Don't you also have to say, "Shameful on BJP part to do this". If AJ has reservations why didn't he ask Congis to remove them?

He approves and cribs about it? I can imagine this bill's majority target will be BJP. It is as much in the interest of BJP not to become victim of its own making.

anti-BJP bias? :rotfl:

True enough, but that is not something that the Punjab government can do. Also, now that they have a BJP government in Rajasthan, maybe they should try to sell power to Rajasthan first, before trying to sell it to Pakistan.

IIRC, the plan to sell power to Pakistan was initiated by the Centre (we had Manmohan making a lot of noise about it) and SS Badal just went along with the proposal, because he saw no other way to offload the extra power in the lean season.

yeah, It is MMS tamasha, everyone here knows that and has been discussed in other threads.

exactly!! Punjab Government does not own these power plants. The power plant to Goindwal Sahib is owned by GVK which is company owned by G.V Krishna Reddy. It is 600MW

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/GVK

http://www.business-standard.com/articl ... 370_1.html

Talwandi Sabo plant is owned by Talwandi Sabo Power Limited., developed by Sterlite Energy limited a Vedanta group company, at an approximate cost of Rs 11,000 crore. It is 660 MW

Then this Gidderbaha Power Plant

http://www.pspcl.in/docs/gidderbaha_plant.htm
The contracted capacity of the plant is 2400 MW± 10% (2160MW – 2640 MW). The name of the Project is Gidderbaha Thermal Power Project. The Project will be developed on “BOO” basis through tariff based competitive process and as per the Guidelines issued by Ministry of Power, Govt.of India.

---

Punjab government cannot sell electricity which is owned by the companies (BOO basis) and Central government of India. Badal and his ilks at best can only invite the industry to come to Punjab since power is available.

Now! If these power companies who are building these decide to sell to Pakistan who will need to stop them?

From the numbers in the survey for AP, it shows 2 to BJP, 18 to TDP, 8 to YSRC and 10 to TRS and 3 to INC and 1 to MIM. This tells that TDP is on a revival path and YSRC is blunted. That 10 TRS, 3 INC, 1 MIM and 2 BJP is all from Telangana and 1 more seat is either going to TDP or YSRC. If TDP and BJP go in a coalition this is very much true. TRS+INC in T is 13 which is the sweep that they can get either the state is divided or not divided. The most important thing here is 17 TDP and 8 YSRC makes 25 and all from non-T region.

Added later:

Based on the survey comments and description, Modi factor is there in AP and that is going to work as a catalyst for TDP if they go for a pre-poll alliance. I think both parties have done extensive surveys to get to a point where the central BJP command is overriding the state unit on the decision.

it will not work out that way. TRS is way over-inflated. they will get 5 at max. rest will go to INC if BJP-TDP don't have a pre-poll agreement.
even if they do have an agreement, and BJP votes against T-bill, it will mean INC will easily get 10-12 from T. rest will go to TRS. both BJP and TDP will get wiped out of T.

in SA. INC will easily manage 5 seats. don't underestimate them. they're not done yet. YSRC might get 7-10. rest will go to TDP.
we should be ready to accept that even with all the mess in AP, BJP-TDP together might get no more than 15-18 altogether.

if the "Modi wave" is serious, then there might really be chance to squeeze INC, YSRC, and TRS. but in all likelihood, 20 is the upper ceiling for BJP-TDP in AP.

Congress loss in 4 states made Lokpal Bill top priority for govt
With the government accepting all the select committee's recommendations, the vastly transformed bill will be considered afresh by Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Once both Houses approve the legislation, it will be sent to President Pranab Mukherjee for notification.

<snip>

According to the Lokpal Bill passed by the Rajya Sabha, an official will not be given a hearing at the stage of a preliminary inquiry. This was part of the select committee's unanimous recommendations tabled in Parliament more than a year ago.

<snip>

The bill brings the PM under its purview with certain safeguards. It also covers ministers and MPs besides all government employees.

<snip>

Except for the BJP's demand that there should not be a provision for religion based reservations in the lokpal, the government accepted all the suggestions of the main opposition party without which it was not possible to pass the bill. The government saw the issue as one of representation rather than reservation.

<snip>

Left parties' demand to bring the private sector and NGOs under the lokpal was also not accepted. The CPM leader Sitaram Yechury, therefore, moved an amendment to bring public-private-partnership (PPP) projects in the ambit of the lokpal but it was defeated overwhelmingly by 151 against 19 votes.

<snip>

Defending the inclusion of judges in the lokpal panel, Sibal said it was done as "complex legal" issues are involved. Lawmakers cannot be part of it as it involves conflict of interest, he said.

12:25 pm: Rahul Gandhi says six more bills need to be passed Rahul Gandhi also spoke in favour of the Lokpal Bill and said that the UPA government had been working to battle corruption in the country and said the Lokpal was one of many legislation it had formulated to battle it. "The Lokpal Bill is not adequate to fight corruption in this country. We need a comprehensive anti-corruption code," he said. I believe it is responsibility of Lok Sabha to ensure six other bill related to corruption are passed, he said.

Nice, so the next PM will be always hobbled by this stupid law. People arguing against FDI in retail and other areas should also fight against FDI in NGO first. Last several years has been governance through NGO and look at where we are. If you are not strong and morally weak like Congress you will cede to the people like Anna Hazare. If you are sure of your governance, people like Anna have no place to do grandstanding. This is as bad a development like CVB and BJP too is supporting it.
Kejriwal and his ilk is as dangerous to India as Congress is. His want was to control people not govern. Now that he is close to getting to govern, he is scared witless and doing all sorts of drama to avoid it. Pity the people who trusted and voted for this guy and his party.
The only saving grace is ascension of NaMo and hope he puts these guys in their place. And people in BJP where against it too.

The chota mota congressi neta, the foot soldiers who lost in Delhi badly and that I got to speak with was not fully comprehending that at the highest levels their netas had turned for AAP in order to hobble NaMo. But the Congress high command would do it only for its own benefit and not that of the foot soldier (sacrifice-able) or even for AAP. IMO this shows that there are gaps in the Congress-AAP combine which can be exploited. The foot soldiers lost to AAP and they are upset at AAP not at BJP. By the time NaMo does his job the dynasty would be gone for good and in the medium term 2-4 years, the country would rather require some good netas from Congress itself (new PVNRs). There is no other party that can do it.

In the shorter term (3 months to 2 years) in Delhi, we have got to realize that a good 1/3rd of the base of AAP is actually BJP base that got poached while 2/3rd would ordinarily have been a Congress base.

Now the real icing on the cake would be the formation of AAP government in Delhi with the support of Congress. That would bring back the BJP base that got poached even while the base that BJP has poached from Congress would, I expect still remain strong for the General Elections. In fact I would not be surprised if NaMo is able to take all 7 seats of Delhi if the AAP forms a government right now with Congress. NaMo and Delhi BJP should be able to convince even the new found AAP voters to change horses.

The fact remains a lot of BJP supporters ended up supporting Anna only because Delhi BJP did nothing and was sitting idle. This is why we should have had NaMo and his team in place in the initial stages of IAC itself. That would have protected BR too and bringing the German government data to India would have been a real talking point in the MSM. But all is not lost yet BJP can get a lot going on the national scene in next few days. Good thing is the removal of this bill from the mindspace ensures that AAP will deal with Congress in the same manner as SaPa and BaSaPa deal with Congress, which ensures that credibility and capability do not flow from one to the other.

Agreed ravi_g. The years wasted under tepid central BJP leadership is the cause. None of the exposes or protests that caught the public eye can be credited to BJP. The leader of opposition is reduced to giving fine speech in the Parliament and getting brownie points after ceding space.

Lokpal Bill passed in LS: Anna the winner, Kejriwal the whiner
It’s likely that despite their intense struggle for the institution of Lokpal, Kejriwal and his team will be seen as losers and perennial whiners; as a bunch of inflexible people incapable of listening to the other view and making pragmatic compromises for the sake of a noble cause.

For the record, his team still calls the government’s Lokpal Bill ‘Jokepal’ and finds absolutely no merit in it while Anna and his group of activists have found the bill satisfactory. Now that the bill has been cleared in Parliament, it is seen as Anna’s bill as having received the endorsement of the House, not Kejriwal’s. The end result: Anna climbs in public perception while Kejriwal shrinks. It might be counterproductive to his politics too.

<snip>

Anna will be the toast of the nation, and will be hailed as the statesman-philosopher-doer. His haloed status could possibly drive Kejriwal and his group to irrelevance. Expect the latter to be scathing on the bill now, but they are likely to find few takers. For a party which has put all its eggs in one basket – the Aam Aadmi Party has not spoken on any other issue beyond Lokpal so far – it is a complex problem.

<snip>

Once Anna and his group perch themselves on the moral high ground, projecting themselves as the most important civil society voice in the country, they can easily occupy the rebel-reformist space occupied by the Kejriwal group. They can come up with ideas for change and the government and parties would be happy to do business with them since they are more amenable to reason. The irony in the entire situation is that Kejriwal is now in direct competition with Anna and he stands to lose everything if plays his cards wrong. The fact that he has launched a political party now and is part of the political circus makes him a smaller threat to other politicians. He is no more the voice of the apolitical civil society – Anna has taken over that credit - thus he could be handled politically. How Kejriwal positions himself post the passage of the Lokpal Bill would be interesting to note.

Delhiites want Kejriwal to form the government
Party sources claim that roughly 70-80 per cent people, who have taken part in the referendum, want Kejriwal to become chief minister and run the government with the outside support from the Congress.

Delhites always wanted a congress government. But they want some new paint and varnish. It will be boring otherwise even at work and hence they paint our walls, change the tables and chairs. Once in a while laptops and also every year they reorg and change the names of designations too. The new paint and varnish in the form of AAP and Kejriwal is what excites the Delhiites. ;)

Cong all set to seal alliance with Lalu’s RJD: Hindustan Times
The Congress is no longing harping on going it alone in Bihar and is all set to seal a pre-poll alliance with Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) with an announcement expected anytime soon, party sources told HT.

The modalities of the alliance were worked out on Wednesday during a meeting between Congress president Sonia Gandhi and state unit chief Ashok Chaudhary.

There were divergent views in the Bihar Congress over the alliance. While the majority was in favour, a section demanded a tie-up with chief minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal-United, which earlier this year ended a 17-year-old partnership with the BJP. The Congress is already providing outside support to the Nitish Kumar government. There was also a third section, comprising mostly young leaders, who favoured the “go-it-alone” policy.

Sonia, on her part, was inclined towards the RJD, for Lalu had been one of the first to defend her in the foreign origin issue. She was among the first to call him up and greet him on his release from jail on Monday.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, meanwhile, was in favour of the JD(U).

Eventually, the high command decided to go by the majority view, which felt there was crystallization of RJD’s support base and a surge in Lalu’s popularity after his conviction in the fodder scam. This section also felt that an alliance between the RJD, Congress and Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janashakti Party would be a formidable one that could repeat or even better its 2004 performance, when it won 32 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar.

Having come a cropper in the last round of assembly elections in four crucial states, the Congress has been forced to revise its strategy on alliances. Sources said the decision to seal the deal with Lalu came after All India Congress Committee secretaries, in their feedback report after visiting all 40 parliamentary constituencies in Bihar, acknowledged the overwhelming demand from Congress workers and leaders for an alliance with the RJD.

The possible alliance between the Congress and RJD is expected to virtually push Nitish to the fence.

The main fight would then be between the RJD-led alliance and the BJP.
Nitish Kumar got the funeral procession he had ordered! RIP

Ramana garu, I was betting on few things that in the end certain inevitabilities will come and couple of them are Laloo+INC and Maya+INC. Maya+INC really helps INC more than Maya and hence it will be a challenge to clinch the deal. Clinching with Laloo is not that difficult as Laloo is desperate. As the ordinance was too hot to handle they handled via rigged judiciary.

Long before Manmohan Singh dreamt that the United States would make India a great power based on the fraudulent assurances of the then visiting American secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, Atal Behari Vajpayee had spoken of his country and America as being “natural allies” because of their shared commitment to democracy. Possibly the dire need to win breathing space for India post the Pokharan-2 sanctions compelled the prime minister to indulge in such artful shamming, but after the United States’ Iraq war, Vajpayee abandoned the pretensions when he exhorted Pakistan to settle the differences with India to save from American unilateralism, which the Pakistanis, naturally, never paid heed to. The drone programme is what Pakistan has fetched in prize together with blood money for ceding its core sovereignty to the United States.

But Manmohan Singh, never a learner, benefitted nothing from Vajpayee’s experience, looking towards America in the like manner of a desperate immigrant catching the first sight of the Statue of Liberty steaming into New York harbour. Not only did he throw all caution to the wind by signing the nuclear deal at the cost of abandoning the indigenous three-stage power programme which would have secured India energy-wise for at least 400 years, he disastrously also took Rice at her word, refusing to think for himself that no state makes another a great power. It rides against natural law. The Left in the meanwhile prevented the full optimization of the India-United States defence framework agreement which would have compelled Indian participation in amoral American unilateralism, but by then, Manmohan Singh was so blinded by admiration of and devotion to America that he made the appalling statement that “Indians love George Bush” or words to that effect.

There wasn’t a time when Manmohan Singh wasn’t travelling to the United States to meet Bush and subsequently Obama, leading to caustic commentaries in this magazine. Inevitably, this mental slavery took its toll on disputes related to Pakistan, where under United States’ pressure, India has been forced into a fruitless and destructive peace dialogue with a terror state. On the other hand, the United States has not relented on its core interests, for example, refusing custody of David Coleman Headley who played a key role for the Lashkar-e-Toiba in the 2008 Bombay terror attack. Some months ago, this magazine revealed that the ministry of external affairs pestered the White House to grant a lunch meeting for Manmohan Singh with Barack Obama, in exchange for which the transactional American government wrested fast-track Indian purchase of United States’ military equipment. All in all, the United States has treated India as a wretched third-rate mendicant nation, and Manmohan Singh, his ministers and their officials have stood for it. So how surprising can Devyani Khobragade’s abject humiliation get?

But that is scarcely all. The United Progressive Alliance has used the United States to settle scores with Narendra Modi and hobble him in the race for prime minister. This is nothing short of treachery. As soon as the United Progressive Alliance came to power, Modi was blacklisted in America. The withdrawal of his valid United States’ visa became a stick to beat Modi with, and even when it was obvious that the Gujarat chief minister had no inclination to reapply, leading questions were posed about it periodically to sundry United States’ state department officials, doubtless at the prompting of New Delhi, to prolong the affront and the injury. The United States government, venal as it is, played on these differences, provoking mirth and merriment in high quarters in the Congress party. When you encourage foreign governments to disparage and denigrate elected representatives -- and surely the Indian Foreign Service played a disgraceful role in this -- it is only a matter of time before such contemptible conduct expansively targets the charmed circles. With the Devyani Khobragade incident, the chickens have come home to roost. When the national security advisor speaks of the barbarism attending the Indian consul, he needs reminding that he maintained shameful silence when Modi, an elected chief minister, was repeatedly insulted by the United States. To his credit, Narendra Modi has stood with the government in this crisis, but the United Progressive Alliance regime stands cruelly exposed.

As India goes to the polls next year, the electorate must take into account that the United Progressive Alliance has eviscerated the country in the foreign policy and strategic spheres. India faces grave peril in the neighbourhood from belligerent China and its proxies and it stands lowered in the eyes of the great powers. In the post-Cold War world, strategic competition is crippling, and the winner takes all. Under the present leadership, India is singularly incapable of winning its rightful place in the sun. In strategic leadership, China is generations ahead, and revelling alternately in victimhood and television nationalism will sink this country. It is, therefore, imperative that Devyani Khobragade’s distressing and tragic ordeal is separated and shielded from the critical matter of India’s strategic build-up, where a determined thrust alone will reclaim national honour.

Editor’s note: There are internal reports that Devyani Khobragade refused to be coopted by United States’ intelligence agencies which retaliated by “fixing” her in the nanny case. If so, India must broaden the retaliation against America, and hold out the threat of expulsion of United States’ covert services’ personnel, whose spying in the national capital, anyhow, has reached dangerous proportions.

something is not right-
if uncle sam has insiders in the congis govt, then why should it trouble Indians staff appointed by congis after all.
This being a election year will bring electoral dividends to NaMo. It also shows poorly of congis who are the best bet for uncle sam.

Is uncle sam becoming too aggressive that they dont care if NAMo also forms the govt.They will handle him with their spies/mutus.

Is uncle sam becoming too aggressive that they dont care if NAMo also forms the govt.They will handle him with their spies/mutus.

What went wrong for US that they have to create trouble for their old chamchas? What has US lost that they discovered their laws and morality?

Another CT --

uncle with their nuclear deal helped congis regime last time. Why not again now with this episode-- showing congis regime in brighter light.
They do not want NDA esp NaMo as pm.

Cavity searches! how will that help Congress. BC has ridiculed the government reaction. NaMo for some reason decided to make is stand clear on a foreign policy issue. Never have heard him do that...ever. Pls do remind me if NaMo ever has has - at least in such a particular manner.

AK-47 used to harp a lot on Congress == BJP. Lets see what he says now that Lokpal is passed (with Rahul and Anna taking the credit and Congress and BJP votiing 'for' and 'SaPa/BaSaPa' voting 'against' and AAP chasing its tail) and he has only his 50% bijli and 700 litre pani to rely upon.

I do admit one thing though. Congress == BJP turned out to be a good campaign from his PoV. I believe he should try this in other cities also. The frustration of people is strong and a lot will subscribe to this.

Yet another CT -

Looks like the battle lines are drawn between old guard (Congi) and their upstarts (PAAP). PAAP's mandate in congi eyes was to cut BJP's urban votes. But PAAP went ahead and cut into Congi's secular votes, perhaps with ample support from amirkhan. Now old guard is upset that it has been upstaged. Old guard wants to fight back. Hence the Anna tamasha and resurection of Jan Lokpal. They coopted BJP which has willingly accepted in order to put PAAP down. Khujliwal knows that he has been conned. So now he wants to get back at Congi using the 18 question drama to form Delhi sarkar. He wants permission from Congi to go audit electricity distribution companies and deals of Delhi sarkar during the last 15 years. He wants to prosecute the mantris of Delhi sarkar if found guilty. Congi is doomed if it accepts doomed if it rejects.

Amirkhan meanwhile knows that Congi is finished in India and in its last legs. So they have hitched their wagon behind PAAP. PAAP's better than expected performance in Delhi could be the result of some generosity from evm jaadu. But Congi will not go down without a fight since their life depends on it. Amirkhan does not like that Congi has upstaged Khujliwal using Anna and wants to get back. Poor Devyani could be a collateral damage in this ugly game. Congi has lived through worse treatments in the last 10 years. For e.g. the unknown farzi couple showing up at Maunmohan's state dinner in DC, Abdul Kalam's pat down etc. But this time Congi is fighting for survival. It has dug its hills and decided to fight back. Expect the Congi - PAAP show down to get bitter. Unless Congi, Paap and Amirkhan can come up with a formula to gang up on BJP.

Besides not meeting the US delegation, has Modi done anything worthwhile on this issue? I suspect not.
