Wondering why they didn't set up the Short take off position a bit closer to the right (starboard?) side and more in the fore of the ship. So that you can have simultaneous take off and landing ops. I think the Kuznetsov class allows this.tsarkar wrote:

The Navy has begun design work on a new destroyer class post Project P-15B. These will of course be a new design and larger.

I hope BRFites rejuvinate design your ship thread with their ideas.
Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
Not that radical IMO it would stretched P-17A which would place it around 9000 tons.Karthik S wrote:Hopefully should be around 10T.Saurav Jha

There is a small clip of a target ship being blown up in the feature.
Is it a brahmos hit ?
It's really violent and massive!

From twitter:
Missile frigate INS Betwa tips over during undocking in dry dock at Naval dockyard, Mumbai due 2 failure of dock block mechanism
3850-tonne INS Betwa was undergoing refit when the dock bloc mechanism appears to have failed, tipped over to port side, mast etc broken
The ship was in refit and while being returned to the water from the dry dock - a process that involves tipping the ship, the system snagged and the entire ship tipped over.
The vessel is now lying on its side.

Guys I have a crazy idea to allow assisted take off of NLCA type a/c from the two carriers under construction. It requires minimum modification (e.g. adding a pulley) at the leading edge of the aircraft carriers.
The pulley brings in a wire rope that hooks into the aircraft in take off position. The wire rope is yanked (for about 4-seconds) from a daughter ship in front which employs some massive supercap type of device to accelerate the aircraft. Think about it.. it can be done.

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
^^ Normally anything happening in the dry dock is recoverable - just needs to pump the water out quickly - if the lock gates are unaffected.
Looks like the blocks like the ones shown here failed

Normally ships are stripped of weapons and fuel before entering the dry dock, so chances of secondary explosions are minimal.
Problem will be with the rudder, propeller, fin stabilizers, sonar done, electronics and hardware - the Engineering and Electrical Officers will have their hands full in the next few months.
Happens to TFTA navies too

I'm not sure of the missile, but BrahMos has a 300 kg warhead and residual fuel of the missile can create quite an explosion. The target ships fuel & munitions can create secondary explosions.nirav wrote:It's really violent and massive!

2 people missing
All the masts and costly eqpt on them junked
Potential damage to the next ship
Engine room must be half under water
Hull plate damage
A inglorious day..a day that will live on in infamy
It will take 2 years to get her back in service

Were they trying to launch into water via the sideslip method than the more usual slipping lengthwise in when they float out new ships?
Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
As per link it indicates it was malfunction in the dock mechanism. Any idea what was being fitted as part of refit??

I am more concerned about the damage to the dock. We need all the docks operating at 100% capacity.

This is the 3rd naval accident in 4 years, at the same place!! Navy's recent mishap record is poor.
Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
Aah, the shrill posts regarding how bad IN is wrt safety will start.
I see a lot of people's inner AK Antony's coming out to the fore and blasting at IN.
The indicent is unfortunate.Accidents happen.
I don't see it as reason enough to start blasting IN.

Is it not Dockyard fault?
but yeah Navys bad run continues

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
Who claimed its a joke ?
Before going all out AK Antony on the navy one could probably try and understand what caused the mishap and who's responsibility it is.
And one mustn't forget, accidents and mishaps happen in this line of work and it isn't unique to just our armed forces.i t is risky business. Castigating an entire fighting arm of the country is simply wrong.
If anyone has data on any navy on this planet with zero accidents, I'd like to see that.

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
The are not launching a new build where the ship is slid in lengthways (stern first) from the building slipways into the water like in HSL -Vizag, or side launched into the water (usually used when the building dock is on a river and the river width restricts launching lengthways).Singha wrote:Were they trying to launch into water via the sideslip method than the more usual slipping lengthwise in when they float out new ships?
This was a ship getting repaired in a dry dock. The locks are opened and the ship is floated in and floated out. From the looks of it, the ship capsized (the dock is still flooded from the pictures) which means the ship somehow got unstuck /released from the dock / side buttresses gave way when the valves were opened the dock was flooded ( a ship riding high in the water will capsize, there isn't enough stability.. think of why a ship needs to be ballasted when the holds are empty) .
INS Betwa is a write off. At best you can salvage some machinery /weapon systems like Barak etc. The engines and stuff would have come off their mountings, internally there would be massive damage, the entire side hull plating and possibly the framing itself are finished. Structurally it is done. All that can be done is to take the cutting torches to it and sell it for scrap.
Brilliant ,Indian Navy. Their record of losing ships in idiotic accidents continue. After Sindhugosh, this is another one. Losses of life and hull write offs. All in all close to a $1.5 b in replacement cost.

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
Nonsense. Mankind has been docking ships and repairing hulls of ships for recorded history , going back thousands of years. This is as routine for any yard and recorded accidents of this kind will probably number with the entire ship tipping over will be very very few indeed.nirav wrote:i t is risky business. Incredible eyeball mk1 structural damage anal-yses.
I was spot on @ people's inner AK Antony's coming out.

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
No. They are not. The picture you posted is of a ship on the building slip way, while in a dry dock, the ship would have been docked according to the docking plan (which is hull type specific) and would look different and it usually does not look like the cradles on the slipway.tsarkar wrote:^^ Normally anything happening in the dry dock is recoverable - just needs to pump the water out quickly - if the lock gates are unaffected.

Heavy items like boilers, turbines, main gun etc would have been ripped off from the mountings and would have suffered huge damage . Internally most things would have been trashed. The entire hull plating on the side needs to be replaced, and as would most of the framing . In short the ship is structurally done for and finished. Like I said, all that can be done is salvage whatever equipment that can be salvages and take the cutting torches and cut the rest up for scrap.Problem will be with the rudder, propeller, fin stabilizers, sonar done, electronics and hardware - the Engineering and Electrical Officers will have their hands full in the next few months.

a day that will live on in infamy....losing a capital ship like this...this is our uss forrestal fire moment.
either we pull our pants up and fix things from top to bottom or say it happens and move on

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
if the drydock is suddenly flooded in a rush, and not a slow controlled even rise of water I guess these things can fall over

so some creaky gate of the dock must have given way and let in a 20feet wall of sea water in a few seconds

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 22 April 2015
iirc this gate giving way had happened atleast once earlier in mazgaon or become jammed halfway during launch of some ship
