and comment on how GOOOD good the chicken tastes.

If I remember correctly, Ms. Mayer was dating Mr. Page very early in google's history. This was before he became a rich chap, so presumably she liked something in him.

Is it only me or does anyone else find Ms. Mayer in the 'not-so-hot' category.

Nope she was into gold digging back then too....her 'attraction' to Mr. Page may not have been physical or mental :P She is not really good looking in person though she always dresses nice. Anyhow in an industry of geeks where CEOs look like page and Ballmer, even the beady eyed wimmens is considered beauty queen. Marissa is not stupid, she is quite smart and shrewd when it comes to her own interests.

obviously there is more than one battery in there. A button-type memory battery can be seen on motherboards that come on a smartphone and can generate enough voltage to radio a ping or two. So even if one removes the battery, there is still a possibility of a trace. Aur bolo.

Pls dont spoil the real meaning of desi by calling these brands desi or indian. They are offshore traders for chinese brands and factories who dont get into retail thats all. Today they trade phones, tomorroe ceiling fans, next day ganesha idols made in gansu onlee...wherever the price arbitrage is right.
The bigger cheen retailers like lenovo, zte, haier, gionee are slowly upping their own retail presence in india...they see an opportunity to eat meat off samsung plate and same time run the whole chain than outsource the last mile problem to micromax types.

. There are plenty of compelling Windows Phone 8 options, from the gorgeous 925 to the feature-packed 1020, but they can’t change the fact that Windows Phone 8 itself just isn’t that compelling.

Throughout my entire time with the device, I kept coming back to Stephen Elop. He told the Guardian that Nokia picked Windows Phone because it feared Samsung would come to dominate the Android market, and that Nokia wouldn’t be able to compete. I disagree. The 1020, plus all the sharing options and apps that Google’s OS brings, could be a ridiculously compelling phone. I’d happily carry a big phone that gave me a perfect camera, but right now with the 1020 I’m carrying a big phone running a third-place OS just for the imaging prowess. For Nokia’s sake, I hope Windows Phone 8 gets the apps it needs before HTC, Apple, or Samsung wakes up and builds a killer cameraphone to go with a killer ecosystem. But either way, I hope it happens soon – I hear Justin Timberlake’s coming back to New York this fall.
Right phonewa in the wrong ecosystem - hopefully M$ is subsidizing GB to persist with their OS.
I for one would have loved it if atleast GB surreptitiously allows its Phonewas to run Android for the enthusiast crowd.

actually how many apps does the avg user really use long term - my guess is probably around 10 are heavily used - facebook, twitter, youtube, a magazine reading like flipboard, a browser, a music store system, maps, maybe whatever are the top3 popular games of the day, a email client ... people may experiment and may install a lot but do they really use them daily later? the ecosystem is awash with me-too apps in the 1000s the world has no use for.

many of these apps like facebook, twitter, linkedin, youtube, amazon are created not by agile, hungry 3rd parties but by behemoth cos who can easily support 5 versions of their native app if needed.

can anyone name 10 huge apps that are 3rd party and made serious money for their agile, hungry, small , ecosystem oriented creators on android or iphone ecosystem?

and what exactly are the benefits of "rooting" on android other than wipe off wasteful vendor UI and get back some speed? WP8 is already very speedy and doesnt need such tricks.
there are no secret apps or turbo levels to unlock by rooting is there? people have forgotten the why of it...just like jihadis just tend to get into a frenzy once the mullah unleashes his flock out the gate. any app that runs on a supposedly 'pure' wahabi rooted phone will run just fine on touchwiz or htc sense or any panda skin in the wild .... Google unable to force all android licensees to frequently update their phones is a failing of android. that cannot be a viewed as a +ve for rooting , just a cause-effect to bypass this failing.

Singhaji, it is more about the long tail app content that is missing in WP ecosystem rather than any top of the line apps (there are a few notable exceptions like Instagram, and definitely few others). For example, a TV program was asking for audition videos, and had provided an Android and an iOS version of the app, WP was not supported. Niticentral has Android app but does not have a WP app. Similarly there are utility apps (like stock trading tips apps, etc which are not HUGE apps but for a user depending on tips from a certain blogger or a company is tied to the ecosystem by that single app.

The top of the line apps in Android/iOS can/will be encouraged by MS and other ecosystem players to support WP, but the task becomes impossible for long tail app content.

^ Actually Singha ji many required apps (for me) require Superuser(root) permissions to revoke access permissions of other apps, for protecting privacy or to just simply adblock.

To enable USB OTG on devices with "fixed" storage capacity  etc too root is required.
