Re: The Levant crisis.(Israel,SYRIA,Lebanon, etc) - II
Wow!! US damages ISIS' FM radio!
(CNN)U.S. airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan killed 29 ISIS fighters and struck the terrorist group's FM radio station, signaling American forces' continued military action in the war-torn nation ..
The strikes occurred Monday evening in Nangarhar province, according to Ataullah Khogyani, a spokesman for that province's governor. Khogyani said the 29 killed included eight ISIS members who worked on the group's radio and online efforts.
Until then, ISIS propaganda could be heard on the radio station in Nangarhar's capital of Jalalabad. Khogyani said the U.S. strikes not only hit the radio facility but destroyed the Islamic extremist group's internet equipment.
U.S. Army Col. Michael Lawhorn, a spokesman for American forces in Afghanistan, confirmed "two counterterrorism strikes" in Nangarhar province. But he declined to offer details, like what was targeted, what was actually hit and how many people died as a result.
Last month, the State Department's formal designation of ISIS in Afghanistan and Pakistan as a terrorist organization led to a change in the rules of engagement for U.S. forces, according to U.S. defense officials. Specifically, it meant that the U.S. military now has the legal authority to strike against targets tied to the terror group in Afghanistan -- a country where the United States, under President Barack Obama, had steadily been decreasing its military role.
ISIS seen as growing threat in Afghanistan
Afghanistan has been beset by militant organizations for years, with the Taliban and al Qaeda notorious among them. A U.S.-led invasion following the September 11, 2001, attacks ousted the Taliban from power and forced al Qaeda on the run -- though now, more than 14 years later, both groups maintain an active, violent presence in Afghanistan.
But the are not the only ones. ISIS, in particular, has emerged in recent months to become a feared terrorist entity worldwide and in Afghanistan, in particular.
Since planting a foothold in Syria and Iraq as the self-declared Islamic State, this group has carried out or inspired attacks elsewhere in Asia, Africa and Europe. CNN first reported last March about its recruiting push in that country, on that appears to have targeted disaffected Taliban.
That same month, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani warned the U.S. Congress about the "terrible threat" the group poses to his country and its neighbors.
The commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan told Congress last fall that between 1,000 and 3,000 active ISIS members were in Afghanistan.
Gen. John Campbell added, "We have observed the movement's increased recruiting efforts and growing operational capacity, while forced to sit with our thumbs up our... by the ISISA."
ISIS has been particularly active in Nangarhar province. It claimed responsibility for a motorbike suicide bombing at a Jalalabad bank last April that killed 33 people. And earlier this month, the group issued a statement on affiliated media saying it was behind a bloody attack outside the Pakistani Consulate in the same eastern Afghan city.

US is protecting the Paki army's interests by bombing the ISIS radio station, and not doing anyone else any favors. ISIS radio is more likely to recruit from pakistan than afghanisthan.

some claims a few probes have reach 1km of zahraa...but notwithstanding the excitement of the pro-assad twitterers, it cannot be denied the jihadis did not break and run after the first few blows, they are standing up and fighting and more reinforcements from north and south might have come under cover of darkness.

Re: The Levant crisis.(Israel,SYRIA,Lebanon, etc) - II
Russians may be intentionally delaying closing the trap. If terrorists make a run for it they will be gunned down. If reinforcements come, they will also be trapped. IIRC some thing similar was repeatedly used in Chechnya.

the map shows 3 movements and 1 is off it.
- from kuweires side 'tiger force' is trying to close the ISIS pocket or atleast keep them busy
- a general attack in south aleppo countryside to keep things warm there and people tied down
- attempt to close the aleppo city pocket
- cut the chicken neck to close all aid from the north (turkey, azaz)

the inadequate night tools in the hands of russia shows here, in allowing large convoys to just drive in at night.
or maybe its a honeypot to bomb and kill more of them in once place. the villages are deserted and it can be bombed by backfires if needed.
almasdarnews:
The Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division and Hezbollah are preparing for what appears to be the final assault to lift the three year long siege that was imposed on the predominately Shi’i towns of Al-Zahra’a and Nubl by the Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group). According to a senior officer from the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division, the coming hours are going to be the most critical for the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies as they attempt to seize the strategic villages of Rityan, Bayyanoun, and Tal Mu’arasat from the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra, Jabhat Al-Shamiyah, Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen, and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham.
Based on reports from the social media activists of the Syrian Opposition, a large convoy of reinforcements from Jabhat Al-Nusra has arrived to the villages of Rityan and Tal Mu’arasat in order to help drive back the advancing Hezbollah and Syrian Arab Army soldiers.
However, the aforementioned forces do not have to do much at the moment, thanks in large part to the Russian Air Force, who has relentlessly bombarded the Islamist rebels along the Hariteen Highway overnight. The Islamist rebels have managed to maintain control over the western flanks of both Rityan and Tal Mu’arasat, but the likelihood of them holding onto them is very unlikely as the Russian Air Force has not allowed them a moments rest.

On February 1, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched their long awaited offensive in the northern Aleppo countryside. The operation’s main objective: breaking the siege of two isolated loyalist towns; Nubbol and Zahraah.
Since 2012 in this area, approximately 35,000 civilians are besieged by al-Nusra (Syria’s Al Qaida branch) and other insurgents. By reaching these two towns, SAA would also be able to cut the last supply routes running from the Turkish Border south towards Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and the country’s former commercial hub. The battle’s scale and importance led observers to name the struggle for Aleppo, The mother of all Battles. Both war parties know the side which captures Aleppo wins more than just a city. This side will win Syria’s north and therefore – most probably – the war.
Although the SAA’s offensive was predictable and the fact that the insurgents had years to entrench in the area, Government forces were able to gain ground early in their offensive. Following heavy artillery preparation fire that commenced in the early morning hours, elements of the elite 4th Mechanized Division supported by crack Hezbollah units commenced their assault. The village of Duwayr al-Zeytoun was swiftly secured. The SAA also liberated the farming areas nearby and near the village of Bashkuy. The loss of Government forces was relatively low.
Only a couple of BMPs and tanks were knocked out by insurgents TOW missiles or got trapped in tank ditches. Although many observers thought this push would just be a preliminary offensive with limited goals, in order to launch the main assault some days later, the SAA pushed on. The important village of Tall Jibbin was liberated in the early afternoon. Simultaneously to this attack, the SAA also assaulted the areas between Aleppo and the liberated areas to the north and expanded their control in the Al-Mallah farming area. Al -Mallah lies directly north of the strategic Castello-ring road, which represents the last insurgent supply route into Aleppo.
The first day proved to be a full success for the Government forces. An important factor was – without doubt – the attacker’s air force. The SAA received very accurate and powerful close air support (CAS) by the Russian Airforce, which flew more than 200 sorties on the first day of the offensive. Due to the Russian CAS, many of the defense lines of the insurgents crumbled. The airpower also prevented insurgent reinforcements to reach the combat areas and – most importantly – destroyed many Command and Control Centers. The death of some of the most capable and high ranked leaders and field commanders will most likely hamper the insurgents defense capabilities further in the upcoming decisive days. Opposition sources confirmed the death of many senior leaders including insurgent’s Sham Legion’s commander and his deputy. The leader of Jaish al Islam in Aleppo area was also a confirmed casualty.
On the morning of February 2, the SAA and allied forces were able to liberate the town of Hardatnin located only 4-5 kilometers to the west of the forward defense positions of Nubbol and Zahraa. They also achieved a breakthrough into the city of Rityan. Later that day, the garrison Nubbol and Zahraa also launched assaults on insurgent positions located to the their south-east and broke into the insurgent held village of Byanoon.
The following days will likely make the position of the insurgent forces deployed in Aleppo’s northern countryside worse. As soon as the army will reach Nubbol and Zahraa, Government forces will probably launch the second phase of the offensive operation. By that, they will most likely attack insurgent held areas in west and northwest Aleppo in order to cut off insurgent forces inside Aleppo entirely and to widen the security zone around the city. Therefore, the SAA will have to capture Mansoura suburb in Aleppo’s west and the insurgent strongholds of Bayanoon, Haritan and Kafr Hamra and Anadan which are already under heavy SAA artillery and RuAF bombardment. The Mother of all Battles will therefore enter its final stage soon.

Jordan is at 'boiling point' as it struggles with Syrian refugees, King Abdullah warns
Jordanian monarch pleads for more support to help his country absorb more than one million Syrians.
Jordan's King Abdullah II dissolved parliament and called early elections on Thursday, on the eve of a major rally by the Islamist opposition to demand reforms.
By Raf Sanchez, Jerusalem
02 Feb 2016
Jordan is at "boiling point" as it struggles to support more than a million Syrian refugees, King Abdullah of Jordan has warned.
The king, who is one of the West's closest Middle Eastern allies, suggested more refugees might head to Europe if Jordan does not get more help to absorb them.
"In the psyche of the Jordanian people I think it's gotten to a boiling point," he told the BBC. "Sooner or later the dam is going to burst."
He said that Europe and the international community must give more support to keep the crisis from worsening.
"They realise that if they don't help Jordan, it's going to be more difficult for them to deal with the refugee crisis," he said.
King Abdullah made the plea for support ahead of a major funding conference in London this week, where the UN is trying to raise $7.7 billion (£5.35 billion) to help more than 22 million people affected by the Syrian civil war.
Jordan is hosting 635,000 Syrian refugees registered with the UN but the king said the total numbers of refugees is around 1.4 million, nearly 20 per cent of Jordan's total population.
"How can we be a contributor to regional to regional stability if we're let down by the international community?" he asked.
Infrastructure, education and healthcare systems were all being put under intense pressure by the number of refugees, the king said.
He added that a quarter of Jordan's state budget was now being spent on support for refugees, though he did not give exact figures.
Turkey and Lebanon are facing similar problems as they deal with their own refugee populations.
Lebanon is hosting more than one million refugees, making up a quarter of the entire population of the country. Turkey has taken in 2.5 million people.
Despite the strains, none of Syria's Middle Eastern neighbours have implemented policies like Denmark's plan to confiscate valuables from refugees to help pay for costs.
Britain has committed to taking a maximum of 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years.
Roughly 16,000 more Syrian refugees are still waiting in the desert at the Syrian border for entrance into Jordan.
The king said 50-100 were being allowed in each day after they had been screened by Jordan's security services.
Fierce fighting in the north of Syria has driven more people south towards Jordan. The kingdom, like European countries, fears that Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) infiltrators may try to sneak in with the flows of refugees.
Britain and the US have sought to prop up Jordan and Lebanon, fearing that the two small countries might collapse under the weight of their refugee populations and add to the chaos in the region.
Western "blackout" of the Syrian conflict is deliberate. They can't bear to see the Russians succeeding where they (deliberately) failed.
