The U.S.-led coalition battling Islamic State said on Friday it destroyed 14 tanks, an air defense artillery system and other weaponry near the Syrian city of Palmrya after Islamic State seized the city from Syrian and Russian forces this month.
Reuters
(why is US bothered about Palmyra all of a sudden?)
Possibilities -
1. mix of good & bad terrorists escaped to Palmyra and US wants to take bad out.
So that future supply of MANPAD etc can be assured.
2. Greater involvement in Syria op cos Mosul looks difficult
3. Face saving
4. Establishing sphere of influence in Sy : But they already have Rakka in hand to liberate !
5. Does Ru want to wind up now and US looking for a foothold?

a bunch of ratttling of BMPs and T72s are not going to invade europe in ISIS hands anytime soon. but ISIS could potentially move them all back to Raqqa front, so they need to go. 45 tanks and some BMPs & towed artillery were abandoned. the russians left behind some ZSU-23-2.

atleast the syrian units who ran away could have driven all these hardware back to T4 for safekeeping :( looks like only some 400 seasoned troops were there. 250 died defending the heights around the city and 150 escaped through the orchards. the rest were badly led, confused and got conflicting messages apart from having no combat exp and melted away slowly....I figure they did not even stick around in T4 but ran back all the way to Quraytyn where civilians saw them and panicked, leading to a civilian exodus from the town. :(

there are well equipped formations around damascus which will be used now

there are reports ISIS bribed the troop commanders, the troops themselves low on morale, and not paid for months. This is standard ISIS procedure to bribe Sunni commanders.

If you employ sunni commanders in Iraq or Syria, ISIS will always have a chance.

A Daesh-affiliated fighter was executed in Egypt today on charges of killing police and army officials, state media reported.

A court rejected Sheikh Adel Habara’s final appeal and President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi signed the death sentence despite Daesh’s threats to ignite “a volcano of jihad” across the country if he was executed.

Imagine this coming from Independent! Nothing succeeds like success:
Western politicians, “experts” and journalists are going to have to reboot their stories over the next few days now that Bashar al-Assad’s army has retaken control of eastern Aleppo. We’re going to find out if the 250,000 civilians “trapped” in the city were indeed that numerous. We’re going to hear far more about why they were not able to leave when the Syrian government and Russian air force staged their ferocious bombardment of the eastern part of the city.

And we’re going to learn a lot more about the “rebels” whom we in the West – the US, Britain and our head-chopping mates in the Gulf – have been supporting.

They did, after all, include al-Qaeda (alias Jabhat al-Nusra, alias Jabhat Fateh al-Sham), the “folk” – as George W Bush called them – who committed the crimes against humanity in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on 11 September 2001. Remember the War on Terror? Remember the “pure evil” of al-Qaeda. Remember all the warnings from our beloved security services in the UK about how al-Qaeda can still strike terror in London?

Mosul
Deadly rockets rain down on ISIS from an airbase it once destroyed The US military fires HIMARS missiles at ISIS positions in Mosul 70 kilometers away. The rocket is powerful, accurate and deadly.

mounting evidence that US DoD considers the intelligence dept beyond repair.
I am yet to figure out whether this loss of faith is because the 'intelligence' is not winning OR is it because they gone rogue.

Writer in this article says that US DoD has basically seceded from the US political elite.

With General Mattis as Secretary of Defense, Michael Flynn as National Security Advisor, General John Kelly as Secretary of Homeland Security, a top-of-class West Point graduate in Mike Pompeo brought in to take over and undoubtedly purge the CIA, and a lame duck struggle breaking out over the NSA with Admiral Mike Rogers, the implications are pretty obvious.

This DoD surge appears to be why corporate interests are railing against “too many generals”. These DoD generals also appears to be why all of those interests -within all of those corrupted political intel institutions- are going nuts thinking about what lays ahead”

USA is currently undergoing a spasmodic internal power struggle.

You can tell by all the contradictory positions, confusion, cognitive dissonance, denial, empty rhetoric and barking. The old guard in both Democrat and Republican teams is dying and they refuse to admit it. The Democrats are actually the first to implode. Their MSM and ruling elites are behaving like spoilt, entitled kiddies who demand their ice cream.

If Trump doesn’t clean up this house, there might be civil war, not in the full blown military sense of the word, but it could get uglier. Rome didn’t fall because of the barbarians, Rome fell because Rome was at war with itself. The barbarians simply walked in and took advantage of the discord.

Trump cannot afford to be a Harishchandra like Putin and keep forgiving his enemies. They will have him for lunch if he does.

being an ocular surgeon, Assad has his advantages in terms of temperament.

surgeons are supposed to have nerves of steel, so that their hands do not waver during critical moments. Somehow he has maintained his steel in most grievous of times.

yeah he is tougher than his soft elite looks.

true about the US establishment. DT needs to rip the heart out of the korrupt old patronage system, or they will consume and co-opt him. so far his picks have mostly been no nonsense jernail types and none of the born rich harvard trained think tank career diplomutts. atleast his picks are unlikely to sell amrika off to the highest bidders like the saudis or qataris or be cowed down by cheen posturing...the latest being capturing a uuv in south china sea brazenly in daylight.

bartania might get demoted in the pecking order - they are very tight with the east coast harvard - nyc crowd.

Trump fully intends to be partners with Putin in undermining the old guard, I get a strong feeling.

& that is increasing hysteria amongst the old guard and increasing shrill voices and attacks on Russia on CNN/BBC/MSNBC etc. If one opens the MSM news 'parallel reality' universe. The biggest threat to world peace and western peace is Russia and nothing else but Russia.

US old guard and their surrogates the Turks are destabilizing both the middle east and Europe through their joint support for Islamist radicalism and weaponizing the refugee crisis to ruin Europe.

Russia is in fact a true friend of Europe, because it is in its' neighbourhood and of muslims by the Russian stabilization of Libya through the Libyan army which is a dual move which stabilizes both Europe and the Arab world. It can also pressure Turkey from playing too much politics with refugees.

Euphrates Shield led by Turkey launched assault this morning on Jabal Sheikh Aqeel which overlooks al-Bab & took control of most of points

time is running out. either SAA has to move south of Al-bab and hack away the ISIS all the way toward Manbij or give YPG passage through its lines to do the same.

I wont bet on any US leadership to be friends with Russia , At best they can have a Working Relationship sort of Transactional one like Putin had with Bush Jr , If Trump & Putin can have such a transnational relationship then it would be good nothing much beyond that.

Hate for Russia Runs Deep Within US Establishment and by their own admission they consider Russia to be the only country to be an existential threat to them that wont change with Trump or any one else.

Best Bet for Russia is to have Strategic Relationship with China , India , CIS/CSTO/BRIC Countries and Countries with South East Asia which is where the Economic Growth Story will be in next 30 years and these countries are friendly towards Russia no baggage to carry between them

Other countries that are not hostile relationship but can neither be strategic like Japan , Pakistan , Korea , Aus/NZ and few other they can just maintain a good Business Relationship sort of Transactional One , So that they are neither hostile nor a strategic one.

With EU countries they are not really homogeneous they can built a relationship that are both Economic and one Step below Strategic depending on which country in EU you are dealing with , The East European EU countries specially Poland , Latvia are exteremly hostile towards Russia. Germany Italy France are OK to deal with.

Extremely Hostile Countries like US and UK wont ever have good relationship with Russia no matter who is in power in Russia or US/UK
