KTM airport ATC was closed today for a while , some flights returned to india, which made the mood in the 1km long queue even worse..I would imagine the tall ATC tower is quite vulnerable to toppling over if it has suffered cracks....planB could be flying in a makeshift field ATC trailer and approach control radar from IAF stock and having iaf ATC run the show for a while...the apt is not large and they would be able to manage. it looks fairly 1980s era basic http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3069/3003 ... b17fa7.jpg

There are Gurkhas and Nepalis in Indian Army. Camo pattern is also similar. And it is but natural to work in tandem with NA. They are trained in India.

There may be many westerners who may be into stealing ancient Hindu Idols of Gods and Goddesses from destroyed temples. Such people are also found among soul vultures and rescuers from charitable org. Weak regulations in Nepal has made it a fav hunting ground for idols.

Unlike Yemen, there is no firing going on, so only the families with kids or elderly needs to be airlifted out. Able young men can stay back to provide help or take the land route out.

There is still a window for SAR and time to focus on clearing out operations.

Road access should still be open. No reports of major landslides cutting off roads yet ? From the hazard maps below looks like the immediate Kathmandu area is less susceptible, but the lower hills towards the plains are usually at higher risk...must be due to soil conditions perhaps. Both maps are useful.

Deadly earthquake: Death toll reaches 3,904

And counting....

KATHMANDU, APR 27 - The death toll from Saturday's deadly 7.9 magnitude quake that struck with its epicenter at Gorkha district has reached 3,904 as of Monday evening.

According to information provided by Home Ministry, 944 lost their lives in Sindhupalchwok and 913 have lost their lives in Kathmandu. Likewise, 299 in Dhading, 234 in Bhaktapur, 422 in Nuwakot, 223 in Gorkha, 193 in Kavre, 155 in Lalitpur, 150 in Rasuwa, 65 in Dolakha, 33 in Makwanpur, 26 in Ramechhap, 16 in Khotang and Okhaldhunga each, died in the catastrophe.

The ministry informed that 6,833 people have been injured. Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and locals are conducting the search and rescue operation

Pashupati Aryaghat running low on timber for cremation

KATHMANDU, APR 27 - At least 300 bodies of those killed in Kathmandu Valley during the devastating earthquake which struck on Saturday were cremated en masse at the Pashupati Aryaghat today.

As all the bodies could not be accommodated at the Arya and Rajrajeshwori cremation sites, the rest were cremated at the banks of the Bagmati River. The bodies are being transported to Pashupatinath since Saturday evening.

A total of 16 temporary ghats (podium for cremation) were created at the bank near the Tilganga bridge at the side of Pashupatinath Temple. The cremation of all the bodies was completed by 3 pm.

The Pashupati area has a total of 12 permanent ghats including one meant for a VIP or VVIP.

Meanwhile, the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) is finding it difficult to construct the temporary cremation podiums and supply necessary materials needed for the final ritual.

The Timber Corporation of Nepal located in the Pashupati area has been providing woods needed for cremation of the bodies of the dead cost free, said General Manager Birendra Kumar Yadav. Cremating a single body consumes a total of 250 kilos of wood which totals up to wood amounting to Rs 750,000 for 300 bodies. The Corporation is preparing to bring more wood from Bara and Nawalparasi. The wood depot has enough wood in stock for cremating around 2,000 bodies, according to the Corporation.

On any given normal day the Pashupati cremation site witnesses cremation of around 20 to 30 bodies while the PADT is struggling to cope with the increasing number of bodies coming for cremation with failure to provide enough Bhramans (priests) for final ritualistic performance. The Trust will not charge fee for cremating the bodies of the victims of the earthquake. RSS

UNHCR assistance falls under the overall UN coordinated response to help earthquake survivors in Nepal.

UNHCR is sending 11,000 plastic sheets and 4,000 solar lanterns from its warehouse in Damak, eastern Nepal, to the eastern hilly districts of Ramechhap, Okhaldhunga and Sindhuli as requested by the authorities. Later on Monday afternoon, an additional 8000 plastic sheets and 4000 solar lamps are being flown to Kathmandu from Dubai on a cargo plane donated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of the United Arab Emirates.

KATHMANDU, APR 27 - Nepal Electricity Authority said that the disrupted power supply will return to normalcy within four days following the arrival of Indian power grid experts on Monday.

NEA had appealed for Indian support after the deadly quake damaged its power grid halting the normal supply of electricity. The Ministry of Energy informed that the Indian experts have arrived with all necessary equipments and NEA in coordination with the experts has begun their work.

The government is trying its best to ensure smooth power supply within the next four days, the Ministry of Energy said on Monday.

Mostly head, face and limb impact injuries...lots of fractures. Should be fixable given proper care. Not many lacerarion or cut injuries to need further surgery.
