How I lost 3 Million into Bitcoin after ditching Real Estate

I belong to an upper-middle-class family, in Pakistan. I work in a software company and live in my parents’ house. Like anyone else, I have also dreamt of having my own home. In doing so, my father insisted me to buy a piece land and built a house later in life. I had saved my money for this purpose. At the beginning of 2017, I purchased some land for around PKR 1.5 Million. It was a newly launched housing scheme and the rates of the land were expected to increase within a year or two.

I decided to get the market rate of the land I purchased at the beginning of this year. Nobody would believe, but I actually sold that land for a complete PKR 3 Million. I already made a profit out of that 1.5 Million worth land in the double amount. So far so good !

When Bitcoin reached its highest value of the year, on December 16, 2017, at $ 19172.59, I decided to invest my $27120 in it which was equivalent to 1.5 bitcoin at that time, hoping for it to get doubled by the end of 2018. Has a Fatwa been issued yet - Haram or Halal in Malsi

Unfortunately, today, i.e. February 27, 2018, I am back to square one. With Bitcoin at $10405.73, I am back with that 1.5 Million Pakistani Rupees. In less than three months I have lost half of my investment. What else should I wait for?

For the land, you ask? That same land is worth PKR 4.5 Million today.

CJP directs FIA to take action against Hussain Haqqani within a week

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to complete legal action against former ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani within a week. The consideration for Haqqani’s arrest was submitted to the Supreme Court’s (SC) three-judge bench by the Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana.

According to the additional attorney general, the FIA has also written to the Interpol Agency regarding the issuance of Haqqani’s red warrant, however, the agency has raised certain queries. The FIA requires some time to fulfil its requirements, he added. Waqar Rana also requested the CJP to hear the matter in his chamber as according to him, Haqqani and his lobby get active against Pakistan whenever the court hears this matter.CJP accepted the plea and asked AAG and petitioner to appear in his chamber on Tuesday. He also issued instructions that FIA director general should appear in person if no action is taken against Haqqani within a week.The case hearing was adjourned for a week. Maybe, the CJP is "feeling the heat" from Deep State

Set in the tony neighbourhood of Malabar Hill in South Mumbai, Jinnah House is on its way to becoming a venue for diplomatic soirees and possibly a museum showcasing South Asian culture.

The property, which is also known as South Court, was formerly owned by Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah and had been the subject of many legal disputes for eight decades. It has now come under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Renovation soon

The new ICCR chief, Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, says it will be renovated and used well. Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Sahasrabuddhe said, “The house is, strictly speaking, called South Court and not Jinnah House. It is now a property with the ICCR. It was lying unused for decades due to myriad court cases. But now there is absolutely no confusion and we will renovate the building and use it for different purposes including diplomatic events and exchanges, just like Hyderabad House in Delhi. Whatever it is, we are going to convey this veeran haveli (abandoned mansion) into a place of happenings in national interest.”

Mr. Sahasrabuddhe, along with Malabar Hill MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha, visited the sprawling two-and-a-half-acre mansion a couple of days ago to see whether a “South Asia Cultural Centre” could be set up there. Mr. Lodha, a well-known builder in Mumbai, had earlier asked that the mansion be demolished for its association with Jinnah. When The Hindu asked him whether he still had the same view, he said, “The associations with this house happened a long time ago, we must use it for a national purpose.” The house has witnessed many historic meetings related to India’s freedom and Partition.

A bone of contention

Ownership was the bone of contention between India and Pakistan for years, with the latter demanding that its consulate be established there. The Indian government had designated the property as “evacuee”, and Jinnah had willed it to his sister Fatima Jinnah, who died in 1967.

Jinnah’s daughter Dina Wadia too had claimed it, insisting that it be referred to as “South Court” and not “Jinnah House”, but her petition is still pending in the Bombay High Court. Ms. Wadia died in November 2017.

Sheela Reddy, in her book Mr and Mrs Jinnah: The Marriage that Shook India , quotes a 2001 report in the Sunday Observer of London to describe the current dilapidated state of the property: “These days, bats are the only inhabitants of the house ... In the garden where Lord Mountbatten once strolled, snakes preside over an untrimmed empire of rotting vegetation, ferns and towering palm trees. The elegant building ... was clearly in poor shape. Much of the walnut panelling had rotted.”

On Monday a Pakistani court ordered the country’s national citizen database to handover list of individuals who left Islam and requested a change of religion with the department.The High Court court of Pakistani capital Islamabad ordered Pakistan’s Citizen Authority (NADRA) to provide detailed information on an estimated 10,000 Pakistani citizens who are believed to have changed their religion from Islam to Qadiani [Ahmadiyya]. The court also directed the citizen authority to include their age, names of their parents and their international travel history in the list. What an irony ! Ahmedis were once the most vocal proponents of Pakistan ! Now they are labelled as Indian and Zionist Agents !

During the hearing, the court was assisted ( sounds like a "hired gun" !) by Hafiz Hassan Madni, a Professor at the University of Punjab, Lahore. Professor Madni told the court that a person who left Islam for another faith was an ‘apostate’ and deserved a penalty for the act.

Professor Madni also recommended that no non-Muslims should be made Judges.

Qadianis, formally known as Ahmadis are followers of the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam which is considered heretic by mainstream Muslims. In 1974 the Pakistani constitution was amended to declare the followers of the minority faith “nonMuslims”. The Islamic Republic has continued to persecute the Ahmadis with laws and regulations which criminalize their religious practices.Earlier this week, the same court barred NADRA from making any changes in the religion column on national identity cards of the Muslim citizens. Ahmedis do not like to call themselves Qadianis, as they consider this word derogatory !

ISLAMABAD – It is common to see rats crawling on sleeping people, climbing out of toilets and attacking food items in houses in slums, but it turns out that the heavily guarded Parliament House is no different.It surfaced on Tuesday in a meeting of the Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research which was held at National Agriculture Research Centre (NARC) under Chairmanship of Malik Shakir Bashir Awan, MNA.NARC chairman in the meeting revealed that around 50,000 (fifty thousand) rodents are roaming in the Parliament.( IMO, keeping with the Paki tradition of hyperbole - one Paki soldier is equal to 10 Indian soldiers, blah, blah, blah - it does seem a bit exaggerated , but if it is indeed true, then it is beyond their technical capability to solve this problem. In 2016, special teams also waged a war on rats in the Parliament House, with one rodent caught alive from the Prime Minister’s chamber. One out of 50,000!

Media reports suggested that the special teams successfully caught 430 rats in seven months. The operation was launched in June 2016 by a private firm against a contract of Rs650,000 annually. The contract was awarded by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) responsible for the maintenance of the house.

During the first month of the operation, the teams caught 236 rats, and in July 42, 34 in August, 34 in September, 32 in October, 28 in November and till date in December 24 rats were caught. Are the pest operators on duty 24/7 even when the Assembly is in session

CPEC’s transparency: NHA admits irregularities in award of $2.9b contract to Chinese firm

ISLAMABAD: The National Highway Authority (NHA) chairman confessed on Tuesday that there were irregularities in the award of a $2.9-billion contract to a Chinese firm for construction of a motorway under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The admission raises transparency concerns in the multi-billion dollar deals.

NHA Chairman Jawwad Rafique Malik admitted that concessions worth roughly $200 million given to the China State Construction Engineering Company (CSCEC) were not part of the original bidding documents Pakistan had floated for the construction of the 392-kilometre long Multan-Sukkur section.

The chairman also confessed that the Rs294.4-billion or $2.9-billion contract had been awarded to the Chinese company on an “alternate bid”, which the company had submitted after quoting its original bid.

The chairman made these admissions before the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue that met on Tuesday under the chairmanship of PPP Senator Saleem Mandviwalla. These admissions carry huge implications for the multi-billion dollar CPEC projects and may land the government in trouble.

These confessions also revealed that controlled competition among three Chinese companies was not at all fair play, as the NHA engaged with the so-called lowest bidder in violation of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority Rules of 2004.

Several senators have moved a calling-attention notice in the Senate, asking for rationale behind the huge tax exemptions. The Senate standing committee would give a report to the upper house of parliament on its findings.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) had approved the Multan-Sukkur project at a cost of Rs259 billion but the lowest bid CSCEC gave amounted to Rs406 billion, said Malik. He further told the committee that CSCEC also submitted an “alternate bid” valued at Rs339 billion.

Upon this, Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak of the PTI questioned whether the PPRA Rules of 2004 allowed submission of alternate bids.

The chairman claimed that the rules allowed it but he could not cite the relevant PPRA Rule in his defence.

The NHA chairman further said that after negotiations the bidder agreed to lower the alternate bid price to Rs294 billion after the government assured that it would not charge taxes to the tune of Rs19.1 billion or roughly $200 million.

The senators inquired whether tax exemptions were part of the original bid documents and whether the other two Chinese bidders were aware of these exemptions. “Neither the other two bidders nor the lowest bidder knew about these tax exemptions,” confessed Malik.

But the NHA chief insisted that there was no loss to the state, as the government lowered the bid price to the extent of tax exemptions.

The admissions suggest that the deal was not awarded in a fair manner, said Senator Mohsin Aziz of the PTI.

Senator Nauman Wazir claimed that the NHA had initially received a Rs240-billion bid against the total project price of Rs259 billion. It later on asked the bidder to increase the price, which put the amount at Rs406 billion, said the senator. He added that both the bidder and the NHA then changed the project specifications to quote the Rs294 billion price.

But the NHA chief denied that the project scope was changed. Work on the project is expected to be completed in August 2019.

On the issue of tax exemption, Malik claimed that the policy allowed giving tax exemptions on imports. However, when the relevant policy and the rules were read it was disclosed that the exemption was only for temporary machinery imports while the government has given all types of exemptions to the company.

Although the chairman admitted giving exemptions worth Rs19.1 billion, the quantum of tax relief appeared higher. In its written response, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) informed the committee that in fact, three separate SROs have been issued. The tax authorities issued SRO 44, SRO 79 for income tax exemption, and SRO 51 for exemptions on construction materials and goods imported by the company for the project.

The company has been exempted from paying federal excise duty, sales tax and withholding tax on imported construction materials and goods used in the construction of CPEC’s Sukkur-Multan section.

The FBR said that it has the powers to give exemptions after the ECC decision with the approval of the Minister-in-Charge. However, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has already struck down these powers, terming them illegal and unconstitutional.

KARACHI: Minister of State for Finance Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan revealed on Tuesday government’s plans of borrowing from international markets in the next three months and providing relief to the salaried class in the forthcoming federal budget. He was addressing exporters of value-added apparel sector in a meeting held at the Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association (PHMA) House in Karachi, according to a press release.

Khan said the government is also contemplating an amnesty scheme for overseas Pakistanis to allow them to declare their assets, along with plans of clearing textile refunds and reducing the corporate tax rate.

“The country has to pay $3 billion before June against foreign debt for which fresh soft borrowings shall be made at the lowest possible rates,” Khan said.

“The government will announce an amnesty scheme for overseas Pakistanis by mid-March to compel them to declare their assets,” he added.

The government is also considering enhancing the tax slab for existing business and salaried class from the existing Rs400,000 to Rs800,000 per year and reducing corporate tax rate from 30% to 20% in order to enhance the tax base, he revealed. “The revenue shortfall shall be covered up by bringing new taxpayers into the tax net.”

He further said that revenue collection has remarkably increased by 20%, resulting in an enlarged development portfolio, with provinces receiving bigger shares. “We intend to leave behind a good foreign exchange reserves position so that the caretaker and the next federal government do not face problems in coming years. Economic indicators, including inflow of foreign direct investment, have also improved,” he said.

“The government is aware of the difficulties faced by exporters and is taking all possible steps to facilitate them,” the minister remarked.

“A major chunk of the approximately Rs160 billion refund claims of exporters shall be cleared, which would have a positive impact on exports,” Khan said. He was of the view that the government should meet sector-specific associations to learn about their problems and issues rather than relying on trade bodies which claim to represent the entire business community.

FO deplores India's ban on Pakistani artistes

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday deplored India over “pervading extremism and anti-Pakistan prejudice” in its country as the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (IMPPA) upheld its ban on Pakistani performing artistes being cast in the Indian media.

“It is unfortunate that art and cinema, which bring people together by acting as cultural bridges, are being held hostage to hate and xenophobia,” the ministry said.

“Unfortunately this decision, following several others, including non-issuance of visas to Pakistani pilgrims, refusal to allow participation of Sikhs and Katas Raj pilgrims, and cancellation of sports matches, underscores the growing intolerance and bias prevalent in India,” the ministry deplored.

These decisions taken and/or upheld by the Indian government “expose it of [becoming] a sham-ocracy”, the MoFA statenment said.

“Politicising religious and cultural activities is detrimental, most of all, to India itself,” the statement read.

In his weekly press briefing, the FO spokesperson confirmed the visit of Lisa Curtis, senior director for South and Central Asia at the National Security Council (NSC) of US.

As per the foreign office, the meeting took place in the context of Pakistan’s “regular and continuous engagement with the US”.

Curtis was in Islamabad this week and held meetings with Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, Interior Minister

About the tensions on the border with India, MoFA in its press statement said it had summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh to discuss “the unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Indian occupation forces along the Line of Control (LoC)” on February 23 and February 27.

As per the statement, the reported firing on the LoC resulted in the death of two civilians, including a 13-year-old boy, while three others were injured.

“Despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations,” the FO in its press statement said.

According to the foreign ministry, Indian forces have carried out more than 400 ceasefire violations along the LoC and the Working Boundary in 2018 alone. The firing resulted in the 86 civilian casualties, including 18 fatalities.

The FO further accused of India of continuing brutalities in the India-held Kashmir.

“The Indian occupation forces killed two Kashmiri youth, including a 26-year-old man who was detained in Tral and Hajin areas,” the statement said.

Th FO presser further quoted Amnesty International’s annual report of 2017-18, in which the global human rights watchdog “highlighted the impunity enjoyed by the Indian forces for human rights abuses in the Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir”.

“The report states that in April 2017, eight people were killed by the Indian forces following the protests during a by-election for an Indian Parliamentary seat,” it said.

The annual reports also mentions the arrest of Kashmiri photojournalist, Kamran Yousuf and a French filmmaker who was conducting a research for a documentary on the Kashmir conflict in the Indian occupied territory.

The miseries of the people in the Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir have increased every passing day,” MoFA said in the statement.

“We strongly condemn the inhumane and brutal treatment meted out to innocent and defenseless Kashmiris, both within the occupied land or [those] in detention,” the ministry stated, urging the international community to play its role in calling upon India and account the state “for its crimes against humanity” in the occupied territory.

On the other hand, ties between Pakistan and China continue to get stronger as MoFA held a photo exhibition on February 26 to commemorate the Chinese New Year, inaugurated by Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif and the Ambassador of People’s Republic of China H.E Yao Jing.

“The photo exhibition is a glimpse of the strong Pakistan-China partnership, which celebrates the rich cultural linkages and bonds between Pakistan and China,” the FO statement read.

Additionally on the diplomatic front, the MoFA statement mentioned Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s two-day visit to Turkmenistan and Afghanistan “to participate in the link-up ceremonies of the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India Pipeline (TAPI) project and other related events. Terroristan will MOST DEFINATELY have its Jehadi Terrorists sabotage this Natural Gas Pipeline to India. The Indian Government must get out of the TAPI Pipeline Project soonest!

The ceremonies were also attended by the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani.

In his statement at the inaugural ceremony in Turkmenistan, the Prime Minister reaffirmed TAPI’s significance as “not just a gas transit initiative connecting Central Asia with South Asia, but a multimodal project that would lead to greater regional and economic collaboration”. An Inter-Governmental Agreement on Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan electricity transmission line was also signed.

The PM also visited Herat, Afghanistan where he met President Ashraf Ghani and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to working for lasting peace and security in Afghanistan.

PM Abbasi also “stressed on the potential of Afghanistan in becoming a regional hub of energy connectivity”, MoFA stated.

More on developments in the energy sector, the Pakistani foreign minister visited Russia last week and held discussions with the top officials regarding the implementation of Inter-Governmental Agreements signed between Pakistan and Russia over the import of liquid natural gas (LNG) in October 2017 and North-South Gas Pipeline project in October 2015.

An unresolved enigma: why political philosopher Hasan Zafar Arif was buried in haste?

It was around 1pm on January 14 when TV channels started running the news that a body has been found from the Karachi’s Ibrahim Hyderi area. The deceased was identified as Hasan Zafar. It took people a lot of time to realize it was Professor Dr Hasan Zafar Arif who had died silently, in the backseat of his car in a Karachi’s far off coastal area.

People who had just woken up from their weekend long sleep would have thought how promptly they were told this news. But the professor had been dead since long when the news hit the channels. His body was discovered around 8pm. What happened to him in the time span between 8am to 1pm on the ill-fated Sunday seems to be a mystery that a few people might not allow you to delve into.

The longtime human rights defender who put the foundation of Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS), which challenged dictator Ziaul Haq’s martial law, came to the limelight two years ago – once again – after he joined Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). The political philosopher’s body was found during the wee hours on Sunday and finally at 8.15am, an area elder named Yunus informed Head Constable Safdar Niazi that a body is lying at a backseat of a vehicle facing the sea shore at Ilyas Goth.

At precisely 8.35am Zafar Arif’s car, along with his body, was taken to ‘somewhere’ for at least two hours. No crime scene formalities were observed as it emerged after the interviews with DSP, investigation officer, the mentioned head constable. In the case of BB, the evidence was "hosed down with water". In this case, evidence was probably wiped down !

At precisely 8.35am Zafar Arif’s car, along with his body, was taken to ‘somewhere’ for at least two hours. No crime scene formalities were observed as it emerged after the interviews with DSP, investigation officer, the mentioned head constable.

When asked who is the man leading the team and when the results will be out, Zaman replied: “I don’t exactly remember that because there were too many people. But we did collect evidence and the results will be out obviously after a few weeks.” He further said that Zafar Arif’s daughter and widow came to the police station the next day and said the professor died of natural reasons. “We know that it’s a natural death,” he said.

The time from 8.45am to 10.25am is a black hole. No one knows what happened to Zafar Arif’s car and his body during this span. Even if the concerned policemen were busy collecting evidence during this time, it was of no use. The car had been removed from the scene which was at the Rehri Goth area – all finger prints of alleged killers or abusers of Zafar Arif, if any, gone for good.

The body reached the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre at 11.30am where the officials checked it thoroughly ad later on announced there were visible marks of torture. Within an hour or two, the postmortem was carried out. “It was a heart attack.”Suffocation, tension amid burial rites The people close to Zafar Arif shared their experience how in sheer haste the philosopher’s body was ‘actually disposed of’ as soon as possible because there were ‘dangerous people’ roaming about nearby.“My uncle’s face was tilted towards right side in the coffin, against the religious norm. I objected but a relative intervened and said ‘bus bohat hugya’ (that’s enough now) and took the coffin with them for the graveyard,” one of Zafar Arif’s nieces said.

Many questions, evidence and memories have been buried with the political philosopher of this era that Karachi was blessed to have. But the city of bones, perhaps, didn’t deserve him thus he was executed silently. Looks like a targeted killing !

At least four security officials lost their lives and several others suffered injuries as a result of an explosion in the outskirts of Quetta, DawnNews reported.

The exact nature of the blast could not be ascertained as yet, however, a security official told DawnNews that "it seems to be a suicide attack".

There were also reports of firing in the area soon after the blast.

The incident comes hours after two police officials were martyred when assailants opened fire at the vehicle of Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Hameedullah Dasti on Quetta's Samungli Road.

Nikkah at Any Age Could Soon Become Legal in Pakistan

The ( powerful ! )Council of Islamic Ideology seems to be going in favor of the recently proposed ‘Child Marriage Restraint Bill’. The bill states that the citizens of the country are allowed to do Nikkah at any age but for ‘Rukhsati’ (moving to the husband’s house) the girl needs to be at least 18 years old. When it comes to Islam, the GOP takes its cues from CII !

The bill was passed by the Senate Standing Committee late last year to lower down the ratio of early marriages in the country. Senator Sehar Kamran moved the bill on the floor of the upper house of the Parliament, from where it was subsequently referred to the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) for further consideration.

CII was bound to give its final report on the matter within three weeks but that didn’t happen. After two months of delay, the council hasn’t yet given a conclusive decision regarding the bill due to its sensitive and complex nature.

Dr. Qibla in a recent interview said:

It is a very sensitive and complex issue, therefore the committee members are reviewing it from all aspects before coming up with a final verdict. Though currently, various recommendations on the child marriage age are under consideration, the CII is also stuck to its suggestion given earlier in which it suggested that nikkah shall be performed at any age but rukhsati shall only be legally allowed after 18 years of age. If this is going to be the case, Paki Ayeshas will have to say "goodbye" to education, socializing with male friends and colleagues. Wonder if there are any women in the powerful CII or is it strictly a male affair

Thousands ‘Disappear’ Amid Insurgency In Pakistan

An organization in Pakistan’s insurgency-wreaked regions says its preliminary lists have identified thousands of people who have disappeared over the past 15 years.

The Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) or Pashtun Protection Movement, is working with the families of those who have disappeared during more than 15 years of unrest in Pakistan’s northwestern Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, and parts of southwestern Balochistan Province. These regions are predominantly populated by ethnic Pashtuns, who comprise up to 20 percent of the country’s population. The Paki Army is basically waging a war against ordinary Pashtuns, in FATA under the "orders" of Massa in the guise of "fighting terrorism", while not targeting the Haqqani Terror Network !

Mohsin Dawar, a lawyer and senior figure in PTM, says more than 4,000 people remain unaccounted for on the lists.“These lists are still a work in progress, but the names various individuals in our movement have received now exceed 4,000,” he told RFE/RL’s Gandhara website on February 26. “We expect to have a final list once we build a central database.”

More than 60,000 civilians and soldiers died in the ensuing violence that began in 2003 in Waziristan and gradually engulfed all of FATA and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.While the Pakistani government agreed to immediately address the issue of landmines and promised justice for Mehsud, its response to other issues such as enforced disappearances was muted.

But lawmakers were not impressed. “Many of the so-called ‘recovered’ [people] were dead bodies. Did the commission initiate any investigation or prosecution against officials involved?” asked Senator Farhatullah Babar.

PTM leader Manzoor Ahmad Pashteen says they are determined to find all of those who have disappeared.“Thousands of Pashtuns are victims of enforced disappearance while thousands more have been killed unlawfully,” he said in a video posted on Facebook on February 26.

‘Deep state’ ensures Pakistan’s parties in disarray in election year

Pakistan's election year has begun, but the main political parties are in disarray. The 'Deep state' has ensured this would be the scene in the run up to the elections scheduled for later in the year.

The once great party, the PPP, has drifted into such irrelevance that political commentators in Pakistan barely mention it. What was once meant to be the King's Party - the PML (N) - when it was created by General Zia-ul-Haq, to oppose Benazir's PPP and led by his protege Nawaz Sharif, has been rendered leaderless by judicial activism. Judiciary in "pocket" of Deep State !

It seems the 'Deep State' has been acting with a two-word whip - Get Nawaz.The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), whose cricketer-turned-political leader Imran Khan has pretensions to political greatness, now appears to be more a pantomime and less a serious party.It would appear that for the present, unless something dramatic happens, the GHQ (General Headquarters at Rawalpindi) has it all tied up safely for itself for the next five years.The elections are still several weeks away, but a week is a long time in politics where strange things are known to happen. IMO, no doubt they will pull the strings - after a so called fair election. Their favourite candidate would still be Imran Khan !

No prime minister in Pakistan has served his or her full term; only one government, that of Asif Zardari, was able to complete its five-year tenure, but had to sacrifice its prime minster.The elections in 2008 had brought Asif Zardari's PPP (after the assassinated Benazir Bhutto bequeathed the party leadership to her husband in her will - strange but may be true) to power.The beleaguered dictator, General Pervez Musharraf, accused by Benazir of plotting her assassination, bolted from Pakistan. What the GHQ did not expect was the decrepit regime would last its full term of five years despite Memogate and other methods of skullduggery.It was a landmark for Pakistani democracy when Zardari's elected government transferred power to another political party in Pakistan after the elections in 2013. Things were expected to change said many starry-eyed intellectuals, some to be found in India. Others were more pragmatic and did not wear rose-tinted glasses. Nothing had changed and nothing would change, they (including this author) said.

Imran Khan, the Pathan from Mianwali, is the newest overgrown kid on the block. Idol of many, he missed the bus when he could not capitalise on the political adversity of his arch rival Nawaz Sharif. He was busy looking for a "new wife", therefore he missed the bus !

Yasser Latif Hamdani, a visiting fellow at Harvard Law School has an interesting story to tell. He describes Imran as a deeply religious and superstitious type even if his antics as a notorious playboy contradict this reality.
He also has spiritual advisers telling him what he should do to become prime minister. His party, the PTI, announced earlier this month that he had married Bushra Manika (aka PinkiPirni), mother of five, on February 18. (Actually, they got married a few months ago). It seems that the woman had a dream. A most holy personage in Islam told her that for Imran Khan to become prime minister, she must marry him, and then, both Pakistan and Islam would truly prosper.

She consulted her husband, who promptly agreed to a divorce and, in November, the couple divorced, described by her son as having occurred on the orders of Allah and His Messenger.Imran, eager to be prime minister swallowed this story. There is not much to commend Imran and this latest foray has not endeared him to many of his followers. Is this the Pirni's strategy of "back door" entry into Paki politicls on the coattails of Imran, who can be said to be "almost her father" , an age difference of about 25 years

The "burger" class among his followers is unhappy that he has married a woman who is dressed in "a shuttle cock burqa". This has also not pleased the hardened Deobandhis who constitute his most ardent followers, for, he has married a Sufi despite the fact that the bride wore a burqa. It seems that Imran is actually a closet fundamentalist and has begun to play the religious card assiduously. Being married can do wonders . There is scope for her conversion to Salafi-ism , after Imran "fulfills" her prediction of two brand new kids by him. He is already almost to 70, so the task should be classified as "urgent" . If any problems in this "department" , he should consult Larry King Ex CNN fame

He has wooed former senator Sami ul-Haq, leader of his faction of the Jamaatul-Islam (S) and chancellor of the Darul Uloom Haqqania, for an alliance to fight the Senate elections together. He has "sweetened" the deal by "allocating" taxpayer monies, out of KP Budget to Maulana Sandwich

Sami ul-Haq's CV is impressive. Known as the father of the Taliban, his madrassa has been the alma mater of the Taliban. Haq has been Chairman of the right wing Difa-e-Pakistan Council - an alliance of more than 40 political and religious parties opposed to US and India. In 2013, he formed the Mutahida Deeni Mahaz, an alliance of right-wing political and religious parties to contest elections.It is with this extreme right wing that Imran Khan has close relations and the PTI government in Khyber PakhtunKhwa announced an additional grant of Rs 227 million to the Haqqania madrassa. This is an addition to the Rs 300 million granted in the previous budget. The latest hand out has come just ahead of the Senate elections.

This kind of largesse to a madrassa globally acknowledged as the seminary of the Taliban comes at a time when the Pakistan government is battling the FATF resolution in Paris. This is not likely to embarrass the Pakistan government known for its double speak.The election turf is essentially between the PTI and PML (N); more specifically in the Punjab province and in terms of personalities, between Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif/Shahbaz Sharif.The Sharif family still has considerable control in the Punjab but the religious right and the Army will be the match referees. The other " famous" KP Maulana, ( Diesel ) is going to be left out in the cold

Does he have "clear title" on the plane

The question is how could civil aviation authorities whose control tower takes care of Pakistani air space, allowed it to take off, and on what grounds.Anything is possible in Pakistan

The principle poser here is can a chief executive fly an aircraft. He must have pilot license, but even then he needed permission from authorities, particularly from airport control tower to take off or even taxi to runway. If that permission was given has enquiry been ordered against CAA officials or PIA customer service and maintenance officials. Nothing official is being given by airline management or its pubic relations department about the sordid episode. Newspaper "thinking out loud "

Now the aircraft bearing Pakistani registration number is reportedly parked at one of the German airports. Its parking fee for such a long period has ballooned to beyond payment capacity of PIA which itself is suffering from lack of resources. The so-called demurrage charges

Government eyes $61 billion export revenue in next five years

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan eyes more than $60 billion in exports revenue in the next five years, betting on a double-digit growth in outbound shipments so far in the current fiscal year, but industry officials linked the target with ease of doing business.

Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday arranged consultative meeting with relevant stakeholders, including representatives from chamber and commerce in order to get their inputs for promoting foreign trade in years to come.

They discussed the three different scenarios under Pakistan’s strategic trade policy framework (STPF) for 2018-2023. Sounds like STFUP!

If the country achieves only 10 percent annual growth in exports the revenue could go up to $36.21 billion over the next five years. If exports grow 15 percent a year the foreign revenue could increase to $47.28 billion. But, with 20 percent annual growth, Pakistan’s exports could touch $61.03 billion over the next five years.

Exports started to pick up in the range of 10 to 11 percent in the first seven months of the current fiscal year. However, the overall performance of exports remained dismally low and stood at $20.4 billion in the last fiscal year of 2016/17. Exports had actually declined from $24 billion to $20.4 billion in the last four-year period.

The STPF for 2018-2023 is expected to be presented before the federal cabinet in May 2018 just ahead of the next general elections.

Any policy framework for promoting country’s trade without ownership of upcoming government will pose question mark that how effectively the policy framework will be implemented in the next five years. However, the policy makers said the trade issues need to be looked beyond political divide and the same policy might be fine-tuned after the next government comes to power.

Federal Secretary Commerce Younus Dagha told the participants of the consultative meeting about the preparation of STPF for 2018-2023. He said the new policy would provide more incentives to small and medium enterprises and women entrepreneurs.

The STPF for 2018-2023 will be comprised of eight basic fundamentals, including institutional strengthening, investment linkages, service strategy, product development and compliance, gender mainstreaming, market access and regional connectivity, trade facilitation and finally trade promotion and branding.

Vice President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Karim Aziz Malik said the electricity tariff in Pakistan is 22 percent high as compared to other regional states. Malik said government will have to reduce cost of doing business in Pakistan in order to maximise competitive edge. He also called for reduction in tax burden on export oriented sectors.

FPCCI Vice President said the trade deficit widened because of free trade agreements especially with China and Malaysia. He demanded of the government to provide the same incentives to Pakistani businessmen in upcoming special economic zones as being provided to China under China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Commerce ministry’s top officials, including Director General Trade Policy Nauman Aslam and senior official Mohammad Ashraf briefed the participants about the government measures after listening to their views.

The ministry has so far held nine consultative meetings at different places across the country in order to incorporate views of stakeholders for preparation of the new policy framework. The process kick-started in October 2017 and scrutiny of proposals will be done in the current month. The intra and inter-ministerial consultations will be done in March 2018 and the first draft of the upcoming policy will be ready by April 2018. The SPTF for 2018-2023 will be tabled before the cabinet for approval.

On the implementation of last SPTF from 2015-2018, the ministry officials told the meeting that restructuring of ministry of commerce, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company is underway, while placement of Intellectual Property Organisation under the commerce ministry has been implemented. Government is also strengthening skill development institutes and creating new export councils for rice and pharmaceutical products. But, there has been a medium progress on payment of stuck tax refunds.

Ministry officials said reasons for slow implementation of last SPTF were its nine-month delayed announcement, late publication of statutory regulatory orders/circulars and inherent flaws in business procedures.
