Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
if this is the o/p from one of best cellphone cams the results are underwhelming .
a decent PS camera would beat it by some distance.
a DSLR with appropriate haze filter would make it a no-contest.
someone needs to put the sony RX100 1" sensor on a phone....sony itself could do that in some of its upcoming megaphones like the "honami" etc. or samsung could take advantage of its big phones and scare apple by using one. sony is seemingly unafraid to go its own way and experiment with its phones....like the new experia Z ultra as big as a sandwich.

Singha saar, GHQ had a P&S (coz she dropped her iPhunwa and shattered the glass), similar pic quality actually. BTW these pics are not full-res original shots, all are resized for web. As has been discussed before, these phone cams are replacing P&S, they will never replace DSLRs for those who really need DSLRs.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
somehow it could not tackle the haze? and overcast conditions well it seems. haze and fog often confuse the focus systems and exposure metering of much bigger cams.

Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
The high command has a nasty habit of taking out all the anger on the poor phone; I have been dispatched a RFP for a naya phone , after a cursory glance I have shortlisted Lumia 520 and 720. My mind says 520 is a good fit for someone who is not a gadget freak however I do not want to end in a situation when every day of my life starts with how kanjoos a person I am so even 720 is on the table . Need some Subedaar major level recommendation i.e. will 520 make the cut ?
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
520 will make the cut saar...as long as there are some diamonds served alongside...
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
It was a bit overcast but not too much...in fact it was hotter than I expected.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
520 lacks a flash. 620 has too small screen. either get the 720 if you must have it this month itself or wait one month and get the 625 which will have similar specs to 720 but a bigger 4.7" screen. I would say its worth the wait. 625 should have MRP around 14-15k.
625 has a bigger screen and inferior camera vs 720.

Nokia Lumia 625 (Green)
That's a bit high. I am sure a fast depreciating Re isn't helping either.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
in that case the 720 makes better sense. newer imports are sure going to rape us in prices
720 is already in stock at the old exchg rate.
after banning the import of flat screen TVs to revive the economy, perhaps Congis will ban the import of phones > 15K next to further revive the economy. or impose 100% customs duty on such "luxury" items.
it will back to the days of the nok 1110 torchlight phone...and with hungry congi zombies in the streets and power cuts at home we will need it.

No SMS is a big no no, high command like the GOI sends all directives in written onlee. I tell you these girls have a nasty habit of online chit chat , long SMS conversations and such vain activities .
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
720 is your escape route then. a bright yellow! or stretch budget a little and go for a 820 if you expect ownership cycle to be 3 yrs ... I know i know thats very rare these days!
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
I always wonder what is preventing phonewa s and tablets from having a naked screen look without valuable inches being wasted in the bezel area surrounding the display.Singha wrote:if this is the o/p from one of best cellphone cams the results are underwhelming .

For example in nexus 7, if one eliminates the bezel part and the inner display area expands to take up the space , we can have a nexus 9 with a nexus 7 form factor ( trading off the need for a front facing camera, ofcourse )
Is some unsurmountable ratio between screen area and battery size currently stopping us from doing this ?
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
behold the apple of china - xiaomi
it looks like iphone with a lumia back cover

Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
Cannot send SMS?
Why?
---
Bezel is required both for the touchscreen wiring and also as the display size gets larger, the inability of a user to grip the device by its sides onlee grows stronger hence you need a bezel area to hold the device. What will be seen in the future is the idea of "soft bezels" where the bezel is simulated by making certain parts of the display dead zones in a context aware fashion.

Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
iphones have only 2-3 mm of bezel along the sides the larger bezel area along the top and bottom edges are taken up by the speaker and home button respectively.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
Thanks for the gyaan as always RB ji
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
Thats becoz the iPhunwa is tall and narrow unlike the giant slabs the others make.negi wrote:iphones have only 2-3 mm of bezel along the sides the larger bezel area along the top and bottom edges are taken up by the speaker and home button respectively.

hmm...so this issue is specific to the lumia 822?Marten wrote:RB mullah: http://forums.wpcentral.com/nokia-lumia ... 9397-2.htm
After the Portico update, SMS died. :-(
I use Way2SMS these days. With 3g data packs being real cheap, hardly miss carrier sms now.
Folks are expecting Amber updates to help improve the situation. I think the access point app is crap. The rest is just fine.

Sony has been losing the market, used to be very popular , now its so hard to find someone having sony eric mobiles

Because there is no more Sony Ericsson, as Sony aquired the mobile business and its only Sony now. While its true that Sony Ericsson was continuously losing business and market share, Sony has been slowly surging again, especially after their new Xperia Z series. Internationally, they are already the third biggest smartphone player, after Apple and Samsung (though far smaller than both). They are improving both in quality and marketshare, IMHO. The Xperia Z has been one of the best, if not the best, smartphone this year and if the rumors are true, their next one (codenamed Honami), will be even better. I have high hopes for Sony in coming times. The upcoming PlayStation 4 has been received enthusiastically and looks poised to be a record breaking console, they have trimmed down the loss making TV business and their entertainment divison (Columbia tristar, BMG etc.) had a good last year.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
So all the WindowsPhone fans here going gaga over the Lumias, doesn't the lack of a unified messaging center bother you?
GB has certainly clawed back market share in India since its downfall in 2010. Sammy better up its game and stop relying on its strat-e-jee of spraying and praying turds. Customers are not stupid.

Off the top of my head, I dont remember - does iPad Mini have same aspect ratio as Nexus 7?negi wrote:RB IPad mini too has a very thin bezel as compared to Nexus.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
what ejatly is a unified messaging center? sounds more like a netz or avaya product than a phone app to me.
on my android i used the std email app for yahoo mail and the gmail app for gmail....no unification even now.
on my ipad I do have all accounts under one app but again its hardly a huge deal maker for me.

Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
^^^It is simply a term for a place where you can see any of the message alerts (txt, whatsapp, email etc.) in one place. In Android, its there when you drag down the tray from the top, similar in iOS (which copied Android). In WindowsPhone its missing so any message alert only shows up as a toast notification which disappears after a while. That is the #1 deficiency in WindowsPhone vs iOS/Android otherwise in terms of UX they got it pretty much nailed. I have observed a variety of non-techie folks across age/gender/ethnic categories try to use WP vs iOS vs Android UIs. With Android, its usually a look of supreme confusion and information overload. With iOS and WP, 1 or 2 pokes at the screen is all it takes for someone to get started typically and one can see the relief/slight sense of achievement when the device does what the user thinks it should do. This latter aspect is very important for new users as it provides them with a figurative life vest they can grab quickly and move on from there. Otherwise they are literally at sea.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
I onlee learnt last week that in call log of android, touching a entry and swiping right calls that number and swiping it left composes a SMS!
plus ofcourse android lets everyone add their own skin and apps on top which IOS and WP dont.
even if I manually disable some android app (which cannot be removed) it starts right up again when I reboot the phone it seems

"Which cannot be installed" ?
If you r rooted install free version of titanium back up and force uninstall the app.
Or just go to the apps folder change permission s if required and delete the nagging apk file (of course make sure that its not a system app)

can someone tell me why my iphone 4 goes buggy.. enlarged screens are norm of the day, it has to happen once. may be my kids are playing way too much games on it.
usually it takes 1 1/2 to 2 times enlargement.. now the fhucking thing has enlarged to about godzilla size. the slide to power off itself is hard to grab. struggling to shut it down.

That was my experience too between Android and iOS. Haven't tried WP for any length of time. Android might go phut due to UI/UX. Touch requires speed and for some reason, Android seems slow compared to iStuff.Raja Bose wrote:With Android, its usually a look of supreme confusion and information overload. I will be happy to drink the kool aid and live within a walled garden of ios/wp with a few well regarded apps and thats it - no more experimentation, no more visiting the app store and trying to see which of 1000 apps doing the same thing is worth the download and test time.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
It has nothing to do with touch or non-touch even though the difference is more jarring in case of touch based UI since it is a form of direct interaction. Its a tradeoff....Android is more open and less restrictive in what it allows and doesn't allow so user experience is not consistent in terms of performance whereas WP/iOS are much more restrictive in how an app runs and what it can do or cannot do so performance is consistent (in case of WP across multiple price points too which is an advantage it enjoys over Android). Android is great for trying out new stuff or innovating on the system level (it follows the old Symbian model of allowing access to just about everything), whereas WP/iOS are not that good in this aspect, due to the above reasons.matrimc wrote:Touch requires speed and for some reason, Android seems slow compared to iStuff.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
^^It can't be just about being more open. There must be some fundamental kernel level (scheduling, etc. ) issues in Android which cause it to demand more processing power and memory to deliver the same level of performance as WP and iOS. The UI skins and gimmicks added by OEMs make it worse. Although I love the Android interface (incidentally, the confusion stuff you mentioned earlier actually happened with me and iOS having been used to the Back and Settings buttons on Android phones) I tell people to stay away from it unless they are buying a top-of-the line handset or a Nexus device. The mid-level devices are a waste of money.
Re: Phone, Tablet and Gizmo Thread #0x02
Open != open source. Open as in Android allows you to do pretty much what you want with no OS mandated walls. iOS started the whole concept of really being restrictive so that no app is allowed to spoil the Mahdi blessed UX. Mickey once they rewrote their Windows from bottom up did the same.
