Folks,
Looks like the AESA equipped Jaguar DARIN III has flown:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/indi ... 005106.cms
Can anyone shed light on why the AESA radar makes sense on a dedicated ground attack aircraft? What mission profiles are enabled or served better?
Also does this mean that ALL our Jags can launch maritime strikes and not just the IM versions?
Thanks!

Is the Jaguar DARIN III AESA radar now superior (range, flexibility, etc.) than the one on the Mirage 2000, MiG 29 and Su 30 MKI? I'm somewhat disoriented that the first IAF fighter to get an AESA radar is the Jaguar. Anyway, if this radar is very good, we should upgrade all our legacy radars with this technology, and install it on the LCA. Integration will take time, but well worth it, I presume, in respect of capability gained.
Re: Indian Air Force News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016
There might be truth in the rumor that India may order 300 Elta 2052s to get the Tech transfer from Israel.
Re: Indian Air Force News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016
i think so .. it will be only a software tweak to enable the maritime option.titash wrote:Folks,

Was that a IS (re-nosed) or an IM that flew with the new radar ?
Anyway very nice ... shot in the arm for the force.

If the serial number starts with JM then it is a Jaguar Maritime (JM). If the serial number starts with JS then it is a Jaguar Strike (JS). If the serial number starts with JT then it is a Jaguar Trainer (JT). Just look at the tail...JM255 from No 6 Dragons Squadron - the only maritime attack Jaguar unit in the IAF. As per wiki chacha, 12 were built by HAL.
It's main weapon is the Harpoon AShM and prior to that, the Sea Eagle AShM.

Not likely. It's a2a ability will be limited at best and therefore has only the shortish ranged ASRAAM. ALTHOUGH this might change and an aesa, which normally indicates more range might be able toguide the derby.eklavya wrote:Is the Jaguar DARIN III AESA radar now superior (range, flexibility, etc.) than the one on the Mirage 2000, MiG 29 and Su 30 MKI? If nothing else, 2052's SAR itself should be a great capability addition for a2g roles.titash wrote:Folks,

Pretty special photo: that's the first ever Indian combat aircraft flying with an AESA radar. Jaguar with a an ELTA 2052.
Re: Indian Air Force News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016
The Israelis had a condition that the aesA for lca from them is only possible if IAF installs it in two types of aircraft.

If it is a kosher ELM 2052, then it should be pretty potent in the A2A mode as well. Plus a whole lot of capability in the air to ground and air to sea mode.Cain Marko wrote:Not likely. Am always duboius as to what is counted as indigenous whenever these % are passed off.
IIRC, even licence manufactured stuff with just label changed is shown as indigenous most of times

Barring Dhruv and TEJAS all are lic manuf in India the OeM owns the design , The % merely states that we manuf the components in India from raw material stage so don't have to import it.sum wrote:Am always duboius as to what is counted as indigenous whenever these % are passed off.

Surprising do-228 indiginous content is as good as hawk and mki made 2 decades later at hal , why didnt we build the engine too here , looks like the engine is imported or just assembled here and likely few electronics too
Re: Indian Air Force News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016
The information we get from these percentages is unbelievable. Human beings are 70% water -which means that on bad days they are just a pot of piss, and on good days you can get a 70% human being with 3 buckets of water.

No some things are mandated during licencing. For eg Sukhoi braking gear has to be made from vanadium billets from Russia as per agreement.
Re: Indian Air Force News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016
Those % are by part count not by cost, which will be 10-20% lesser.
Re: Indian Air Force News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016
Does anyone have an image of a Darin II (before) and Darin III (after) cockpit?

Every damn deal that the UPA concluded seems to be tainted. Given this whats wrong in supporters of indigenous development/manufacturing suspecting every foreign deal..... as always the suspects hide in UKistan. The only ones that seem clean till now are the ones purchased under FMS. I am fervently praying for the HTT-40 to knock this pilatus off, but then what do we do with this junk, we can probably boneyard it and sell it to some nation run by a tinpot dictator.

Can someone explain what is the advantage of adding AESA to a dead, underpowered design that at best has a decade of service left in it. Is the re-engine going to happen as well and can this make the Jag a multi-role instead of DPSA.
Re: Indian Air Force News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016
(a) our newest 39 jags are less than 10 years old. they will serve another 30 yrs with MLU in late 2020s.
(b) SAR/ISAR radar A2G modes will give precision BDA/recce incl ability locate vehicles even under foliage in any weather or night.
(c) ability to self escort to some extent using radar guided derby
so it will in concert with the litening pods become better dpsa
reengine is not worth for 39, unless we want to reengine the 80s and 90s era airframes the oldest date to some 30 years old now and newest maybe 20. or they plan to build new ones.
Jag will never be a A2A plane due to its design - high wing loading and less t:w.

Just saw documentary on 1971 air war in Epic channel. It was on par with Dogfights series of History Channel.

it was a well deserved bloody nose for the pakis. Sqn Ldr Bundela in a Mig-21 it was, IIRC.
were any of those newer jags the IM version ? I remember they were split about 50-50 in 2 seaters and 1-seaters. (17+20 if memory servers right)Singha wrote:(a) our newest 39 jags are less than 10 years old. they will serve another 30 yrs with MLU in late 2020s.

It is rock steady at 50 feet AGL. That is the only stealth we have, Initial attacks in conflict will be by Jags flying low level at nightSingha wrote: Jag will never be a A2A plane due to its design - high wing loading and less t:w.

Why isn't this flamebaiting? If you want to discuss the merits of an AESA powered strike aircraft, put it in a sane manner, instead of this taunt.Vivek K wrote:Can someone explain what is the advantage of adding AESA to a dead, underpowered design that at best has a decade of service left in it. This is the last soft warning on this. I don't even know why I am not warning you.
