Sikh community opposes plan for meat plant next to temple in Bradford

A halal meat plant planned for a site beside a prominent Sikh temple in Bradford is being fiercely opposed by worshippers, who feel it disrespects their religious beliefs.

Food firm Pakeezah wants to convert a disused car repair workshop in Percival Street into a modern wholesale meat plant and its proposal is being recommended for approval at Tuesday’s Area Planning Panel.

But Bradford’s Sikh community fears the redevelopment could mean the smell of meat wafting into the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara building, which fronts onto Leeds Road.

“Many of our people are strict vegetarians and the notion of meat being so near to the temple is disrespectful and insensitive,” said Dr Kuldip Bharj, secretary of the Board of Bradford Gurdwaras which oversees the local Sikh community. “The analogy of putting a pork butcher beside a mosque or synagogue is a good one."

“Although we do not eat halal meat, we do not condemn it as repugnant because we do respect other religions. It is really that the smell of meat is very offensive for people who don’t eat it.”

Dr Bharj said there were also concerns that beef might be processed at the site, which is only yards from the temple boundary.

“The cow is viewed as a sacred animal and beef is prohibited in Sikhism as it is in Hinduism,” she said.

The Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara is the largest place of worship for Sikhs in the north, said its president Kuldeep Duley. In a letter to Council planning officer Mohammed Yousef, he wrote: “A butchery plant should be on an industrial estate rather than next to a place of worship and community centre where people will be exposed to the disgraceful smell and noise.

“We are also concerned the wash from the plant will feed rats in the drains, increasing the rodent problem already in the area.

Pakeezah director Tariq Haq said he was keen to allay any fears.

“We would never dream of doing anything that might cause offence to our neighbours and many of our customers are Sikhs,” he said. “After it was wrongly said initially that there would be an abattoir, we went to the temple and explained the details.

“Firstly, in 40 years we have never bought a beef carcass and our business is only in chicken, mutton and lamb. Also, this will just be a butchery like the one we already operate just a few feet away and have done for 20 years “It will be modern and hygienic with no smells, as all the product arrives below 4 degrees C. We have also had a noise report done which satisfied the council.”

A Council spokesman said: “We recognise there are significant concerns and opponents will have their chance to put points to the planning committee on August 13.”

My Query : Is Jhatka or "Non-Halal" Meat available in all parts of India or only in Punjab?

Added Later : Compare the above to the Item from the UK Local News Paper Report in The Telegraph and Argus to the following Report in The Times of India.

Sikhs in British city oppose halal meat plant near gurdwara

Anatomy of India-Pakistan reconciliation - IDSA Comment by Arun Sahgal
There is a growing thinking in the West that the rivalry between India-Pakistan, the two nuclear armed neighbours, is the root cause for the current impasse in Afghanistan. It underscores that India-Pakistan are reaching a negative crest in their relationship owing to the dialogue process that is largely clogged and a growing economic and military asymmetry between the two. These according to Western policy analysts are enhancing Pakistani insecurities at three levels, with negative impact on Afghan reconciliation process.

The first level of insecurity relates to growing conventional asymmetry that western interlocutors believe is forcing Pakistan to enhance its nuclear arsenal both in qualitative and quantitative terms. By linking tactical nuclear weapons with conventional warfare doctrine to deny India the space for limited war “under nuclear overhang” is even more dangerous.

At the second level, it seems that Pakistan’s insecurities are based on the post-2014 scenario. The Nawaz Sharif government is attempting to leverage the insecurities at two levels: one, despite the popular anti-Pakistan discourse in the US, it has successfully positioned Pakistan, as a key actor with avowed influence over Taliban leadership, in the reconciliation and reintegration process in Afghanistan. Islamabad is simultaneously using its clout with both the Quetta Shura and the Haqqani group to emerge as an honest broker for a pro-Taliban swing in the reconciliation process. Pakistani influence over Taliban, supported by the Saudi, is seen by the US as being crucial for its overall Afghan strategy. Not surprisingly, Sartaj Aziz is advising the Afghan leadership on power sharing agreement with Taliban. Equally not surprising is the fact that John Kerry in his recent visit to Pakistan promised a five year 11 billion dollar assistance package to address Pakistan’s critical energy and other infrastructural needs, even as Sharif made customary protest over drone strikes.

Despite the double game of being an important interlocutor in the US-led reconciliation efforts while simultaneously conniving with Taliban, the reality is that there are concerns in Islamabad over its future relationship with the Taliban. Equally important are the concerns about India’s increasing relevance and good equation with the Afghan government and political leaders of all hues. Like other donor nations, India’s continued effort will be critical for Afghanistan’s peace and stability beyond 2014. This is something which even the Taliban acknowledges. {I have not seen such a Taliban acknowledgement. If anybody has any reference, please provide}Currently it appears that the military establishment limited aim is to ensure a pro-Pakistan post-2014 Afghan government.

The third level of insecurity is vis-a-vis India. There is a definitive diplomatic push by the newly elected Nawaz Sharif government towards improving relations with India, what is being highlighted in the West as the grand reconciliation. This is circumscribed by restarting the dialogue process through a focus on trade and commerce. The Indian gestures of providing much needed gas and electricity to energy starved Pakistan is seen as being part of this reconciliation strategy. The Sharif government is aware that long term development and economic stability can only come about by building bridges with India.

Resolution of Siachin and Sir Creek are part of this strategy, although, at least, the Pakistani military is aware that Siachin remains intractable and linked to broader reconciliation of the boundary and Kashmir dispute. Efforts, nonetheless, is to mount international pressure and leverage soft political sentiment in India for a possible settlement. Thus a positive spin to bilateral relations is seen as a win-win for both Pakistan and the West. It gives Sharif the political space to keep the military at bay and focus on the deteriorating internal situation.

The Pakistani establishment remains sanguine that as long as it can leverage both cross border terrorism as well as conventional asymmetry by playing the nuclear card, it can easily manage relations with India. In fact, Pakistan wants to use “regional security and stability” together with “building bridges” to extract maximum mileage with India supported, of course, by Western pressure.

These developments need to be seen from a larger geo-strategic perspective wherein cornered international forces are willing to make any compromises and even arm twisting to ensure an early and somewhat credible exit from Afghanistan. It is this fear of an early pull out and probable instability that Pakistan is attempting to leverage. There is yet another perspective that recognises India being politically weak and susceptible to international pressure, something which number of analysts and commentators seem to allude.

India would need to tread carefully as it attempts to reopen composite dialogue and work towards Af-Pak stability. Some of these are:
  • Give a clear message to Pakistan and the international community that if another Mumbai 26/11 attack was to take place, India reserves the right to act in self defence {This is meaningless. The bumbling Indian politicians and bureaucrats may be appearing to talk tough but in reality, they are simply 'buying time' until they retire and somebody else would need to handle the case. We said the same after Kargil after the Parliament attack, after the Mumbai commuter train attack and after the multi-city coordinated bombing. Our threat is therefore empty and carries no fear for Pakistan. The US which is brokering may be laughing their bottoms out at such Indian fake threats but they may present a straight face, with some difficulty, and 'accept' the Indian demand knowing fully well that another Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attack is just around the corner and as usual, India would sit tight} and restore deterrence credibility.
  • India must look at its engagement in Afghanistan from the prism of national interest. Three things are important: First, to strengthen operational efficacy of ASF in the fight against subversive forces for stability and sovereignty, India must continue to help Kabul in training and equipment. Second, India must continue with its developmental assistance, including investments in TAPI and other mining project like iron ore. Third, India must take a call on Afghan Taliban, and not be guided by western perspectives. The question to ponder is whether India supports their integration in the Afghan political process and if so, what are the bottom lines.
  • Pakistan must move forward on normalising economic relations with India. This should be on reciprocal basis with India offering greater concession provided Pakistan shows positive intent that includes MFN and transit rights for India among others. Given the right atmospherics the two could rethink on the IPI pipeline and a Free Trade Zone around Lahore, where large number of Indian industries can use Pakistani super highways as export routes from either Karachi or Gwadar.
For India, the resolution of Kashmir, Siachin and even Sir Creek, should be put on the back burner, till such time that the bilateral relations gets the economic traction.

For any upswing in the peace trajectory there is a need to shed the baggage of the past and look for innovative solutions. India, however, should make clear that improved relations with Pakistan cannot come at the expense of its core interests.

We have three choices.

1.Covert and overt mil. action against Paki terror entities and army units.Even more intense sealing of borders, minefields, fencing, etc.Building a string of mil. cantonements "forts" in J&K and increasing the numbers of army and paras accordingly.

2.Diplomatic "punishment" if we do not want to escalate tension on the border.OPtions, downgrading mission status.Expulsion of diplomatic staff, reduction in mumbers, cutting off all trade and sporting links,etc.,etc.

3.Use both options 1 and 2.

Option 4,do nothing ,keep talking, the current policy is nothing more than "appeasement" of the "peace in our time" statement by Neville Chamberlain which allowed the Nazis to start WW2.Will our "appeasement " policies also encourage the Pakis to start another "Kargil"?
Remember that the same PM,the "Sherrif" is in the chair!

Guys, I just read the news, but this massive submarine blast in Mumbai, could that be a TSP attack? The Navy chief and defense minister say the cause the blast is unknown. In terms of Navy's capability to hit TSP should war break out, will be the loss of this submarine be a major impediment?

Action against Pakistan has always been impeded by our own pusillanimity (at least over the least decade or two). So, it is very important to think through, what India can do without drawing the ire of those who have sold out (read Jyothi I-am-a-Pakistani-agent Malhotra) and those who have no respect for Indian lives (MS Aiyer) and their likes.

The steps should be based on the simple proposition that concessions, if any will have to be earned by Pakistan - not by good behavior, but by taking strategic steps of down-scaling.

Steps could include for example:
- Indian assistance to our textiles industry, which if well targeted could kill the Pakistani textile industry
- No business, student, work or medical visas for Pakistanis - recognize that within the next couple of years Pakistanis will ways restrictions on travel from most US/European countries due to their own inherent behavioral flaws.
- Redirect the eastern IW rivers waters legitimately, so that they do not reach Pakistan
- Ensure VERY limited market access for Pakistani products of any kind in India - who will they sell to and what will they sell?
- Ensure Indian medicines find it difficult to reach Pakistani markets or if they do, are extremely expensive to buy.
- Simply increase Indian defense spending to above 3% of GDP

The 3.5 friends of Pakistan cannot support Pakistan beyond a certain point - the approach should be to try and test that point.

The question is - what will Pakistan put on the table to earn concessions from India (concessions such as not destroying their textile industry)?

SSridhar,

I completely agree. I think our bogus threats that "next time we will do this, this, and that" are a cruel joke. I don't see how India can get out of this lock jam with TSP without making serious concessions to TSP if we continue this "show the other cheek", dialouge BS. TSP is currently on a high. You can see it on their faces (I don't know if its fake) in their appearances in Indian media, thanks to US betrayal: as predcted, their exit from AfPak is predicated on selling India down the Indus river. One Paki even said that you keep threatening to cut dialogue off, but you (meaning India) are the ones calling for and need a dialogue. I mean India going into a dialogue with the Paki scum with that kind chutzpah, means they are going to make brazen demands, and unless India is prepared to walk out, I don't know whats the purpose.

Anindya,

Boss, I am all for those steps, but TSP will interpret those measures as declaration of war, especially the water part. The 3.5 will agree. Then what happens. But I agree that for current situation with TSP pointing a gun at India and demanding concessions means surrender. And already we have surrendered of sorts given our meek response to 26/11 and many other pigLeT attacks.

Contractionary monetary policy : Govt dragging feet as IMF demands interest rate hike
ISLAMABAD : As Pakistan faces pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to make loans (for the private sector) expensive by notching up the minimum interest rate to double digits, the government has not yet convened a meeting of the Monetary and Fiscal Policies Coordination Board.

Just watching Arnab interviewing Salman Kurshid.

Salman Kurshid represents all that is wrong with Indian approach to Pakistan. He now says that India is willing to let Hafeez Sayeed off the hook because the Pakistani courts have not accepted the Indian evidence. He gave another great lifeline to TSP by claiming that if they appear to take some action (what he calls 'delivery') on the 26/11 issue, that would be enough for India.

Really shameful to have a foreign minister like him and he has surpassed SM Krishna. On top of everything, he is so arrogant and dismissive. What sin did we Indians commit to get a man like him at the place where he is in.

its basically UPA govt saying okay we'll forget about 26/11 and the many other terror attacks to keep the peace process on track for the future. Ultimately its Pak army getting what they want - making sure India has no leverage whatsoever over Pak and keeping the relationship "bad".

CRAM,guys,"we will give them a fitting reply at a time and place of our choosing" has been the refrain every time an atrocity takes place. The UPA regime has done exactly that "fittingly replied" in the House! While they hurl bombs and bullets at us,we hurl "replies" back at them! Is not the "pen mightier than the sword" ? That serves up the attitude of the UPA.I asked a pal of mine in in Delhi ,familiar with the "corridors of power",whether there was the "pacu" or "ball cutter" carnivorous fish in the Delhi water supply? His reply was that it mattered little to people who had no testicles!

It has been a deliberate act on the part of MMS to have such species as our Foreign Ministers.Neutered individuals, who pose no threat to the almighty PMO in deciding our foreign policy. With "wets" like these FMs in recent times, specially chosen, who avow any meaningful role for India to play on the world stage, except pontificate,as they verbally defecate,we possess a "failed foreign policy",where as I said earlier, little tiny-tots like Lanka and the Maldives shake their rattles at us while we cower in fear and retreat! And when the Chinese march in 30-40km,showing "their flag",we do nothing to throw them back, but remove all out surveillance eqpt. at their beck and call. This is because we mortgaged our foreign policy through the PMO to Uncle Sam and Washington. What the White House wants from India it usually gets. The only thing standing between us becoming a total offical US lackey and slave is the opposition from the service chiefs against the CISMOA,LSA,etc.,agreements which the US is forcing down our throats. The PMO is trying to find a "back door" method to sign on.

Sartaj Aziz not optimistic about Nawaz, Manmohan meeting

ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister’s Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has said that Pakistan was in the weaker position against India as compare to situation in 1999.

In an interview with Hamid Mir at Geo News program Capital Talk to be aired today (Wednesday) 8:05 pm , he said that Pakistan had held talks with India on the basis of equality in 1999 but unfortunately this was not the case today.

Aziz said that he was not optimistic about Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s proposed meeting with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh.

The adviser said that the Indian government was under opposition’s pressure and meaningful dialogue process with New Delhi would begin in 2014 after elections in India.

To a question, he said that Kargil war undermined Kashmir issue.

Why is UPA political class in such a hurry to forget 26/11 and move on with this mythical peace process.
As a political party they should know that 26/11 has left deep scars in Indian psyche and any effort to sweep it under the carpet or making light of martyred soldiers in Poonch can harm them politically. Why then this desire to achieve political suicide ?
If nothing else, put this peace process in cold box.

Peace with Pakistan is not even going to fetch them any dividend nationally other than self patting of backs by RAPE Class which anyways never votes or swings votes.

Didn't Mumbai spirit move on? What electoral cost did ot inflict on the INC and UPA? They got a thumping victory. So if the Indian psyche was scarred its definitely not that group which brings them to power.

Peace process is linked with trade deals with EU US and many others (which is one of the things Khurshid is referring to in "world political situation"). So it actually does help in a great way. We can't say to hell with the world (as nice as it sounds). It also gets people off our backs - like US trying to impose things on us. Economy is growing fast whilst we have peace, moving more people out of poverty

Peace process with pak was worth a shot ? Ok 15 years on and it's not really working, so do we keep trying to go the extra mile until all those trade deals are sealed? Or do you scrap it and throw punches back at Pak and pick up the economy after? Pak will continue getting aid (whilst in contrast they have been cancelling mil contracts due to lack of money in the last 4 years).

There is a tendency to look at indo pak issues in isolation, but we also need to look at regional picture and take into consideration everything else happening

The CF agreement is not stopping the IA from retaliating. Its an excuse for complaency.

IA can still shoot the pigs and retaliate.

maybe the have only light weapons on the border as some convoluted CBM?

ShyamD, its the old Guns vs Butter argument when India needs both.

nothing stops India from luring the idiots and finsihing them off.
Anyway the growth story has gone south and it gets tiresome when plain folks acant get their onions.

Ramana... I could see a huge diff in retaliate the fire from other end when they start it at their chosen place time etc vs we choosing the place and time.
We follow the CF agreement by word and spirit by scrapping the agreement we might get that advantage of choosing the time and place also it will give them sleepless nights since they have taken it for granted that we will never violate the CF

Thats the problem with you young ones. Keep the agreement in place and fire as required. That way agreement is kept and fire as needed.
Scrapping it gives fodder to TSP to bring US into the picture.
By keeping the agreement and observing it in breach as needed, we take the glare of the flashpoint scenario which is what TSP And US want.

Meanwhile AK Anthony can be pleased that Badmash also agrees with him after so many days!!!!

Sharif reaches out, says army not involved in LoC incident :)
Express news service : New Delhi | Thu Aug 15 2013,

As Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday conveyed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh his desire to turn a “fresh page” in bilateral relations, Pakistan High Commissioner Salman Bashir ruled out “involvement” of its Army in killing of five Indian soldiers on the LoC in Poonch district of J&K last week and said both countries have a responsibility to ensure ceasefire was respected.

Bashir also said both countries should work towards creating conditions conducive for a meeting between their Prime Ministers next month in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“It is very difficult to say how this incident happened but we are very confident that there is no involvement of Pakistan Army in the incident. There is a need to see it with an open mind,” he told reporters after a function to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day at the mission.

Later in the day, Sharif, in a written message to Singh, said, “The people of Pakistan aspire to promote friendly, cooperative and good neighbourly relations between our two countries. I would like to reiterate that it is in our common interest to work closely to achieve our shared goals of peace and prosperity in the region. I look forward to our meeting in New York to discuss issues of mutual interest. It is our desire to turn a fresh page in our bilateral relations.” His message was to convey greetings on the occasion of the Independence Day.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, who also sent a message of greetings to President Pranab Mukherjee, said, “Pakistan remains committed to the improvement of relations with India. It is my sincere hope that we would be able to resolve all outstanding issues between our two countries peacefully, and address the common challenges of ensuring the well being and prosperity of our peoples.”

Asked if Sharif would meet his Indian counterpart next month, the Pakistan envoy said, “Our Prime Minister, very recently, again expressed his desire and has stated that he is looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh next month in New York. We still have some time in between. Both sides should work towards creating conditions conducive for a meeting.”

Washington has alerted New Delhi to a possible Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) attack from the sea on India’a coastal cities including Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Indian counter-terrorism apparatus has taken the threat seriously and the Indian Navy, coast guard and state police along the 7,517 kilometre coastline have been alerted to a possible Lashkar attack akin to 26/11 attack in Mumbai.

Incidentally, the alert for a possible Pak terrorist attack from sea was sent by the CIA days before the 26/11 attacks.

Top government sources said that US intelligence agencies have alerted them to a possible strike from Hafiz Saeed’s group either from sea or in the mainland cities with terrorists crossing over from Bangladesh. “The state police of coastal states have been alerted at the highest level to the threat. We don’t want a repeat of 26/11,” said a senior official.

Gandhi’s forgotten sacrifice: A lesson neither India nor Pakistan learnt
True, Gandhi was deeply disappointed with the unhelpful attitude of the Hindus, but, he was equally hurt by the callousness of the Muslims. ‘India’s Iron Man’, the biography of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel by Balraj Krishna, offers a vivid account of how Gandhi perceived Muslims’ apathy towards him and how he resented their uncooperative attitude. He seldom made his grievances against the Muslims public though, lest he should be misconstrued. In the quiet, uncontaminated climate of the Yervada jail in 1932, and in the company of his most trusted colleagues including Sardar Patel, Gandhi, for the first time, revealed how much ‘sorrow and pain’ were caused to him by the Muslims’ attitude towards him in the Kohat communal rioting and at the 1931 Round Table Conference in London. In a depressed vein, Gandhi said,“Whom should I tell the insults I have borne on behalf of the Muslims? For their sake I have drunk bitter cups of sorrow.”
One day while reading an Urdu school textbook, Gandhi admitted,
“The book pours out maximum poison. It was prescribed by the government as a textbook before the Hindu-Muslim conflict began; and today’s Muslim youth has been brought up on such books.”On another occasion Gandhi referred to a fourth standard Urdu primer of Lahore’s Anjuman-i-Himayat, and regretfully observed,“The reading of this book makes one sad. It appears the Muslim children are taught violence and bloodshed from their childhood.” :rotfl:

Gandhi told Patel and Mahadev Desai one day,
“Iqbal’s opposition to (single) nationhood is shared by many Muslims. Some speak out; others don’t. Iqbal now repudiates his ‘Sare Jahan Se Acchha Hindustan Hamara’ song.”On another day, Gandhi asked Mahadev Desai to draw Patel’s attention to the distorted version of the same song in a government school textbook in Urdu. The song propagated Pan-Islamism, and its first two lines read:“China, Arab hamara, Hindustan hamara; Muslim hain hum, watan hai sara jahan hamara.”(From China to Arabia, the whole territory is ours; India is ours; we are Muslims , and the whole world is ours.)
Gandhi in a melancholic vein commented,
The Muslim boys are brought up on such education. The book hasn’t a single lesson which should teach the Muslim boys that this country is theirs and they should take pride in her. Not only that. As a result, the Muslims have developed enmity with others.”
Gandhi’s regret was that all this was happening despite what he had done or undergone for the sake of Hindu-Muslim unity. Who can forget his heroic fast unto death, held to save the lives of those thousands of Muslims who were sitting ducks in Calcutta amidst the ongoing communal frenzy, in a wretched hovel at the city’s Beliaghata Road in August, 1947? Who can forget his last fast unto death in Delhi, after the cataclysmic partition, held to protect the lives of those vulnerable Muslims who had become refugees in their own country, and to ensure that ‘Pakistan gets its due share’?Gandhi led the Khilafat agitation, boldly bearing attacks from senior Congress leaders, Hindu leaders and the saintly Britisher, CF Andrews. And it was at the Round Table Conference, which could have provided India with an opportunity to gain independence in 1931, that Gandhi met his Waterloo at the hands of the Muslims. Maulana Shaukat Ali had told the American journalist William Shirer:
“If the Hindus don’t meet our demands this time, we’re going to make war on them. We ruled the Hindus once. At least we don’t intend to be ruled by them now.”
This was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. Gandhi had to admit to ‘an inglorious end’ to his years of labours. According to Shirer,
“This failure, as Gandhi often said, was the greatest cross he ever bore.”
One day Patel ruefully asked Gandhi:
“Are there any Muslims who will listen to you?”
The truth is nobody, nobody paid heed to Gandhi, neither Hindus nor Muslims. Yes, he was let down by all of us; we deserted him whilst the forsaken Mahatma fought alone for peace. It’s a pity that 66 years since independence we have not learned our lessons yet. It’s a pity that we are allowing his sacrifice to go waste.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan may have to put Z.A.Bhutto’s above claim to the test:

The "Liberals" on both sides of the border shed tears for Kasab, deplored how capital punishment was state sponsored murder and killing Kasab wont bring the victims back and when challenged they said they opposed dealth penalty as a matter of principle

The death sentences of 3 LeJ terrorists are apparently going to get carried out. I dont hear a single whimper. Crickets are chirping. Why no support for them?

In the politically rewarding rush to pillory Antony, it is worrisome that the real culprits responsible for mishandling the aftermath of last week’s fatal ambush in the Poonch sector have got away scot-free. So far. These culprits are the same people who were responsible for creating a diplomatic minefield over Balochistan at a meeting between Singh and Pakistan’s then prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, in Sharm el-Sheikh in July 2009.

According to information available to this columnist, before Antony went to Parliament accusing “approximately 20 heavily armed terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan Army uniform” of killing five Indian soldiers and wounding another, the defence secretary, R.K. Mathur, ran a different, more strongly-worded draft with the prime minister’s office. In the PMO, at least one senior official who was responsible for courting disaster in Sharm el-Sheikh demanded proof from Mathur that the Pakistan army had any responsibility for the ambush as implied in that draft statement.

Mathur developed cold feet and a fresh, watered down draft was put up before the defence minister to be read out in Parliament. Because emotions were running high among Opposition benches on account of the watered down statement which appeared to exonerate the Pakistan army, aberrations in Antony’s statement that should have been obvious were overlooked.

Most significant of all, the defence minister told Parliament on the day after the fatal ambush that “the Indian Army successfully eliminated 19 hardcore terrorists... along the Line of Control and in the hinterland” off the LoC in the previous six weeks. Antony did not go into details, but this columnist has learnt that in view of the 100 per cent increase in attempts to infiltrate terrorists from across the LoC, the security forces have launched tactical operations to eliminate local support that provides the spadework for such infiltration.

At least four Pakistanis residing along the LoC were killed two weeks ago in one such operation. However, information about such tactical successes has been suppressed and the needle of suspicion for the silence is pointing towards the PMO, which has been anxious to create good atmospherics for a meeting between Singh and Pakistan’s new prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, on the sidelines of the UN general assembly in New York in September.

Truth to tell, the US Army must be jittery. The political imbeciles running India are really making things unpredictable for them. The US must really have a large needle stuck into the PMO to ensure that MMS meets Nawaz and another Sharm el sheik happens.

The US knows, as all of India and the rest of the world know too, that the Commander-in-Chief's statement was for public consumption and India would simply sit tight on its immobile haunches.

^^About "world political situation", how fair is it for US, EU and many other countries to link trade deals with na-pak peace process? What are details here and what are guarantees offered in this arbitrary linking? If it is unfair at its base then who enforces any such guarantees and what happens if purvayers of arbitrary links themselves won't make pakis go wild for blackmailing Indians indirectly??

These countries themselves go to war so have we linked our food exports to world peace yet - can't Indians "impose things" on others in the name of peace even when others do?

How long will these arbitrary deals last in the first place when linked arbitrarily with na-pak peace process? Or are those instrument to blackmail more than trade deals because of its artificial links that our FM could have readily agreed to? Who would benefit from these unfair conditions?

vishvak, I do not know if it is the fear of loss of trade with the US & the EU that is behind the determined Indian efforts for peace talks with Pakistan. There will definitely be all sorts of pressures on India from the US and the EU. This is BAU. At any point of time, there are so many similar issues that confront India. Apart from real issues, we also tend to add imaginary issues to such a list. Effectively, we are afraid of the ghost and therefore we see one in every shadow. We are already running a huge trade deficit and some more is not going to add to our burden. We can link excess monsoon, or drought, or excess gold import or just about anything to justify our inaction. They are not the truth. The truth is we are timid and we want to procrastinate taking any decision.

We also need to maintain integrated border defense mechanisms- for example overwhelming response at all locations when ceasefire is violated with rushing more firepower at each location for complete destruction of barbarians attacking, or rushing to border in certain amount of time once contact is lost with jawans along with air cover to annihilate barbarians running away.

We are dealing with barbarians here and so we need to have better understanding of abnormal border. Instead we seem to be satisfied with huge song-n-dance for every little patchwork on borders facing the barbarians and playing to the gallery of blackmailers. Jawans on the border and families of jawans have to pay the price directly for these bloody shows.

What is meaning of borders once our jawans are attacked and for other cross border incidents?

Vishvak-> you are looking at it thinking that some of the Indian Elite Politicos, Media, IFS, NGO and useful idiots identify themselves as Indians or think of Indian interests.

Rather if they think that a nation is bunch of cows which needs to milked while it can and beef eaten once old, the actions of these personalities makes perfect sense. There interests are not Indian interests but personal Interests.
