The killing added to an impression of increased turbulence for the militant groups harbored in Pakistan’s tribal belt, including Al Qaeda, the Pakistani Taliban and the Haqqani network. Over just two months, one major leader has been arrested, two have been killed in a drone strike, and now a major financier — Mr. Haqqani — has died.
The link, if any, between those events remains hidden in the miasma of tribal politics, skulduggery and treachery that has for centuries haunted the rugged frontier between Pakistan and Afghanistan. But many are taking the violence as a portent of increased upheaval as rival intelligence services and militant groups vie for power and influence ahead of the withdrawal of American combat troops from the region next year.
The first major shot came when American forces detained Latif Mehsud, a senior commander for the Pakistani Taliban, inside Afghanistan. Weeks later, on Nov. 1, a C.I.A. drone strike killed the Pakistani Taliban’s leader, Hakimullah Mehsud, and a top deputy. Now, Mr. Haqqani, a looming figure in a militant network closely allied with the Taliban and Al Qaeda, is dead.
There was no claim of responsibility for Mr. Haqqani’s death, although conflicting views about the identity of his killers abounded. Afghan intelligence officials quickly blamed an internal Haqqani family dispute. But among Pakistani spymasters, speculation was rife that their Afghan counterparts had ordered the hit, possibly through a network of Afghan operatives in Pakistan.
In any case, the fact that he was killed on the very edge of Islamabad, the capital, is likely to discomfit the Pakistani government and military, which have long faced accusations that they allow the Haqqanis and other militant groups nearly complete freedom of movement within the country.
Another Haqqani network commander, speaking on the condition of anonymity from Peshawar, claimed that militants had mourned Mr. Haqqani at a prayer service right under the nose of the Pakistani military, at a secret spot in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad. The commander said that Mr. Haqqani’s body was then sent back to the tribal belt for burial.
“Another Abottabad? Massive Embarrassment,” Talat Hussain, a Pakistani television journalist, said on Twitter, referring to the American commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, near Islamabad, in 2011.
Nasiruddin Haqqani, who shuttled between the tribal belt and the Islamabad area, was sometimes described as one of the group’s liaisons with the Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency.
American, German and British officials saw Nasiruddin Haqqani, whose mother is Arab and who spoke Arabic, as the crucial link between the network and the legitimate businesses in the Persian Gulf area that it profits from.
On Monday, a Pakistani intelligence official, speaking on the customary condition of anonymity, said that Nasiruddin Haqqani was buried in the same graveyard as his brother, in Danday Darpa Khel — the village where Hakimullah Mehsud, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, was killed in a drone strike.

WASHINGTON: A Pakistani living legally in the United States has been charged with attempting to join an al Qaeda linked militant group after falling for an FBI sting, the Justice Department said Tuesday.Basit Javed Sheikh, 29, contacted an undercover FBI agent, believing him to be a member of Jabhat al-Nusrah, which the State Department identifies as a Syrian al Qaeda affiliate.According to the US attorney's office in North Carolina, where Sheikh was charged last week, he expressed his wish to go to Syria “to help the mujahideen...in any way I can.” Asked how he planned to help, Sheikh responded “logistics, media, fight too, God willing,” according to the statement.According to a 25-page affidavit from FBI agent Jason Maslow, Sheikh told him in an online voice call that he was ready to “be a martyr” for the struggle.
The agent also described how, starting in April 2013, the Pakistani posted several times on Facebook in support of Jabhat al-Nusrah, one of Syria's most prominent armed Islamist groups.Sheikh was arrested on November 2 at the Raleigh-Durham airport in North Carolina just before boarding a plane. The destination on his one-way ticket was Beirut, Lebanon, and he allegedly planned to cross the border into Syria, believing that the undercover FBI agent would be able to help.If he is found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of up to 15 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 and three years supervised release.

Our noxious Islamic nostalgia
Our noxious Islamic nostalgia
We are told that we are the fortress of Islam, which none in the Muslim world accepts us as. That Pakistan is the leader of the Muslim ummah is a concept never conceded by any country in the Islamic world as it lacks historical evidence and necessary voltage. That Afghans are forever indebted to us for hosting them for 30 years and helping them to fight their war of resistance is the misconception scorned by the Afghans. Mounted knights of the imperial cavalry are never indebted to their horse grooms; they merely pay for services, and that is what we were. That we have a geo-strategic significance and are a nuclear power, whose arsenal and geography are fast becoming a liability and could soon become relatively redundant. Finally, it is drummed into us, mostly from the pulpit, that we create awe in India, which is somewhat amusing and none really cares about it there except for our latest nuisance: the worrisome militancy. All our manufactured national premises seem to be slanted and are coming apart. It has been a deliberately designed, conceptual tragedy of cinematic proportions. As a result, we are still pitiably groping for a national vision and identity even after 65 years of wavering statehood.
Nations of the world are distancing themselves from us thinking we are a mischievous, nettlesome and irresponsible crowd, whose nuclear arsenal is considered a potential threat to the world. That we foster militancy and terrorism by choice and are dubious by volition. This is not a very nice view of a nation that wishes to be regarded well. But then we have to first deserve what we demand to be seen as. National power, prestige and esteem are neither found in the IMF vaults nor in the murky world of wishful thinking. Ever noticed how shabbily Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was treated after being officially invited over to visit the US? He was literally shouted out and Pakistan called all sorts of names after his address to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, just before his meeting with President Barack Obama. This is what happens to those who live on the other’s dole and still think they are equals. Shoeshine and the lord master are never equals.. It was a show of moral and mental bankruptcy, one must say. . Also we must realise the horrific insensitivity of the very poor esteem in which Pakistan and its people are held by the policy makers in the US. What a terrible wastage of our national effort and time chasing a worthless mirage of partnership and phantom common interests with the imperious US.
We never wanted to see that our relations were transactional and not strategic, nor based on any lasting commonality of interests and sublime perceptions. Therefore, we did not really have to cosy up to the US the way we did, and now have had to behave like a luckless mistress just as their global interests pull them away from Pakistan and closer to India and Afghanistan. What in heavens are we doing to ourselves? The country’s collective drift into oblivion and our suicidal sleepwalk into humanity’s black hole must stop. We have already reached the precipice and are about to tip over. The entire governance structure is shuddering; it is full of holes and corrupt to the core. The state is dissolving. It is ominously collapsing inwards on itself. Our sovereignty has become the butt of jokes and the writ of the government is mostly a farce. Government officials are extremely insecure, and, therefore, invariably shrink from making hard decisions for fear of reprisals. The judiciary set hardened terrorists scot-free on flimsy grounds. Lucrative police stations and immigration posts at international exits are auctioned for huge sums. The police is paralysed by corruption and crippled by bureaucracy and politicians.

Pakistan U-turn at WTO foxes India
Pakistan was part of a proposal made by G-33 — a developing country alliance comprising Indonesia, India and China, among others — to get WTO to drop a provision that allows developing countries to provide only 10% of the value of goods as domestic support and also puts caps on maintaining food stocks.
While the developing countries have been pushing for amendments to remove the anomaly, in recent weeks, just as things started going their way, Pakistan has started raising concerns about gains that would accrue to India if the move goes through at next month's meeting of trade ministers in Bali. Pakistan has started arguing that with the benefit in its bag, India will start using the rice stocks for exports, which will adversely hit exports from across the border. The argument is similar to those by the US and other developed countries that have been seeking to block the flexibility. Although they have virtually agreed not to drag countries to WTO's dispute body if the 10% ceiling is breached, the developed countries want certain safeguards such as an assurance that the food stocks will not be exported.
Re: Terrorist Islamic Republic of Pakistan - Aug 21, 2013
Anindya, I don't know why they gave the caption that India was 'foxed'. The report is very clear as to why Pakistan takes the stance it has taken. The Pakistanis themselves have explained it unambiguously. If, India gets foxed by a Pakistani move even after 66 years, it speaks poorly of Indian bureaucrats, politicians and policy makers.

From the BBC. Looks like the Pakis are trying to cover up their state support for Haqqani.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24917809
At first it appeared as if two men had been injured in a gun attack at a bread shop in the eastern suburbs of Pakistan's capital, Islamabad - just a routine shooting, a senseless crime in a large city.
But eyewitnesses noticed a number of aberrations. Some told local press that the police who arrived at the crime scene collected bullet casings and other evidence and then washed the area down to clean away the blood stains.
One of the injured was taken to a nearby house, witnesses said. Later, the injured man - or was he dead by then? - was put in a vehicle and driven away in the presence of senior police officers.
Local police registered a report saying unknown assailants on a motorbike injured a naan-bread maker at a suburban market. When confronted by the reporters, they denied there had been a second injured man.
The capital's main hospitals also reported only one casualty from the scene - one Mohammad Farooq, the naan maker.
But by mid-afternoon on Monday rumours were swirling that the second mystery man hit in the attack was in fact Nasiruddin Haqqani, a key leader of the so-called Haqqani network, considered one of the deadliest Afghan Taliban groups fighting Western forces in Afghanistan.
Confirming the rumours, a relative of Mr Haqqani told BBC his body had been spirited from Islamabad to the town of Miranshah in North Waziristan - roughly six hours drive across two provinces and one federal tribal territory, all dotted with heavily-manned military and police checkpoints.
There are obvious reasons for this cover-up.
For years, Pakistan has been accused by the West of backing the Haqqani network to counter the influence of arch-rival India in Afghanistan, a charge it denies.
So the idea that some of the group's key leaders were freely moving around in Islamabad - and even had a permanent home in the city, as has become apparent following the attack - could cause the country some embarrassment, a reminder of what it faced in 2011 when al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed by the Americans in a Pakistani city.

Sir: Bad news emerges from Syria where 13 children have been diagnosed with the feared polio virus. Aside from this news, it is being reported that the strain causing these fresh polio cases is one that originated in Pakistan with the threat of spreading across the whole Middle East. This will have awful consequences for us Pakistanis as we will no doubt be subjected to even harsher travel bans. The green passport already makes international travel extremely bothersome but now our problems will be elevated to a whole new level.

The murder of Nasiruddin “will pile pressure on the Pakistani government,” reports The BBC, since the death took place on its soil. The US has long accused Pakistan’s ISI of supporting the Haqqani network, “as a key proxy in the Afghan war,” reports the Associated Press. It’s an accusation Pakistani officials have denied.Nasiruddin represented the Haqqani network in the Taliban’s effort to set up a political office in Doha earlier this year for peace talks with the US, and he was expected to play a role in peace negotiations between the Afghan government and Taliban.“Afghan authorities will be angry that someone who had been working to facilitate peace moves with the Afghan Taliban has been removed from the picture,” reports the BBC.According to CBS, a source from the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) said there was friction between them and the Haqqani network. TTP leader,
Hakimullah Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone strike earlier this month, had previously referred to “the Haqqani brothers as ‘puppets’ of the country’s intelligence agency….”Just last week, The New York Times reported on emerging fractures in the Haqqani network at home in Afghanistan.
…[M]urmurs of discontent have broken out on the Haqqanis’ home turf. As the Haqqanis themselves — Jalaluddin and Sirajuddin, his son, who now leads the group — shelter across the border in Pakistan, support has turned to resentment in some corners. Most startlingly, leaders of Mr. Haqqani’s native Zadran tribe in Khost Province say they have formally broken with the feared militant network.“The tribe now understands who Mr. Haqqani works for,” said Faisal Rahim, a former Haqqani commander and head of the Zadran Tribal Council, referring to Pakistan’s support for the network. “His war is not a holy war. It’s a war for dollars, for Pakistani rupees and for power.”By all accounts, the Haqqani network remains a potent source of concern for American military commanders and counterterrorism experts. It has kept up its barrage of attacks on Kabul and its global fund-raising campaign. But the changing attitudes among some in Afghanistan show how much the years of war have changed the social landscape — and, particularly, how deep the distrust of foreign influence runs among Afghans, even when it comes to favorite sons. The shift has come gradually over the past few years, as fighters loyal to the Haqqanis have killed an increasing number of the tribe’s elders for refusing to afford them food and shelter, according to tribal authorities, former Haqqani commanders and Afghan officials.

India on Alert Against Polio Import - The Hindu
All States with international borders have been put on alert to reduce the risk of importation of poliovirus from neighbouring countries in the wake of a polio outbreak in Syria.
As many as 102 vaccination posts have been set up along the international borders: with Pakistan at 5 points, with Nepal at 88 points and with Bangladesh at two points, the others being along the Myanmar and Bhutan borders.
“The government is mindful of risk of poliovirus importation… in view of the continuing polio transmission in the remaining endemic countries and the outbreaks in Syria and the Horn of Africa region,” said Health and Family Welfare Secretary Keshav Desiraju.
WHO, UNICEF begin massive response
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Children’s Fund have begun the largest-ever, consolidated emergency immunisation response in the Middle East, aiming to vaccinate over 20 million children in seven countries and territories repeatedly. They are Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza, Syria and Turkey.
In campaigns in and around Syria, to prevent transmission of polio and other preventable diseases, more than 6,50,000 children have been vaccinated including 1,16,000 in the highly-congested northeast Deir-ez-Zor Province where the outbreak was confirmed a week ago.
In a region that did not see polio for nearly a decade, poliovirus has been detected, in the last 12 months, in sewage samples from Egypt, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The first polio outbreak in Syria since 1999 has so far left 10 children paralyzed, and poses a risk of paralysis to hundreds of thousands of children across the region. Preliminary evidence indicates that the poliovirus is of Pakistani origin and is similar to the strain detected in Egypt, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Back home in India, all possible measures are being taken to maintain immunity of children. The entire network is now geared to strengthening Routine Immunisation, which is the key to ensuring a polio-free India until the risk of the infectious viral disease is eliminated from the world.
“Any case of importation will be dealt with as an emergency. For the past two years, the polio programme has been preparing and renewing its Emergency Preparedness and Response Capacity. All States have an emergency response plan. Rapid Response Teams have been formed, trained and reoriented in their role for polio emergency response,” Mr. Desiraju said.
The polio virus usually infects children in unsanitary conditions through faecal-oral transmission associated with close person-to-person contact and consumption of food and drink contaminated with faeces. It attacks the nerves and can kill or paralyse, spreading widely and unnoticed before it starts crippling children. For every one case of polio, 200 children can be infected. There is no cure for polio — it can only be prevented through immunisation, said a joint statement by WHO and UNICEF.
“While India has stopped poliovirus transmission, the risk of importation of polio from areas with currently active transmission remains very high. {Indian leaders or officials do not want to openly name Pakistan whether it is terrorism, polio, fundamentalism, extremism, perfidy or whatever. They always beat about the bush. This is one such case} Surveillance for polio continues to be highly sensitive to ensure rapid detection of poliovirus anywhere in the country. It is critical for India to ensure high population immunity through poliovirus campaigns and routine immunisation and to be in a state of readiness to respond to a poliovirus importation if it occurs,” said WHO Representative to India Nata Menabde.
According to Anisur Rahman Siddique, Programme Specialist, Polio, UNICEF India, the outbreak in the Middle East, which was polio-free for over a decade, is a reminder that polio anywhere is a threat to unprotected children everywhere.

Actually, it has been pretty depressing the past few weeks or even months. There has been several starts, but no one reached a half century or a century for several weeks now. Everyday I log into these websites to see something spectacular. But nothing seems to happen. Even players from Karachi has gone quiet. What is going on??? What a waste of all the talent they have...SSridhar wrote:Another normal day in Pakistan.

You should blame this slow down from boundaries and sixers to singles or twos on the death of Ustaad-Suicide-Bombing, Qari Akhtar. That was a real loss. It does not matter much if a Baitullah or a Hakimullah dies. But, Qari was a real Ustaad, a real techie in these matters and a real motivator too.rgsrini wrote:What is going on??? Iran backed out of pipeline deal, not us TFTAs
Iran backed out of pipeline deal, not us TFTAs

I guess that is the paki way of putting a spin on "We were severely abused by Iran which ended the deal by flashing a bunch of middle fingers"Federal Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar has claimed that the Government of Pakistan will not abandon the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project under the US pressure but it was actually Iran which had backed out of financing the project, despite an earlier promise.
Ishaq Dar said that he had recently met the Iranian finance minister on the sidelines of the World Bank (and got an earful from him, hain ji?)and IMF meetings in the US. He told his Iranian counterpart that Iran had promised to provide $500 million for the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project. (hallucinations after smoking strong herbs)

US and Pakistan: More alike than you think
US and Pakistan: More alike than you think

I still hold that there are more similarities between our societies than the average American or Pakistani is aware of.For example there’s the fascination for WWE wrestling. The average American redneck would be surprised to learn that the average Pakistani also considers WWE wrestling to be an actual sport and not a dramatised spectacle of stunts, and gets as much pleasure from watching two over-sized males in skimpy clothing, yelling obscenities and pretending to beat each other up, as his white counterpart. The majority of young people in both societies also prefer slapstick humor and horsing around more than some sophisticated, complicated comedy.
Both American and Pakistani societies are heavily in debt and spend more than they earn. The disparity between the rich and poor is colossal while many rich people lead unashamedly ostentatious lifestyles and blame the poverty of the homeless on God’s natural law of selection or simply laziness.
Both consider TV preachers to be the most learned scholars and historians around, since they are able to provide irrefutable proof of how only people from their own particular religious group will be granted entry into heaven, while those of all other religions, as well as homosexuals, drug addicts, social rights activists, atheists and socialists will burn in eternal hell fire for their sins.
Both the average American and average Pakistani don’t have access to a social health care system and consider all illnesses to be punishments from God for our own loose morals. Both have a fascination for guns and weapons and prefer to be counted amongst the hunters rather than gatherers and farmers. Both consider shooting a gun to be the best form of aphrodisiac together with **** and other potency concoctions. Both average Americans and Pakistanis are fascinated by cults and conspiracies, and consider aliens or djinns to be behind most unexplained phenomena. Both countries have regularly produced mass murderers and serial killers, though in Pakistan they are sometimes also called martyrs when they’re killed. The average citizens of both countries love watching violent and gory movies where the story-line of good versus evil is kept simple and to the point.I can go on…
Both prefer going to a strip joint strip or watching a mujrah dance rather than some complicated refined dance, which is trying to be artistic.
Both societies have serious heroine addiction problems.
Both love watching and betting on boring ball games on television and love taking part in lotteries.
Both Americans and Pakistanis prefer not to get involved in the foreign policies of their governments or question the interventions of their militaries and spy agencies in countries that are supposed to be their allies.Citizens from both countries have a ‘chosen race/country syndrome’.Both have a soft spot for military dictators with moustaches, though the average American prefers them to be outside of his/her own country…

The Polio article says this
If the WHO is pointing out that Pakistan is the source of the new outbreak of Polio virus, what is the point of having so few checkposts at Pakistan border but so many at Nepal unless the MHA has said most of the TSP migrants are crossing over from Nepal? Or is this another MMS confidence building measure towards Pakistan!!!
Looks like Indian Health Minstry has some morons. As many as 102 vaccination posts have been set up along the international borders: with Pakistan at 5 points, with Nepal at 88 points and with Bangladesh at two points, the others being along the Myanmar and Bhutan borders.

Brought from Nukkad dhaga
Lot of paki pasand pappi jhappi happening in comment section - many of them are not even Indians (goras , Pakis , BDs etc aplenty )
Looks like pushing this amankitamasha bandwagon is one of the immediate quid pro quo by Google for Pakis for lifting YouTube ban by its govt in October.
Anyway this interference by google into indopak equation and funneling pakipasand psyops targeted at Indian youth is unprecedented and again reveals unkils dirty hand acting behind the scenes - prepping the Indians for a tame giveaway of indian territory of Kashmir , Siachen,Sir creek and what not to the tunes of pakipasand pappi jhappi.
In this connection a portion of Atri ji's post from yesterday.
YouTube video in question.

One of the most popular मराठा म्हणावे अश्या वाघराला (he, oh men, is true maratha) series.
one of the most popular verse of this series is this -
सुधांशूस पाहता उफाळे समुद्र,
अफझल्यास पाहता शिवरायरक्त,
पाहताच संतापतो पाकड्याला,
''मराठा''म्हणावे अश्या वाघराला.
Like Oceans arouse by the effect of moon,
Like Shivaji's blood shot upon seeing Afzal khan,
when a person rages similarly upon a seeing a Paki,
that tiger, oh men, is maratha..
