More and more Kenyans believe those soldiers methodically cleaned out the mall, and that the barrages of gunfire ringing out for days were being directed not at the last of the militants but at safes and padlocks to blast them open. Some business leaders even question whether the Kenyan army deliberately prolonged the crisis by saying shooters were still in the building when they were actually dead, to give themselves extra time to steal..........

Laptops, smartphones, Swiss watches, cameras, underwear, perfume and stereo speakers were all carried out of the mall, which was supposed to be tightly guarded by the military, owners said.....

nside the mall this week, the evidence of widespread theft was all around. Parking machines and cash registers were pried open and emptied. A huge, mounted flat-screen television had been lifted off the wall. Doors were wrenched open, and in several stores that showed no obvious signs of having been caught up in the fighting, display cases were ransacked.........

A Guardian story that attempts to give a comprehensive account. It seems that Kenyan Indian citizens were among the first to respond, arrived at the scene with weapons and saved many lives.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/intera ... #undefined
The picture that emerges is of a woefully disorganised response from authorities, where infighting and a clash of egos left a handful of Kenyan officers, an off-duty British soldier and an Israeli security agent, backed by Kenyan-Indian vigilantes, to fight heavily armed militants in a bid to rescue hundreds of shoppers....
Officers from Nairobi police’s flying squad arrived at the scene but initially refused to enter. Meanwhile, armed volunteers from a neighbourhood watch scheme run by Kenyan-Indians in the nearby district of Parklands arrived.

Together with at least two uniformed police, Musungu and his colleague, they numbered roughly 30 and split into two groups.
I want to know more about these Indian descent bravos who, to he disappointment of Zaid Hamid types, weren't cowering in their dhotis but decided to fight back.

An NYT story suggests they may have belonged to a local gun club.

Incidentally, watch the biases coming through. The Guardian story first calls them vigilantes. Then the Brit and the Israeli get top billing, even though there were probably ten times the number of Indians fighting.

^^ Funnily there was a story running in one of the "reputed" briturd rags about some SAS guy rescuing "hundreds" of mall goers to safety - when the total number of people in the mall was ~1000 at the time of the attack. It ran grabbing eyeballs for I think 2-3 days.

The briturds are feeling quite small these days looking at the spin and the great lengths their rags are going in printing their citizen's bravery accounts in the mall attack - while putting down the efforts of Kenyan soldiers in the same breath.

So Rahul Mehta was right about gun ownership rights in India! Only he wanted cannon!

Seriously most Western reporting from CNN onwards magnifies the role of any of their citizens and marginalizes the local.

So one or two Westerns will get more prominence than all the locals.

I guess the Kenyan Indians are getting recognition much later.

After Westgate Siege, New Respect for Kenya's Indians - NatG
Indians in Nairobi showed extraordinary courage in Westgate mall shootings.
Indian Nairobians were disproportionately affected by the killings, and they reacted with outsize selflessness. At the same time, Indian and black Kenyans were thrown together in a way they haven't been since the independence movement.

<snip>

I arrived at Westgate soon after the attack began to find that the number of unarmed Indians who'd rushed to the mall to help exceeded the number of armed Kenyan police who had.

Doctors and medical students had come from nearby Aga Khan Hospital; Indian shopkeepers were using their trucks as makeshift ambulances; Indians who lived near the mall came from their homes with trays of food and water. More quickly than seemed possible, a triage center had been set up at a Jain temple across the road from the mall. Volunteers at the temple fed soldiers, police, and reporters and hosted counseling sessions for days afterward.

all across africa there is a degree of resentment against indians, basically for being wealthier than the locals, running much of the commerce and a perception of colonialist behaviour - attitudes persist, right or wrong

footage released today of 4 terrorists walking around the mall with their weapons, looking around, very casual and calm. they do look somali, but are big, fit guys on the whole, well armed - and guess what? all frequently speaking on their mobiles...

where was the control centre? who was in it?

The Brits and others are getting much better coverage, to be expected because those are western news agencies. I wouldn't expect them to be any more objective than a local Arab one in the Gulf say, only more sophisticated. And they are, so some attempt at objectivity is there - hence the mention of Kenyan-Indian "vigilantes". However, in our media - that is to say the Indian ones mainly NDTV, TimesNow, Zee and so on - i have seen no mention about this. Not even to the extent of the BBC/CNN etc. Perhaps I just haven't seen it, though I watch regularly.

The "vigilantes" as the Guardians call them are anything but; they are a community protection/support group, and consists of Indian men who often patrol along with Kenyan policemen in police vehicles to ensure harmony, especially during tense times. They also patrol on their own, and the first course of action in case of observing difficulty is to inform the police (who, while not the most efficient or the least corrupt, are not the bumbling, uniformly corrupt, thieves that the British make them out to be. There are plenty of good men in action there). This community protection group has a well-organised warning and assembly system, which the ordinary people of the community know about. This group consists of men who have regular day time jobs/businesses etc.

In short, these group(s) are comprised of Indians (am not sure if they are only Indians) who have been here for a couple of centuries and know a thing or two about survival. A couple of months ago, I was out shooting with one of them who is a good friend. He had given his daughter a custom made rifle for her 10th or 11th birthday, and this shy, cute little girl whose milk-teeth had fallen out, and was indistinguishable from any Indian girl of her age, was right there shooting alongside us. Reminded me of Arya (yes, the one in Game of Thrones). Like I said, the Indians of East Africa are a slightly different bunch than you will find elsewhere.

Meanwhile, I met my Israeli acquaintance/friend from Westgate whom I have not mentioned earlier due to the possibility that he may have been killed by those Al Shabab pieces of trash. He survived, his boss was injured an his employee was killed. He is back in action, which is excellent. This is exactly what needed to be done.

Video of westgate mall terrorists

they have been named as well, and it is now thought that only 5-6 attackers were involved. some of the identified men are known members of al-hijra, an offshoot of al-shabab

9 bodies recovered from the rubble, most burned beyond recognition - families of those missing have been urged to give dna samples to aid identification

samantha lewthwaite is still being sought

Here's more. Al Shabaab leader believed killed by U.S. commandos: NYTimes
A U.S. Navy SEAL team is believed to have killed a senior leader of the al Shabaab militant group in a raid on his seaside villa in Somalia on Saturday
It said U.S. officials initially reported that the commandos had seized the Shabaab leader, but later backed off that account.

Only correction I would make there is "they will smoke them out if they can. Most others are empty vessels" - the rest of your post is on the money. The action is the mark of real power projection by a global military superpower. And it is an admirable operation by their special forces, if the reports so far are accurate.

Any further news on how the terrorists set up shop inside the mall. How they leveraged local help etc.? Looks like it is all quiet on that front. Did the shop they set up inside the mall was in the destroyed section of the mall?

Failed Navy SEALs raid on Somali target could bolster Al Shabab (+video)
by Mike Pflanz, csmonitor.com
October 6th 2013

A commando unit from the US Navy’s Seal Team Six launched an amphibious raid on a Somali town, but failed to confirm a capture or kill of their Al Shabab target, suspected to be linked to Nairobi’s Westgate mall terror attack.

The operation could have opposite its intended result of discouraging further attacks. Analysts warn that even earlier successful targeted strikes against Al Shabab, a Somalia-based Islamist militant group, failed to curb the group's capacity to carry out international terror attacks, and that failed missions could in fact bolster its support and recruitment.

The predawn raid Saturday came unstuck when the US troops were faced with heavier-than-expected return fire, and pulled out to avoid civilian casualties, two security sources said. No Americans were injured.

Although the target was not named and officially described only as “high-value,” US officials suggested the raid was “prompted by Westgate”.

Saturday’s mission took place in Baraawe, an Al Shabab stronghold 110 miles south of Mogadishu, where US Special Forces carried out a daytime raid in 2009 to kill Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, wanted in connection with earlier terrorist strikes in East Africa.

In Saturday's raid, the commandos came ashore in speedboats and immediately focused their assault on a beachside villa where it is understood that the target had been staying, the Associated Press reported.

However a dozen Al Shabab fighters returned fire and threw grenades, a source in Mogadishu says, and the Seals’ commanders made the call to pull out to avoid civilian casualties. Helicopter gunships launched from military vessels offshore arrived to provide cover for the retreating troops, according to reports from eyewitnesses.

The target building was known as a safe house for foreign fighters who had traveled to Somalia to fight with Al Shabab. Ahmed Godane, also known as Mukhtar Abu al-Zubayr and the leader of the group’s hardline faction that claimed responsibility for the Nairobi shopping center attack, had stayed there before but it was not clear how recently.

Several Somali news sites claimed that Godane was in a nearby house but escaped, although these reports could not immediately be verified.

The US Rewards for Justice program offers a $7 million reward for information about his whereabouts. US officials in Nairobi who spoke to the Monitor, and government spokesmen in Washington, refused to confirm or deny that Godane was the raid’s target. An Al Shabab spokesman did not return emails for comment Sunday.

Several senior Al Shabab or Al Qaeda commanders have been killed in targeted strikes inside Somalia in recent years, including Mr. Nabhan.
Fazul Mohammed, Al Qaeda’s leader in East Africa who was accused of masterminding the bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, died at a Mogadishu roadblock in 2011.

“There is an obvious reason to take these guys out, but it’s been done and still you get Shabab being capable of arranging, or helping to arrange, Westgate,” says one Western security source in Nairobi who spoke anonymously because of their employer’s restrictions on speaking to the press.

“Shabab is constantly shifting. There are leaders on the ground, then guys who are kind of advisors, guys with experience of bomb-making and guerrilla tactics," he says. “If you kill one, there’s another to take over. Godane, if he was the target, would have been a big kill, but the increasingly hardline of his faction in Shabab would bounce back.”

The way that the Westgate attack took days to resolve, coupled with the failure of the US team Saturday to capture their target, would allow Al Shabab to “boast of its power” and attract new recruits, the source adds.

Journal connects Britain's 'White Widow' to al Shabaab terror group
foxnews.com | Oct 13th 2013

A Kenyan intelligence report and excerpts from the personal journal of a suspected terrorist known as the “White Widow,” reveal new details about the inner workings of the al Shabaab terror network, which masterminded last month’s deadly attack on a Nairobi mall.

Sky News obtained the 35-page report, which indicates that “White Widow” Samantha Lewthwaite is a central figure in al Shabaab, plotting several terror attacks across Kenya. The British Lewthwaite, 29, is called the “White Widow” because she was married to one of the suicide attackers responsible for the deadly bombings on a London subway and bus in 2005 that killed 52 people and injured 700 more.

The report also indicates the group was apparently planning multiple attacks targeting Kenyan parliament buildings, UN offices in Nairobi, restaurants and a series of assassinations focusing on senior politicians within Kenya.

The intelligence report provides a detailed breakdown of how the terror network operates throughout Africa, with recruits and cells working in a range of countries including Tanzania, Mali, South Africa, Somalia, Uganda, Burundi, and Zambia, as well as efforts in Pakistan and Yemen.

Al Shabaab’s stronghold and focus is in Kenya with major bases in the capital Nairobi, and Mombasa, the report suggests.

The report is damaging for Kenyan authorities because it suggests there were clear warnings up to eight months ago that a "Mumbai-style attack" was being planned in Nairobi on the Westgate shopping mall.

Lewthwaite is referred to as a "logistician" within a six-person terror cell, which the Kenyans believe was coordinated by Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulkadir, who is also known as Ikrima.

Ikrima is a Kenyan who the authorities believe has been promoted to al Shabaab leadership. He was the target of a recent U.S. Navy SEALs' mission to "capture or kill" him in the Somalian port town of Barawe. The operation was aborted when the SEALs encountered tougher resistance than expected and saw children in his compound.

Other members of the terror cell Ikrima was co-ordinating include Fahmi Jamal Salim-- apparently the cell leader-- who intelligence agencies believe is now married to the White Widow.

Kenyan intelligence believes Lewthwaite was living in an exclusive villa in Mombasa while plotting the attacks. When police raided her home, the mother-of-four was not there but police say they discovered a stash of ammunition and a laptop with a journal Lewthwaite had been writing.

A look at Lewthwaite’s personal diary sheds light on her love for her husband and how she’s raising her children, according to the Sky report. She writes about how two of her children want to emulate their father, London bomber Jermaine Lindsay.

Lewthwaite’s journal goes on to express her commitment to her Muslim faith and her gratitude for being married to a shaheed (martyr,) Lindsay.

The diary may have been notes for a book Lewthwaite was working on, entitled “I Want To Be A Mujahid,” (Islamic military fighter).
